Hurley’s Antarctica (sponsored by the Graham and
Charlene Bradley Foundation) was enhanced by the
addition of the story of the loss of the Endurance during
Shackleton’s British imperial trans-antarctic Expedition
between 1914 and 1917. Photographer Frank Hurley’s
dramatic photographs of the disaster, along with his
journal, have recently been digitised.
the French in Australia online collection, sponsored
by accor, was expanded with the addition of a story
about the ill-fated explorer La Pérouse. the mysterious
disappearance of the expedition in 1788 is told through
manuscript, pictorial and published items.

From Terra Australis to Australia (sponsored by the thyne
Reid Foundation and John t Reid Charitable trusts) was
the flagship feature at the official launch of the Library’s
new website in July 2008. our unrivalled collection of First
Fleet material, including nine of the 11 known First Fleet
journals as well as letters and pictorial material, was made
available online for the first time. the launch event was well
attended and featured a reading from one of the First Fleet
journals by actor Jack thompson.
an addition to Religion, Church & Missions in Australia
(sponsored by the Vincent Fairfax Family Foundation) was
the story of the Sunday School movement’s beginnings in
australia. the story is told through the papers of Reverend
thomas Hassall, who established the first Sunday School
in Parramatta in 1813. in addition, several of our most
beautiful medieval illuminated manuscripts have been
added to Religion, Church & Missions, representing part
of the western religious tradition brought to australia with
European settlement.
