Welcome
Welcome to the 2007 UPA Club Championships!
Every year it seems that the tournament attracts
more people and more attention. We hope that means
people think it’s a great event to be a part of, and we
hope that you will feel the same.
The competition is without a doubt the primary
focus of the event, with Ultimate fans all over the
US, Canada, and the world tuning in to see who will
earn Ultimate’s top prize. In the Masters Division
there will definitely be a “new” champion, but with
the players and teams in contention, it’s likely the
winners won’t be lifting a trophy for the first time.
In the Women’s Division, it seems that top-seeded,
reigning champs, Fury have solidified themselves as
a favorite to repeat. The Open and Mixed divisions
both have teams at the top spot who were not at the
tournament last year, although the reigning champs
and multiple other teams in each division are close
behind, looking to knock off the new top dogs. And of
course, this year’s top US team in each division will
qualify for Worlds next year in Vancouver. Plus, the
top Open and Women’s teams will receive all expense
paid trips to Japan for the 2008 Dream Cup (see
write-up in event guide for more info). As if the teams
needed any more motivation to be at their best…
In addition to the games, there is a lot of other
stuff going on. Be sure to check out VC Ultimate’s
tournament merchandise, as well as the always
happening Five Ultimate tent. A new food vendor will
be joining an old favorite to provide great grub all
weekend. The cameras of UltiVillage will be roaming
the fields, and if you’re in the right place at the right
SITE RULES
No Glass! This is important. We’re at a world class
polo facility. Some of these horses are worth more
than your homes. If you are found on the fields with a
glass container, you will be told to leave the Polo Club
for the duration of the tournament.
Dogs must be leashed! We would prefer that you
leave the pooches at home. We don’t want dogs locked
in cars or tied up in the sun. If you must bring your
dog, leash it. They can spook the horses, which could
cause us to lose our privileges at the Polo Club.
time, you might make it into their footage, or even
star in a Clip of the Day! An exciting addition this
year is the introduction of the VC Green Program,
sponsored by VC Ultimate in cooperation with the
UPA. Please help us reduce waste at the event by
using the recycling bins for all your cans and bottles.
And as always, free beer will be available each day
in the Beer Garden. You must be 21+ with ID to
enter, and you can’t take beer you get there outside
the Beer Garden area. You’re welcome to bring your
own beer to the event, but free tournament beer has
to be consumed in the Beer Garden. As part of the
VC Green Program, please use (and reuse) the green
stadium cup from your player pack, or purchased
at the VC booth, for the Beer Garden. Please drink
responsibly and be respectful of the Beer Garden
rules and staff.
After you leave the fields, enjoy yourselves around
Sarasota and Siesta Key. Drink specials have been
arranged at two bars on Siesta Key for Friday and
Saturday nights. Please be respectful of the places
you go and the places you stay. That’s what Ultimate
is about, and we want the people of Sarasota to enjoy
us being around and excited to have us come back.
Above all, have a great time! Play with class,
win or lose, and be respectful in everything you do on
and off the field.
Will Deaver, UPA Championship Director
Spectators and equipment must stay at least 3
meters away from sidelines! Where there are buffer
lines, respect them. Where there are not buffer lines,
stay back at least 3 meters.
Trash and Recycling! Please help make the
new Green Program, initiated and sponsored by VC
Ultimate, a success. Place bottles and cans in the
recycling receptacles and place trash in the trash.
Thanks.
2007 UPA Club Championships - Event Guide
COMPETITION RULES
- 11th Edition Rules of Ultimate will be in effect.
- All games to 15, point-cap at 17.
- Half-time is 10 minutes.
- Each team has two timeouts per half.
- Regardless of how many timeouts a team has
used before overtime, during overtime each
team has one timeout.
- Overtime: A game is in overtime if tied at one
point less than original game total (e.g. In a
game to 15 goals, overtime occurs when the
score reaches 14-14).
- Soft time cap goes on at end of round time on
schedule. Add two points to higher score after
first score after soft time cap. Game ends when
first team reaches new game total, or when first
team reaches 15 ahead by at least two points,
whichever comes first.
- A hard time cap will be put into effect for all
pool and placement games (5th-16th, Masters
3rd). The hard time cap will go on 35 minutes
after the soft time cap for pool games and 20
minutes after the soft time cap for placement
games. When the hard time cap goes on, finish
the point in progress and the game is over. If it’s
tied, play one more point.
- Caps do not affect timeouts.
PLACEMENT GAME RULES
(5-8TH AND 9-16TH ON SATURDAY AND
ANY 3RD PLACE GAMES)
For games that could affect the strength wildcard:
- If a game will determine a strength wildcard,
or leads to a game that might determine a
strength wildcard, it must be played. If a
team still chooses to forfeit such a game, that
team’s region/division will not be eligible for
any nationals’ wildcards the following year
(size, strength, growth), unless given a specific
exception by the National Division Director.
- S pecial case : In the first round of the 5-8
bracket, if there are exactly two teams in
contention for a strength wildcard, those teams
will play each other in that first round regardless
of the originally scheduled match-ups.
For games that do not affect the strength wildcard:
- If neither team wants to play a scheduled
game that leads to another round (i.e. semis
for the 5th, 9th, 13th brackets): Those two
teams finish tied for the placement of the lower
portion of their bracket and the other game
is now for two higher spots. (e.g. In a 9-12
semifinal game, the two forfeiting teams would
be tied for 11th and the other semifinal would
become the game for 9/10.)
- If neither team wants to play a scheduled game
that does not lead to another round: Both teams
will finish tied for the higher placement, since
they went out at the same time.
- If only one team wants to play a scheduled game
that leads to another round (e.g. semis for the
5th, 9th, 13th brackets): The forfeiting team will
finish at the bottom of its respective bracket (i.e.
8th, 12th or 16th).
- If only one team wants to play a scheduled
game that does not lead to another round: The
game will be treated as a loss for the forfeiting
team and a win for the other team, with final
placement reflecting that outcome.
WFDF WORLDS (2008 WUGC)
QUALIFICATION:
- If two non-US teams make it to the final in
the Open Division, a 3rd place game will be
necessary to determine the US champion and
Worlds qualifying team. If necessary, the game
to determine this team will take place on Sunday
at the same time as the Open Division final, on
an adjacent field.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
Medical staff, including athletic trainers, will be on site at tournament central to treat injuries, handle
emergencies, and provide some preventative care. The event will provide standard athletic tape, prewrap,
ice, and some bandages. Other supplies, including special tape/bandages and anti-inflammatory
drugs, you will need to bring yourself or you may be charged by the training staff for those supplies. If
there is an injury on a field that needs medical attention, inform a field marshal and they will radio in to
the trainers. If you have issues that need attention in the morning before play, please show up early to
avoid long waits in line. The trainers will be at the fields by 7:30AM each day.
Directions to the local hospital can be found in the “Directions” (page 5) section of this program.
Concussions
- Concussions are brain injuries that can occur as a result of a blow to the head.
- Symptoms may include headache, nausea, vision problems, confusion, balance problems.
- If you think you or one of your teammates might have a concussion, tell your coach and have the person
see a medical professional. Medical staff are on hand at the event at Tournament Central.
Heat, Nutrition and Hydration
- Heat-related illness occurs where body cooling by evaporation is limited. Sweating depletes the body’s
salt and moisture, which leads to dehydration. If a player recognizes any signs or symptoms of heatrelated
illness, he or she should treat the problem immediately.
- Signs and Symptoms of Heat Illness can include change in level of consciousness, abdominal cramps,
nausea/vomiting, fatigue/tingling, chills, inability to spit, dry mucous membranes, decreased urine
output and change in color.
- Prevention and Treatment of Heat Illness
- Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and carbonated beverages.
