Special Recognition
Honoring Outstanding Achievements
This year the Hawaii Section's Fuller Awardee
for 2006, is Mr. Ivan K. Nakatsuka.
In 1976 Ivan earned a master's degree in Civil
Engineering from the University of Hawaii. He
earned his professional engineering registration from
the University of Hawaii in 1979 and has been a practicing
environmental engineer at Austin, Tustumi &
Associates in Honolulu ever since. As Chief Environmental
Engineer, he has completed many waterrelated
projects and has become knowledgeable in
the application of new technologies to solve today's
water and environmental problems. Currently, Ivan's
specialty is in the application of microfiltration membrane
technology to produce potable water.
Throughout his career, Ivan has been an active
member in professional organizations such as American
Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Water Environment
Federation (WEF) - Past President and Current
National Director of Hawaii Section, but he has
been especially involved with the American Water
Works Association (AWWA). In our organization,
he has served in nearly all leadership capacities to
include Section Chair, Conference Chair, Trustee, and
Education/Scholarship Chair. In recoginition of his
leadership skills, he received the AWWA Special Recognition
Award in 1990 and the AWWA Outstanding
Section Member Award in 1991.
Traditionally the Fuller Award results are kept
secret until the annual conference where the award
winner is announced. However this year, due to conference
timing and scheduling constraints, Mr.
Nakatsuka was informed he was the Fuller Award
receipient early, but will still be presented with his
award at the section's annual conference.
Look for his award acceptance photo in the next
edition of the Hawaii Section newsletter.
