Dear Families…
It is hard to believe that our school year is almost over. It has been a whirlwind year full of learning,
growing and lots of fun!
Congratulations to our state PTA Reflections Award of Merit winners. Logan Littell (film/video) and Emily
Fichera (photography) were recently recognized at the April 27 th School Board meeting.
Teacher Appreciation Week is May 3-7 and May 4 is designated as National Teacher Day. Our Tomoka
teachers devote their time, energy and hearts to our students. Please take the time to thank your child’s
teacher. The Tomoka teachers are Volusia County’s finest.
National Nurse Appreciation Day is May 12. Stephanie Roddy, school nurse, is a knowledgeable and
caring member of the Tomoka team. Nurse Roddy, we appreciate you.
Planning for the 2010-2011 school year has begun. If you would like to provide input regarding next year’s
teacher, you are welcome to submit a letter to me. In the letter, please describe the learning environment
that is best for your child, as well as any other information that is relevant to your child’s educational needs
or learning style. Do not submit a specific teacher’s name. If there is information that is pertinent
regarding non-placement in a particular classroom or non-placement in a class with a particular student, let
me know that specific information. You may also include social, behavioral and/or community issues that
should be addressed. Please include your child’s name, the 2010-2011 grade level and your signature.
Letters will be accepted through May 28, 2010. Remember, classes must be balanced regarding
performance, race and gender.
W.L. Mullens, the founding principal of Tomoka Elementary, passed away in February. W.L. was an
exemplary educator, a visionary leader and a truly phenomenal gentleman. His dear family designated
Tomoka Elementary as the recipient of the remembrance donations. Because of this kind gesture, we were
able to purchase Elmo Document Cameras for our teachers. W.L.’s giving spirit and love of Tomoka lives
on.
Report Cards for students in grades K-5 will be mailed on June 18. The Parent Portal is open 24 hours a
day, seven days a week, and is always a great way to access your child’s report card and other school
information. Remember to “Get Connected with the Parent Portal”.
Many thanks to the Tomoka PTA under the leadership of Nicole Gillespie. The Fall Festival and Health
Fair were both tremendous successes. Membership is at an all time high and five state PTA awards were
received. Many special projects were funded including technology, PE needs, tutoring, club sponsorships,
student planners, postage for final report cards and a dining room aide. You and your parent organization
are phenomenal!
As our 2009-2010 school year comes to a close I want to thank the dynamic faculty and staff, the fabulous
students and you, the wonderful parents, for a successful school year. It has been a pleasure to work with
you and your child. On behalf of the Tomoka staff, thank you for another great year of support and success.
Have a delightful summer.
Best regards,
Julie Johnson