- Medications such as antihistamines, decongestants, certain asthma medications, and diuretics
can increase risk for heat illness. Avoid them if possible.
- Avoid certain nutritional supplements (such as caffeine and ephedrine) that can dehydrate the
body and/or increase metabolism and heat production.
- Know your body – Be honest! Are you fit enough to perform under current conditions?
- Drink and eat – Eat and drink (water AND sports drinks) “optimally” before, during, and after
play. Potassium is important (good sources include: sports drinks, yogurt, grapefruit juice,
bananas, oranges). Sodium is also important (good sources include: sports drinks, vegetable
juices, pretzels, nuts, cheese and crackers). After play, carbohydrates are important: foods such
as potatoes, honey, cereal, white bread, corn chips, sports drinks, jelly beans, rice cakes, bagels
crackers, gummy candies).
- Don’t drink too much. Over-hydrating can be dangerous if it leads to a fluid and electrolyte imbalance.
- Monitor your urine – Clear/copious = hydrated. Dark = Need water/electrolytes.
- Be sensitive to prior illness – If you’ve been sick, your body may be more susceptible to dehydration.
- Rest and cool down after play – Find shade, wet the skin, get in front of a fan or breeze.

2007 UPA Club Championships - Event Guide
Sideline Safety
- Players and spectators should make every effort to keep objects, including but not limited to bags,
strollers, chairs, coolers and tents, as far away from the playing field as possible. If there are restraining
lines around your field, keep all objects behind the lines.
- If a player feels that an object on the sideline is not safe, s/he should inform Event Staff and should
refrain from playing until s/he is satisfied that safe conditions have been established.
- The UPA and Event Staff reserve the right to move or remove objects or spectators from on or near the
playing field if those conditions are, in the opinion of the UPA or Event Staff, unsafe for players, staff,
or spectators.
Lightning Guidelines
- Event staff will communicate with players and spectators via PA system and field marshals equipped
with radios that there is a lightning danger, play will be stopped, and everyone should seek shelter.
- Safe Shelter for players and spectators at the polo grounds include any enclosed building or fully
enclosed vehicle with a hard top and closed windows.
- Event staff will use the Flash-to Bang method to determine when to send people to shelter. By
the time the Flash-to-Bang count has reached 30 seconds, all individuals should be in a safe
shelter location.
- If you can’t get to a safe shelter, try to avoid being the tallest object in an open field or on open water.
Avoid other tall objects, metal objects, and water. Assume a crouch position with only the balls of your
feet touching the ground, your arms wrapped around your knees, and your head lowered. Minimize
contact with the ground. Do not lie flat.
- Avoid using telephone land lines. Cell phones are safe provided the person has followed other safety
guidelines.
- Event staff will indicate to players when play is going to resume. Team captains should meet at
Tournament Central to receive instructions for resuming play and any schedule modifications.
BE A PART OF THE VC GREEN PROGRAM
The VC Green Program’s first large-scale initiative has created the opportunity
to recycle cans and bottles at the 2007 UPA Club Championships – not an easy
logistical task, but with the full support of the UPA, we’ve been able to actualize
this idea.
We hope that you’ll support this year’s VC Green Program initiative by recycling
responsibly at the 2007 UPA Club Championships.
Dispose of cans and bottles in the receptacles provided.
Please don’t throw waste into the recycling bins that
have been set up. One piece of garbage can ruin an entire
container of recyclable goods.
Together, we can all help make this a greener event.
2007 UPA Club Championships - Event Guide
spirit awards
Ultimate has traditionally relied upon a spirit of sportsmanship which places the responsibility for fair
play on the player himself. Highly competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of the bond
of mutual respect between players, adherence to the agreed-upon rules of the game, or the basic joy of
play. - UPA 11th Edition Rules of Ultimate
Team Awards
Following every game, each team will be asked to rate its opponent using the following UPA Spirit
Ratings Guidelines, approved by the UPA Board of Directors in July, 2007. These ratings will be averaged
and the team in each division with the highest average rating will be awarded the Team Spirit Award
after their division’s finals.
UPA Spirit Ratings Guidelines
The ratings are ordered from 5 (indicating the highest level of spirit) thru 1 (the lowest level of spirit):
5: Highest level of respect shown throughout game towards opponents, officials, and spectators. For
the level of play, showed excellent knowledge of the rules and abided by them throughout the game.
Any conflicts were resolved amicably and without incident. Opposing team’s conduct added to our
enjoyment of the game. The opposing team unfailingly played fairly and with an excellent attitude.
4: Respect shown throughout the game towards opponents, officials, and spectators. For the level of
play, showed above average knowledge of the rules and abided by them throughout the game. Any
conflicts were resolved favorably and without incident. Opposing team’s conduct did not detract from
our enjoyment of the game. The opposing team played fairly and with a good attitude.
3: Generally exhibited respect towards opponents, officials, and spectators. For the level of play, showed
adequate knowledge of the rules and abided by them during the game. Any conflicts were resolved
plainly and without incident. Opposing team’s conduct generally did not detract from our enjoyment
of the game. The opposing team generally played fairly and with a decent attitude.
2: Exhibited a lack of respect towards opponents, officials, and/or spectators. For the level of play,
showed a lack of knowledge of or disregard for the rules at points during the game. Any conflicts were
resolved heatedly or led to contentious incidents. Opposing team’s conduct detracted somewhat from
our enjoyment of the game. The opposing team played unfairly and/or with a poor attitude.
1: Exhibited a major lack of respect towards opponents, officials, and/or spectators. For the level of play,
exhibited no knowledge of the rules or blatantly disregarded them during the game. Conflicts were
resolved acrimoniously or led directly to contentious incidents. Opposing team’s conduct made the
game basically unenjoyable. The opposing team played unfairly and their attitude was abysmal.

2007 UPA Club Championships - Event Guide
Individual Awards
Teams will be each be asked to nominate a player from their own team who they feel displays the highest
level of spirit. The definition of spirit is up to each team, but could include elements of sportsmanship,
leadership, perseverance, fire, etc. Choose the person whose attitude you wish other people on your team
would emulate and who other players off your team admire.
Individual spirit winners will receive a medal and prize disc (courtesy of DISCRAFT). Thanks to Discraft
for their support of Ultimate and Spirit of the Game!
Peter Farricker Spirit of the Game Award - The spirit award
in the Open Division is called the Farricker Spirit Award, named
for Peter Farricker, a player who embodied Spirit of the Game
to those who knew him and those who played with or against
him. This award is given to a player in the Open Division of
the UPA’s Championship Series adjudged to have exhibited
personal responsibility, integrity, and fairness combined with
a high standard of playing ability. Each qualifying Open team
nominates one player from their own team as the person who best
represents the spirit of the game. At the Open Championship,
each nominee is honored with a disc and pin or set of Mardi
Gras beads. Our hope is that the people wearing the Mardi Gras
beads will be connected to Pete, each other and the Spirit of the Game, and become role models for their
teammates and opponents. A selection committee watches the open semis and selects one of the 4
semifinal nominees as the winner. The award will be presented after the Open Finals. Previous winners
include Moses Rifkin, Andy Crews, Damien Scott, Jeff Eastham-Anderson, and Allan Cowan.
Kathy Pufahl Spirit of the Game Award - The introduction of the
Kathy Pufahl Cande Spirit of the Game Award will build upon
the foundations of SOTG that are reflected in the Farricker Spirit
Award; Ability, Fairness, and Integrity. The Kathy Pufahl Cande
Spirit Award will build upon that foundation by also recognizing
those individuals who give back to our sport. The Kathy Pufahl
Spirit Award is given to the player(s) adjudged to have exhibited
personal responsibility, integrity, and selfless contribution to
Ultimate, combined with a high standard of playing ability.
