WE GIVE THANKS FOR
UNKNOWN BLESSINGS
ALREADY ON THEIR WAY!
HAVE A WONDERFUL
THANKSGIVING.......
IT ALL BEGINS AT THE FAMILY TABLE
AID'S COMMUNITY DINNER:
For some that table is nowhere to be found. Family has turned them away for
being Gay, Transgender, or just different. Some are Homeless. Others have
HIV/AIDS. In 1986 a Community member and a San Diego activist, Scott
Carlson, and a friend, Dak Thomsen-Bousquet, and Drag Queen Medline
Keith hosted the very first Thanksgiving Dinner for those infected with HIV/
AIDS for their friends, caregivers, and supporters. This dinner was held
Thanksgiving Day 1986- 28 years ago, at the home of Dak Thomsen-Bouquet.
It was originally meant for those patients to have a good meal. This first
dinner hosted 180 guests and for 171 it was the last dinner together. Being
Alive then picked up the dinner founded by Scott Carlson in 1988. Five years
later after Carlson's death, the Imperial Court De San Diego took it over. We
all know it today as The Scott Carlson Thanksgiving Dinner. The Imperial
Court De San Diego assumed responsibility for the dinner and renamed the
event in his honor and in the spirit of the season.
This year will mark the 26th Annual Scott Carlson Thanksgiving Dinner. This
dinner has been home for so many who would not have a place to gather and
receive a free warm Thanksgiving dinner, a comfortable dry place to sit, and
a chance to share stories and good conversation with others who care. This
dinner is all prepared by court members and volunteers from the community
who give of their time to make this possible. All the food is donated by the
community the Imperial Court fundraisers which started in mid October and
November. Also the reigning Monarchs of the Imperial Court visit several
patients at UCSD Hospital with Thanksgiving dinners. These patients are all
smiles to see a home cooked meal brought to them and to be remembered
by someone. Carlson felt Thanksgiving would be a wonderful time to bring
people with HIV/AIDS and a community. As Empress 41, I was honored
to serve dinner in 2013 to many folks many I have never met or my never
see again this feeling was what Thanksgiving is all about just to show that
people do care and a community as a whole comes together people helping
people.......
You will not wan to miss this years annual Scott Carlson Thanksgiving Dinner
