El Refugio Nacional de Pesca y Vida Silvestre informa<br />
The <strong>Vieques</strong> National Wildlife Refuge informs<br />

Nuevas Oficinas:<br />
La nueva sede del Refugio Nacional de<br />
Pesca y Vida Silvestre de <strong>Vieques</strong> está actualmente<br />
en el proceso<br />
de construcción. Este<br />
edificio albergará las<br />
oficinas de la agencia,<br />
al igual que un centro<br />
de visitantes que<br />
contará con recursos<br />
interactivos y educativos.<br />
Se espera que estas<br />
nuevas facilidades<br />
estén terminadas y<br />
abiertas al público<br />
para principios del<br />
próximo año.<br />

Puente Laguna Kiani<br />
Para el disfrute de las personas que practican el<br />
deporte de la pesca de orilla, ahora lo podrán hacer<br />
desde el nuevo muellecito de pesca construido en<br />
el puente de la Laguna Kiani. Este muellecito fue<br />
creado para que las personas puedan practicar<br />
este deporte de forma segura y separada del área<br />
de tráfico vehicular. La agencia también tiene<br />
planes de añadir un segundo muellecito de pesca<br />
en el puente sobre la Laguna Arenas, que está<br />
camino a Punta Arenas.<br />

Paseo tablado de la Laguna Kiani<br />
Durante el mes de mayo se comenzarán los<br />
trabajos de reparación del paseo tablado localizado<br />
en la Laguna Kiani. Actualmente, el área<br />
está cerrada al público por motivos de seguridad.<br />
Planificamos reabrir la porción que se estará<br />
reparando del tablado para el mes de junio de<br />
este año. Dentro de los planes a largo plazo para<br />
este paseo, planificamos extender la plataforma<br />
del tablado para reconstruir las plataformas de<br />
observación y muellecitos de pesca que fueron<br />
destruidos por tormentas pasadas. Esperamos<br />
que el proyecto esté finalizado para el 2013.<br />

Puente Laguna La Chiva<br />
Otro de los proyectos que se están realizando<br />
en el Refugio es la construcción de un<br />
nuevo puente sobre la salida de Laguna la Chiva,<br />
sustituyendo al antiguo puente. Este puente<br />
fue dañado durante las últimas tormentas y<br />
presentaba riesgos de seguridad al público, por lo<br />
que se obtuvieron los fondos y se espera que el<br />
proyecto esté completado antes de finalizar este<br />
año. Este puente también contará con un pequeño<br />
muellecito para que las personas puedan pescar<br />
en la laguna. Una vez que este puente se abra al<br />
público, ya no habrá necesidad de continuar con el<br />
desvió actual para llegar a las playas de La Chiva,<br />
Escondida, Plata y Platita.<br />

Veredas<br />
Tenemos buenas noticias para las personas<br />
que practican actividades tales como caminatas<br />
y paseos en bicicleta. Próximamente estaremos<br />
abriendo al público la Vereda Cerro Playuela. La<br />
misma está localizada en el área de Playuela y<br />
Tres Palmitas. En esta vereda podrán observar y<br />
disfrutar de los pocos ejemplos de bosque seco<br />
en su estado natural que quedan en Puerto Rico,<br />
además de otros habitáculos<br />
como bosques de mangle,<br />
bosques costeros y la hermosa<br />
y pequeña playa Corcho. Esta<br />
vereda será conectada para<br />
finales de este verano con otra<br />
que se planifica para Playuela.<br />
Los planes para el próximo año<br />
incluyen el desarrollo de más<br />
veredas para bicicletas dentro<br />
del Refugio.<br />

Vivero<br />
Luego de varios años de planificación, estamos<br />
en las etapas finales de la<br />
creación del nuevo vivero<br />
en el Refugio. Este es el<br />
primero que será creado con<br />
el propósito de llevar a cabo<br />
proyectos de reforestación<br />
dentro y fuera del Refugio<br />
de Pesca y Vida Silvestre de<br />
<strong>Vieques</strong>. Este vivero será<br />
manejado en conjunto con la<br />
Reserva Natural del DRNA en<br />
<strong>Vieques</strong> y TICATOVE, Grupo<br />
de Conservación de <strong>Vieques</strong>.<br />
También se esperan llevar a<br />
cabo proyectos de conservación<br />
con grupos como 4H<br />
y Manta del Fideicomiso de<br />
Conservación e Historia de<br />
<strong>Vieques</strong>.<br />
> > New Headquarters<br />
The new headquarter for the <strong>Vieques</strong><br />
National Wildlife Refuge is currently in the process<br />
of construction. This building will house the offices<br />
of the agency, as well as a visitor center featuring<br />
interactive and educational resources. These new<br />
facilities will be completed and opened to the public<br />
by next year.<br />

Kiani Lagoon Bridge<br />
For people who enjoy the practice of sport fishing<br />
from the shore, they will be able to do so from<br />
the new small fishing pier built on the Kiani Lagoon<br />
bridge. This small pier was created so people can<br />
practice this sport safely and separate from the<br />
vehicle traffic area. The agency also plans to construct<br />
a second fishing pier on the Arenas Lagoon<br />
bridge, located on the way to Punta Arenas.<br />

Kiani Lagoon Boardwalk<br />
Repairs to the Kiani Lagoon Boardwalk will begin<br />
during the month of May. Currently, the area is<br />
closed to the public for safety reasons. The repaired<br />
area will be reopened to the public by June, 2012.<br />
Within the long-term plans for this area, we plan to<br />
extend the platform of the boardwalk to rebuild the<br />
fishing piers and observation platforms that were<br />
destroyed by past storms. We expect that the entire<br />
project will be finished by 2013.<br />

La Chiva Lagoon Bridge<br />
Another project being undertaken at the<br />
Refuge is the construction of a new bridge on La<br />
Chiva lagoon that will be replacing the old bridge.<br />
This bridge was damaged by recent storms and<br />
presented safety risks for the public, so funds<br />
were obtained for its construction; it is expected<br />
that this project will be completed before the end<br />
of this year. This bridge will also have a small pier<br />
so that people can fish from the lagoon. Once the<br />
bridge is open to the public, there will be no need<br />
to continue using the current detour to acces La<br />
Chiva, Escondida, La Plata and Platita beaches.<br />

Trails<br />
We have good news for those who practice<br />
activities such as hiking and biking. The new<br />
Cerro Playuela trail will soon be open to the<br />
public. This trail is located in the Playuela and<br />
Tres Palmitas area. In this trail you will be able<br />
to observe and enjoy examples of the few dry<br />
forests left in Puerto Rico in their natural state,<br />
as well as other habitats such as mangrove<br />
forests, coastal forests and the small and<br />
beautiful Corcho beach. This trail will be connected<br />
by the end of this summer with another<br />
one for Playuela. Plans for next year include the<br />
development of other bicycle trails within the<br />
Refuge.<br />

Greenhouse<br />
After several years of planning, we are in the<br />
final stages of developing the new greenhouse<br />
at the Refuge. This is the first one to be created<br />
with the purpose of carrying out reforestation<br />
projects inside and outside the <strong>Vieques</strong> National<br />
Wildlife Refuge. This greenhouse will be managed<br />
with the collaboration of the DNER Natural<br />
Reserve in <strong>Vieques</strong> and TICATOVE, Conservation<br />
Group of <strong>Vieques</strong>. We also expect to carry out<br />
conservation projects with groups such as 4H<br />
and MANTA from the VCHT.<br />

>> Este fue el tema presentado a Ernesto Peña por la Sra. Carmen Delerme, Directora<br />
de la Escuela, para plasmar un mural a la entrada de la Escuela Superior.<br />
Después de ver el deterioro del mosaico que estaba a la entrada, desagradable<br />
a la vista y un peligro para los estudiantes, Ernesto decidió tomar acción al<br />
respecto. Con la cita de Mandela en mente, presentó un boceto con su idea a los<br />
miembros del personal.<br />
Ernesto estaba donando su tiempo y talento, pero la escuela carecía de<br />
fondos para remover el viejo mural, empañetar y pintar para poder plasmar el<br />
nuevo mural. En colaboración con Greg White, Director General del W Retreat<br />
& Spa, Ernesto recibió un cheque para llevar a cabo el trabajo. <strong>Vieques</strong> Air Link<br />
donó $300 para el alquiler el andamio que se necesitaba para completar el<br />
mural 13’x13’.<br />
El mural representa la evolución de la tierra y el hombre, abarcando desde<br />
la Era Paleozoica, hasta el presente con imágenes que van desde el descubrimiento<br />
del fuego, herramientas, armas, escritura y proceso de impresión, que<br />
a su vez ha cambiado la educación y avanza hacia la tecnología y la conquista<br />
del espacio.<br />

school principal, to conceptualize a mural for the entrance of the High School. After<br />
seeing the crumbling ceramic tile mosaic that was previously at the entrance,<br />
become an eyesore and a danger to students, Ernesto decided to take action. With<br />
the quote in mind he presented a sketch of his idea to the staff members.<br />
Ernesto was donating his time and talent but the school was lacking in funds<br />
to remove the old mural, plaster and paint to prepare for the new concept. Collaborating<br />
with Greg White, the general manager of the W Retreat & Spa, Ernesto<br />
received a check to carry out the work. <strong>Vieques</strong><br />
Air Link donated $300 for the scaffolding to<br />
complete the 13x13 ft. mural.<br />
The mural depicts the evolution of the earth<br />
and man, spanning from the first Paleozoic<br />
Era, to today with supporting images of the<br />
discovery of fire, tools, weapons, writing, and<br />
the printing process, which, in turn, changed<br />
education and progressed toward technology<br />
and the conquering of space.<br />

