Can you help????
When I ran across this photo on the internet, I had to call the
New York Public Library immediately. "Can I use this?" was
my question. And explained a little bit about 'The Chat'. The
photo is labeled: "Arctic Springs at Galesville Wisconsin."
By the looks of the hills in the background, I think that this
would be looking over the water across what was once the
Galesville Golf Course with the hills of the Silver Creek Valley
in the background. There is not a specific date on the card,
just states between "186? and 1899". Does anyone know what
these buildings were for? When I look at old photos of Princess
Marie Nounka's gravesite, it seems to be much more open,
less trees. Were these buildings part of the Freeman farm?
When did they first name this place Arctic Springs?
“It’s time to bid the community 'good-by'. After
seven years as Pastor of French Creek Church, rural
Ettrick, I have resigned due to health reasons.
My husband, Dave, and I will be moving to Onalaska
in December. We have enjoyed out time in the
Galesville-Ettrick area and have met many wonderful
people. God bless as you continue to work,
play and support the communities.”
And The Answers
And on the photo from the Bue Farm…
I received a call from Bob Lakey. That's
Knutson’s when I knew it. That’s my
mother’s home farm. That’s an old picture,
there’s no silo’s. This barn burned.
10 or 15 years ago. Mae Knutson, was my
Mom. She and her two brothers, Clarence
and Glen Knutson, were all on that farm.
I spent many days there when I was about
6 or 7 years old. A lot of good memories.
Neither of the boys were married so they
spoiled me. My Mom’s dad was George.
The windmill was long gone when I was
there. My Grandpa would take me to the
store in Beach in the morning for an ice
cream cone (where Christa’s is now). In
the afternoon, we would go to Hegg for
another ice cream cone. Good memories
and that's a great picture."
Then Bob's wife, Marge, got on the phone.
"Oon the Swedish book. I have
grandma’s New Testament when she was
confirmed in Sweden. When she got this it
was 1893. It looks familiar because of
grandma Knutson’s (that was George’s
wife). I found her card for leaving Sweden
and coming here." I wondered where
she had met George…."That’s a long
story. Grandpa George was married to
her sister, first. She died. There were
three children in that marriage. When
Carrie married George, they also had
three children. Oh, the card is an inspection
card for immigrants and steerage
passengers. The Port of departure was
Liverpool. The ship was the Celtic. The
date was March __, 1903 at the consulate.
And stamped . It shows she was vaccinated.
The stamp is the U.S. Consulate
Sanitary Inspection, Liverpool. It was all
folded up and tucked inside the New Testament."
In response to questions on
Bucky Harris and Lars Larson
"Robyn-Jane Jensen here. My dad
(Smith Beirne) said to tell you that
Lars Larson is a father to George
Larson and a grandfather to Stanley,
Bob & Leslie Larson. The Larson
farm is where Ricky & Mary Thompson
live now in South Branch on D
between Ettrick & Melrose.
and...Smith does not think there is a
local connection to Bucky Harris."
The quality of meat
I get from Geske Farms
is always excellent– tender & full of flavor!
And this email from
Margaret Congdon Gawlik
"And now for the real
Decorah Prairie School (it
even says so above the
door). I found this
among my mother's collection
of pictures, and
1955 was the year this
school closed.
Mrs. Agnes Johnson was
our teacher, and the next
year she was transferred
to another rural school.
Because my father grew
up next door, he spoke of
a teacher living with
them, probably in the
1920s or '30s."
It had been so long since I ran the photo,
and finally stuck it on robynschat.com
hoping to get an answer, but not really
expecting one. And then came this…
"I am writing to you regarding the picture
of a wedding with Clara, Cora, Ethel,
George, and Bill and others. I am quite
certain that Ethel is Ethel (Phelps) Liebel,
my great-grandmother. She had sisters
named Clara and Cora. Ethel looks like
old pictures I have seen of her, and the
time fits. I don't know if anyone in the
picture is still alive, but my grandmother
Bonnie Gillmeister lives in Galesville and
would likely know more."
s/ Tara Young And my question
was—”Who are you?” Tara's response:
"I live in Maine, but grew up in Galesville.
Bonnie lives on County K in Galesville,
I don't know her phone number off
hand. ….. My great grandmother Ethel
lived out on County K for as long as I can
remember, (but I am only 33) and the
Gillmeister side lived out there even
longer. I hope I am right, and not leading
you down a coincidental path!" And
more specifically added, "I live in Ellsworth.
Bonnie (Yevonne Leible) married
Donald Gillmeister. He was a barber and
then a police officer for many years in
Galesville. He passed away almost 15
years ago. Bonnie was Ethel and Andrew
Leible's only child. My father, Art Gillmeister,
lives just off County K on Cox
Road. My sister, Tia, told me I should
look at the website in an e-mail I read
from her. The more I see that photo, the
more I think I have seen it or one like it
before." Tara
Does anyone know…..
At a meeting of the Buttermakers Association
in 1903, it was recommended
that the society approve of the legislation
of congress relating to the sale of
renovated butter.
What is "renovated" butter?
When Scott Kopp was looking at the map
of where people are from that visit the
website for Robyn's Chat, he asked if I
could tell who they were. "Not really", I
said. Then he wondered if maybe some of
them were previous foreign exchange students
from this area."
…. Good thought.
"It's a palm hook," said my Uncle Don. I
had never heard him talk about it before.
"I've used them. It's not as good as a
husking peg, that fits over all four fingers.
Picked about 5,000 bushel one fall that
way. The year I got out of high school. I
got 5 cents a bushel, could pick up to 120
bushels a day. That was the best I ever
did. 80 to 90 was more the average. Took
a lot of throwing. You started in September
and finished in January. You used
special gloves-they had two thumbs. I
don't think you can buy them anymore.