Each qualifying Women’s team nominates one player from their
team as the person who best represents the spirit of the game
and has contributed in a substantial way to their ultimate
community. At the Club Championships, each of the 16 nominees is honored with a memento reflective
of Kathy’s love of horticulture. A vote of the qualifying teams will determine the recipient of the Pufahl
Award, which will be presented after the Women’s Finals. Previous winners include Vida Town, Kati
Halmos, and Kristine Gill.
2008 WFDF World Ultimate Championships Qualification
The 2007 UPA Club Championships is the event that will qualify one US team from each division
(Masters, Mixed, Open and Women’s) for the 2008 World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) World Ultimate
and Guts Championships (WUGC), to be held August 2-9, 2008 in Vancouver, Canada. The top finishing
US-based team at the 2007 UPA Club Championships will qualify to represent the United States at
the 2008 WUGC. In the Open Division, where there are two non-US teams in the field, a 3rd place game
will be held to determine the US qualifier, if the two non-US teams make the final. The 3rd place game, if
needed, will be held on Sunday, October 28th, at the same time as the Open Division final.
Above and Beyond
Captain: Arnold Sanchez
The home for a bunch of aging friends from New York City and the
surrounding areas, Above & Beyond has added some talented and
spirited players from the team known as Salt, as well as some dudes
from Pike, Twisted Metal and elsewhere. Above & Beyond is making its
fourth straight appearance in Sarasota, having reached the Finals in
’05 and the Semis in ’06. Under the steady and firm hand of Captain
Arnold Sanchez, we plan to play hard every point, huck the hammer when
it comes and enjoy the beach and brews at the end of every day. Good luck
to all the teams in the tournament and we look forward to some great
competition on the fields.
BIGS
Captains: Chris Eaton, Pat Benson,
Layne Davis
Coaches: Pat Benson, Davie Hill,
Kerry Karter
We are so damn proud of our little section in the northwest that we named
our team BIGSKY in 2006. That was a magical year; KAVU had disbanded
and a bunch of Boise players turned 33. With no expectations, a fairly
easy road to Nationals, and a big boost of talent and experience from
our Bay Area brothers, we ended up being the happiest losers of what
was likely the best double game point Master’s final in UPA history. So,
we’re back; fortunate enough to earn a bid out of a very tough region. We
are elated; there’s nothing more fun than going into battle with a bunch
of your buddies. We’re going large and pushing deep this year, forever
chanting “BIGS!!!”
Boneyard
Captain: Dwayne Purper
Fortified with kackalacky backy juice (it’s not yet a banned substance),
old players take on the sheen of newborns. Watch for the brown spittle
DoG
Captains: Jim Parinella, Alex de
Frondeville, Jeff Brown
DoG (Death or Glory) is one of the most storied franchises in ultimate
history. Created after years of crushing defeats, this Boston team won
six consecutive Open National championships from 1994-1999 and
continued to be a presence on the national scene for years afterward.
With the retirement this past winter of the final two original members of
the team and the merger with a crosstown rival, the Open team in Boston
decided to create a new identity, thus opening the way for the name to
be passed back to a slew of the vintage veterans. Bolstered by long-term
friends of DoGs and some new additions, the team hopes to make an
impact in its first venture into Masters. Look for the old trademark style of
high-percentage offense and an innovative mix of defenses.
Ironwood
Captains: Tim Streit, Ben Thielhorn
In the American Southwest, there grows a tree. Ironwood. An old tree. A
strong tree. Ironwood. Fed with only sparse desert rain, it may grow 1500
years. When cut, its wood can dull a steel blade. Yet this resilient desert
tree can endure the fierce Autumn storms of Florida. This is our tree. This
is our team. Ironwood.
Our roots lie deep in the Arizona earth. Our top is reborn with a year’s new
growth. Our branches now reach the blue Pacific, Sprawl to the Colorado
Rockies and the Midwest heartland and touch the Jersey shore. Twice
battered by Gulf storms, newly strengthened by California sun, this tree
reaches toward Florida a third time, eagerly seeking the ultimate mix of
competition and spirit.
Miami
Captains: Darius Khonsary, Erik Peterson
“Miami” as it is creatively named is made up of players mostly from Miami.
Although the offense still has a little Refugee flavor, the team is
not quite a reincarnation of Miami teams past - we sprinkled in some
specialized talent from neighboring cities to bulge up our defense. To
our divisional comrades, welcome to the Sunshine State. We hope you
lose… but in a nice way.
Old and in the WAY
Captains: Bob Pease, Gary Foreman, Bo
From the 80’s to 00’s, these OLD huckers have truly been showing THE
WAY. A long-standing team of Colorado-based, masters-level players, Old
and in the Way has been providing Ultimate competition and camaraderie
for over 20 years. We have a great legacy – we’ve won two National
Championships (1999 & 2005) and one WFDF World Championship
(Heilbronn, Germany 2000) and have finished no worse than third in the
country in the UPA National Series for nine straight years. We are proud
of our record but also gain great satisfaction in being a great TEAM -
with continuity of leadership and familiar faces dating back to our first
National Championship. With an influx of some new, younger teams this
year’s competition will be the best ever seen in the Masters Division.
Watch out for “OLD”! This year’s challenge? Don’t let Bo lose his security
Good luck to all the teams in the 2007 UPA National Series Masters
O.L.D. S.A.G.
Captain: Steve Wherry
This is O.L.D. S.A.G.’s 7th trip to Sarasota since 2000.
The team started when a burning bush caught the eye of Jim Brose in
Glacier National Park. From behind the bush a voice called out, “You must
gather a group of men who are at least 33 years old and bring them to
Sarasota, Florida every October. Oh yea, and bring a disc with you.”
Having lived an uneventful life to that point Brose set out on the mission.
First came Jim Viner, then Pickleman, Adlis, McDonough, Kelly, and Sauce.
Then Steve Wherry and his minions joined and soon there were 14 who
braved the heckles and taunts of heresy from the local villagers as they
boarded that first plane to Florida.
The next year was more of the same, but in the year after that, the
pilgrimage grew bigger – Paul Minecci, Sam Sackett, Curtis Maier, Hector
Hernandez, Chris O’Connor and Big Rick Atkins left their wives at home
without explanation. The sun shone brightly upon them when they arrived
in Florida and rainbows filled the skies. Their throws flew on the wings
of angels and their D’s struck like bolts from Zeus. Now champions they
awaited a further sign, but none came.
And so, this team from Philadelphia returns again. This year’s group is the
biggest ever, and it includes first-timers: Len Magargee, Clayton Coltman,
and Billy Maroon. We make the trip to Sarasota to answer a vague calling,
and when we take the fields we play with the burning desire that comes
from the recognition that this may be our - One Last Ditch Shot at Glory!
REAL Huck
Captain: Johnny Hock
REAL Huck quickly formed in 2006, quickly qualified for the Club
Championships and quickly declined the bid once we learned the other
teams would not be playing “savage seven” like we would have been. We
are back with bolstered numbers for 2007 claiming to be Chicago based,
but some would say we are a Buckeye flavored Midwest melting pot. We
are early in the team’s evolution, intend to become a Midwest mainstay,
and have a vision of completing a REAL Huck!
are searching for integrity.
We start our Spirit belief system in the individual because when one
player is weak it brings down the entire sport. If a player drops a pass
or throws a turn TP beats that player into submission by reading the new
Spirit guidelines for final participants until they weep for their sin. As
a team we know how to respond when calls drain a game of Spirit. We
practice our initial call responses together by shouting out in the stretch
circle, “Are You Done?” “Do You Use That Mouth To Eat!” and of course
team favorite, “Why Are You Still Talking?”