10 Maneras de Convertir su Casa Verde<br />
1. Composta. Los desperdicios de comida y el patio pueden ser reusados en vez<br />
de ser colocados en una funda plástica y ser llevados al vertedero. Además,<br />
es más barato hacer su propia composta que ir a la tienda y comprarla. Recuerde<br />
también reciclar.<br />
2. Siembre un jardín de vegetales y hierbas. No solo es gratificante comer<br />

activity was held on May<br />
13, 2012, at the residence<br />
of Mrs. Ana Sonia Ventura,<br />
President and founder<br />
of the organization. This<br />
organization relays on public and private donations. We are all volunteers, and to continue doing<br />
our work, we need your monetary donations and time. Our organization was legally registered 4<br />
years ago, but has been working for 9 years in our community. Corefi encourages the municipal<br />
administration to support them, because in the past 4 years have not received any support from<br />
them. We are currently helping around 100 clients. It is a hard and strong battle because every day<br />
we have more people needing help. Without money to solve, it becomes more difficult to carry out<br />

La semana del 9-20 de julio<br />
será una memorable para<br />
los jóvenes de Alcanzando<br />
el Exito<br />
>> Tom Demenkoff, dramaturgo, actor y director<br />
de Nueva York vendrá a <strong>Vieques</strong> a donar su talento y<br />
tiempo para producir una obra de teatro. Los estudiantes<br />
participantes de este programa harán de todo,<br />
desde escribir el guión, preparar la escenografía,<br />
actuar, hacer el vestuario, hasta vender los boletos de<br />
entrada. De hecho, ellos harán<br />
lo que sea necesario para llevar<br />
a cabo una obra de teatro de<br />
verdad. La obra será presentada<br />
a los residentes de <strong>Vieques</strong> y<br />
visitantes la noche del jueves, 19<br />
de julio, en el Hotel W. Las taquillas<br />
estarán a la venta en la puerta,<br />
antes de la obra y su precio es de<br />
$15.00 para residentes y $25.00<br />
para visitantes. La presentación<br />
comenzará puntualmente a las<br />
6:00PM, y lo recaudado será a<br />
beneficio de Alcanzando el Éxito,<br />
organización sin fines de lucro que<br />
enriquece las vidas de los jóvenes<br />
de <strong>Vieques</strong>.<br />
Uno de los estudiantes<br />
que estará participando de<br />
gran manera es Nelson Timothy Santoni Nieves.<br />
Nelson tiene 16 años y cursa el 11mo grado en<br />
la Escuela Superior Germán Rieckehoff. A pesar<br />
de que dentro de sus pasiones se encuentran<br />
el canto, la actuación y la música, también ha<br />
escrito poesía, creado videos y se ha convertido<br />
en un líder innato dentro del grupo. Nelson dice:<br />
“Alcanzando el Éxito me ha dado la oportunidad<br />
de compartir mis talentos con la comunidad. Le<br />
estoy agradecido por haber ayudado a fortalecer<br />
mi autoestima.” Actualmente dirige, actúa<br />
y produce una película que ha escrito, la cual<br />
está pautada para ser presentada durante este<br />
verano. Entre las personas favoritas de Nelson<br />
se encuentran Cher, Cristina Aguilera, Will Smith<br />
y John Travolta, sin olvidar a su abuelo, abuela y<br />
madre, los cuales han influenciado grandemente<br />
en su persona. Sus planes incluyen estudiar<br />
arte teatral en Nueva York, luego de graduarse el<br />
próximo año y luego de ésto, ¿quién sabe?<br />
Otros estudiantes que merecen reconocimiento y<br />
felicitaciones son los 13 graduandos que participan en<br />
Alcanzando el Éxito y que comenzarán estudios universitarios<br />
durante este otoño en colegios y universidades<br />
en Puerto Rico. Para muchos de ellos, las becas que<br />
reciben de RFS son suficientes para convertir sus sueños<br />
en realidad. Los felicitamos a todos y les deseamos<br />
Éxito en sus proyectos futuros.<br />

at Reach for Success.<br />
>>Tom Demenkoff, a playwright, actor and director<br />
from New York will be coming to <strong>Vieques</strong> to donate<br />
his talent and time to produce a play. The students<br />
enrolled in this program will be doing everything from<br />
writing the script, gathering the props, acting, making<br />
the costumes and scenery to marketing the tickets.<br />
In fact, they will be doing whatever it takes to put on<br />
a real play! The play will be shown to <strong>Vieques</strong> residents<br />
and guests on Thursday<br />
night, July 19th, at the W Hotel.<br />
Tickets will be sold at the door<br />
prior to the performance on a<br />
first come first serve basis, and<br />
are $15.00 for residents and<br />
$25.00 for guests. The show will<br />
start promptly at 6:00PM, and<br />
the proceeds will go to Reach<br />
for Success, a non for profit<br />
organization which enriches the<br />
lives of the youth of <strong>Vieques</strong>.<br />
One of the students who<br />
will be participating in a big<br />

share my talents with the community. I thank them<br />
for building my self esteem.” He is currently directing,<br />
acting and producing a movie that he has written,<br />
which is scheduled to be shown this summer. Among<br />
Nelson’s favorite role models such as Cher, Christinia<br />
Aguilera, Will Smith and John Travolta, Nelson cites<br />
his grandfather, grandmother and mother as having<br />
influenced him the most. His plans include studying<br />
theatrical art in New York after graduation next year<br />
and after that, who knows?<br />
Other students who deserve kudos and congratulations<br />
are the 13 seniors who are graduates of Reach<br />
For Success and who will be going on to study this fall<br />
at schools throughout Puerto Rico. For many of them,<br />
the scholarships they receive from RFS are enough to<br />
make their dreams come true. We congratulate them<br />

antes de mudarnos comencé a escuchar un extraño llamado nocturno que nunca<br />
había escuchado. Ahora bien, cuando se trata de la naturaleza, me considero más<br />
bien un observador, pero no pude averiguar que animal tenía un chirrido parecido al<br />
de cuando se cierra rapidamente una puerta de tela metálica. A la misma vez, nos<br />
dimos cuenta de que no escuchábamos más a los coquíes u otras ranas nativas.<br />
Estaba desconcertado. Cuando un amigo de Santa Cruz se quejó de la invasión de<br />
ranas cubanas en su casa y la inmediata desaparición de lo que los cruzanos llaman<br />
“ranas de lluvia”, pensé que debía investigar nuestra situación. Justo el otro día<br />
puedo jurar que oí este chirrido en Villa Borinquen.<br />
Originalmente, nativas de Cuba, las Islas Caimán y las Bahamas, las ranas cubanas<br />
se convirtieron en especies introducidas en la Florida, y los registros se remontan al<br />
1920 en los Cayos de la Florida. Las primeras ranas cubanas probablemente llegaron<br />
como polizontes en cajas de embarque procedentes del Caribe. Para mediados de<br />
1970, se habían dispersado a través de gran parte del sur de la Florida. A partir del<br />
2010, aparentemente han establecido poblaciones reproductoras a través de todo<br />
el estado. Esta especie tiene el potencial de expandirse y solo está limitada por la<br />
temperatura. Se dispersan viajando gratis a través de los envases de las plantas<br />
de jardín, embarques, vehículos de motor y botes. El hecho de que pueden soportar<br />
el agua salobre no ayuda a la causa, y esta agresiva especie invasora se encuentra<br />

la superficie dorsal de sus piernas. Su coloración es muy variable, que va desde un<br />
color crema hasta amarillo, beige, verde, gris, marrón claro a obscuro o cualquier<br />
combinación de estos colores.<br />
Para complicar el asunto, estos anfibios producen una secreción pegajosa en la<br />
piel que es extremadamente irritante a las membranas mucosas de las personas:<br />
los ojos, boca y nariz. Las secreciones provocan una sensación de ardor y picor que<br />
puede durar por más de una hora. Aunque no es posible que una mascota muera por<br />
ingerir una rana cubana, hay informes de que le han ocasionado salivación excesiva<br />
e incluso convulsiones.<br />
El motivo que nos preocupa es el hecho de que estas ranas<br />
son consumidores voraces. De hecho, tratan de comer cualquier<br />
cosa que puedan poner en sus bocas, y en <strong>Vieques</strong> ésto incluye<br />
todo tipo de insectos, caracoles, arañas, escorpiones, lagartijos,<br />
aves y otras ranas, incluyendo a miembros de su propia especie.<br />
El impacto potencial para la población de coquíes de <strong>Vieques</strong>, sus parientes y los<br />
reptiles locales es catastrófico.<br />
Como todas las ranas, prefieren un ambiente húmedo y se pueden encontrar<br />
durante la noche cerca de cisternas, tiestos, arbustos de jardín o adheridas a las<br />
ventanas y paredes utilizando los pegajosos dedos de los pies, especialmente en la<br />
noche, cerca de áreas iluminadas esperando por los insectos atraídos por la luz. En<br />

¿Como controlamos a estas criaturas? Podemos comenzar manteniendo<br />
nuestra propiedad libre de aguas estancadas – donde la hembra deposita sus huevos.<br />
Lamentablemente, la completa erradicación es la única respuesta. La técnica<br />
más humana es aturdirlas utilizando una solución de agua y Anbesol (analgésico<br />
oral) – solo necesita unas cuantas gotas por cada 2 tazas de agua. Una pistola de<br />
agua es un modo efectivo de aplicar la solución. Sorprendentemente el analgésico<br />
las deja inconscientes. Luego, utilizando guantes o una funda plástica como guante,<br />
coloque la rana en una funda y guárdela en el congelador. También puede colocar<br />
alrededor del jardín una tubería PVC de 3 pulgadas, la cual atraerá a las ranas y la<br />
usarán como escondite, donde luego podrán ser capturadas.<br />

