Dear Families…
It is hard to believe that our school year is almost over. It has been a whirlwind year full of learning,
growing and lots of fun!
Congratulations to our state PTA Reflections Award of Merit winners. Logan Littell (film/video) and Emily
Fichera (photography) were recently recognized at the April 27 th School Board meeting.
Teacher Appreciation Week is May 3-7 and May 4 is designated as National Teacher Day. Our Tomoka
teachers devote their time, energy and hearts to our students. Please take the time to thank your child’s
teacher. The Tomoka teachers are Volusia County’s finest.
National Nurse Appreciation Day is May 12. Stephanie Roddy, school nurse, is a knowledgeable and
caring member of the Tomoka team. Nurse Roddy, we appreciate you.
Planning for the 2010-2011 school year has begun. If you would like to provide input regarding next year’s
teacher, you are welcome to submit a letter to me. In the letter, please describe the learning environment
that is best for your child, as well as any other information that is relevant to your child’s educational needs
or learning style. Do not submit a specific teacher’s name. If there is information that is pertinent
regarding non-placement in a particular classroom or non-placement in a class with a particular student, let
me know that specific information. You may also include social, behavioral and/or community issues that
should be addressed. Please include your child’s name, the 2010-2011 grade level and your signature.
Letters will be accepted through May 28, 2010. Remember, classes must be balanced regarding
performance, race and gender.
W.L. Mullens, the founding principal of Tomoka Elementary, passed away in February. W.L. was an
exemplary educator, a visionary leader and a truly phenomenal gentleman. His dear family designated
Tomoka Elementary as the recipient of the remembrance donations. Because of this kind gesture, we were
able to purchase Elmo Document Cameras for our teachers. W.L.’s giving spirit and love of Tomoka lives
on.
Report Cards for students in grades K-5 will be mailed on June 18. The Parent Portal is open 24 hours a
day, seven days a week, and is always a great way to access your child’s report card and other school
information. Remember to “Get Connected with the Parent Portal”.
Many thanks to the Tomoka PTA under the leadership of Nicole Gillespie. The Fall Festival and Health
Fair were both tremendous successes. Membership is at an all time high and five state PTA awards were
received. Many special projects were funded including technology, PE needs, tutoring, club sponsorships,
student planners, postage for final report cards and a dining room aide. You and your parent organization
are phenomenal!
As our 2009-2010 school year comes to a close I want to thank the dynamic faculty and staff, the fabulous
students and you, the wonderful parents, for a successful school year. It has been a pleasure to work with
you and your child. On behalf of the Tomoka staff, thank you for another great year of support and success.
Have a delightful summer.
Best regards,
Julie Johnson

Dear Parents, Volunteers, Teachers, Faculty, Staff, and Ms. Johnson,
It is so hard to believe that the school year is coming to an end. “Time flies when you are
having fun”, and it has been a fun and rewarding year. The children have gotten taller
and smarter and as we say goodbye to our wonderful 5th Graders, we are welcoming
new Kindergarteners for next year.
As each year comes to an end, it is bitter sweet. Our children are a year older, but they
are more mature. We have to say goodbye to the teachers that were responsible for
filling their minds and hearts with a desire to learn, but they have fond memories of a
wonderful school year. Our duties as volunteers come to an end, but there are always
opportunities and needs to be filled.
This year has been so rewarding for me as your PTA President. I was truly blessed with
an amazing group of people who served along with me as your PTA Board. They are to
be commended for all their hard work and dedication, because of them your PTA was
able to provide programs and funding that helped to enrich learning and provide
positive experiences for our children during their most informative years. It is also the
support of our parents, our volunteers, our teachers, the faculty and staff, and our
principal. All these things combined make for a wonderful school, which we can proud
of in our community.
As your soon to be Past President, I cannot express in words my appreciation for the
opportunity that you provided me with this year. It has been an honor serving as your
President with such a fine group of individuals that makes up our PTA Board. It has
been a fun, full year, and although I am sad that my term must come to an end; I leave
with so much more than when I began and for that I am truly thankful.
