El Paso County 4-H Newsletter Page 4 Reminders All Animal & Shooting Sports Record Books Small Animal, Dog, Horse, Livestock and (NEW THIS YEAR) Shooting Sports Record books are due to the extension office graded from the club/project leaders on September 10th. Your clubs/project leaders will require you to hand the books into them at an earlier date so that they have time to grade them, before handing them in to the office. I would like clubs to hand their books in together so please do not bring your book into the extension office and drop it off. It will only be accepted from your club or project leader. Ungraded books will also not be accepted. Leaders please grade all books as having the feedback to your members assists in the learning process. Remember books must receive a score of at least 70% in order for the member to complete the project. If the book is unsatisfactory the club or project leader will hand it back to the member and ask them to make the needed corrections to bring the grade up. If that is not completed by the time the books are due to the extension office then the unsatisfactory grade will count and you will not complete the project. Regarding animal books, the policy has NOT changed and is the same as the last several years. ONLY put one project area per book (in other words you put both your market sheep in one book and put your breeding sheep in a separate book and put your market swine in a different book). Do not put everything in one book it causes difficulty when grading. They must be separated by project areas (i.e. breeding and market are different project areas as is species). Remember for some projects a supplement is required and is also available on the website. Also you may find it helpful to also download the e-record Users Guide for Livestock/Horse e –Records also available at the same site and location as the record books are. It will have helpful information you can use to assist you in filling the books out. Leaders when you get questions please refer to the Policies For Success Document on the website and review the Record Book Policy. Score sheets are posted on our county web site and can be used as a guide by the members to help complete the books. Remember all books MUST receive at least a 70% after being graded or the member will receive an incomplete for their project. I would suggest whoever grads the books collect them in mid August and grade them with enough time that they may be handed back to an individual who receives less than a 70% on them so that they have a chance to bring their score up before being handed into the Extension Office by the second Monday in September. Which e record should you be using???? • All Livestock (Alpaca/Llama, Beef, Dairy Cattle, Swine, Sheep, Goat, Rabbit, and Poultry) and Horse projects use the Livestock & Horse e‐Record (Juniors 8 ‐ 10, Intermediates 11 ‐ 13, Seniors 14 ‐ 18). • Dog and Cat use the Pet/Exotic Animal e‐Record. • All non‐animal projects use the Family and Consumer Science or General Project e‐Record. E‐Records can be found online at: http://www.colorado4h.org/project_resources/erecords/index.php E record supplements?? There are only a few project areas that use a supplement, in addition to the e‐Record. All breeding animals need to use the breeding supplement. All shooting sports projects need to use the specific discipline supplement and the inventory worksheet Dog projects need to use the supplement Family and Consumer Science/General Project e‐Records are posted with the supplement attached if necessary Many projects require a ―Specific Project Information Page to be completed. Make sure you refer to the Exhibit Requirements for each project you are taking to make sure you complete all the requirements.
El Paso County 4-H Newsletter Page 5 Reminders 2012 Colorado 4-H Truck Raffle Procedures Profitable and Easy Fundraiser! Tired of selling things people don’t want? Tired of tiny profits? Tired of complex fundraisers? How about selling something cheap that everyone wants with a fabulous return?!?! This year, CSU Extension 4-H in El Paso County will be participating in a state-wide truck raffle! Participants could also win hundreds of dollars in cash prizes! This year we want a winner in El Paso County… think of the AWESOME publicity! Also the county which sells the most tickets is awarded a prize each year at LDC. The Colorado State University Extension’s 4-H Members in El Paso County directly benefits from the Colorado 4-H Foundation by receiving $5000-$7500 annually. Here is what you need to know to get involved! Prices: $5 for a single ticket, or $20 for a “pack” of 5 tickets. Profit: Clubs/committees receive 20% of their sales! That means for every single ticket you sell, your club/committee gets $1.00! For every “5 pack” you sell, your club/committee gets $4.00! Prizes: 1. Grand prize: 2012 Ford F-150 XLT 4 x 4 Super Crew Pickup Truck 2. 2nd $950 Cash 3. 3rd $750 Cash 4. 4th $500 Cash 5. 5th $250 Cash Drawing: Held September 22, 2012 in Fort Collins, CO. Winners need not be present to win! County Fair Information 4-H’er Fair Passes Available All currently enrolled 4-H members will receive a free week long fair pass from their club leader. Most of them should have been handed out already. If you have not yet received yours, contact your club leader. Parents and volunteers must purchase passes through the County Fair Office 520-7880. Judge’s Assistants Needed for Exhibit Day Parents – can you volunteer to help us our on Exhibit Day at the County Fair? This event takes place on Friday, July 20. Adult Assistants (21 years of age and older) are needed to be spend the day with the judge getting them the correct projects, handling their score sheets, and supporting them to make sure they can focus on being a high quality judge. It is a really fun way to volunteer and learn more about 4-H. We will train you, no experience necessary! It will be a volunteer commitment from about 8:00am to 3:00pm. You and your family are invited to join us on Monday, July 23 at 6:30pm in the Whittemore Building at the El Paso County Fair for the 4-H Appreciation Dinner! Monday is 4-H and FFA day at the fair! Bring your families and come celebrate with your fellow 4-Hers— enjoy the fair, enjoy some good food, and show your 4-H pride!
