El Paso County 4-H Newsletter Page 2 Headlines Continued Waldo Canyon Fire Efforts Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to assist in various ways with this tragedy. If you would still like to offer assistance by volunteering services or supplies or housing for displaced animals please contact the Emergency Operations Center at 520-7883. Currently, horses are being staged at Norris Penrose Equestrian Center. However, due to the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo coming up they must be relocated by Friday July 6 th . I know they are looking for people to take in horses. My understanding is that the person housing the animals temporarily will NOT be responsible for feed. Please verify this and make arrangements with the animals owners on how feed and care will be provided. Other livestock species have only been minimally impacted. It has mostly been horses and small “pet” type animals. Over the past week every member of our staff has done shifts at the Emergency Operations Center at the Sheriff’s Department. We will be continuing to support the effort by staffing the Disaster Recovery Center which we will have a representative from our office there 7 days a week from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. until further notice. Please be patient with us as we will be delayed in responding to your calls and emails during this time. State 4-H Conference Highlights El Paso County had 17 youth and 3 adults represent us at the State 4-H Conference. The Conference is home to several State Contests. El Paso County was well represented and one of the few counties to be consistently recognized! Results were as follows: Sarah Laden Reserve State Champion in Horse Individual Demo Sarah Eustace Reserve State Champion in Horse Public Speaking Hippology Team 4 th Overall Livestock Judging Team 5 th Overall Horse Bowl Team Reserve State Champions Horse Judging Team Reserve State Champions Livestock Quiz Bowl Team Reserve State Champions Please congratulate our kids as everyone worked hard and had a lot of fun! (If I missed anyone else’s results please let me know and I will be sure they are properly recognized in the next issue however these were the only results that were turned into me following the Conference.—Jonathan Vrabec) Straw and Water Bottle Rocket Contests OPEN TO ALL 4-H’ERS – The Straw Rocket and Water Bottle Rocket Contests will be held on July 20 th (Exhibit Judging Day), in the afternoon, inside and outside of the Whittemore Building respectfully. IT’S FREE! Junior and Senior winners in both contests will be eligible to compete at the State Fair straw rocket and water bottle rocket contests. Premiums are given to the top three winners in both age groups for both contests. For specific requirements on these contests, go to http://elpasoco.colostate.edu/youth/default.htm, select “County Fair Information” and scroll down and select “2012 Tabletop Project Exhibit Requirements.” Registration will be held the morning of Exhibit Day in the Whittemore Building. Materials will be available for participants to make their own straw rockets in the Whittemore Building. Participants in the water bottle contest must bring their own water bottle(s) with them to the fair, but some building supplies will be available to turn their water bottles into rockets, or they may make their water bottle rockets at home (just be sure to follow the requirements specified in the rules). Participants in both contests may “practice” with their rockets in the morning. Again, both contests will be held in the afternoon, July 20 th at the Whittemore Building. El Paso County 4-H Newsletter Page 3 “What’s Your H?” The Colorado 4-H Program is developing a new marketing campaign called "What's Your H?" It will allow everyone who's interested to learn which of the 4 H's they most identify with. Are you a Head, Heart, Hands, or Health person? We’re asking for your help in voting on the logo!!! We need all votes to submitted by July 6. The link to place your vote is: http://www.colorado4h.org/poll.php We are also looking for short, written testimonials about which H you most identify with and why to use in our campaign. If you want to participate, please send your H testimonial to sflorez@co.arapahoe.co.us by Friday, July 6TH! Here is my H: While I have never been an athletic person or the type to mix up a green smoothie for breakfast, health is definitely my H! I truly believe that without your health, you have nothing. Besides, being healthy can be really fun and delicious! I stay active by mountain biking in the summer and skiing in the winter. I love agriculture and my favorite part of agriculture is tasting all of the wonderful things it produces! I especially love trying new fruits and vegetables, as well as new varieties of the things I already enjoy. In addition to being fun and delicious, focusing on my health allows my head, heart and hands to be more productive. ~Devin Engle, 4-H Program Assistant, El Paso County Reminders State Fair Contests Champions of county competitions (Performing Arts, Creative Cooks, Cake Decorating, Demonstrations, Shooting Sports, Dog Show, Rocket Fly Day and Fashion Revue) may enter the State Fair contests subject to the rules and regulations of these contests. Competition dates for these contests are posted on http://colorado4h.org. Do not send the entry forms directly to the State. Information with complete details will be sent throughout July to all of those who are eligible to compete. Entry forms should be completed and returned to the Extension Office in a timely manner. Entries for shooting sports and dog will be coordinated by the appropriate advisory committees based on the results of the county competition. State Wide 4-H Leaders Forum to be held in El Paso County The Fall State Wide Leader Forum and Training will be held at Skyview Middle School September 28 th and 29 th . Both Organizational and Project Leaders should mark their calendars and plan to attend this great educational opportunity. I would like to remind everyone that the 4-H dress code is in effect whenever at ANY 4-H function including club sponsored horse shows and livestock shows. Any activity that you attend as part of 4-H you should remember that you are representing your family, yourself and your county so dress appropriately as outlined in the dress code! This includes family members and friends who might also be attending the event! The Dress code is posted online so please review it. It is not just the club or the individuals who host the event job to in force the dress code but ALL 4-H leaders who are present.