On behalf of the Tomoka PTA and myself, I would like to thank you for all your support
throughout the year. It is your commitment and dedication that enabled us to have
another successful school year!!! It is our hope that you will continue to support our
PTA, as we strive to advocate for the children and provide opportunities to enhance
their learning experience. May you enjoy the remainder of the year and have a safe and
wonderful summer.
Fondly,
Nicole Gillespie
PTA News
*Grandparents Day ~ April 9, Tomoka invited grandparents to come and visit
with their grandchildren. The PTA provided coffee and breakfast and thanks to
Tina Kuykendal our Hospitality Chair and our many volunteers it was a huge
success. The chorus provided entertainment for our guests and under Mrs. Ray’s
direction left quite an impression. The program was wonderful and very heartfelt
as well as the kind words from our Principal Ms. Johnson and a few of our
students. The grandparents then had the opportunity to visit their grandchild’s
classroom. This is a memorable event for both the students and their grandparents.
*Health Fair ~ “Be Brave and Be Healthy” was the theme this year and despite
the rain everyone had a great time. Sheri Bowling was the coordinator and did a
fabulous job lining up all of our participants. Thank you to Sheri for all her hard
work. Also, thank you to Adam Lindquist, who coordinated the “Healthy Lifestyle”
Media contest. Mayor Fred Costello was on hand to announce and congratulate our
winners at the event. Congratulations to the winners and thank you to all those
students who participated, as well as, our wonderful judges!!! It was a huge success
thanks to our hard working volunteers and the many participants who came out to
share information with our families and educate them on maintaining a healthy
lifestyle.
*Reflections ~Recently it was announced that two of our students’ Reflection
entries went on to win at State. We are so proud of Logan Littel and Emily Fichera.
This year’s them was “Beauty Is …”. Logan, who is a kindergartener, won for
primary film. Emily who is a fifth grader, won for primary photography.
Congratulations to the both of them. This is a wonderful program that the PTA
sponsors to encourage children and teach them an appreciation of art and
literature. Next year’s theme is “Together we can…”
*Yearbooks ~ The 2009-2010 Yearbooks are available for $10 each. Please fill
our form with cash or check and drop it into the Big Red Box by the office.

CLASSROOM NEWS
SENSATIONAL SECOND GRADERS…
It is hard to believe that Our Sensational Second Graders are ready for third grade! We
have learned so many exciting things this year. Learning about the Native Americans at the
Pioneer Art Settlement and visiting with the manatees at Blue Spring State Park were
among the highlights.
We will culminate the year with Field Day on May 14 th and Dinosaur Day on June 4 th . We will
need volunteers, so please mark your calendars.
Our last units in math are measurement and fractions. Science lessons will include the
dinosaur study and even a story in our reading book about how they travel. Florida will be
the final topic of study for Social Studies.
All of the second grade teachers request that our students practice reading a book, writing
complete paragraphs, and complete math word problems and computation problems during
the summer vacation. It would be a great idea to make a summer writing journal to share
with your third grade teacher. Create some math word problems about the exciting events
happening in your family, and best of all, read a book about something you don’t know
anything about!
We will miss our students, but know they all have bright futures ahead of them at Tomoka
Elementary or wherever their education takes them.
TERRIFIC THIRD GRADERS…
Third graders have experienced a busy, fun-filled month. First, we all enjoyed a trip to the
Peabody Center to see Charlotte’s Web. It was a standing room only show and the children
were excited to be in a theater setting. Students were able to compare and contrast the
different approaches to the story taken by the author in the original book, the two movies
and the play. Next we’re off to the Sanford Zoo on May 5 th . This is a wonderful
opportunity for the students to not only enjoy the beautiful zoo, but also do some hands on
learning about reptiles, mammals and amphibians. Our classes celebrated earth day in a
variety of ways and we hope those lessons carry over into daily life.
