the digitisation process
the complex process of digitisation involves painstaking and
time-consuming work before completed discover Collections
are ready to go live. this includes selection and research,
preservation treatment, photography and developing the online
presence of the collection.
throughout the year, significant material has been added to the
existing discover Collections stories and new online collections
have been created. digitisation of additional collection material
has also provided greater access through the Library’s
catalogue.
Selection and research
Preservation
Curators and librarians identify and research selected
topics. Material is selected for its relevance, uniqueness
and historic importance.
if necessary, original material undergoes preservation
treatment including repairs, rehousing and cleaning.
Photography
Online
after preservation assessment, the books, paintings,
photographs or objects are taken to the digitisation lab for
photography. depending on the size, shape and format
of the material, it is photographed or scanned to produce
high resolution digital images.
the online stories are presented by web development
specialists. images are displayed in various formats,
such as page-turning albums and interactive image
viewers, and are linked to the Library’s catalogue.
