The “Green IT Alliance” is a major outcome of the third national IT summit, held in November<br />
2008. This partnership of several government departments, research organisations <strong>and</strong><br />
the Federal Association for Information Technology, Telecommunications <strong>and</strong> New Media<br />
(BITKOM) was formed to develop an “IT Agenda for Climate <strong>and</strong> Environment”. The main<br />
goals of the initiative are: (1) to set the political <strong>and</strong> economic agenda on Green IT; (2) to<br />
make IT a leader in green technologies; <strong>and</strong> (3) to help boost exports <strong>and</strong> foster collaboration<br />
across societal sectors. As of 2012, 35 producers, consumer groups <strong>and</strong> research institutions<br />
are members of the alliance.<br />

The trade association BITKOM founded a temporary consultancy offi ce that mediated<br />
between pilot projects implementing green ICT solutions <strong>and</strong> public funding schemes offered<br />
by the Federal Ministry of the Environment, the Federal Environment Agency <strong>and</strong> the KfW,<br />
the development bank of Germany’s federal government <strong>and</strong> federal states. The ”Green IT<br />
Advisory Offi ce” was founded during the research program “IT goes green” set out in the<br />
Environmental Innovation Programme (UIP) in early 2009, <strong>and</strong> it supported professionals in<br />
the implementation of green IT projects. The funding of the offi ce was phased out in 2012.<br />

The IT Children’s Fund is a multi-stakeholder initiative that aims to provide free laptop<br />
computers for children in out-of-home care. Its mission is: (1) to raise funds for the purchase<br />
of ready-to-use computers from all donors who wish to support the vision; (2) to distribute<br />
computers to children <strong>and</strong> young persons based on a specifi c needs assessment; <strong>and</strong> (3) to<br />
help children <strong>and</strong> young people in out-of-home care acquire needed IT skills, enjoy digital<br />
learning opportunities <strong>and</strong> participate in online social communities. It involves the National<br />
<strong>Co</strong>uncil for Children <strong>and</strong> the Danish IT Industry Association.<br />

Plan Avanza<br />

Plan Avanza, approved by the <strong>Co</strong>uncil of Ministers in 2005, is a permanent programme<br />
that subsidises the provisions of advanced telecom services to areas or populations at<br />
risk of exclusion. It also aims to promote the deployment of very high-speed networks as<br />
an instrument for fostering socioeconomic development. Its goals are: (1) to increase the<br />
public’s use of advanced digital services; (2) to develop the technological capabilities of<br />
the ICT sector; (3) to strengthen the digital content sector; <strong>and</strong> (4) to develop green ICT.<br />
In 2010, the 2011–2015 ”Strategy for Plan Avanza 2” was developed. It includes projects<br />
already in progress <strong>and</strong> updates initial objectives to adapt them to the new challenges of a<br />
networked society.<br />