Perhaps the most controversial aspect of TP is our outreach program. We
believe every game is an opportunity to teach and we are not afraid to
use force in our instruction. While some disapprove, we have at all times
three to five players ready to beat opposing players who resist our brand
of Spirit. If you are an opposing player, be warned that discussing calls
can lead to a Spirit readjustment. While everyone on our team prays for
the day this sport has referees, until that time, we will continue to be this
sport’s enviable combination of Spirit model and enforcer.
Amp
Captains: Jeff Snader, Kathi Jenkins,
Peter Knappenberger
Amp is based in Philly, and is proud to represent the Founders’ section
in Sarasota for a third straight year. We have certain core beliefs that
guide our team. We believe that the Ab Lounge at the end of a four hour
practice is the best part of the weekend. We believe that whatever is said
on the Podium of Truth stays in the room. We believe that F-day should be
a national holiday. We believe that Amp was a better name choice than
anything to do with Rocky Balboa, the Liberty Bell, or cheesesteaks. We
believe that it is game time and, hell yeah, we are going to win.
Axis of C’ville
Captains: Oliver Platts-Mills, Natasha
Sienitsky and Kevin Kusy
Since our birth, springing spontaneously from the igneous core of
Virginia’s Blue Ridge, the question has been raised reflectively, what sort
of axis do we claim to be? For, surely, we have conceived to orient linearly,
around which our polymorphic members fancy to rotate. Equally, this team
and our single purpose has become a sort of geometrical safe haven, a
promise of orientation for many of our otherwise-wayward comrades. Or,
in a similar fashion, do we see ourselves as a sort of dentine projection, a
keystone at the vertebral core of our sleepy college town?
Could it be this simple? Could these, in sum, suffice to posit the story
of our forming as an inevitable consequence of so many molecules in
motion? Or, more boldly, must we venture to approach a more contemporary
invocation of this beguiling homonym? Do we, like so many rogue states,
contrive to develop weapons of such power to threaten the established
hierarchy? Would our strict allegiance to the principles of three of this
nation’s greatest guiding lights (and hippest sleeve ornaments) allow for
such a Judas kiss?
So far, despite our most earnest attempts to understand the nominal
core of our nascent identity, we can offer only this simple, intoxicating
drumbeat of a response: Who are we? Just axis.
Bad Larry
Captains: Bill Burke, Shannon Smith
Wanna know a secret? I haven’t brought a single morsel of food to an
Ultimate Tournament all season. There’s no need to, I just steal it from the
rest of my teammates. They all bring plenty, and good stuff too. Honestly,
I don’t think I’ve ever seen an Ultimate team that eats as much as Bad
Larry. It’s not all that shocking, if you actually take a moment to look at
the people on the team. That guy, #4, could probably fill out a C-cup…I’m
not kidding. Not to mention that thick and stout girl handling all the time.
I bet she can wolf it down. I don’t steal from everybody though. We have
this one guy who’s so skinny that he’s practically 2-dimensional. I feel
bad stealing from him. Plus his food is usually boring like granola bars
and crap. I wouldn’t steal from #7 either. He’s a complete head case and
would probably kill me if he caught me. Luckily he got cut at Nationals
last year, so I don’t have to worry about it.
Here’s the kicker. The team even has a silly cheer that goes “EAT,” then
“MORE” (it’s kinda hard to write it out). I love that cheer. Every time we
cheer it, I think to myself “Sure, fools, I’ll go ahead and ‘Eat More’… of
your food. Suckers.” And that’s the end of my story.
Barrio
Captains: Jeff Grobe, Grant McCall,
Gretchen Kiehlbaugh, Liz Penny
Bar · ri · o /bahr-ee-oh/ n 1. A Spanish word meaning our community,
territory or neighborhood; a barrio is generally considered to be a cohesive
place rich in tradition and populated by a tight knit minority. 2. The name
of a co-ed Ultimate team originally formed in Tucson’s Barrio Anita; it is a
community of players proud to be representing the minority desert section
at the UPA’s 2007 National Championships. 3. Barrio connotes spirit, love
of the game and never, ever giving up.
Barrio runs a tireless offense honed under the relentless gaze of the
scorching Sonoran sun; rains down one righteous huck after another like
a caped luchador flying across the ring; plays lay-out defense hardened
on parched fields where a blade of grass is the stuff of legend; and
dances with the dead to the immemorial serenades of a mariachi’s violin
to never forget who came before.
Bashing Piñatas
Captains: Ryan West, Lucas Murphy
The modern Piñata (Papyrus animalis) is found in the wild mostly in
the Northeast United States, with pockets of surviving populations in
Colorado, Maryland, and the Carolinas. The fun-loving animals are known
to migrate south to Florida in late October, which is the traditional mating
ground of the species. A specific sub-species, the Papyrus animalis
bashingus, or Bashing Piñata, has adapted to live in a nocturnal
environment, mostly to avoid predators, which to this day is mostly
humans. The wild Piñata first migrated to the United States from Mexico,
where it was often cruelly hung from trees and beaten. This tradition, plus
decades of illegal poaching for their valued tissue paper skins, landed
the Piñata on the Endangered Species list. Although a few success
stories exist, such as the Bashing Piñatas, most Piñatas are still tortured
for the amusement of children and adults across America. This mostly
comes from a lack of knowledge on the part of the American consumer,
which is why this animal cruelty must be brought to the forefront of our
minds. Please, next time you are celebrating a birthday or holiday, avoid
sacrificing such a beautiful creature for your own entertainment.
It’s on like neckbone!! North Carolina has a long history of great teams,
and the Triangle specifically has produced several great coed squads.
We aim to tap into that still existing talent base and bring the coed title
back home to the Triangle, although we might not force middle and have
learned what dump swing means. In our second year, we reorganized with
competitive open tryouts, taking on Olio as our feeder team. The result
was a team that’s 41% married to itself, and 13% Gardner. We’re 100%
Blacker and Mollyer, and 9% of our team sweats more than the other 91%
combined. Aylee and Zach for Callahan 2027. Special thanx to Robbie
Brass Monkey
Captains: Nate Miller, Joshua Greenough,
Hannah Griego
Coach: Henrik Meng (GM)
Brass Monkey has existed since 2003 and been a consistent force in the
Bay Area (and national) mixed since being founded. The team prides
itself on playing gritty defense in any conditions and having a smile while
getting the block. The team spirit is anchored by Nate Miller, Kerry Soo,
Patrick Hard and the original monkeys but as always we are excited by the
new blood for 2007. The stories from past years are retold with gusto and
bonding happens on at the track and on team retreats. We guarantee that
we eat better than any other team in the fall series.
This year has seen a conscious effort to play against some of the best
mixed teams in the country by traveling to Boston, Seattle and then
hosting Mixed Labor Day in San Francisco. The team has had our ups
and downs on the field this season but we are battle tested and like good
Spartans fear no one.
See you on the field or at the beach and we will have a good time with
Chuck and his fiddle.
Chewbacca Defense
Captains: Meetesh Karia, Patrick
Mackie, Mary McDowell, Harper Ray,
Tal Tversky
In 2006, a bunch of Wookiees and Wookettes decided it would be fun
to play together (along with some Ewoks) so Chewbacca Defense was
formed. With players from Doublewide, Buttercup, Showdown, UT and
Payasos con Pistolas, we’re a fun and experienced bunch. Why ‘Chewbacca
Defense’? Why would a Wookiee, an eight-foot tall Wookiee, want to live on
Endor, with a bunch of two-foot tall Ewoks? That does not make sense! If
Chewbacca lives on Endor, you must acquit! The defense rests.