>> <strong>Vieques</strong> is under attack by yet another alien invader; and its name is Osteopilus<br />
septentrionalis, the Cuban tree frog. To begin my report, here is a personal anecdote:<br />
My partner Bill and I have sold our house in Pilón and are now living in Villa<br />
Borinquen. Several months before we moved I began to hear a strange nocturnal<br />
call I had never heard before. Now when it comes to nature, I consider myself rather<br />
observant, but I could not figure out what animal was making a cry that sounded<br />
like a rapidly sqeaking screen door. Simultaneously, I noticed that we were not hearing<br />
any more coquis or other native tree frogs. I was baffled. When a friend on St.<br />
Croix complained of an inundation of Cuban tree frogs at her home and the immediate<br />
dissapearance of what the Cruzans call “rain frogs”I thought I should investigate<br />
our situation. And just the other morning I could have sworn I heard that creaking<br />
call here in Villa Borinquen!<br />
Originally a native to Cuba, the Cayman Islands, and the Bahamas, the Cuban<br />
tree frog became an introduced species in Florida, and the earliest confirmed records<br />
date to the 1920s in the Florida Keys. The first Cuban tree frogs likely arrived<br />
as stowaways in shipping crates originating from the Caribbean. By the mid-1970s,<br />
they had dispersed throughout most of southern Florida. As of 2010, there appeared<br />
established breeding populations throughout the entire state. This species certainly<br />
has the potential to expand its range and is only limited by temperature. They<br />
spread by hitchhiking on containerized landscape plants, packaging, motorized<br />
vehicles and boats. The fact that they can withstand brackish water does not help<br />
the situation, and this aggressive alien species is now found throughout Puerto<br />
Rico, both the United States and British Virgin Islands, the Lesser Antilles as well as<br />
the Hawaiian island of Oahu.<br />
Cuban tree frogs are the largest species of tree frog in North America, and adult<br />
females may exceed 6-inches in length, but most of them range between 1- to<br />
4-inches. They usually have rough or warty skin, often with a pattern of large markings<br />
on their back, and frequently have stripes on the dorsal surface of their legs.<br />
Their coloration is quite variable; ranging from cream colored to yellow, beige, green,<br />
gray, light to dark brown or any combination of these colors.<br />
To complicate matters, these amphibians produce a sticky skin secretion that is<br />
extremely irritating to the mucous membranes of people: the eyes, mouth and nose.<br />
The secretions cause a burning and itching sensation that can last for more than an<br />
hour. Although a pet may not die from attempting to eat a Cuban tree frog, there are<br />
reports of excessive salivation and even seizures.<br />
The reason for concern is the fact that these frogs are voracious<br />
eaters. In fact they will try to eat anything they can get<br />
into their mouths, and on <strong>Vieques</strong> that includes insects of every<br />
kind, snails, spiders, scorpions, lizards, fledgling birds and other<br />
frogs, including members of their own species. The potential impact on<br />
<strong>Vieques</strong>’ population of coquis, their relatives and local reptiles is catastrophic.<br />
Like all frogs they prefer a moist environment and can be encountered nocturnally<br />
near cisterns, in potted plants, on garden shrubbery or attached to windows<br />
and walls using their sticky-padded toes, especially at night near illuminated areas<br />
waiting for insects attracted to the light. Indoors at night, they are frequently found<br />
in the toilet bowl, much to the horror of the discoverer! During daylight hours they<br />
sequester in all manner of nooks and crannies.<br />
How do we control these creatures? Keeping our property free of standing<br />
water – in which females deposit their strands of eggs – is a start. But sadly,<br />
complete eradication is the only answer. The most humane technique is to stun<br />
them using a solution of water and the oral anesthetic Anbesol – you only need a<br />
few drops for 2 cups of water. A water gun is an effective means of administration.<br />
Amazingly, the analgesic simply renders them unconcious. Then, wearing gloves<br />
or using a plastic bag as a glove, place the frog in a bag and put it into the freezer<br />
overnight. Additionall, lengths of 3-inch PVC tubing placed around the garden will<br />
attract the frogs as hiding places and they can be collected that way.<br />

Recently undergoing surgery, I have been lucky<br />
enough to realize what it is like to be truly<br />
loved and to be part of a community of<br />
truly loving and caring human beings. What<br />
started out to be a handful of friends that<br />

abuso de animales<br />
Qué hacer en caso de presenciar abuso de animales en <strong>Vieques</strong>:<br />
1. Llame al 911 para reportar el incidente a la Policía. Llamar al 911 es<br />
importante para establecer un récord del incidente.<br />
2. Cuando la operadora del 911 le comunique con la Policía de <strong>Vieques</strong>,<br />
pídale que se quede en línea, ya que puede ser que el oficial de<br />
<strong>Vieques</strong> no hable inglés.<br />
a. Pregunte el nombre y número de placa del Oficial de<br />
Policía de <strong>Vieques</strong> a quien reporta su querella.<br />
b. Ofrezca la información relacionada al incidente de<br />
abuso de animales.<br />
c. Pida a la Policía de <strong>Vieques</strong> que investigue (visite el<br />
lugar del incidente).<br />
3. Monitoree la situación de abuso.<br />
4. Si la Policía de <strong>Vieques</strong> no responde dentro de las siguientes horas,<br />
llame a la Sociedad Protectora de Animales y Rescate de Animales al<br />
787-741-0209 durante horas laborables y reporte la situación y la falta<br />
de respuesta de la Policía de <strong>Vieques</strong>.<br />
5. El Administrador de la Sociedad Protectora de Animales informará del<br />
incidente a las autoridades de mayor jerarquía en Puerto Rico.<br />

What to do if you witness an animal being abused on <strong>Vieques</strong>:<br />
1. Call 911 to report the incident to the Police.<br />
Calling 911 is important to establish a record of the incident.<br />
2. When the 911 operator connects you with the <strong>Vieques</strong> Police Department<br />
ask him or her to remain on the line because the <strong>Vieques</strong> Officer<br />
may not speak English.<br />
a. Request the name and badge number of the <strong>Vieques</strong><br />
Police Officer recording your complaint.<br />
b. Give the pertinent information regarding the animal<br />
abuse incident.<br />
c. Request that the <strong>Vieques</strong> Police investigate (visit the<br />
site of the incident).<br />
3. Monitor the abuse situation.<br />
4. If the <strong>Vieques</strong> Police Department does not respond within a few hours,<br />
then call the <strong>Vieques</strong> Humane Society and Animal Rescue at 787 741-<br />
0209 during working hours and report the situation and the lack of<br />
<strong>Vieques</strong> Police response.<br />
5. The <strong>Vieques</strong> Humane Society Shelter Manager will then bring the<br />
incident to the attention of higher authorities in Puerto Rico.<br />

The word endangered is applied to species<br />
and eco-systems in great peril or near<br />
extinction. Many of our natural resources,<br />
fauna and flora here in <strong>Vieques</strong> and<br />
in Puerto Rico have been paired<br />
with this adjective. The adjective<br />
provides a heighten awareness and<br />
in most cases such branding has<br />
brought together people willing<br />
to commit resources, do the work,<br />
volunteer hours, disseminate the<br />
necessary information to educate<br />
people in order to rescue what is<br />
endangered. One only wishes that<br />
a similar response (and resources)<br />
were immediately available to rescue sites of incalculable historical and<br />
cultural significance here in <strong>Vieques</strong>. These sites include the Playa Grande<br />
Central ruins, La Casa del Frances, and the site in Puerto Ferro determined<br />
to have been the sacred burial ground to a civilization dating back thousands<br />
of years. <strong>Vieques</strong> adds to this “wish list” our two lighthouses.<br />
Puerto Rico’s 16 surviving light stations include 11 historic lighthouses<br />
built by the Spanish government before the Spanish-American war. Some<br />
of these Spanish lighthouses are revered national monuments, but several<br />
others are in precarious shape and in some cases abandoned and in ruins.<br />
Interest in lighthouse preservation has increased greatly in recent years and<br />
major restoration projects have been carried out in Arecibo, Cabo Rojo,<br />
and Las Cabezas de San Juan in Fajardo. But much remains to be done as<br />
five Puerto Rican lighthouses (including the one in Puerto Ferro) remain<br />
on the Lighthouse Digest Doomsday List. With our May/June lighthouse<br />
cover story, we showcase these incandescent giants in an effort to heighten<br />
awareness about these historical buildings.<br />

La frase en peligro de extinción se aplica a las<br />
especies y ecosistemas que se encuentran en<br />
gran peligro o cerca de extinguirse. Muchos de<br />
nuestros recursos naturales, flora y fauna en <strong>Vieques</strong><br />
y en Puerto Rico han sido nombrados con este adjetivo.<br />
El adjetivo proporciona una mayor conciencia<br />
y en muchos de los casos esta etiqueta ha reunido a<br />
personas dispuestas a comprometer recursos, hacer el<br />
trabajo, servir como voluntarios, y difundir la información necesaria para<br />
educar a la gente, con el fin de rescatar lo que está en peligro de extinción.<br />
Uno solo desea que una respuesta parecida (y recursos) esté inmediatamente<br />
disponible para rescatar lugares de incalculable valor histórico y<br />
cultural aquí en <strong>Vieques</strong>. Estos lugares incluyen las ruinas de la Central<br />
Playa Grande, la Casa del Francés, y el área de Puerto Ferro que ha sido<br />
identificada como el cementerio sagrado de una civilización que se remonta<br />
a miles de años atrás. <strong>Vieques</strong> añade a la “lista de deseos” a sus dos faros.<br />
Las 16 estaciones de luz que han sobrevivido en Puerto Rico incluyen<br />
11 faros históricos construidos por el gobierno español antes de la guerra<br />
Española-Americana. Muchos de estos faros españoles se han convertido en<br />
monumentos nacionales, pero algunos otros están en condiciones precarias<br />
y en muchos casos abandonados y en ruinas. El interés en la conservación<br />
de faros ha incrementado considerablemente en los últimos años y grandes<br />
proyectos de restauración se han llevado a cabo en Arecibo, Cabo Rojo y<br />
las Cabezas de San Juan en Fajardo. Pero aún queda mucho por hacer en<br />
cinco faros de Puerto Rico (incluyendo el de Puerto Ferro) que permanecen<br />
el la lista del “Lighthouse Digest”. En este artículo que habla acerca de<br />
los faros, les mostramos a estos gigantes incandescentes en un esfuerzo por<br />
crear consciencia acerca de la importancia de estos edificios históricos.<br />

