El Paso County 4-H Newsletter Page 10 Dog News Dog Info for County Fair Don't forget in order to show at County Fair, you must have attended at least one dog show prior to County Fair. In addition, a copy of the score sheet from the show you attended is due to our extension office a week prior to the state of County Fair. Don't delay, get them in ASAP! If you have shown at multiple shows prior to fair, please send copies of ALL show score sheets! We will use your very best score and combine it with your county score to determine who qualifies for State Fair. We will use all of your score sheets to determine end of the year awards for Achievement Celebration. You may fax, email, mail, or drop off your score sheets at our office. Expect Changes at Fair This year Showmanship and Obedience will be earlier than usual. Check‐in will start at 9:00am and the show will begin at 10:00am on Sunday, July 22. We are trying to find ways to accommodate more dogs and room for spectators, which might mean fewer rings, so the show might run a little longer than usual. Rally and Agility will take place on Friday, July 27 in Owens Arena (Livestock Arena) just as it did last year. We hope this will provide ample room for participants and spectators. Come prepared to have a good time! Which E‐record Should You Be Using? Please remember, members must complete an E‐Record for every project they are enrolled in. For the Dog Project, members must use the 4‐H Pet Animal Project E‐Record found at http://www.colorado4h.org/project_resources/erecords/index.php. You may find it helpful to also review the accompanying score sheet as well so that you understand how you will be judged. Canine Good Citizen The Canine Good Citizen (CGC) dog project has been very busy this summer. Nine new dogs were certified as CGC dogs on 3 June. Since then we have visited an assisted living facility, The Bridge, on 23 June. We all met in a common room and were able to introduce ourselves, provide a demonstration, and meet with all the residents that came to see us. We had a great time, the residents were all glad to see us, enjoyed the demonstrations, got a laugh here and there, and in general were a joy to be with. We then went to the Union Printers Home. This was a very different visit, we were taken to three of the 4 floors and met with individual residents – it was a bit of whirlwind visit. There were 7 kids and 9 dogs and we had just a couple of minutes with each of the residents. The residents were appreciative and responded very well to the dogs and kids. I do believe it was a genuine highlight of their day and made us all aware of the value of our visits. We still have 2 visits to go: one with Brookdale Place (2 July) and another with Winslow Court (11 July). Both of these visits will be in a common room so we will be able to demonstrate some of the skills the kids and dogs have learned.
El Paso County 4-H Newsletter Page 11 Small Animal News Small Animal Advisory Committee Meeting Report At our last SAAC meeting, we made final decisions for the upcoming fair. We delegated who would run the front unloading gate from 8‐Noon, finalized our best in show and reserve in show plaques, and discussed passport day and barn tours. During our public comment time, we had a rabbit parent wanting to make a storage area in the rabbit barn that would hold 5 and 18 gallon tubs that would be rented out. Our committee voted to allow this shelving project to take place. Our next SAAC meeting will be on August 23 at 6:30pm at the TEC building. Samantha Taylor, Secretary Horse News El Paso County 4‐H Horse Judging Team Reserve State Champions The Horse Judging Team competed at State 4‐H Conference on June 20 th and earned Reserve State Champions!! Congratulations to the entire team of Zac Abushaban, Sarah Laden, Dillon Martin and Sarah Eustace! Sarah Eustace was 3 rd high individual overall and won a $500 Scholarship to CSU while Dillon Martin was 6 th high individual overall and was awarded a $250 Scholarship to CSU. Next CONTEST‐ AQHYA WORLD SHOW CONTEST August 6 th in Oklahoma City! Attention Horse owners Dr. DeAngelo of Calhan Veterinary Clinic would like to donate $10.00 for every horse float to El Paso County 4‐H Horse Advisory Committee. This program will run from now until September 30, 2012. You must mention that it is for 4‐H for the donation to be made! You may schedule your appointment by calling: 719‐347‐2702. Livestock News Free Lamb and Steer Showmanship Clinic July 7 th Leaders and Members, Please share this information with others in the Sheep projects and Beef Projects (Breeding and Market) We have lined up a Free Showmanship Clinic for July 7 th at the Fairgrounds in Calhan. Sheep will go from 9 a.m. until 10:30 and Beef will be from 10:30‐noon. This is a hands on clinic so you will need to bring an animal to practice with. Our clinician will be Kendal Sedman, She lives and has grown up on a ranch in Carpenter WY. She raises club lambs, show steers and breeding cattle with her family!! She has been showing since she was two years old, and has exhibited cattle, sheep and hogs at the local, county, state, and national levels! Being a part of the agriculture industry is a dream and a passion of hers, and she enjoys assisting others progressing in the agriculture industry. She was also a member of the NJC Livestock Judging Team. Please take advantage of this great opportunity for some pointers and assistance before county fair! Please let us know if you plan to participate in the clinic by noon on Friday July 6 th . You may RSVP by emailing me back or by calling 520‐7685.