Iowa Corn Exchange
Captains: Rich La Vigne, Dan Kresowik,
Michael Francis
Coach: Ken Gayley
In 2004 playing with Ethanol (men’s open) many of us saw the success
Iowa State men had with CLX. We decided to throw together a team based
in Iowa City with the men from Ethanol (University of Iowa Alum) and
the University of Iowa women (Saucy Nancy) that had just played College
Nationals together to form the team Method. Turns out no practice and
a plentiful supply of Sparks can turn you into the Central Region Mixed
Champions in 2005.
Keeping the dream alive in 2006 under a new name proved a little more
difficult, with many players moving out of state and not being able to
commit to all practices held (read tournaments). We ended the season
with a disappointing Regionals showing losing three games-to-go.
2007 has been a year of dedication. ICE gathered some young talent
from Northwestern University, changed our source of energy (FOUR), and
committed to getting into better shape. And here we are again, Central
Regional Mixed Champions heading to Sarasota.
Mental Toss Flycoons
Captains: Markie Aagenes, Daphne Evans
The Mental Toss Flycoons hail from a relatively small town nestled at the
center of five fabulous valleys. Our town’s neighbor is the Rattlesnake
Wilderness area, which is home to elk, moose, cutthroat trout, grizzly
bears, and the occasional wolf. These vast open spaces and wild lands
are exactly what motivate our team. Many of us make a living working
in these wild places, and the others live in Missoula so we can recreate
there. We spend some time on the Ultimate field but more time on skis,
snowboards, rock faces, trails, or one of the many rivers in our area. All
of these things meld into our name, “The Mental Toss Flycoons,” a quote
from Frank Zappa, who proclaimed he is “moving to Montana soon.”
Though we love visitors, please think twice before moving to our own little
icy wasteland.
MIXED teams
Mischief
Captains: Shirley Wu, Kris McQueen
Coach: Andy Crews
2003: Mischief takes first breath as a Frankenstein comprised of the most
wiley and mischievious players from several Bay Area mixed teams.
2004: After a hemorrhage of players to teams such as Monkey, Fish, and
Kaos, concentrated recruiting efforts for young players bag top prospects
from teams such as Ramona.
2005: Deepening our roster further with additions from Superfly, BLU,
and Squids, Mischief becomes a contender. After learning about heart,
Mischief achieves its goal of qualifying for the Club Championships.
Seeded 15th coming into Nationals, we beat Gorilla Foot and Donkey
Bomb en route to finishing 13th overall. But our first trip to the Club
Championship only whetted our appetite for mischievous greatness.
2006: A few key pickups coupled with a year of hard work and passionate
play brings us to the National Championship. A well-played game,
including star performances from our Finals MVPs, David Pickett
and Lori Eich, gives us the edge as we defeat Slow White 15-11 to
win the Championship.
MIXED teams
Rival
Captains: Michael Wood, Ned Coker,
Holly Sommers
In 2007, Rival has placed 1st or 3rd at every Ultimate tournament it has
attended. The team hopes to see this trend continue at Nationals.
Unfortunately, Rival has not performed as well at other sports. The team
lost the chumpionship of a Tag-Team Scrabble(tm) Tournament for the
third year running (despite great efforts on the part of Rival captains
to, in the immortal words of Jason Kidd, “turn this team around 360
degrees”), was eliminated early in a Charity Sepak Tekraw Exhibition
Against Leukemia, stumbled through a Cold Air Ballooning competition,
finished dead last at a caber toss (but set a world record for injuring
spectators), was disqualified from a 10k power moonwalk, received the
“most improved” award at a synchronized weightlifting event and had
three teammates arrested for their participation (and poor aim) in a biathlon
atop Stone Mountain. To be fair, Rival did see a much improved
performance in the LARP Olympics this year. However, the team fell short
of the points necessary to attain immortality upon the judges ruling that
“sugar britches” is not a virtue.
So, while the year may not have brought all wins for Rival, this team is
striving to end their Ultimate season with a strong showing in Sarasota
and begin their underwater curling season without trepidation in Phoenix
next weekend.
Shazam Returns
Captain: Steve Finn
Sha-Blam!!! Aroused from a year-long hiatus by a piercing, high-pitched
Whistle for help, Captain Marvel rears his head once more to fight injustice.
Hailing from Seattle, WA, Shazam Returns has come back to the
competitive Ultimate scene in a Big way. 26 superheroes have joined
forces to Pounce on evil doers, right wrongs and Dictate the righteous
path. The 26 heroes have Sacrificed much to make it this far and are
intent on seeing this journey through to the end. From the time all 26
were In, Shazam has Focused on playing the game with Intensity and
Spunk. We’re Loud on the sidelines and use our Trust in one another to
boost our Physical and mental faculties, Lifting each other Higher and
taking us to extraordinary places. Our Plucky play gives us a sense of
Ownership over the disc that we absolutely Love. The Prophylaxis against
evil we have acquired throughout the season prevents our Passion for the
game from ever diminishing. So, evil doers beware, for Shazam Returns
to Sarasota. 26 Strong!
ICE Slow White
Captains: Kris Kelly, Mike Miller
Slow White was born July 22nd, 2004, the brainchild of one Stephen
Sullivan. That season we fell short of our goal to qualify for the UPA
Championships, but we saw the great potential that the team could have.
In 2005 we enjoyed a fairytale run at the UPA Championships ending up
finishing sixth, earning a bid to Worlds 2006 in the process. In 2006, with
a retooled roster, we took silver at the UPA Championships and bronze at
WUCC. 2007 saw the losses of two of our biggest playmakers, Princess
Jasper and Teddy Ridiculous, to the new Boston men’s team, “Fortch and
the Firetrucks”. This forced us into retooling mode once again. A strong
recruiting class full of monkeys and wombats has us poised for another
strong run in Sarasota. As always, we love stuff, and we hate quail. Slow
Boston Ultimate
Captains: Fortunat Mueller, Jeff Graham,
Josh McCarthy
Coaches: Ted Munter, Greg Connelly
Boston Ultimate is a men’s Ultimate team hailing from Boston, Mass.
There are two things that Boston Ultimate has never done during its
storied history: lose a UPA Championship Series game or come up with an
interesting team name, and the squad has no plans to start now.
Chain Lightning
Captain: Jonathan Monforti
Atlanta’s Chain Lightning has been a regional power ever since the team’s
inception in 1981, qualifying for the UPA Club Championship 19 of those
27 seasons. The 2007 squad, though, following last year’s Championships
finish, is the first to enter a season with such high expectations. In one of
the best runs versus initial seed the tournament has ever seen, the ‘06
team went from being the 10th seed all the way to the semifinals, the
best Chain showing ever (and the best of any team from the southeast
since 1983).
Capitalizing on that experience has proven a challenge so far this season,
as a sophomore slump of sorts has hit. Despite returning most of last
year’s key players and adding several strong newcomers, including
former Team USA member Josh Ziperstein, this season’s results have
been inconsistent at best. In Sarasota, a late-blooming Chain will look to
recapture some of last October’s end-of-season magic along the way to
showing they have again been underestimated.
Condors
Captains: Jonathan Hester, Rhett
Nichols, Whit Clark
The Santa Barbara Condors Ultimate frisbee team first took the field
in 1974. They didn’t know they were the Condors yet, but with the
leadership of Tom Kennedy (TK) by 1976 they were playing games against
opponents. And in 1977 they became the first National Champions in the
sport. Then they repeated as #1 in 1978 and again in 1981. The Santa
Barbara Condors are the longest running club team with the same name
and background in the world... and their dedication and quality of play
continues to this day. The 1998 and 1999 teams were 2nd in the nation
(the 1999 team was 3rd in the world). In 2000 and 2001 the Condors
were National Champions. The Condors became Club World Champions
in 2002. The 2003 team was 2nd in North America, and in 2004 the
Condors represented the US at the World Championships and won the
silver medal.