Punta Mulas<br />
Lighthouse (also known as <strong>Vieques</strong> Lighthouse)<br />
Location: North side of <strong>Vieques</strong>, in Morropouse. The lighthouse is<br />
located to the east of the port in Isabel II.<br />
Facts: Designed by Francisco de Albacete, the lighthouse’s construction<br />
began in 1893. It started operations in June 1, 1896. It was built by the<br />
Spanish government for the purpose of illuminating the <strong>Vieques</strong>/San Juan<br />
passage and to guide navigation in and out of what was a very busy and<br />
important port.<br />
Lighthouse specs: Stone foundation. Steel beams with brick and<br />
stone construction. The building measures 53 feet long by 35 feet wide.<br />
At the center of the structure, a 28 feet octagonal cylindrical<br />
brick tower rises from the 1-story brick building. An iron spiral<br />
stairway leads to the lantern, which is cylindrical in shape and<br />
made of forged iron, copper, and glass. The exterior gallery is<br />
made of brick and is surrounded by a forged iron balustrade.<br />
Its original sixth-order Fresnel lens projected a red light that<br />
pulsated every 4 seconds. A reflector imported from Paris,<br />
extended a beam farther than 8 miles. Punta Mulas Lighthouse<br />
was initially painted light gray with white details and baseboard.<br />
The tower was painted black. It closely resembles the lighthouse<br />
in the municipality of Arroyo as both share the patterns of circles<br />
and rectangles in the cornice. It is nearly identical to its sister<br />
lighthouse in Puerto Ferro.<br />
Historical Significance: Punta Mulas Lighthouse’s<br />
historical significance cannot be underestimated. The <strong>Vieques</strong><br />
passage is a complex stretch of sea with a chain of reefs known<br />
as the Caballo Blanco, sand bars, strong currents, low and high<br />
tides and constantly shifting winds. Once in operation, The<br />
Punta Mulas Lighthouse was relied upon by dozens of commercial and<br />
passenger vessels traveling to and from <strong>Vieques</strong> day and night. In the late<br />
1930’s <strong>Vieques</strong> had a population of nearly 30 thousands residents and was<br />
a key exporter of cattle, sugar cane and other crops. The port in Isabel II<br />
was one of the busiest in all of the Antilles. Boat crews relied exclusively on<br />
the stars, the moon, position of the sun during sunrise and sunset, land,<br />
wind direction and lighthouses for navigation. In its early life, the Punta<br />
Mulas Lighthouse was indispensable.<br />
Through the years: The interior of the lighthouse was renovated in<br />
1940. During the renovation, cement was used to fortify the structure, but<br />
the exterior appearance, the lantern and the brick roof remained original.<br />
The building was closed in 1949 due to advanced deterioration. The light<br />
became automated. From 1961 to 1981 it served as the residence to Mrs.<br />
Gilda Romero, who helped prevent further disrepair. The <strong>Vieques</strong> municipality<br />
acquired the structure and carefully restored it in 1992. The restored<br />
building included a museum featuring the maritime history of <strong>Vieques</strong> and<br />
the Americas as well as other historical exhibits. Unfortunately, the building<br />
has deteriorated rapidly and it’s currently closed to the public.<br />
Faro de<br />
Punta Mulas<br />
(también conocido como Faro de <strong>Vieques</strong>)<br />
Localización: Lado Norte de <strong>Vieques</strong>, en Bo. Morropouse. El faro está<br />
localizado al este del puerto en Isabel II.<br />
Hechos: Diseñado por Francisco de Albacete, la construcción del faro<br />
comenzó en 1893. Comenzó operaciones el 1 de junio de 1893. Fue construido<br />
por el gobierno español con el propósito de iluminar el pasaje de<br />
<strong>Vieques</strong>/San Juan y para guiar la navegación dentro y fuera de lo que fuera<br />
un ocupado e importante puerto.<br />
Especificaciones del faro: Cimientos de Piedra. Vigas de acero con<br />
ladrillo y construcción de piedra. El edificio mide 53 pies de largo por 35<br />
pies de ancho. En el centro de la estructura, una torre cilíndrica de ladrillos<br />
de 28 pies se eleva desde el primer piso. Una escalera de hierro en forma<br />
de caracol conduce a la linterna del faro, la cual es de forma cilíndrica y<br />
está hecha de hierro forjado, cobre y vidrio. La galería exterior está hecha<br />
de ladrillo y está rodeada por una balaustrada de hierro forjado. El original<br />
lente Fresnel de sexto orden proyectaba una luz roja que parpadeaba cada 4<br />
segundos. Un reflector importado de París emitía un haz de luz de más de<br />
8 millas. Originalmente, el Faro de Punta Mulas fue pintado de gris claro<br />
con detalles y zócalos en blanco. La torre fue pintada de negro. Se parece<br />
mucho al faro de Arroyo, ya que ambos comparten los patrones de los círculos<br />
y rectángulos en la cornisa. Es casi idéntico al Faro de Puerto Ferro.<br />
Significado Histórico: El significado<br />
histórico del Faro Punta Mulas no puede ser<br />
subestimado. El pasaje de <strong>Vieques</strong> es un tramo<br />
complejo de mar con una cadena de arrecifes<br />
conocidos como el Caballo Blanco, bancos de<br />
arena, fuertes corrientes, mareas altas y bajas y<br />
vientos que cambian constantemente. Una vez<br />
funcionando, el Faro de Punta Mulas sirvió de<br />
base para decenas de buques mercantiles y de<br />
pasajeros que viajaban hacia y desde <strong>Vieques</strong><br />
durante el día y la noche. A finales de 1930<br />
<strong>Vieques</strong> tenía una población de alrededor de<br />
30 mil habitantes y fue un lugar clave en la<br />
exportación de ganado, caña de azúcar y otros<br />
cultivos. El puerto de Isabel II era uno de los<br />
más ocupados en todas las Antillas. Las tripulaciones<br />
de los barcos se guiaban por las estrellas,<br />
la luna, la posición del sol durante el amanecer<br />
y el atardecer, la dirección del viento, la tierra y los faros para la navegación.<br />
En sus comienzos, el Faro Punta Mulas era indispensable.<br />
A través de los años: El interior del faro fue remodelado en 1940.<br />
Durante su remodelación, se utilizó cemento para fortificar la estructura,<br />
pero la apariencia exterior, el faro y el techo de ladrillo permanecieron<br />
originales. El edificio fue cerrado en 1949, debido a su avanzado deterioro.<br />
La luz se convirtió en artificial. Del 1961 al 1981 fue la residencia de la<br />
Sra. Gilda Romero, quien ayudó a prevenir su deterioro. El Municipio de<br />
<strong>Vieques</strong> adquirió la estructura y la restauró cuidadosamente en 1992. El<br />
restaurado edificio contaba con un museo con exhibiciones de la historia<br />
marítima de <strong>Vieques</strong> y las Américas, así como otras exhibiciones históricas.<br />
Desafortunadamente, el edificio se ha deteriorado rápidamente y actualmente<br />
está cerrado al público.<br />
Actualidad: La actual iluminación automatizada es producida por un<br />
faro alimentado con paneles solares. Los alrededores del faro parecen abrir<br />
al público durante los días de semana y el edificio cerca al faro es utilizado<br />
para eventos de la comunidad. El Faro de Punta Mulas está enlistado en el<br />

Today: The current automated light is produced by a beacon fed by solar<br />
panels. The grounds appear to be open during weekdays and the building<br />
next to the lighthouse is used for various community events. Punta Mulas<br />
Lighthouse is listed in the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.<br />
Puerto Ferro<br />
Lighthouse<br />
(also known as Faro Verdiales in honor of the family that took care of it.)<br />
Location: South side of <strong>Vieques</strong>, in Puerto Ferro. The lighthouse is<br />
located on the central south coast inside of the <strong>Vieques</strong> National Wildlife<br />
Refuge. The lighthouse is inside a former munitions area that was used by<br />
the US Navy. Due to this risk it is currently closed and off limits to the<br />
public. No vehicles, bicycles, or visitor on foot are permitted.<br />
Facts: Construction of the Puerto Ferro Lighthouse commenced<br />
in 1896 by the Spanish government using essentially the same plans<br />
as the Punta Mulas Lighthouse as designed by Francisco de Albacete.<br />
The lighthouses are identical except that the details and the baseboard<br />
were painted dark gray, and the lens was more powerful. The outbreak<br />
of the Spanish-American war interrupted the work. Just a few months<br />
after control of Puerto Rico passed to the United States, work resumed<br />
on the lighthouse with the U.S. government completing the remaining<br />
construction for $4,000. The lighthouse was activated for the first time<br />
in December of 1899.<br />
Lighthouse specs: Stone foundation. Steel beams<br />
with brick and stone construction. Similar to its sister<br />
lighthouse in Morropouse, the Puerto Ferro Lighthouse<br />
consists of an octagonal tower centered on the roof of a<br />
one-story building. The main entrance was located on<br />
the south side of the structure. The main door enters<br />
into a vestibule, which connects to the tower. To the<br />
north, there were two bedrooms. To the east, there was a<br />
living room, and to the west, an inspector’s room, office,<br />
storage/oil room, and a latrine. The kitchen was located<br />
opposite the vestibule on the north side of the building.<br />
A fifth-order Fresnel lens in the lantern room revolved<br />
by a clockwork mechanism attached to a 200-pound<br />
weight that was suspended in the stairway’s central column. The light’s<br />
early signature was a white flash every five seconds. Over the entrance<br />
facing the sea there is a base for a flag post, which does not figure in the<br />
original plans.<br />