We ask that you help your child remember that school is not yet over, even though the year
is winding down. It’s important to stay focused and keep trying to do their best work.
There is a lot left to learn this year!

*ART SMART
Busy Artists…
Miss. Kinsler wanted to congratulate the following classes for
earning their 3-D marshmallow sculpture special project in her class
for good behavior and excellent creative skills in their projects:
Fitzgerald, Gill, Sherwin, Horn, Meredith, and Wyland.
* Crimestopper Poster Contest: The theme this year was very
positive: Make your World, Your School, a Better Place. Mrs. Sander
sent in 3 entries from our school. Tomoka 4 th grade students Shelby
Cox, Madison Reese and Nicole Sarro had their entries selected.
Several other wonderful entries are on display in the office.
*Twenty eight Tomoka students had their ARTwork
digitally submitted to the Florida Art Association K-12 Digital
Art Exhibition. This is the only state wide Art Exhibition held
to support the visual arts. Students will receive a certificate
stating their rating based on a 4-point rubric by the end of May.
* Ten of our students have their work on display in the
DeLand School Board facility through the month of May.
*Fifth grade is gearing up for graduation and will be tie
dyeing T-shirts in Art for their group party.
* Art in the Atrium- Sixty of our students in grade K-5 will
have their artwork on display in the Ormond Beach City Hall
Atrium in May. The opening for the show will be on Friday April
30 th from 4:30-5:30. This show is sponsored and hung by the
Ormond Memorial Art Museum and Gardens.
FOURTH ANNUAL BOOK SWAP
During the week of May 24 th , FFEA students and the Media Center
will host Tomoka’s Fourth Annual Book Swap. What a great
opportunity for our students to share in the joy of reading!
Here’s how it works:
We are asking our students to clean off their book shelf at home and
find a book that they are no longer reading. They can bring the book
to school on “Swap Day” and will have the opportunity to trade that
book for another book. (If you have several books that you would
like to donate for the swap, we will gladly accept them. Please, know
that the students will only be able to swap for one book). The Swap
will take place in the media center during scheduled special area.
Those classes that don’t have media for a special area will be
scheduled in during the day.
Any books remaining after the Swap will be donated to a local
organization.
Thanks so much for your continued support for children’s literacy!
Happy Reading!
NEWS FROM THE CLINIC
“May Is Hot Weather Safety Month”
A common problem that is seen during the warmer months is overexertion to outdoor activities. This can lead to
heat exhaustion and/or heat/sun stroke.
The following information from School Health Services can help you to be aware of the symptoms to recognize
and the actions to take in case of an emergency situation.
HEAT EXHAUSTION
Signs and Symptoms:
Normal body temperature, excessive sweating, pale and clammy skin, weakness, tiredness, headache, dizziness,
possible fainting, cramps, nausea and possible vomiting.
Action:
Get out of the heat and into a cooler spot; loosen clothing, lie down with feet raised 8-12 inches, cool water to
face and neck; cool drinking water if conscious and able to tolerate. Refusing water, vomiting and change in
consciousness indicate worsening condition: Recommend calling 911 immediately.
HEAT/SUN STROKE
A response to heat characterized by extremely high body temperature and sweat mechanism disturbances. This
condition is an immediate life threatening emergency.
Signs and Symptoms:
Hot, red, dry skin; no sweating, confusion, irritability, shallow breathing, seizures and possible
unconsciousness.
Action:
Call 911 immediately.
Take immediate action to cool the body down. Move to a shaded area and cool off with water and fanning. Do
not give anything by mouth. If able, apply ice packs to arm pit, groin, and neck area. Monitor for need to begin
CPR.
PLEASE have a safe and fun summer!
PE Sports Page
The PE department has been very busy this spring. Have you seen our spring cleaning and beautification of our
PE area? Students from the art club and Mrs. Sherwin’s class helped paint murals for our equipment shed.
