Chairman’s report i wish to sincerely thank all supporters and benefactors of the State Library of nSW Foundation for their continued loyalty and valued patronage. Your generous donations have provided significant grants to the Library for digitisation, conservation, acquisitions and fellowships. the 2008/09 year has been an eventful one. Like many other sectors, the global financial crisis has impacted on the Foundation’s financial investments. While i am pleased to report that our conservative investment strategy in t Corp has recorded a positive return, nevertheless our ability to assist the Library has been significantly reduced. the Foundation’s impressive digitisation strategy, initiated in 2004, continues to grow. to date around 400,000 digital images have been created with links to several hundred thousand more pages. the Library now boasts 23 major discover Collections online stories supported by over 30 partners. the latest exciting addition to discover Collections, Botanica: Illustrating the Exotic, was launched in april 2009. it features exquisite digitised botanical works from the Library’s rare book collections of the 18th and early 19th centuries. new material has enriched and added vibrancy to existing discover Collections stories, including several unique indigenous vocabularies (Indigenous Australians); journals of astronomer William Wales and First Lieutenant James Burney (Voyages of Discovery); rare material from the Francis Greenway collection (The Macquarie Era); Frank Hurley’s dramatic photographs and the journal of the loss of the Endurance (Hurley’s Antarctica); and over 60 Sydney theatre scene photographs (Sydney Exposed). the discover Collections program received an outstanding accolade in august 2008 for its online initiative. a prestigious australian Business arts Foundation (abaF) Marsh Partnering award for nSW acknowledged the collaborative partnership of Rio tinto and the Library. the online discover Collections story Indigenous Australians showcases the Library’s extensive collection of the historical records of the language, art and culture of the aboriginal peoples of australia. the Foundation is playing a key role in supporting the Library’s strategic initiatives and this has been enhanced by the energy and commitment of the Foundation Board members — Elsa atkins, ian Smith and Regina Sutton — and members of the Capital Campaign Committee — Paul Murnane (Chair), Graham Bradley aM, Peter Crossing, Belinda Hutchinson aM, Christine Liddy ao, Samantha Meers and Stephen Menzies. i would especially like to thank Foundation staff Kay Payne and Helen Clark for their ongoing dedication and support. Many of you will be aware of our plans to reinvigorate the Foundation under our new Executive director, Susan Hunt. over the next year, we will be offering exciting new initiatives as we move towards 2010 and will provide greater opportunities to engage with our supporters. i look forward to the Foundation building from strength to strength in the forthcoming year. Rob Thomas Chairman State Library of new South Wales Foundation Board an exciting new project to digitise the Holtermann Collection’s 3,500 glass plate negatives is now well underway, with the overwhelming support of more than 60 benefactors. a blog on the State Library website charting the project’s progress has attracted great interest.