Hechos: La construcción de este faro comenzó en 1896 por el gobierno<br />
español utilizando básicamente los mismos planos del faro de Punta Mulas,<br />
según el diseño de Francisco de Albacete. Los faros<br />
son idénticos, excepto que los detalles y zócalos<br />
fueron pintados en gris oscuro y el farol era de más<br />
alcance. La guerra Española-Americana interrumpió<br />
los trabajos. Apenas unos meses después<br />
de Estados Unidos haber adquirido control sobre<br />
Puerto Rico, se reanudaron los trabajos en el faro,<br />
finalizando la construcción el gobierno de EU por<br />

Who was Francisco de Albacete?<br />
The information available is not at all conclusive, but it’s entirely<br />
possible that the architect of our two lighthouses was a Spaniard<br />
by the name of Francisco Jareño y Alarcón (born in 1818) from<br />
the region of Albacete in the eastern part of Spain; therefore,<br />
Francisco de Albacete. He was a well respected architect who in<br />
1874 became the director of the school of architecture in Madrid.<br />
He is best known for his design of La Biblioteca Nacional<br />
de Espana (1865), a masterpiece of neo-classic architecture.<br />
Francisco Jareño y Alarcón was one of the first architects in the<br />
world to incorporate steel beams in his design and specifications<br />
for building materials and construction. His two well known<br />
signatures-- incorporating steel beams and his neo-classic style,<br />
point to him as the likely architect of our houses of light.]<br />

Historical Significance: From the moment of its activation in<br />
1899 until it closed in 1926, this lighthouse was considered one of<br />
the primary seacoast lights in all of the Caribbean. It was a key light<br />
in aiding navigation and passage between the Lesser Antilles and<br />
Cuba.<br />
Through the years: Built on top of a rocky promontory, the<br />
lighthouse was immediately undermined by the powerful forces<br />
of the sea which kept eroding the rugged cliff beneath it. The rain<br />
water cistern was constantly polluted by the powerful sea water spray.<br />
Within a few years of operation, the structure began to show structural<br />
damage. In 1920 $40,000 in emergency funds were requested<br />
by the Commerce Department to replace the lighthouse with a new<br />
one in Puerto Real. The Commerce Department wrote the following<br />
to congress: “It is urgent to rebuild a lighthouse at or near this point<br />
as this is an important aid to navigation… A light in this vicinity<br />
is necessary…” The request was denied. The lighthouse continued<br />
operating until March 9, 1926, at 4:30am, when a powerful earthquake<br />
caused irreparable damage to the structure. The building was<br />
then abandoned. An automated skeletal tower was erected next to<br />
the lighthouse. The tower supported a beacon that produced a white<br />
flash every four seconds, but due to corrosion and weather it eventually<br />
collapsed. There is no light or navigational aid on this point.<br />
Today: The lighthouse and the surrounding land are managed by<br />
the <strong>Vieques</strong> National Wildlife Refuge (VNWR). The Puerto Ferro<br />
Lighthouse is missing its lantern room. Some of the roof beams have<br />
fallen and most of the remaining ones are in poor condition. Neglect<br />
and vandalism have left this lighthouse in ruins. The Puerto Ferro<br />
Lighthouse has been added to the Lighthouse Digest Doomsday<br />
List. The VNWR is currently working with the US Coast Guard,<br />
the Puerto Rico Conservation Trust, the <strong>Vieques</strong> Conservation and<br />
Historical Trust and TICATOVE (<strong>Vieques</strong> Conservation Group) to<br />
examine the funding and feasibility of restoring the structural integrity<br />
of this light house. If this proves to be a viable option, the plan is<br />
to seek out funding, while the area is still being cleaned up by the US<br />
Navy and then allow for restoration work to begin. Although there is<br />
no current deadline, it is hoped that this will begin in 2013-2014.<br />
Both lighthouses are a great example of the official neo-classic<br />
minor lighthouse style. They are also the only Puerto Rican lighthouses<br />
built originally with two doors, of which the rear is flanked<br />
by two circular openings for air circulation. Since both lighthouses<br />
were constructed on high ground, their towers are short.<br />
These two giants of light are an integral part of our history. The<br />
Punta Mulas Lighthouse (automated light still works) is the ever<br />
fixture in and out of our port in Isabel II. And the Puerto Ferro<br />
Lighthouse is that majestic ghost on the south side that can’t be<br />
ignored. Both will continue to illuminate part of our history.<br />

habían dos cuartos. Al este, había una sala y en el oeste, la habitación del inspector,<br />
oficina, almacén/cuarto de aceite, y una letrina. La cocina estaba localizada al lado<br />
opuesto del vestíbulo en el lado norte del edificio. Un lente Fresnel de quinto orden<br />
giraba mediante un mecanismo de relojería unido a un peso de 200 libras, que fue<br />
colocado en la columna central de la escalera. La blanca luz emitía un destello cada<br />
5 segundos. Sobre la entrada que daba al mar, hay una base para el poste de una<br />
bandera, que no figura en los planos originales.<br />
Significado Histórico: desde el comienzo de sus operaciones en 1899 hasta su<br />
cierre en 1926, este faro fue considerado uno de las primeras luces costeras de todo<br />
el Caribe. Era una luz clave en la ayuda para la navegación y para el paso entre las<br />
Antillas Menores y Cuba.<br />
A través de los años: Construido en el tope de un promontorio rocoso, el faro<br />
sufrió las poderosas inclemencias de las fuerzas del mar, que continúan erosionando<br />
el acantilado donde se encuentra ubicado. La cisterna de agua de lluvia era constantemente<br />
contaminada por el gran alcance del salitre. Luego de varios años de<br />
operaciones, la estructura comenzó a presentar daño estructural. En 1920, fueron<br />
solicitados por el Departamento de Comercio $40,0000 de fondos de emergencia<br />
para remplazar el faro con uno nuevo en Puerto Real. El Departamento de<br />
Comercio escribió lo siguiente al Congreso: “Es urgente la reconstrucción del faro<br />
en o cerca de este punto, ya que es una importante ayuda para la navegación…la<br />
iluminación en el área es necesaria…” La solicitud fue denegada. El faro continuó<br />
operaciones hasta el 9 de marzo de 1926 a las 4:30 am, cuando un poderoso sismo<br />
ocasionó irreparables daños a la estructura. El edificio fue abandonado. Una torre<br />
automatizada fue colocada cerca del faro. La torre daba apoyo a un faro que producía<br />
un destello blanco cada cuatro segundos, pero debido a la corrosión y al paso<br />
del tiempo, finalmente colapsó. No hay luz o ayuda de navegación en este lugar.<br />
Actualidad: El faro y las áreas adyacentes al mismo son administradas por el<br />
Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre e <strong>Vieques</strong> (VNWR). El Faro de Puerto Ferro<br />
carece del área donde ubica el farol o linterna. Algunas de las vigas del techo se han<br />
caído y el resto están en malas condiciones. El abandono y vandalismo han dejado<br />
esta estructura en ruinas. El Faro de Puerto Ferro ha sido incluido en el listado de<br />
“Lighthouse Digest”. El VNWR trabaja en conjunto con la Guardia Costera de<br />
EU, el Fideicomiso de Conservación de PR, el VCHT y TICATOVE (Grupo de<br />
Conservación de <strong>Vieques</strong>) en la búsqueda de alternativas para el financiamiento y la<br />
posibilidad de la restauración estructural de este faro. Si ésto resulta ser una opción<br />
viable, el plan es conseguir los fondos, mientras el área continúe siendo limpiada<br />
por la Marina y luego permitir que comiencen los trabajos de restauración. Aunque<br />
actualmente no hay una fecha límite, se espera que este proceso pueda comenzar en<br />
el 2013-2014.<br />
Ambos faros son un gran ejemplo del estilo neo-clásico de faros. Son los únicos<br />
en Puerto Rico construidos originalmente con dos puertas, de las cuales la parte<br />
posterior estaba flanqueada por dos aberturas circulares para la circulación del<br />
aire. Debido a que ambos faros fueron construidos en terrenos altos, sus torres<br />
son cortas.<br />
Estos dos gigantes de luz forman una parte integral en nuestra historia. El Faro<br />
de Punta Mulas (luz automática continúa funcionando) es la estructura dentro y<br />
fuera de nuestro puerto en Isabel II. El Faro de Puerto Ferro es el majestuoso fantasma<br />
en el lado sur que no puede ser ignorado. Ambos continuarán iluminando<br />
parte de nuestra historia.<br />

