Hurley’s Antarctica (sponsored by the Graham and<br />
Charlene Bradley <strong>Foundation</strong>) was enhanced by the<br />
addition <strong>of</strong> the story <strong>of</strong> the loss <strong>of</strong> the Endurance during<br />
Shackleton’s British imperial trans-antarctic Expedition<br />
between 1914 and 1917. Photographer Frank Hurley’s<br />
dramatic photographs <strong>of</strong> the disaster, along with his<br />
journal, have recently been digitised.<br />
the French in Australia online collection, sponsored<br />
by accor, was expanded with the addition <strong>of</strong> a story<br />
about the ill-fated explorer La Pérouse. the mysterious<br />
disappearance <strong>of</strong> the expedition in 1788 is told through<br />
manuscript, pictorial and published items.<br />

From Terra Australis to Australia (sponsored by the thyne<br />
Reid <strong>Foundation</strong> and John t Reid Charitable trusts) was<br />
the flagship feature at the <strong>of</strong>ficial launch <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Library</strong>’s<br />
new website in July <strong>2008</strong>. our unrivalled collection <strong>of</strong> First<br />
Fleet material, including nine <strong>of</strong> the 11 known First Fleet<br />
journals as well as letters and pictorial material, was made<br />
available online for the first time. the launch event was well<br />
attended and featured a reading from one <strong>of</strong> the First Fleet<br />
journals by actor Jack thompson.<br />
an addition to Religion, Church & Missions in Australia<br />
(sponsored by the Vincent Fairfax Family <strong>Foundation</strong>) was<br />
the story <strong>of</strong> the Sunday School movement’s beginnings in<br />
australia. the story is told through the papers <strong>of</strong> Reverend<br />
thomas Hassall, who established the first Sunday School<br />
in Parramatta in 1813. in addition, several <strong>of</strong> our most<br />
beautiful medieval illuminated manuscripts have been<br />
added to Religion, Church & Missions, representing part<br />
<strong>of</strong> the western religious tradition brought to australia with<br />
European settlement.<br />