You're hands got pretty rough. Used
'Corn Huskers' lotion."
Many other responses and comments
came in. "You really only needed one man
if you had good horses", was one remark.
And Roger Bambaneck from Dodge
called, "My Dad talked about that. Besides
doing the chores, he could pick one
double box wagon in the morning, shovel
it off and go back and do the same in the
afternoon and then come back in for
chores."
One gentleman from Afton, MN who happened
to be reading The Chat at Toad's
Cove said "we used these every day.
We'd go out with their Model A Truck
and pick just what we needed for feed that
day. We did that all winter long through
the snow and cold, until the cows were
back on pasture."
On translating the Swedish book..
The only response I
received came as
follows:
"Our friend Ken Anderson e-mailed
his cousin in Sweden and this is the
translation for that phrase you were
looking for." s/ Tom Zahorik
"Subject: Translation: Here is the
translation I received from my cousin
in Sweden. I just cut and pasted the
part he wrote about what Sheila gave
me. "
"Hello Kenneth. Very nice to hear
from you. The text you sent me says:
“ Jesus word, by the author of “den
trofasta löftesgivaren” ( I think this is
a title of a book) “ Jesus mind M Fl”
"You might
this. I understand
he was
there." was
the comment
sent to me by
Bill Crogan.
So when I was in Trempealeau, I made a
point of stopping in. "Yes, I remember that
well. It was cold. Took us (my Dad and
brother and I) all day to get it out."
And then John F. Williamson called, "I was
on the fire department when we were called
out to that accident. There were two guys in
the truck. We found the one buried in the
potatoes but hunted all over for the other
one. He had gotten out and crossed the
river (it was frozen over at the time),
climbed the bank and went to get help."
There was a fire. The potatoes saved the
man.
I still wasn't able to figure out exactly
what did cause the accident.

When I was stopped on the street and handed this photo, I knew because of the
sheet of paper enclosed with it, that it would be perfect for the New Year's Edition.
The enclosed sheet, which I believe was a 'standard' enclosure with the
many baby photographs of this era, was something I had not run into before,
but felt it well worth sharing.
Did you know, the Chryster/Plymouth
Dealership was once located here
I am the Baby.
I am the youngest institution in the world and the oldest.
The Earth is my Heritage when I come into being, and
when I go I leave it to the next Generation of Babies.
My mission is to leave the Earth a better place
than I found it.
With my million little Brothers and Sisters
I can do this, if the World does not impose too
many handicaps.
Now I need Pure Milk and Fresh Air and Play.
When I am a little older I shall need good Schools in
which to learn the Lessons of Life.
I want to live, laugh, love, work, play.
I want to hear good music, read good books,
see beautiful pictures.
I want to build Houses and Roads and Railroads
and Cities.
I want to walk in the woods, bathe in the waters
and play in the snow.
I am Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.
If you will make my way easy now, I will help
you when I grow up. I am your hope-I am the baby.
Friends of the Library will once again host “A Sweet Affair” with Wine and Chocolate sampling and Silent Auction, on February
10, 2008 in the Library. We are seeking contributions of arts and crafts items, professional services, specialty meals/
foods, specialty gift baskets, or a skill or talent you can teach or donate. Last year’s donors to our silent auction were an
essential part of our success. We thank all past donors and wish to encourage their support once again by considering a
contribution for the 2008 auction. New donors will add to the success of our event and help to increase the level of support
for the library as well. Please take this opportunity to join in our celebration and contribute to the ongoing success of our
community library. Call the library during business hours (534-6197) or contact Library Director Judy Grant at:
ja.grant@wrlsweb.org to sign in your donations or to get further information.

I always feel welcome when I go to ….
Just the winter blues or is it something more?
Season Affective Disorder (SAD) is a cyclic, seasonal condition,
meaning signs and symptoms are present only during a particular
season of the year and then go away. Most of the time, signs and
symptoms of SAD appear during the winter and recede in the spring
and summer.
If you have SAD, winter's short days and long nights may induce
feelings of depression, loss of energy, social withdrawal, increased
sleep, overeating, weight gain and difficulty concentrating and processing
information.
What causes SAD is unclear, but heredity, age and your body's
chemical makeup all seem to playa role. So can the availability of
sunlight. Researchers suspect that reduced sunlight may disrupt circadian
rhythms that regulate your body's internal clock, which lets
you know when it's time to sleep and when it's time to wake up. This
disruption may cause depression.
Although there's no cure for SAD, there are treatments to help you
successfully manage the condition. Light therapy is the main treatment
for many people with winter depression. In light therapy, you sit
a few feet from a special lamp that's 10 to 20 times brighter than ordinary
indoor lights for 30 or more minutes each day, usually in the
morning. Your doctor may prescribe an antidepressant in combination
with light therapy or as an alternative, if light therapy isn't working.
Do you know where this went?
The “Goddess of Justice” statue was
removed from the old La Crosse
County Court House and was shipped
to Galesville and placed in a park. The
year? 1904.
Does anyone know which park or what
happened to the statue?
There are also some things that you can do on your own to cope with
seasonal depression.
• Increase the amount of light in your home.
• Get outside.
• Exercise regularly.
• Find ways to relax.
• Take a trip to a sunny, warm location.
Most people experience some days when they feel down. But if you
feel down for days at a time and life seems to be losing its pleasure,
see your doctor. This is particularly important if you notice that your
sleep patterns and appetite have changed.
This was from a spring flood. It washed all of the ice out of the mill pond and completely
pushed the bridge off its foundation. This was what was known as the
Black Bridge across North Beaver Creek. In the back you can see the Presbyterian
Church. During this period (the early 1900's) , the bridges were built from wooden
timbers. The location….Ettrick. (Photo Courtesy of Bill Crogan)