Doublewide
Captains: Sean McCall, Max Cook,
Scott Berens
Based in Austin, TX, Doublewide will be attending its 5th UPA Nationals
since forming in 2001. Following a disappointing 2006 club season finish
and a quarterfinal loss in 2006 WFDF Worlds in Perth, Doublewide heads
into 2007 UPA Nationals with a 21-4 record.
Watch for O team players David “Salad” Melancon and Stephen
“Franchise” Presley to shred the field with precision and ease while
defensive stalwarts Michael “Tank” Natenberg and Benjamin “Verbal”
Sims dominate key matchups. Also in the mix the 6’4” rookie Jason
“Soda” Millard and the human trashcan Jay “Jamba” Lane.
Doublewide would like to thank all its friends, fans and sponsors for their
support. Keep it well nasty, hoop!
OPEN TEAMS
Jam
Captain: Idris Nolan
Formed in 1998 with players hailing from all over the San Francisco Bay
Area and beyond, Jam is attending the UPA Club Championships for the
8th time in 10 years. A two-time national finalist (’01, ’04) and five-time
national semifinalist (’00, ’01, ’03, ’04, ’05), Jam has won the Northwest
region three times (’98, ’01, ’07) and the Northern California section six
times (’99, ’00, ’01, ’02, ’03, ’04).
The style of play is blue collar with a splash of jazz. After a year off to try
something new, Jam is back to its roots and retooled for ’07. A couple new
faces have joined the mix and couple old ones have returned. The team
colors are a fresh new blue and gold, but the logo remains the same…
Sutro Tower, the San Francisco landmark is a tv/radio antenna well known
to locals.
Jam comes to 2007 UPA Club Championships as the Northwest regional
champion with a record of 32-9 and one goal in mind… to win the next
game. Better grab an umbrella!
Johnny Bravo
Captain(s): Colin Gottlieb (captain),
Joshua Ackley (captain), Forrest
Collins (Defensive Coordinator), Mitch
Schminke (Offensive Coordinator)
Like a soda being shaken, Bravo looks to finally burn the hay that is ultimate.
New blood mixed with old makes for a delectable treat that is
both tangy and burnt. Is this toasty like substance going to step up and
smother jam all over their hardened crust? A brief history. Bravo was an
accident like many of the players. Like all mistakes it grew until it became
an undeniable waste of money and child support. Many moons later
women’s knees get week from pure fear at the mere chance of glimpsing
the glimmering stag that is Johnny Bravo. Although one still holds
hope, and that one is JV’s dog with those sultry eyes, pouty eyelashes and
supple fur who desires to have a voice just for one day so that she may
sing in a angelic voice the praise and love like desire that she has for this
team. Hermes has put back on the saddles and dusted off the helmet for
he has one more message to deliver and those words, the very words that
shall capture in horrific clarity the heart and imagination of a nation are
“yeah buddy.”
OPEN TEAMS
Machine
Captains: Joe Ferrari, Bill Finn, Tim Halt
Machine 2007 is making the 23rd appearance of a Chicago Open
Elite team at the UPA Club Championships. Windy City, Z, Second
Wind, and Chicago Ultimate have all competed in the UPA Series
representing Chicago. A young crop of recent college grads joined the
team in 2001, and Machine was born. Despite the gear-like logo on
our jerseys, Machine refers to the infamous Chicago political structure,
not to a mechanical or electrical device that performs or assists in the
performance of human tasks.
Pike
Captains: Dan Heckman, J Dono
Pike first surfaced from the murky waters of the Dirtee Jerz back in aught
one with a desire to step above mere colors or concepts. After rearing
their ugly head, gaining experience and fighting the redfish in an epic
battle, Pike went back underwater for a time. A time, perhaps a shade
too long or to a corner too murky, that Pike used to reload their roster with
younger talent and to fill their hearts and minds with bloodlust. Thirst for
competition. A belief that no matter the score, any game is within reach.
And then? A test of that belief. Pike resurfaces to the national stage,
brimming with confidence and ready for battle. Ugly head and all, Pike
is out to destroy.
Rhino
Captain: Paterson Seaton
The best Ultimate players from Oregon’s Willamette Valley, Rhino are
something of an enigma. There’s an intriguing mix of old and young,
employed and not, portly and lean, Ducks and Beavers. The name,
minus the Slam, returned a few seasons back, revived from the pioneers
of hard-running, good-time Northwest Ultimate. That energy is alive,
along with a do-it-yourself ethic which the team knows can be both
frustrating and inspiring.
Individually and collectively, Rhino often do things their own way.
Sometimes it works (2006 quarterfinalists), other times, not so much (ECC
2007). Regardless, Rhino continue to move forward with their organized
chaos. Matching numbered shorts? Not yet. Track workouts? Sometimes.
On-time arrival? Depends. Color coordination? Not really. Practice space?
Please. Of course, none of this matters, because when a bunch of freaks
come together and get after it on the field, and when those freaks are from
Oregon, good things can happen. So here Rhino are again, returning to
the Championships. Indeed.
Ring of Fire
Captains: Tully Beatty, Jared Inselman,
Dave Snoke
Ring of Fire has had a storied history in high level Ultimate reaching back
to its first year in 1989. Tempered in the fires of North Carolina summer,
this year’s squad is once again ready to compete with the best of the
best. Ring lost half of it’s 26-man roster from the 2006 campaign,
including franchise player Augie Kreivenas. Also gone are Ray Parrish,
Paul Klenk, Jon Boling, and Ultimate history book cover boy Mick Ribault.
However, two former members of Ring have returned and six new faces
have been added. As always, Ring has pulled talent from the area’s
college teams and they’ve also added former Floridian Stephen Poulos
to top the roster at 21. Dave Snoke and Jared Inselmann have put down
their in-state collegiate rivalry to co-captain this season’s squad along
with veteran player Tully Beatty. Getting back to the basics and cutting
no corners, this year’s team has taken all strides to continue building
upon the Ring Nation.
Sockeye
Captains: Mike Caldwell, Sam Chatterton-
Kirchmeier, Roger Crafts, Will Henry
The yearly salmon run is a trek, not a sprint.
The Seattle Sockeye is one of the longest-represented clubs in America. A
string of 3 straight UPA finals appearances in the mid-90s were followed
by the dark years, during which longtime members of the team were
forced to dig in and struggle. In the early part of this decade, however,
Sockeye began to surge back to the top on the strength of team defense
and the love of our Fish brothers, winning the UPA Championships for the
first time in 2004, and doing so again in 2006.
Led by a quartet of captains (Mike Caldwell, Sam C-K, Roger Crafts and
Will Henry) the 2007 Sockeye came together to win Solstice and ECC.
This team trains together and plays together, inspiring each other to leap
one more hurdle every day. Sockeye’s variant of the horizontal offense
meshes rapid timing with aggressive cutting. This partners a pressure
man-to-man defensive system well.
Sockeye is proud of our NW roots, and we benefit from strong relationships
with Patagonia, ClifBar, Georgetown Brewing, DiscNW, the Seattle
Ultimate community, and Voodoo. We’d like to give special thanks to the
alumni, parents and family members that help support our run. When you
see a Fish with a crazy grin or a writhing mass of 24-strong mobbing each
other after a big block, please know that you are a part of our team, and
that we couldn’t do it without you. Upstream!
