THOUSANDS of<br />
visitors are set to<br />
flock to the city when<br />
two top nati<strong>on</strong>al and<br />
internati<strong>on</strong>al cycling events<br />
return.<br />
Some of the UK’s best cyclists<br />
will take to the streets of<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>Stoke</str<strong>on</strong>g>-<strong>on</strong>-<strong>Trent</strong> when the<br />
Halford’s Tour Series takes place<br />
for the third year running in June.<br />
And in September, 100 of the<br />
world’s top riders will take part in<br />
the local stage of the Tour of<br />
Britain, <strong>on</strong>ce again putting the<br />
city <strong>on</strong> the global sporting map.<br />

which is televised <strong>on</strong> ITV4, will<br />

see 10 teams of five cyclists battle<br />
it out over eight stages to see who<br />
is the overall team winner.<br />
The riders arrive in<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>Stoke</str<strong>on</strong>g>-<strong>on</strong>-<strong>Trent</strong> <strong>on</strong> Thursday 7<br />
June and the city will also host a<br />
stage of the Johns<strong>on</strong>'s Health<br />
Tech Women's Grand Prix series,<br />
a race for top-class female cyclists<br />
including local team Horiz<strong>on</strong><br />
Fitness Racing, who boast World<br />
Champi<strong>on</strong>s Dani King and<br />
Joanne Rowsell <strong>on</strong> their roster.<br />
A whole host of activities and<br />
entertainment has been planned<br />
for the day, with events taking<br />
place from 8am in the city centre.<br />
There will be some diversi<strong>on</strong>s in<br />
place <strong>on</strong> certain roads but the<br />
city will be accessible all day l<strong>on</strong>g.<br />
Lord Mayor Denver Tolley said:<br />
“We are delighted that we are<br />
hosting both these top class<br />
cycling events. The past two years<br />
has seen thousands of people<br />
packed in the city centre watching<br />
fantastic athletes battle it out.<br />
Thrilling c<strong>on</strong>cept<br />
“This event is also <strong>on</strong> ITV and<br />
puts <str<strong>on</strong>g>Stoke</str<strong>on</strong>g>-<strong>on</strong>-<strong>Trent</strong> <strong>on</strong> the map.<br />
I know there are also rides for<br />
school children and veterans<br />
being planned and all sorts of<br />
entertainment throughout the<br />
day. It will be a good day for the<br />
city.”<br />
In the men’s race St<strong>on</strong>e-based<br />
team Motorpoint will be <strong>on</strong>e of<br />
the favourites, after their victory<br />
in the city last year, when over<br />
10,000 people turned out to<br />
watch.<br />
Race director Mick Bennett<br />
said: “The Halfords Tour Series is<br />
a unique and thrilling c<strong>on</strong>cept.<br />
We are looking forward to coming<br />
to <str<strong>on</strong>g>Stoke</str<strong>on</strong>g>-<strong>on</strong>-<strong>Trent</strong>.”<br />

Meanwhile the Tour of Britain<br />
cycling race will see the cream of<br />
the world’s cyclists taking part in<br />
a gruelling 150 kilometre stage <strong>on</strong><br />
13 September, which starts at<br />
<strong>Trent</strong>ham Gardens and finishes<br />
in the <strong>City</strong> Centre. It is the fourth<br />
year running that the city has<br />
hosted a stage of the race, which<br />
receives global TV coverage.<br />
Amateur cyclists will <strong>on</strong>ce<br />
again have the opportunity to<br />
take <strong>on</strong> the challenge of the<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>Stoke</str<strong>on</strong>g>-<strong>on</strong>-<strong>Trent</strong> stage and raise<br />
m<strong>on</strong>ey for The Prostate Cancer<br />
Charity a week after The Tour<br />
comes to town.<br />
The Charity Tour Ride takes<br />
place <strong>on</strong> Sunday 25 September<br />
and gives cyclists from the UK<br />
the chance to take <strong>on</strong> the<br />
challenge of comparing<br />
themselves against the<br />
professi<strong>on</strong>als.<br />

Neighbourhoods<br />
NORMACOT: Queensberry<br />
Youth Centre has reopened<br />
after a £53,500 re-vamp<br />
incorporating design<br />
suggesti<strong>on</strong>s from young<br />
people in the area. Four<br />
themed rooms are based<br />
around space, nightclub, beach<br />
and graffiti. New facilities<br />
include a pool room, flat screen<br />
televisi<strong>on</strong>s and an IT suite. The<br />
council’s Capital Investment<br />
Programme c<strong>on</strong>tributed<br />
£32,500 to the scheme.<br />
Increased opening times now<br />
include Fridays and Saturdays.<br />
TRENTHAM: Doorstep crime<br />
is being tackled with the<br />
launch of another No Cold<br />
Calling Z<strong>on</strong>e. Warning signs<br />
have been put up in Eastwick<br />
Crescent, Werburgh Drive,<br />
Bainbridge Road, Delamere<br />
Grove, Wessex Drive and<br />
Craven Close. Residents have<br />
also been supplied with<br />
informati<strong>on</strong> packs as well as<br />
door and window stickers. It<br />
comes after several reported<br />
incidents in the area.<br />
SNEYD GREEN: Another<br />
Respect Week has been staged<br />
to target issues like antisocial<br />
behaviour, litter and fly tipping.<br />
Activities centred around the<br />
Community Centre in Ralph<br />
Drive and the church hall in<br />
Noblett Road included free<br />
dance sessi<strong>on</strong>s, life-style health<br />
checks, a community speed<br />
watch initiative to tackle<br />
speeding motorists and a<br />
tidy-up of the area by<br />
Community Payback teams.<br />

NORTHWOOD AND<br />
HANLEY: Two CCTV cameras<br />
are now operating <strong>on</strong> Upper<br />
Huntbach Street and in<br />
Havelock Place to m<strong>on</strong>itor<br />
antisocial behaviour. One<br />
covers the area around Hanley<br />
Jobcentre Plus where an<br />
alcohol restricti<strong>on</strong> z<strong>on</strong>e is also<br />
in operati<strong>on</strong>. Police say both<br />
cameras are already having a<br />
beneficial effect.<br />
TRENT VALE: Essential repairs<br />
have been carried out over<br />
three weeks <strong>on</strong> footpaths in<br />
St.John’s Avenue.Badly aligned<br />
and damaged kerbing was<br />
renewed during the work.<br />
Access for residents was<br />
maintained throughout the<br />
extensive renovati<strong>on</strong>s.