On Earth Day, April 22 nd , we celebrated the earth by planting trees around our PE field. Coach Vollinger
headed up this program. Each 5 th grade class planted a tree with Coach Vollinger. A big thank you goes to Chase and
Abby Burnett’s dad for donating the trees to Tomoka Elementary.
Our Tomoka students have been representing us very well in area fitness festivals, track meets and community
5k races. It’s wonderful to see young athletes competing and enjoying being fit. Nikki Schedivy (a 2 nd grader in Ms.
Music’s class) won her age division in the Daytona Beach Easter Beach run. Dennis Filipovski won 1 st place in the
softball throw at the Hersey’s District Track and Field event. Steffan Mallory won 2 nd place in the softball throw.
Steffan also went on to win 1 st place in the 100 meters, 200 meters, and 4x100 relay. They both qualify to compete in
the State track meet this summer in Miami, FL.
The Tomoka Mile Event was an exciting event the whole school came out to watch. We had more students
qualify to be in the mile run this year than in the past 3 years. Our Tomoka students are getting stronger, faster and
tough competition for area schools.
Girls top three finishers were 1 st . Danielle Handel, 2 nd Jordan Diverniero, 3 rd Kiley Rogers
Boys top three finishers were 1 st Kyle Broll, 2 nd , Brody Loynd 3 rd Dennis Filipovski

Tomoka student athletes won big at the Volusia County Fitness Festival. Tomoka students won many ribbons
and were the team to beat at the event. The girls 4x100 relay had interference during one of the exchanges. But that did
not stop them, they pulled ahead and won over all the competition. The girls time was even faster than any of the boys
times. Way to go Moira Thorpe, A’Nisha Shavers, Calponia Martin, and Shaelynn Commette.
All the official results have not come in, but we hope to hand out all the ribbons in May and the 5 th graders will
receive their ribbons at the 5 th grade awards ceremony. Congratulations to all the students who qualified to be in the
County Fitness Festival. You all represented Tomoka well.
“BE BRAVE, BE HEALTHY” HEALTH FAIR A SUCCESS!
Despite sporadic rain drops nothing could hold back the local families for
coming out to the Tomoka Elementary PTA “Be Brave, Be Healthy” Health
Fair on April 13th. PTA President Nicole Gillespie and Principal Julie
Johnson were both thrilled by the number of families that attended. Event
organizer Sheri Bowling said “It is a good day when the school and
community can come together and help educate and encourage good health!
Hopefully it will become a Tomoka tradition that is carried on for many years!”
A wide variety of health and safety booths from many local firms were
present educating the community about various topics. Florida Hospital
Memorial Medical Center was there with their Wellness on Wheels bus
performing free blood pressure checks and body mass index screenings. Florida’s Blood
Centers’ Big Red Bus was also in attendance receiving 15 units of much needed donated
blood for the blood bank. Hawaiian Tropic was on hand giving away samples of sun screen
and educate about the dangers of skin cancer while Parks Dermatology performed free skin
cancer screenings.
The Ormond Beach Fire Department gave tours of a large fire hose truck. Simultaneously,
Volusia County Beach Patrol was out educating families about the dangers of rip currents and
how to swim out of one if you were caught. The Florida Licensing On Wheels (FLOW) Bus
was present issuing Florida Child Identification Cards to parents who brought in proper
identification. They also did driver’s license renewals on site for adults.
Dr. JoEllen Salce Rogers, Ph.D. led a great “Positive Parenting Workshop” with lots of
practical tips and methods.
Ormond Beach Mayor Fred Costello was on hand to present the ribbons to the winner from
each grade level (K-5) in the “What Health Means To Me” media contest.
An impromptu dance off competition occurred between the Chick-Fil-A Cow and Truman the
Dragon!
The kids did some spectacular rock wall climbing and bungee jumping complete with their free
temporary tattoos. Many kids participated in a soccer kicks competition sponsored by Ormond
Beach Soccer Club.