Sub Zero
Captains: Dave Truesdale, Charlie
Reznikoff, Andrew Brown, Andy Dikeman
This year marks the tenth straight year that Minneapolis Sub Zero will be
competing at the UPA Club Championships. Gone are many of the familiar
faces who helped Sub Zero become the successful team it is today, but
new faces aim to propel the team to new heights. Drawing the best talent
from schools in Minnesota and as far away as Madison, Sub Zero has
put together a very strong team. An offense anchored by several of the
usual suspects has been bolstered this year by some of the best that
the college game has to offer. Defensively Zero is teeming with athletes
and the vets speculate that this year’s D team is the best we’ve ever
unleashed at the Club Championships. Sub Zero 2007 is poised to bring
the blizzard this weekend in Sarasota. Don’t forget to bring your shovel
when you get snowed in.
Truck Stop
Captains: Sean McComb, Ryan Morgan
Truck Stop is making its second consecutive trip to the Club
Championships. We’ve come a long way in our 3 years of existence, going
from a team of college players from the college regional powerhouse that
is the Metro East to a team of athletic players filled out with the elite
experience of former members of e-Pig and Potomac. We came to the
Club Championships last year as one of those “just happy to be here”
teams and left unsatisfied. This season focused on going to more elite
tournaments than in years past and has resulted in a stronger, more
confident team in order to show up and perform on a much higher level
than last year.
The Van Buren Boys
The Van Buren Boys are a first year team based out
of Ames, Iowa. Players on the team come from Ames
and surrounding areas, Minneapolis, Kansas City,
Fayetteville, and Boston. A number of players on the
team formerly played on The Chad Larson Experience, or were plucked
from rival coed teams. Our roster was filled out by other Iowa State alumni
and University of Kansas alumni.
The team did not experience a lot of success this year, finishing sixth at
the Boston Invite, eighth at Chicago Heavyweights, and no tournament
victories elsewhere. The Van Buren Boys were West Plains Sectional
champions, went into central Regionals seeded sixth, and took the third
bid to UPA Club Open Nationals.
We would like to thank all those who have bolstered our sidelines this
year, including members of Small Rackages, Dingwop, Liquid Assets,
‘Tussin, and ISUC. We would like to thank our family and friends for their
constant support. We would like to thank all those who helped fill out
practice numbers including Misra, Kurt, Torin, Dunlay, Greg, Keiser, Kevin,
Shoe, Michael, Chuck, Tim, Jim, Jeff, Scott, Drew, Crotty, 808, and anyone
WOMEN’S TEAMS
Ambush
Captains: Alison Kling, Becca Tucker
Ambush very nearly did not exist this year.
There was talk of an all-star women’s team that would
combine the best of Ambush with women from area coed
teams and out-of-towners from New Jersey and Connecticut. This team
was supposed to “change the face of women’s Ultimate in New York.”
Read: it would make the Club Championships, a feat that Ambush had
not accomplished since its glory days ended in 2001.
That team fell through, setting off a frenzy of recruitment (begging)
and planning (cursing) as Ambush reassembled. In retrospect, it was a
blessing. When we brushed ourselves off we saw Ambush did not need
a facelift. At our tryout tournament, Boston Invite, we went undefeated,
beating Wicked and Scandal. We got so high off all that winning that
we took every tryout, giving us a giant 27-woman roster (which would,
in typical New York fashion, whittle itself down to the 16 who are here
in Sarasota).
Our tenth “Hamilton” season has been catch as catch can from first to
last. We’ve played 55 games, many of them nearly savage. We brought six
women to No Borders in Ottawa, where we picked up four Canadians. The
eleven we took to Colorado Cup arrived at 4 a.m. Saturday, partied ‘til the
same time Sunday, and still posted a win over Nemesis Sunday morning
before collapsing in the hysterical laughter of exhaustion.
The Club Championships? You could knock us over with a mini disc. We’re
first-timers at the dance, and we’re giddy as a girl scout.
Backhoe
Captains: Frannie Goodrich, Lindsey
Hack, Beth Stagner
Coach: Brian Dobyns
After a less than desirable end to the 2006 season, Backhoe returned for
the 2007 season with a 45% roster turnover. What did remain of the team
that had been to the finals in 2005 were 13 women and our coach Brian
Dobyns, ready to get up and fight again. Tryouts in May were popular,
demonstrating one of the largest tryout classes ever on record. From that
large class, we added six more playas to our roster….and the rest is
history. The 2007 season brought us the Boston Invite (Tryouts), WCC,
ECC, Chesapeake Open, and the series. Currently, we are 34-7 with 4
tournament championships and we are moving full force ahead.
“They say a family that plays together, stays together.
And one that walks apart just falls apart.
19, together we stand, divided we fall.
United, we form Backhoe and take on all. Let’s move.
Best of the best is what we strive to be. Yeah.
A legacy is what we trying to leave.
Blood, sweat, tears, yeah.
We dripped all three just to get here.”
Box
Captains: Leah Ledenbach, Jamie
Anderson and Jane Zelikova
In hopes of confusing the US Immigration Service, we shortened our
name to Box to avoid deportation – but it didn’t work. People still call
us Sack Lunch AND they carted off one of our own. We may be conspiracy
theorists, but there is also reason to believe the government may have
contaminated our water supply with fertility drugs which resulted in the
conception of two new baby boxers who will make their way on to the
Ultimate field in 2008. I don’t think Big Brother realizes that this only
bolsters the numbers for our faceless army. Box has faced its share of
challenges and met with adversity since day one. The haters can hate,
but ballers gotta ball. Nothing is gonna stop a team armed with a lifetime
supply of GU and pepper spray from achieving great things. Bring It!
- “you’re forgetting that momma has the added advantage that she can
other divine methods of action. these include plagues, transformation
of earthly elements, molting of the mind-body, and meditation on fists
- “you think my marriage would come before fantasy fist fight. you have
underestimated me.”
- “it may be gritty, heart-wrenching, and inappropriate, but i do not take
NO for an answer. and they tell me this works better in fighting than
it does with guys.”
- “mostly, i use my powers for good. for example, i save countless lithium
ion batteries from early death by regulating their charge cycles and can
often revive even the most dead of batteries by charging them gently.”
- “first, i glue them down, so that, wriggle as they might, they can’t
escape. then i slowly cut their skin open, all the way down the length
of their small bodies. when the guts start spilling out, i grab them
and pull. and pull. until they have no more internal organs left. then
i stretch their skin out like the hide of an animal. and if that weren’t
enough, i proceed to torture them by sticking small needles in their
brains and muscles, and zapping them with electricity.”
Captains: Alison Flynn, Alyson Walker,
Sheri Madigan
Capitals Ultimate began in August 2005 after the top two Canadian
Women’s Ultimate teams planned to compete to qualify for UPA
Championships. Top players from Ottawa and Toronto were selected to
take part in this short two-month season. After two tournaments, the
Capitals qualified for the championships – entering the competition
ranked 16th. Three days of fierce playing from the Capitals shocked the
crowds as the team jumped from 16th to finish in 6th place.
The Capitals re-formed in 2006 to once again qualify for the UPA
Championships. After fighting through strong competition at regionals,
the team qualified for the UPA Championships. Another top-ten finish
was registered in Sarasota with the Capitals taking 7th.
The Capitals decided to compete together for both the 2007 Canadian
summer season and the UPAClub Series.
Lady Godiva
Captains: Christina Cianfrani, Sarah
Cook, Dominique Fontenette, Maureen
McCamley, Liz Middleton
Tenacious and stingy team defense, a highly efficient offense, and
an unparalleled focus on strong fundamentals define Boston’s Lady
Godiva. Our goals are simple—striving to be the best while raising
the level of play every time we step out onto the field. There are no
superstars, just a well-oiled super team of highly dedicated athletes
who love to play the game.
Since the team’s inception in 1987, Godiva continues to be an elite
women’s Ultimate frisbee team. We have made it to the semi-finals or
better at the U.S. National Championship Tournament 18 times. With 9
U.S. national titles and a gold medal at the 1998 World Championship,
Lady Godiva is the most successful team (men’s or women’s) in the
history of Ultimate.
