Curatorial talks<br />

throughout the year, the <strong>Foundation</strong> conducted exclusive<br />

viewings for <strong>Library</strong> supporters. these events are wonderful<br />

occasions for the <strong>Library</strong> to showcase collection treasures<br />

and display original material too fragile for general exhibition.<br />

our curators and librarians have the opportunity to share their<br />

expertise with enthusiastic <strong>Foundation</strong> supporters.<br />

in <strong>2008</strong>/<strong>09</strong>, these events covered a wide range <strong>of</strong> topics:<br />

• the work <strong>of</strong> famous 16th and 17th century cartographers —<br />

including ortelius, Mercator, Jansson and Blaeu — from the<br />

<strong>Library</strong>’s extensive map collections<br />

• behind-the-scenes tours <strong>of</strong> the highly successful exhibition<br />

Bondi Jitterbug: George Caddy and his Camera and the<br />

international premiere <strong>of</strong> Wisdom<br />

• presentations on our Discover Collections online stories,<br />

covering diverse subjects from the social life and<br />

entertainment on the australian goldfields to botanical<br />

illustrations from 16th century herbals<br />

• talks on the <strong>Library</strong>’s rare European printed book<br />

collections, with volumes on display such as Fox’s Book<br />

<strong>of</strong> Martyrs (1563), Shakespeare’s First Folio (1623) and the<br />

Kelmscott Chaucer (1896).<br />
