AWWA Director’s Report

More than half the year has gone by and there are some changes pending for AWWA. I attended
the AWWA Winter Board of Directors Meeting in Austin where the Ad Hoc Committee on
Governance presented proposed changes. One of the major changes is the addition of a sixth
Vice-President to the organization. This will take effect next year.
And speaking of elections, Nilaksh Kothari, Wisconsin Section Director as well AWWA Vice-President,
was elected to serve as President for 2007-2008. Nilaksh will also be the visiting officer at our conference
in May so congratulate him on being elected president! There were five vice-presidents elected: Janice
Skadsen (re-elected), Glenda Dunn, Luis Aguiar, Joe Mantua and Craig Woolard. The last four are fellow
"classmates" of my director group so I was very pleased to see them all get elected. Trina Mastran was
elected as Director-At-Large. You can read more about all of them on the AWWA website at www.awwa.org.
Clifford Lum, Manager and Chief Engineer at the Honolulu Board of Water Supply, will be attending the
AWWA Fly-in with me in March where we will meet with our congressional delegates to urge them to
support water related issues.
I want to encourage anyone who wants to get involved with AWWA to volunteer to serve on either
section committees or association committees. You can find a list of association committees on the AWWA
website. I've been a member of the Diversity and Member Involvement Committee for the past two years
and have been privileged to work with some very dedicated individuals from other sections. Eddie Doi, our
membership chair, is on the AWWA Membership Committee. Royce Fukunaga is an active member of the
International Council, Elson Gushiken is a semi-permanent fixture on the Water Reuse committee, Paul
Kemp serves on various standards committees, and Donna Kiyosaki is on the Competitive Practices Committee
to just name a few of the local people involved on the Association level. If you're at least curious
about getting involved, please contact me and we can talk story!
