Study model
The area of Matosinhos is intimately
associated with the Port of Leixoes, –its
activities and its logistics, –of which
the berths, the stowage areas, and the
container parks are an integral part. In
recent decades, taking advantage of the
accessibility and road infrastructure,
these industrial activities have been
complemented by large-scale retail
formats, such a IKEA’s Mar Shopping,
Sonea Sierra’s NorteShopping, in addition
to various big-box retailers like Leroy
Merlin and Decathlon.
It is in this highly competitive context that
PROMONTORIO won the competition
for the design of Matosinhos Retail Park.
The image of the containers, in all their
relentlessly colourful juxtaposition of
pilled-up boxes with bright freight logos,
is the inspirational reference proposed for
the main façade composition and as an
all-encompassing design theme in retail
identity, pavements, graphics and signage,
etc. Indeed, container shipping, even as a
business activity related to retail, still falls
within the type of trade which underpins
the rationale behind a retail park, that is,
large format, low operating costs and hard
discount.