Parents had the pleasure of receiving much appreciated complimentary
massages from students at Daytona College and Okarski Chiropractics.
Barr & Associates Physical Therapy gave free posture assessments.
Larry’s Giant Subs, Papa Johns, and
Sonic provided food and refreshments
for the crowd.
Thank you to all of the wonderful
volunteers, staff, and faculty who helped
to make this event a success!

FROM THE DESK OF THE
BOOKKEEPER
It has come to my attention that some of our
local banks in the area have a problem when
checks are written in “red” ink. This makes
them difficult to scan with electronic
imaging. At this time I am requesting that
parents and staff use only blue or black ink
when writing checks made out to the school.
The Federal Reserve Clearing process
recommends only black or dark blue ink.
Thank you for your help with this matter.

Business Advertisers Needed
Dear Parents,
It is time to begin planning for our 2010-2011 Student/Parent Orientation Folders. These folders
include important information along with the school calendar and early release dates.
These folders are prepared at no cost to the school, by BG Enterprises, a well-respected company
that serves many schools in the Volusia County School District and has been servicing our school for
over 20 years. This company will solicit advertisements from our local community to cover the
printing costs. If you are involved in a business that would enjoy high advertisement visibility among
families with school age children, please let me know, so that I may give your name to Ms. Diane
Grathwohl, our ad representative.
I do not want to overlook anyone who is interested in being represented in the 2010-2011 Orientation
Folders, but ad space is limited, so please contact me soon. You may use the tear sheet on this
letter to indicate your interest.
Sincerely,
Sandy Russell
2010 Census – Everybody Counts!
With the 2010 Census underway, the Florida House of Representatives has launched
www.myfloridacensus.gov to make sure that every Floridian gets counted. Each Floridian not
counted means between $900 and $3,000 a year in missed federal funds. These lost funds will
have to be made-up by local taxes or less services.
MyFloridaCensus is a simple online tool that allows anyone in Florida to tell the state whether
or not they have been counted in the 2010 Census. With that information in hand, the Florida
House of Representatives is able to work with other census partners to help analyze (and
thereby minimize) which streets, neighborhoods and communities may go missed in the 2010
Census.
Here are the ways you can help:
1. Go to www.myfloridacensus.gov and put in your address, then click on the button to that shows
you have been counted by the census or not. This will put a point on the map to show where
people have and have not been reached by the census.
2. Post our www.myfloridacensus.gov link on your website or social network site.
3. Go to our MyFloridaCensus Facebook page and become a friend and then ask your friends to
join as well.
This communication and any files transmitted with it are confidential and intended solely for the
use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed. If you have received this email in
error, please notify Support Services at custserv@volusia.k12.fl.us.
Under Florida law, our e-mail addresses and communications are public records. If you do not
want your e-mail address and message content released in response to a public records
request, do not send electronic mail to this system. Instead, contact this office by phone or in
writing.
Thank You

Nutrition Note: Slow Down When You Eat
While eating on the run is common for many of us, eating slowly may be better for your health and your enjoyment of food. Food involves more of your senses than
just taste. If you eat quickly, you might short-change yourself on the full experience: the visual presentation of the food on your plate; the combination of smells and
the anticipation of goodness to come.
• Always eat from a plate.
• Sit at a table.
• Eat only when you’re hungry.
• Enjoy what you eat.
When you eat more slowly, you can better sense when you are full and stop before you overeat. Produced by ADA’s Public Relations Team
Flavored Milk: 1% Chocolate, .6%
Food manufacturers are adopting labeling and rating systems they say will make it easier to shop for foods that are good for you.
These labeling systems use stars, checks, lights or flags. Still, much of the most useful information for making healthy food choices is found on the food’s Nutrition
Facts Panel.
Look for nutrient-rich foods that provide variety and a large percentage of vitamins and minerals, especially compared to the calorie count.
Visit the Nutrition Facts Panel section for more information on reading food labels at your grocery store.