¿Qué y quién es VAC?<br />
<strong>Vieques</strong> Contra el Crimen (VAC),<br />
Incorporado es una corporación privada<br />
sin fines de lucro dedicada a la protección<br />
de las victimas y la aplicación de la ley<br />
en la Isla de <strong>Vieques</strong>. La organización<br />
fue creada por dueños de negocios en<br />
<strong>Vieques</strong>, que dedican tiempo y recursos<br />
para mantener a <strong>Vieques</strong> seguro.<br />
¿Como están relacionados la<br />
policía y VAC?<br />
La relación de VAC y la policía recibió el<br />
apoyo del nuevo comandante de <strong>Vieques</strong>,<br />
el Sgto. Dennis Román, cuando asignó al<br />
Agente Andy Ramos como el primer “Agente<br />
de Enlace” en la comunidad de <strong>Vieques</strong>. La<br />
primera encomienda que el Sgto. Román<br />
dio al Agente Ramos fue la coordinación<br />
de un proceso viable con VAC, y a partir del<br />
1 de mayo el programa de protección a<br />
víctimas del crimen entró en vigor.<br />
Además del programa de protección<br />
a víctimas del crimen, la campaña “Los<br />
Procesamos” establece que emprenderá<br />
acciones legales contra las personas que<br />
cometan actos criminales, fue endosada<br />
y lanzada en una reunión que se llevó a<br />
cabo el pasado 19 de abril a la que asistieron<br />
altos oficiales de la Policía de PR y<br />
miembros de la comunidad.<br />
¿Cómo funciona el programa de<br />
protección a víctimas del crimen?<br />
El programa fue creado para hacer<br />
que el proceso de enjuiciamiento a las<br />
personas que cometen crímenes contra<br />
residentes y visitantes sea más fácil. Los<br />
servicios están disponibles tanto para<br />
personas que hablan inglés, como español<br />
y son víctimas del crimen. Cuando<br />
un incidente criminal ocurre, la policía<br />
puede decidir si contacta a uno de los voluntarios<br />
de VAC en el teléfono asignado.<br />
Un equipo de voluntarios entrenados de<br />
VAC (siempre un hombre y una mujer)<br />
responderán para ofrecer asistencia a<br />
los 30 minutos de haberse recibido la<br />
llamada. Los abogados que trabajan en<br />
calidad de voluntarios explicarán a la<br />
víctima el proceso, y si hay un arresto,<br />
harán los arreglos para que las víctimas<br />
y los testigos puedan viajar al tribunal de<br />
Fajardo de la manera más fácil posible.<br />
Cuando sea necesario, un voluntario se<br />
quedará con la víctima durante la noche<br />
y viajará a la corte con la víctima a la mañana<br />
siguiente. VAC ayudará a la víctima a<br />
través del proceso de enjuiciamiento con<br />
la menor frustración y gastos posibles.<br />
VAC también trabaja arduamente para<br />
cambiar los procedimientos que se llevan<br />
a cabo en el sistema judicial de Puerto<br />
Rico, que requiere que las víctimas y los<br />
testigos tengan que presentarse en innumerables<br />
ocasiones a la corte.<br />
¿En qué otros proyectos estamos<br />
trabajando?<br />
La primera semana de mayo, VAC estará<br />
obsequiando “Rosetta Stone” y otros<br />
programas de lenguaje a los oficiales de la<br />
Policía de PR en <strong>Vieques</strong>. Además, hemos<br />
trabajado con el Sgto. Román para equipar<br />
la estación de policía con un equipo básico<br />
de comunicaciones que facilite la comunicación<br />
con la comunidad.<br />
¿Que tipo de adiestramiento están<br />
haciendo juntos los grupos?<br />
En marzo, voluntarios de VAC y oficiales<br />
de la Policía de PR participaron de una<br />
sesión conjunta de adiestramiento con un<br />
sicólogo acerca de cómo reportarse a la escena<br />
inmediatamente ocurrido el incidente.<br />
Fue un éxito, pero demostró cuánto nos<br />
falta por aprender – incluyendo adiestramiento<br />
adicional para los oficiales y los<br />
ciudadanos voluntarios. VAC y la Policía de<br />
PR estarán co-auspiciando sesiones de<br />
adiestramiento adicionales una vez al mes.<br />
¿Qué es la policía comunitaria y<br />
que significa para <strong>Vieques</strong>?<br />
“La Policía Comunitaria” es un concepto<br />
mediante el cual los residentes del área<br />
bajo vigilancia unen esfuerzos con los<br />
oficiales de la policía local para correr la voz<br />
de que el crimen no será permitido en la<br />
comunidad. Mediante el trabajo en conjunto<br />
y la formación de una red, la policía y la<br />
comunidad tienen mayor acceso a la información<br />
del que tendrían por su cuenta.<br />

What and who is VAC?<br />
<strong>Vieques</strong> Against Crime (VAC), Incorporated<br />
is a privately-owned non-profit<br />
corporation dedicated to victim’s advocacy<br />
and bolstering law enforcement on <strong>Vieques</strong><br />
Island. The organization was launched by<br />
concerned business owners on <strong>Vieques</strong><br />
Island who are dedicating both time and<br />
resources to keep <strong>Vieques</strong> safe.<br />
How are the police and VAC<br />
partnered?<br />
VAC’s relationship with the police<br />
received the biggest possible boost from<br />
the new <strong>Vieques</strong> commander, Sgt. Dennis<br />
Roman, when he appointed Agent Andy<br />
Ramos as the first “Agent Liaison” to the<br />
community on <strong>Vieques</strong> Island. Coordinating<br />
a workable process with VAC was the<br />
first assignment Sgt. Roman handed to<br />
Agent Ramos, and as of May 1st the on-call<br />
victim’s advocate program went into effect.<br />
In addition to the victim’s advocacy<br />
program , the “Los Procesamos” campaign<br />
that announces that crime victims will<br />
prosecute was endorsed and launched with<br />
PRPD senior officials at a community meeting<br />
on April 19th.<br />
How does the victim’s<br />
advocacy program work?<br />
The program was created to make<br />
the prosecution process easier for<br />
victims of crime, both residents and<br />
tourists. Its services are available to<br />
both English and Spanish-speaking victims<br />
of crime. When a criminal incident<br />
occurs, the police have the discretion to<br />
contact a VAC volunteer via the on-call<br />
phone. A trained VAC volunteer team<br />
(always both a man and a woman) will<br />
respond to the crime scene to offer assistance<br />
within 30 minutes of the call.<br />
The volunteer advocates will explain<br />
the process to the victim and, if there<br />
is an arrest, make arrangements for<br />
the victims and witnesses to travel to<br />
Fajardo and the court in the easiest way<br />
possible. When necessary, a volunteer<br />
will stay with the victim through the<br />
night and travel to court with the victim<br />
the next morning. VAC will assist the<br />
victim in getting through the prosecution<br />
process with as little frustration<br />
and expense as possible.<br />
VAC is also working hard to change<br />
the procedures in the Puerto Rico court<br />
system that require a large number of<br />
court appearances to for victims and<br />
witnesses.<br />
What other kinds of projects<br />
are we working on?<br />
The first week of May VAC began<br />
gifting Rosetta Stone and other language<br />
software to the <strong>Vieques</strong> PRPD<br />
officers. We’ve also worked with Sgt.<br />
Roman to equip the station with a few<br />
communication basics that are making<br />
it easier for them to communicate with<br />
the community.<br />
What kind of training are the<br />
groups doing together?<br />
In March, VAC volunteers and PRPD<br />
officers and officials participated in a<br />
joint training session with a psychologist<br />
about responding to the scene<br />
immediately following an incident. It<br />
was successful but demonstrated how<br />
much more the group has to learn – including<br />
additional training for both law<br />
enforcement and citizen volunteers.<br />
VAC and PRPD will be co-sponsoring<br />
additional training sessions on a<br />
monthly basis.<br />
What is community policing<br />
and what does it mean for<br />
<strong>Vieques</strong>?<br />
“Community Policing” is a concept<br />
whereby the residents of the area being<br />
policed join forces with the local law enforcement<br />
to spread the word that crime<br />
will not be tolerated in the community.<br />
By working together and forming a<br />
network, police and the community<br />
have far more access to information<br />
than they would on their own.<br />

A Mini-Series: Medicinal Plants of <strong>Vieques</strong><br />
*It should be noted that the plants in this series<br />
are utilized by curanderos/curanderas (traditional<br />
herbal homeopaths), local midwives and<br />
spiritual healers and may not be recommended<br />

>> A common roadside weed on<br />
<strong>Vieques</strong>, garlic weed, called anamú in<br />
Spanish, is a veritable pharmacological<br />
powerhouse free for the harvesting. A<br />
native of the tropical Americas and the<br />
Caribbean, it is known botanically as<br />
Petiveria alliacea. It grows up to 3-feet<br />
tall and bears opposite, dark-green leaves<br />
and thin, terminal spikes of tiny white<br />
flowers. Its species name refers to the<br />
garlic-like odor the foliage and roots emit<br />
when crushed, hence the English common<br />
name.<br />
On <strong>Vieques</strong>, steam-heated leaves<br />
are employed as a hot compress to heal<br />
stubborn absesses. Women use a tea<br />
as an emmenagogue to facilitate a late<br />
menses. It is also employed as an abortificient<br />
and is not to be experimented<br />
with lacking supervision of a homeopathic<br />
healer. It is used, along with<br />
other herbs to make a bath for feverish<br />
children. Anamú tea is also drunk to<br />
alleviate of various types of pain.<br />
Laboratory research reveals that garlic<br />
weed contains a broad range of antileukemic,<br />
anti-tumorous, and anti-cancerous<br />
elements as well as compounds<br />
that destroy numerous types of bacteria,<br />
viruses and fungi. It has also been clinically<br />
documented to have hypoglycemic<br />
properties: decreasing blood sugar levels<br />
more than 60% one hour after being<br />
consumed. In Cuba, it has been used for<br />
years as a herbal aid for diabetes. And<br />
indeed, you can find anamú capsules for<br />
sale at Morales in Monte Santo!<br />
Avoid harvesting garlic weed from the<br />
roadside because plants absorb the toxic<br />

