Physical Education Major<br />
The department offers a baccalaureate degree in education with<br />
an all-level (elementary and secondary) major in physical<br />
education. Majors in this department must meet the requirements<br />
of the core, teacher education, and the physical education<br />
programs. Students who desire a major in this department<br />
encounter the various strategies of successful team coaching and<br />
various techniques of planning, teaching, and evaluating physical<br />
education programs, as well as gain a scientific background in the<br />
field. Students who desire certification in the state of <strong>Missouri</strong> as<br />
a teacher of physical education may choose to become qualified<br />
at either the elementary level (K-9) with an emphasis in motor<br />
skills, secondary level (9-12) with emphasis in sports skills or a<br />
combination of both (K-12). Required courses: See Physical<br />
Education Major.<br />
Social Studies Education Major<br />
The department offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Social<br />
Studies. The Social Studies curriculum is concerned with the<br />
study of man as a social being - historical, political, economic,<br />
social. The primary objective of the curriculum is socialmindedness<br />
where each area attempts to study contemporary<br />
issues and institutions from the viewpoint of advancing human<br />
welfare. Successful completion of the Social Studies education<br />
major will lead to certification to teach high school social studies.<br />

SECONDARY EDUCATION CERTIFICATIONS<br />
Students who wish to teach at the secondary level (grades 9-12)<br />
must complete a major in one of the fields listed below and ALSO<br />
complete course work necessary for the teacher education<br />
program at <strong>Missouri</strong> <strong>Valley</strong> <strong>College</strong>.<br />

Certification requirements include: ED 100, ED 191, ED 260,<br />
ED 300, ED 311, ED 322, ED 335, PY 270, ED 205/305/405, ED<br />
307, ED 352, ED 415, ED 491 and Techniques of Teaching in<br />
Major field (ED 441 through 449).<br />
Major assessment: Pass the PRAXIS II examination<br />
indicated by the <strong>Missouri</strong> DESE for specific certification area<br />
desired. Seniors must also submit a complete professional<br />
portfolio.<br />
Health Certification (K-12): BI 255, AD 100, EX 245, PY 245 or<br />
PY 345, PY 341, PE 322, EX 359, PE 340.<br />
ED 100. Introduction to Teaching - 3 hours. Examines the<br />
field of education including philosophical and historical<br />
foundations, teaching as a profession, and recent innovations and<br />
critical issues. Fall. Spring.<br />
"C" OR BETTER IN ED 100 IS A PREREQUISITE<br />
FOR ALL EDUCATION COURSES.<br />
ED 190. Elementary Practicum I - 1 hour. An observation in an<br />
elementary classroom. This is accomplished under the<br />
supervision of the college instructor. Class meets in seminars<br />
and requires 30 hours of classroom observation. Must be taken<br />
concurrently with ED 205. Prerequisites: "C" or better in ED<br />
100 and 2.0 G.P.A. Fall. Spring.<br />
ED 191. Secondary Practicum I - 1 hour. An observation in a<br />
secondary classroom. This is accomplished under the<br />
supervision of the <strong>College</strong> instructor. Class meets in weekly<br />
seminar and requires 30 hours of classroom observation. Must be<br />

ED 205. Beginning Portfolio Development – 1 hour. The preservice<br />
teacher’s portfolios is a developmental record. It will seek<br />
to capture the individual’s capabilities over time. The portfolio<br />
should reveal growth and performance in areas such as planning,<br />
instruction, teaching strategies, classroom management,<br />
community service, self-reflection, cross cultural experiences, and<br />
professional activities under a variety of conditions. Fall. Spring.<br />
ED 245. Art, Music, and Movement for Elementary Teacher -<br />
3 hours. Explores and analyzes theory and practical application<br />
for an elementary fine arts and physical activity program.<br />
Includes planning, recommended activities, teaching, evaluative<br />
techniques, and class organization. $15 fee. Prerequisite: ED<br />
100. Fall. Spring.<br />
ED 250. Geography for Teachers – 3 hours. Demonstrates<br />
how geographic education focuses on five central themes and<br />
how these themes recur and are amplified throughout the<br />
curriculum. It will also identify the knowledge, skills, and<br />
perspectives students should gain from a systematic study of<br />
geography. Fall. Spring.<br />
