Discover Regensburg!
Dear American Neighbors in
Bavaria,
As mayor of the City
of Regensburg, I would
like to extend a cordial
invitation to you to
visit us. Regensburg,
the largest city in
Eastern Bavaria has
much to offer to its
visitors. First of all it
has its long and interesting history, which
begins in the year 175 A.D. with the establishment
of a military camp. In order to
secure the northern border of the Roman
Empire along the Danube, Emperor Marcus
Aurelius called for the building of a military
settlement for 6,000 soldiers: Castra Regina
- the fortress on the river Regen (Regensburg).
The name comes from the northern
most river, the Regen river, which flows
into the Danube here.

onto the list of UNESCO World Heritage
Sites.
We, however, do not only focus on the past.
Regensburg is a city with three universities
and serves as headquarters to many important
companies. Regensburg is one of the
major driving forces in the German economy

thousand possibilities to shop, to go out,
to go sightseeing, or take in cultural and
sporting events. Did you know that Regensburg
is the home of the reigning German
baseball champions - the Buchbinder Legionaires?

Regensburg became rich and famous in the
Middle Ages. Wealthy merchant families
traded with the luxury goods of that time
across all of Europe. The architecture of the
Middle Ages has been preserved and makes
