Opportunity for city to bask in<br />
Olympic Torch glory<br />
THE Olympic Flame is coming<br />
to <str<strong>on</strong>g>Stoke</str<strong>on</strong>g>-<strong>on</strong>-<strong>Trent</strong>. Following<br />
extensive nati<strong>on</strong>al<br />
c<strong>on</strong>sultati<strong>on</strong>, the city has just been<br />
named as a successful locati<strong>on</strong> to<br />
become a “Host Community for the<br />
L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong> 2012 Olympic Torch Relay”<br />
and will take part in the build up to<br />
next year’s Games.<br />
John van de Laarschot, the city council’s<br />
Chief Executive, said: “This is fantastic news<br />
for <str<strong>on</strong>g>Stoke</str<strong>on</strong>g>-<strong>on</strong>-<strong>Trent</strong> and a w<strong>on</strong>derful<br />
opportunity for us to shine as the eyes of the<br />
world look <strong>on</strong>.”<br />
<strong>City</strong> council Leader <strong>Council</strong>lor<br />
Mohammed Pervez said: “I am delighted we<br />
are hosting the Torch Relay it is a <strong>on</strong>ce in a<br />
lifetime opportunity to take part in such an<br />
historic event.”<br />
The Torch arrives in the city <strong>on</strong> Wednesday,<br />
30 May 2012 and will be paraded by a team<br />
of yet-to-be chosen Torchbearers, who will<br />
carry it for at least 300 metres each.<br />
It will also form the centrepiece of a<br />
spectacular, free, two-hour evening show<br />
designed to inspire a new generati<strong>on</strong> of young<br />
people to embrace the Games while fostering<br />
the Olympic values of respect, excellence and<br />
friendship.<br />
Community c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong><br />
A team of up to 350 crew will accompany<br />
the Torch <strong>on</strong> behalf of official Torch Relay<br />
partners Coca Cola, Lloyds TSB and<br />
Samsung. It is due to spend the night in The<br />
Potteries before moving <strong>on</strong> to its next<br />
locati<strong>on</strong>.<br />
More details <strong>on</strong> the route will emerge in<br />
the coming m<strong>on</strong>ths but nominati<strong>on</strong>s are<br />
already being taken for the privilege of<br />
becoming a local Torchbearer.<br />
Nominees will have to be aged 12 or<br />
over and must dem<strong>on</strong>strate that they have<br />
achieved their pers<strong>on</strong>al best in making a<br />
c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong> to their community. The<br />
Games’ organising committee has pledged<br />
to make sure half of those chosen are aged 12<br />
to 24.<br />
Eight thousand people are due to carry the<br />
Olympic Torch around the UK in a 70-day<br />
celebrati<strong>on</strong> before it heads to L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> 21<br />
July ahead of the Games’ Opening Cerem<strong>on</strong>y<br />
<strong>on</strong> 27 July.<br />

CARMOUNTSIDE:<br />
Resurfacing work has been<br />

between Woodhead Road and<br />
Carmountside Crematorium.<br />

the public and judged by a<br />

SANDYFORD: The Earl of<br />
Wessex was given a guided<br />
tour of a state-of-the-art<br />
community fire stati<strong>on</strong> before<br />
officially opening the building.<br />
He met pupils from local<br />
schools, residents’ associati<strong>on</strong>s<br />
and a group who use the<br />
stati<strong>on</strong>’s gym every week.<br />
Speaking as he unveiled a<br />
plaque, Prince Edward said: “I’ve<br />
been to a number of fire<br />
stati<strong>on</strong>s, but nothing quite like<br />
