Gardening with
Shannon
Our Franklin area is green and beautiful, especially after all
this rain we have had. The air is cooler and those scorching hot
days are behind us. There is no need to worry about those daily
waterings anymore. So, yes that’s right, it must be planting time.
At the moment we are enjoying the past generations, foresight
and their strong interest in gardens and recreational areas. We all
have a responsibility here; we must be doing our part planning,
preparing and planting for our future.
Just imagine how our everyday living would be like without the
lush greenery of trees and plantings, not a nice thought is it?
So yes, it is time to get out the spade and head for the garden.
But first I recommend some foresight and planning. What are
the trees or shrubs being planted for? Is it screening for privacy?
Future shade trees? Architectural style? Flowers? Or fruit?
There is a big list but here are a few of the main considerations
when planting:
- how big will the plants grow?
- should it be evergreen so there’s no big dropping of leaves? Or
should the plant (tree) be deciduous so there’s no blocking of the
winter sun?
- what plants look great together? (remember foliage colours and
textures)
- what conditions does the plant like? (wet, dry, cold or hot)
Yes, it all starts with planning. A design will often save you
dollars over time because your have a plan in front of you to work
towards or get a price from. Different stages of the garden can be
worked on at a time and when the entire garden is finished it all
ties in together and you’ll be delighted with the outcome.
When a designer looks at your property they should listen to your
likes and dislikes, and also what the garden or outdoor living area
will be used for.
Now it is autumn it is a good time to get started on planting and
sowing lawns. The soil temperatures are still warm and there
is plenty of moisture that helps to establish tree and shrub root
systems, hence the rapid plant growth seen.
So, yes if you want to help keep Franklin Green now’s the time
for planting.
Happy Planning and Planting till next time!