EXTREME PLAY ALERT: HURRICANE LAYUMA BLOWING THROUGH!
2006 SEASON: Tropical Depression left in the wake of dominant FL
women’s teams. Tropical Storm LaYuma developed as the first captains
start recruiting and the team starts forming. By Regionals 2006 the storm
had become Hurricane LaYuma, blowing through and taking a bid to the
Club Championship in its first year of existence. LaYuma grows from
its experiences in Sarasota and leaves hungry for more. 2007 SEASON:
In 2007 LaYuma was building in strength and intensity as it swept up
more talent across the state of FL.. As a Category 1 hurricane, LaYuma
caused some teams to run for cover at tournaments across the U.S. and
continued speeding up after many hot, wet practices. Hurricane LaYuma
was upgraded to a Category 3 storm, flooding South Regionals with sick
plays and tight Ds. “The wetter the better” was true for the LaYuma
storm advancing to the Club Championship. ***HURRICANE WARNING
IN EFFECT FOR UPA CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS 2007*** Hurricane LaYuma
becomes a Cat 5 storm, set to make landfall on Thursday, October 25th
in Sarasota, FL. You’ll recognize the jerseys that made waves last year.
Expect extreme plays, intense D, and hot layouts in the outer bands, with
a chilly calm O in the eye of the storm. LAYUMA ULTIMATE, YOU GOT TO
LOVE THE SOUND OF IT.
WOMEN’S TEAMS
Loose Cannon
Captain: Erin Crider
Loose Cannon’s rookie season has been a roller coaster of dazzling
successes and disappointing losses. We began as a typical recent
graduate’s Ultimate pipe dream - a team of girls who played with (and
against) each other in college. Unfortunately, most of us were, and are,
scattered far and wide across the country, some thrown even as far as
Boulder, Boston, and Georgia. In the end it was largely thanks to the
charisma, charm, and shady connections of our captain, Erin Crider, that
we finally managed to make a list of girls who were ready to form a team.
Now, we are a versatile roster of aggressive handlers and smart cutters,
running on a philosophy of constant innovation and clear communication.
We play hard and party harder, and boast an undefeated boat race record
and a 33-8 season.
MOJO
Captains: Keely Dinse, Amy Young,
Sarah Zistler
MOJO was borne out of a karaoke love-fest at Captain Kurt’s at Club
Nationals in 2004 between Clutch (Michigan) and Collide (Ohio). At first,
there were some furtive glances, and shy smiles shared through the
microphone stands. But, by the bottom of our 12th shot, we were bumping
and grinding. MOJO (Michigan-Ohio Joint Operation) was conceived that
night.
In 2007, we’ve competed and trained as a team to earn our third straight
bid to Club Nationals with victories over the likes of Small Rackages,
Lady Godiva, Wicked, Loose Cannon, and Ambush along the way. Our
e-plays, virtual practices, and team fitness challenge have brought us
all together. The 2007 squad sees the return of key veterans, fresh FAST
talent, hot mamas, new eye candy, cancer quitters, movers & shakers,
and more damn good ultimate players.
Watch out for us on the field, we’re going to surprise you. Then come over
to Captain Kurt’s; it’s our anniversary!
Ozone
Captains: Julia Echterhoff, Katherine
Wooten, Sandra Davis, Sara Gravelin,
Maggie Jackson
Ozone is one of the longest running women’s teams in the country and has
a record of excellence matched by few. In 2006, Ozone was the only U.S.
women’s team to compete at the WFDF World Championships in Perth,
Australia, and we finished 4th overall. Since returning from Down Under
we are poised, as always, to fight for the top spot in Sarasota and give
every team our best game.
After saying goodbye to some good friends last year, we got the opportunity
to bring some new faces into the fold. We recruited some local college
stars and picked up the best Atlanta standouts around. Then we bribed a
couple of ringers to move to town and our roster was ready to go.
In 2007 we’ve done our best to represent Atlanta wherever we go. We’ve
got better costumes than Elton. Our beverage of choice is always Coca-
Cola. We’ve rediscovered our youth and we’ve been playing great ever
since. We are so proud to represent the South this year, and cannot wait
to play! Team before self. Simplify and amplify.
Riot
Captains: Miranda Roth, Liz Duffy,
Kari DeLeeuw
Inspired by the mayhem of the 1999 WTO riots in Seattle, Riot formed in
2000 as a combination of former Vergin’s and fresh local talent. Since
that first year, Riot has been a dominant force in the highly competitve
Northwest region and has made their mark on both the national and
world stage, winning Worlds in 2002. In 2004, Riot finally brought home
a national UPA title to the Seattle women, and then in 2005, they won the
Club Championship again! After a strong 2nd place finish in 2006 and 7
successful seasons, many original Riots went on to pursue non-ultimate
activities, while a handful of veterans came into 2007 excited to see what
new talent would come their way. This season, 14 amazing, energetic,
and fun new teammates joined the Riot returners, bringing with them
intensity, heart, and more of the high level play that Riot is known for. Riot
2007 is very excited to be back in Sarasota!
Safari
Captain: Shar Stuht
The Pride returns to stalk the savanna. Once more this clan of lionesses
must battle for control of the hunting grounds. Female-dominated
territories are the most hard-won and defended. In response, the might
of each solitary huntress unites in order to kill all opposition in the quest
for rule of the land.
This hunting season a few recluses have brought additional power to
the Pride. These new members joined the tribe and strengthened the
lines…the weaker ones were devoured in a glorious feast. The leader
has increased her force and all are gaining speed, agility, and power with
every hunt.
Hungry is our vision, mighty is our depth. Prepared to fight to the death,
the queens of the Safari pounce into the clash for the crown.
With Amy, R. Sheldahl, and me - Rach D.
The unBeastie version really did begin with three of us on the first women’s
Ultimate team at Iowa State University, Woman Scorned. From there, we
played with The Chad Larson Experience, picking up more women cut from
the same cloth- a lot of style, a little sass (the spunky kind, not the witchy
kind), and a passion too deep to be ended by various medical schooling,
out-of-state moves, or little injuries like ligament tears or concussions.
Having played with some of those CLX boys from the time I started
Ultimate, we decided to part ways this year, forming The Van Buren Boys
and Small Rackages. We made a few fortuitous additions with the timely
(for us) break up of Bait & a few more with our attractive reputation of
being the most fun (and winningest) team to play with in the tri-state
area (MO, MN, and IA). We are looking forward to truly making this the
Rackage Nation, with plans to extend into Canada already begun.
Zeitgeist
Captains: Kath Ratcliff, Krista McDonald,
Kelley Bagby
Coach: Alex ‘Dutchy’ Ghesquiere
The potential had been clear for a while, yet we all patiently awaited the
zeitgeist. At the onset of this year, 2007, it finally arose, calling for us
to let go what held us to the past, be it the comfort of an old team, or
the wariness of old rivals. A NewTeam was created, one that would aim
to revolutionize Bay Area women’s Ultimate, the Northwest region, and
now the nation. But the zeitgeist wisely demanded more than just the
uniting of talent; the zeitgeist demanded a unity based on camaraderie,
dedication, and unconditional belief. And thus, in the spirit of the times,
Zeitgeist came to be.
By regionals, this new Zeitgeist fully emerged, and it was that of
a different kind. We didn’t have to act on it; we could just be it. Each
member of the team brought their own addition to the revolution. We
found ourselves standing under each others umbrellas, in timberlove t-
shirts, eating orange slices, and listening to nothing but a capella. Most
significantly, we found that we all shared a drive to play for every inch,
and to persistently nuzzle each other to do so. It is this, the depth of our
geist, and the strength of our nuzzles, which makes us the force we have
become, and will continue to be.