Conquistadora by Esmeralda Santiago: Indispensable Summer Reading<br />
imprescindible Lectura para el Verano<br />
>> En 1993, el primer libro de Esmeralda Santiago,<br />
Cuando era Puertorriqueña – un libro de memorias<br />
basado en historias de la infancia de su carácter personal,<br />
se convirtió en el “mejor vendido” internacionalmente,<br />
convirtiendo a la Sra. Santiago en el centro de atención<br />
del mundo literario. Fue aclamada como “una nueva voz,<br />
llena de pasión y autoridad,” por el Mundo del Libro<br />
del Washington Post. Se segundo libro y primera novel,<br />
el Sueño de América, publicado en 1996 y traducido a 6<br />
idiomas, demostraba la prosa lírica de la Sra. Santiago y<br />
sus extraordinarios dones como narradora. América, la<br />
protagonista, fue una viequense que vivía en La Esperanza<br />
y trabajaba en La Casa del Francés. En un viaje quijotesco<br />
de auto-descubrimiento y armada con nada más que la<br />
autodeterminación, América rompe un patrón generacional<br />
de abusos y huye de la isla en busca de una mejor vida.<br />
A pesar de que la historia tiene cierto parecido a la obra<br />
maestra de René Márquez, La Carreta, la novela constaba<br />
con un inmenso sentido de lugar y circunstancias. (Esmeralda<br />
Santiago pasó tiempo en <strong>Vieques</strong> investigando y<br />
escribiendo el primer borrador). Desde 1996, ha escrito<br />
dos memorias adicionales: Almost a Woman (1999) y<br />
The Turkish Lover (2004). Para aquellos que han<br />
admirado su trabajo, la espera de su<br />
segunda novela finalmente ha culminado.<br />
Conquistadora, publicada el año<br />
pasado por Knopf, se ha convertido<br />
en una de las novelas con las mejores<br />
críticas del año. La novela de Santiago<br />
es una épica de gran alcance histórico<br />
que detalla la vida, muchas veces<br />
insoportable, de los trabajadores en la<br />
industria de la caña de azúcar en Puerto<br />
Rico durante el siglo XIX. Una vez más,<br />
es la compleja protagonista de la escritora<br />
y su afán de vencer a pesar de todos los<br />

cólera que devastó a la isla) con valiente determinación,<br />
pero cuando la guerra civil estalla en los Estados Unidos,<br />
Ana encuentra su vida amenazada por las mismas personas<br />
sobre las cuales sus riquezas fueron forjadas: los esclavos.<br />
Sus historias inolvidables van a la par con la lucha de Ana<br />
por salvar su tierra y cumplir su destino. Al igual que la<br />
obra clásica de 1940, Tiempo Muerto de Méndez Ballester,<br />
Conquistadora se adentra en la historia de la industria<br />

Puerto Rican—a memoir comprised of personal childhood<br />
stories became an international best-seller ushering Ms.<br />
Santiago into the world’s literary spotlight. She was hailed<br />
as “a welcome new voice, full of passion and authority,”<br />
by the Washington Post Book World. Her second book<br />
and first novel, America’s Dream, published in 1996 and<br />
translated into 6 languages, showcased Ms. Santiago’s lyrical<br />
prose and extraordinary gifts as a storyteller. America,<br />
the protagonist, was a Viequense living in Esperanza who<br />
worked at La Casa del Frances. In a quixotic journey<br />
of self-discovery and armed with nothing but selfdetermination,<br />
America valiantly breaks a generational<br />
cycle of abuse and flees the island in search of a better life<br />
state side. Although the story had a passing resemblance<br />
to Rene Marquez theatrical masterpiece La Carreta (The<br />
Oxcart), the novel was aided immensely by a sense of<br />
place and given circumstances. (Esmeralda Santiago spent<br />
time in <strong>Vieques</strong> researching and writing a first draft.)<br />
Since 1996, she has written two other memoirs: Almost a<br />
Woman (1999) and The Turkish Lover (2004). For those<br />
of us that have admired her work, the wait for that elusive<br />
second novel has finally come to an<br />
end. Conquistadora, published last<br />
year by Knopf, has become one of the<br />
best reviewed novels of the year. Santiago’s<br />
sophomore novel is a powerful<br />
historical epic detailing the often<br />
excruciating life of those working in<br />
Puerto Rico’s sugarcane industry in<br />
the XIX century. And once again, it<br />
is the writer’s complex protagonist<br />
and her quest to succeed against<br />
all odds what makes this novel an<br />
extraordinary one. As a young girl<br />
growing up in Spain, Ana Cubillas<br />
is obsessed by the diaries of an<br />
ancestor—a conquistador that<br />
traveled with the likes of Ponce<br />
de Leon to Puerto Rico. Her<br />
sense of adventure is contagious and soon she convinces<br />
twin brothers Ramon and Inocente to travel across the<br />
ocean to Puerto Rico and claim an inherited asset: a<br />
remote sugar plantation (Hacienda Los Gemelos) in the<br />
southern part of Puerto Rico. At 18 she marries Ramon,<br />
and in 1844, she sails with the brothers across the ocean.<br />
Once in Puerto Rico, Ana relishes the challenges of running<br />
a sugar plantation in an untamable land. She faces<br />
each new calamity (death of loved ones, a devastating<br />
hurricane, a cholera epidemic that decimates the island)<br />
with valiant determination, but when the civil war breaks<br />
out in the United States, Ana finds her life threatened<br />
by the very people on whose backs her wealth has been<br />
built: slaves. Their unforgettable stories run parallel to<br />
Ana’s quest to save her land and fulfill her destiny. Like<br />
the 1940’s classic play, Tiempo Muerto (Dead Time) by<br />
Mendez Ballester, Conquistadora delves into the history<br />
of our sugarcane industry with a narrative that is both<br />
seductive and instructive. Meticulously researched, Conquistadora<br />
is a shimmering example of the Puerto Rican<br />
novel today. It deservedly places Santiago in the front row<br />
of extraordinary women writers from Latin America that<br />
includes Rosario Ferre (also from Puerto Rico) and Isabel<br />
Allende (Chile). Conquistadora is a must for those seeking<br />
a summer novel full of passion and adventure.<br />

Grosella<br />
>> Grosella, Otaheite (gooseberry-tree) was introduced<br />
from Timor to Jamaica and the Antilles around 1793 and<br />
spread throughout the Caribbean islands. They are available<br />
throughout the year here in <strong>Vieques</strong>, but mostly producing<br />
larger fruit yields in January through May. The fruit is yellowish<br />
green turning light yellow when ripe. The ripe fruit can be<br />
eaten fresh or cooked. Its flesh is firm and it’s taste sour yet<br />
in my own opinion very refreshing. They are naturally low in<br />
calories & fat, are substantially high in Vitamin C & Fiber, &<br />
low in sodium.<br />
In parts of Asia, they’re eaten fresh and/or sprinkled<br />
with salt to neutralize the acidity; pickled or as sweetened<br />
dried fruits ; the juice is used to make cold drinks and the<br />
fruit pulp to make vinegar. They’re also used to flavor many<br />
dishes. Practically all of the tree (root, bark & leaves) are<br />
used for medicinal purposes.<br />
There are many grosella trees here in <strong>Vieques</strong> . In fact,<br />
you might notice while driving around our island, local<br />
children picking and eating these precious little light yellow<br />
berries from trees. Traditionally, Viequenses use the fruit<br />
to make preserves, jams & jellies; turning bright red when<br />
cooked and tasting ‘maravilloso’ (marvelous).<br />
I hope you too get a chance to taste<br />
the interesting grosella fruit; which <strong>Vieques</strong><br />
offers for free and for the picking<br />
when found along our roads.<br />
If you want to make something<br />
different to spark up your next meal as<br />
an accompaniment to any meat, fowl,<br />
seafood, rice or veggie, give this quick,<br />
tasty & refreshing relish a try. Hope<br />
you enjoy it!<br />
My Grosella Relish<br />
1 bunch of ripe grosellas (about a cup) - crushed with<br />
sea salt & pitted<br />
1-inch piece ginger<br />
1/3 large red onion (chopped).<br />
1/2 cup shredded fresh coconut (or unsweetened<br />
shredded dry coconut flakes)<br />
2 ajies dulces (seeded) - if you like hot/spicy like me,<br />
1 jalapeño pepper or half ají dulce & half jalapeño<br />
2 sprigs cilantro (chopped)<br />
salt & pepper (to taste)<br />
Procedure:<br />
Using a mortar & pestle pound all the ingredients<br />
together except for the cilantro.<br />
Season with salt & pepper. Lastly, add cilantro and<br />
mix to combine.<br />
Serve immediately or refrigerate until ready to use.<br />

