Why Study English Literature?
♦
♦
♦
♦
English Literature is a well-established, popular A Level course
at Penweddig. Results have been consistently good over the
years with several pupils from Penweddig going on to study
English Literature at university, including Oxford and
Cambridge.
This is the subject for you, if you enjoy reading and value
independent thought. Whilst we consider the traditional
critical views, the emphasis is always on the pupil’s own
individual response.
It is a highly disciplined, academic subject and a degree or A
Level in English Literature is seen as qualification of note.
Employers like people who can think clearly and take the
initiative; the study of English Literature helps to prepare you
for any career where sensitive thought and good
communication skills are valued.
Possible Future Areas for Study
♦
♦
As an established , academic subject nearly every university
in Britain offers a course in English Literature; we try to
prepare you for this range of courses by offering a taste of
everything – feminist literature; modern poetry (Yeats and
Eliot); Chaucer; Shakespeare; literature in translation and
literature in context. We even cover creative writing in the
internal assessment.
Whatever you chose to do, a qualification in English Literature
will give you confidence in your opinions and vouch for your
communication skills in the English language.
