Important
Information
Financial Aid and Scholarships
Financial aid and scholarship opportunities
are limited and generally not available from
Australian sources. Students are advised to
explore what funding options (ie loans, grants,
subsidies, sponsorships, scholarships and other
awards or benefits) are available from sources
within their home country. JCU is familiar
with some financial aid and scholarships
that are available to students from specific
nationalities and criteria; these are listed below.
Loans and Grants
Students from the following countries may
be eligible to apply for loans, and in some
cases grants or other non-repayable types
of funding, from their government or a
financial institution.
• Canada
Canadian federal and provincial student
loans (i.e. Ontario Student Assistance
Program, etc)
• Germany
German study grant scheme (BAföG)
• India
Credila Indian Student loan program
• Netherlands
Studiefinanciering
• Scandinavia
(CSN, Statens Lånekasse, Statens
Uddannelsesstøtte)
Australian Development
Scholarships (ADS)
JCU has welcomed hundreds of AusAID
students from the developing world over
the years, funded by the Australian Agency
for International Development (AusAID).
For further information about the ADS and
AusAID schemes, including eligibility and
how to apply, please visit the AusAID website
or email AusAID@jcu.edu.au.
Other Scholarships and Grants
JCU offers a limited number of scholarships and
grants to international students, however these
are generally based on academic merit only.
Planning Your Budget
University study involves a range of expenses
including living and study costs. Some are fixed
and some will vary, depending on the type of
course you are studying, and your lifestyle.
Tuition Fees
Tuition fees vary between degrees and
increase each new calendar year. Fee
information for JCU degrees in Australia is
given on page 12 of this publication, and for
Singapore fees see page 8.
www.jcu.edu.au/international/fees
Other costs
In addition to annual tuition fees, international
students should be aware of the following costs:
• Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)
Students are required to organise private
health insurance before coming to study
in Australia and are expected to maintain
this insurance for the duration of their visa.
Norwegian, Swedish and Belgian citizens do
not require OSHC. OSHC is only available
to student visa holders. Students who arrive
in Australia without a student visa will not
have access to OSHC until their student visa
is granted. JCU organises OSHC membership
for students who will be applying for a
student visa. Fees vary depending on the
length of your student visa and are subject
to change. OSHC fees are approximately
A$259 for six months/A$519 for one year.
Fees are subject to change.
• Student Services and Amenities Fee
The Student Services and Amenities fee
provides students access to services that
enhance your student experience through
student life, student representation and
advocacy. The fee for 2013 is $273 and is
subject to change for 2014.
• Books and miscellaneous study expenses
Approximately A$400 is required per
teaching period/semester for books. Other
study costs, depending on the course, may
include: field trip costs, lab equipment,
stationery, subject handbooks and
calculator. It is also suggested that the costs
for a computer/laptop be factored into your
overall costs.
