USDA Scrapie Regulations
The USDA’s Scrapie Eradication Program will be enforced at the 2012 El Paso County Fair. This regulation requires
sheep and goats to have Scrapie ID (flock ID) ear tags that list their flock of origin. Animals required to have Scrapie
tags are:
Sheep
All breeding sheep regardless of age
All wethers 18 months and older
All ewes shown as market lambs
Goats
All breeding goats regardless of age
All wethers 18 months and older
All does shown as market goats
Exception: Registered goats (meat and dairy) may use legible tattoos with Breed Registration Numbers (in place of
Scrapie tags). Registration papers must be provided for verification. Illegible tattoos must be replaced with a USDA
Scrapie ID tag.
A purchased animal should have the seller’s Scrapie tag. An animal you raised should have your Scrapie tag. Tags can
be requested by calling USDA at (866) 873‐2824.
Lost Ear Tags
Each year we have a number of animals across all species who lose their ear tags for various reasons (fall out,
rip out or must be cut out due to infection). As soon as you realize your project animal has lost its ear tag you
should notify your superintendent and or the extension office. They will then make arrangements to come out
and retag your animal. It is best if you are able to find your old tag and have it available for the superintendent.
Attention Swine Project Members
A 4-H swine project member recently asked about shaving hogs for fair, i.e. what judges like to see. Judges like to see a
little longer length of hair on hogs -- no less than 1/2 inch. You can shave them a little closer on the face and belly, if
you like, but use a guard that leaves 1/2 inch on the rest of the body but any and all shaving of hogs must be completed
prior to coming to county fair. Once at the fair no shaving or clipping of hogs is permitted
Livestock Achievement Award
LIVESTOCK PROJECT LEADERS and MEMBERS- Although there is NOT a clinic requirement we do
have a incentive program. Information on that is posted on the county 4-H web site under the Livestock
Program link and all educational clinics, jackpot/ prospect shows can count for that. Please be sure to track
that information so your members get credit for their accomplishments and participation. This form has
been up-dated to better reflect achievements and participation. If you printed one off earlier in the year to
start tracking, please print a new one off. It can be found at