Desdeentonces se esparció a través de las islas en el Caribe.<br />
Se encuentran todo el año aquí en <strong>Vieques</strong> y producenmayor<br />
cantidad de frutos durante los meses de enero a mayo. La<br />
fruta es verde amarillenta y al madurar se torna amarillo<br />
claro. Se puede comer cruda o cocida. Su textura es firme y<br />
su sabor agrio, a la vez, en mi opinión muy refrescante. Son<br />
naturalmente bajos en calorías y grasa; sustancialmente altos<br />
en vitamina C, contiene mucha fibra y son bajos en sodio.<br />
En Asia, se come la grosella con sal, lo cual tiene el efecto de<br />
neutralizar su acidez; en curtidos o frutos secos endulzados;<br />
el jugo de la fruta se emplea en la preparación de refrescos y<br />
la pulpa para hacer vinagres. También se le añade a algunos<br />
platos para realzar sus sabores. Casi todo el árbol (raíz,<br />
corteza, hojas, etc.) se usa para remedios medicinales. Son<br />
muchos los arboles de grosella que existen aquí en <strong>Vieques</strong>.<br />
De hecho, es muy probable que al pasear por nuestra islita,<br />
se habrán fijado en niños recogiendo y comiendo esas<br />
pequeñas y preciadas delicias amarillas directamente de sus<br />
arboles. Tradicionalmente en <strong>Vieques</strong> se usa las grosellas<br />
para confeccionar conservas, jaleas y mermeladas; tornándose<br />
rojos los frutos al cocinarse y convirtiéndose<br />
en riquísimos y maravillosos manjares.<br />
Las grosellas, abundan por las calles de nuestra<br />
isla y al alcance de todo aquel que desee probarla.<br />
Si quieren preparar algo distinto con la grosella<br />
como acompañamiento para la carne, ave, marisco,<br />
arroz o vegetales; pruebe esta rica, rápida y refrescante<br />
receta. ¡Espero les guste!<br />
Mi Aliño Fresco de Grosellas<br />
1 taza de grosellas - machacado con un poco<br />
de sal y despepitado<br />
jengibre fresco (más o menos 1 lasca de una pulgada)<br />
cebolla roja grande (cortadita)<br />
1/2 taza de tela de coco rallada o coco deshidratado<br />
(sin endulzar)<br />
2 ajíes dulces (sin semillas) - si lo prefiere picantito como<br />
a mí, use 1 jalapeño (a su gusto) o combine mitad ají<br />
dulce y mitad jalapeño<br />
2 ramitas de cilantro o recao (cortaditos)<br />
sal & pimienta (a gusto)<br />
Procedimiento:<br />
En un pilón, machaque todos los ingredientes menos el<br />
cilantro.<br />
Sazone con sal y pimienta y luego incorpore la hierba al<br />
final mezclando hasta incorporar los ingredientes.<br />
Sirva inmediatamente o refrigere hasta que lo vaya a servir.<br />

>> Una hierba común en las carreteras de<br />
<strong>Vieques</strong> lo es la hierba de ajo, comúnmente<br />
llamada anamú, la cual es una verdadera<br />
fuente de poder farmacológico gratutio para<br />
cosechar. Esta hierba es nativa de América<br />
tropical y del Caribe, y su nombre científico<br />
es Petiveria alliacea. Crece hasta 3 pies de<br />
alto y tiene hojas opuestas de color verde<br />
oscuro y espigas delgadas con pequeñas<br />
flores blancas. El nombre de su especie hace<br />
referencia al olor similar que emiten el follaje<br />
y las raíces del ajo cuando se aplastan,<br />
de ahí su nombre común en inglés.<br />
En <strong>Vieques</strong>, las hojas calentadas al vapor<br />
se utilizan como compresas calientes para<br />
curar absesos. Las féminas toman un té para<br />
facilitar las menstruaciones tardías. También<br />
es utilizada como un abortivo, pero no<br />
debe ser experimentado sin la supervisión<br />
de un terapeuta homeopático. Es utilizada,<br />
junto con otras hierbas para preparar baños<br />
para niños con fiebre. El té de Anamú es<br />
ingerido para aliviar varios tipos de dolor.<br />
Pruebas de laboratorio indican que la<br />
hierba de ajo contiene una amplia gama de<br />
elementos anti-leucémicos, anti-tumores y<br />
anti-cancerosos, así como compuestos que<br />
destruyen numerosos tipos de bacterias, virus<br />
y hongos. También se ha documentado<br />
clínicamente que tiene propiedades hipoglucémicas:<br />
disminuye los niveles de azúcar<br />
en la sangre por más de un 60% una hora<br />
después de haber sido consumida. En Cuba,<br />
ha sido utilizada por años para combatir<br />

United in love, we will heal.<br />
Vigil for Peace<br />
More than 50 people, including families<br />
effected and their supporters, attended a peace<br />
vigil held on April 18th in the Placita de Hijos<br />
Ausentes (Missing Children’s Plaza) in Isabel II.<br />
Ten children of the Viequense Oasis Education<br />
Center played Bomba and Plena at the event.<br />
The vigil honored the lives of <strong>Vieques</strong><br />
residents who have died since 2006 as a result<br />
of violence or car accidents. It is hoped that<br />
remembering them and supporting their grieving<br />
families, will help prevent more needless tragedy<br />
in <strong>Vieques</strong> and for the families to know that they<br />
can count on their community to “heal”.<br />
Eighteen-year old student Luis Hernandez,<br />
expressing the solidarity from his school Nuestra<br />
Escuela, brought a very touching message<br />
when he said, “I have faced many difficult times<br />
in my life, but I do not give up hope. Don’t lose<br />
faith in the youth of <strong>Vieques</strong>. We want to have a<br />
good future. If we all work together, we can do<br />

Unidos en amor, sanaremos.<br />
Vigilia por la Paz<br />
Más de 50 personas, incluyendo a las familias<br />
afectadas y sus acompañantes, asistieron a la vigilia<br />
de paz celebrada el 18 de abril en la Placita<br />
de Hijos Ausentes en Isabel II. Diez estudiantes<br />
del Centro Educativo Viequense Oasis bailaron<br />
Bomba y Plena en el evento.<br />
La vigilia honró la vida de los residentes de<br />
<strong>Vieques</strong> que han fallecido desde 2006, como<br />
resultado de la violencia o accidentes de autos. Se<br />
espera que al recordarlos y apoyar a sus familiares,<br />
ayudemos a prevenir las tragedias en <strong>Vieques</strong> y<br />
para que las familias sepan que pueden contar<br />
con su comunidad para sanar sus heridas.<br />

edad, en solidaridad con Nuestra Escuela trajo<br />
un mensaje bien emotivo cuando dijo: “he<br />
pasado por muchos momentos difíciles en mi vida,<br />
pero no pierdo la esperanza. No pierdan la fe en<br />
la juventud de <strong>Vieques</strong>. Queremos tener un buen<br />
futuro. Si todos trabajamos juntos, podemos hacer<br />

técnica de narración de<br />
cuentos japoneses a los<br />
niños de <strong>Vieques</strong><br />
>> Faro de Punta Mulas, <strong>Vieques</strong> – durante los días 18 y 19 de mayo, la ganadora del Premio<br />
Emmy, Tere Marichal, mejor conocida como María Chuzema, deleitó a las familias de <strong>Vieques</strong> con<br />
tres días de fantasía. Los niños de la isla, junto a sus padres y maestros, fueron invitados a disfrutar<br />
de un fin de semana de talleres de narración de cuentos, técnicas para hacer marionetas y<br />
creatividad.<br />
Sumergida en su personaje, vestida con brillantes colores que iluminaron los ojos de los niños,<br />
María Chuzema entró con su maleta llena de historias y marionetas. Ella cautivó a la audiencia<br />
con sorprendentes aventuras inspiradas en eventos alrededor del mundo. Dentro de las muchas<br />
técnicas de narración de cuentos, ella utilizó Kamishibai, originada en los templos budistas en<br />
el Siglo 12, donde los monjes utilizaban rollos con imágenes para contar historias que contenían<br />
lecciones de moral.<br />
El público se unió con sus canciones y aplaudió al ritmo de sus cuentos, disfrutando de cada<br />
momento. Los padres se sentaron junto a sus hijos y escucharon con atención, riéndose con los<br />
diferentes personajes que ella sacaba de su maleta.<br />
Los tres días de talleres fueron auspiciados por Black Beard Sports, W Retreat & Spa y Camaramundi,<br />
los cuales generosamente donaron todos los materiales para llevar a cabo el taller de<br />
fabricación de marionetas.<br />
Tere Marichal Lugo. La Sra. Marichal es escritora, ilustradora, narradora de cuentos y titiritera.<br />
Su trabajo hace referencia al campo de la Educación Pre-Escolar y Primaria en América Latina y<br />
ha sido anfitriona de un programa de televisión infantil por más de 20 años llamado “La Casa de<br />
María Chuzema”.<br />

>> Faro Punta Mulas, <strong>Vieques</strong>— On the 18th and 19th of May, Emmy award winner, Tere<br />
Marichal better known as Maria Chuzema , delighted <strong>Vieques</strong> families with three days of fantasy.<br />
The children of the island along with their parents and teachers, were invited to enjoy a weekend<br />
of workshops on storytelling , puppet making techniques and creativity .<br />
Immersed in her usual character, dressed in brilliant colors that enthused the eyes of the<br />
children, Maria Chuzema entered with her suitcase full of stories and puppets. She charmed her<br />
audience with amazing adventures inspired by events from around the world. Among the many<br />
types of storytelling techniques she used Kamishibai, originated in Buddhist temples in the 12th<br />
century, where monks used picture scrolls to convey stories with moral lessons.<br />
The audience joined in with her songs and clapped to the beat of her tales, enjoying every<br />
moment of it. Parents sat side by side with their children and listened carefully, laughing at the<br />
different characters she whipped out of her suitcase.<br />
The three day workshop was sponsored by Black Beard Sports, W Retreat and Spa and Camaramundi<br />
which very graciously donated all the materials for the puppet making workshop.<br />

is referenced in the field of Pre-School and Elementary Education in Latin America and she has<br />
hosted a children’s’ television show for over 20 years “La casa de María Chuzema”.<br />
