Leap Year… 2008
February 29th
"Come on up, I've got something to show you," was how the phone conversation
went with Russell Glomstad. He put this little machine on the table and started
turning the crank. "Do you know what this is" was his question. "With the little tiny
metal strips playing against the scored cylinder as you cranked it, my first thought
was some sort of music box. But I safely said, "Don't have a clue." "Well, it really
needs a set of earphones with it," Russell continued, "It's for learning how to listen
to a telegraph machine. As you got better at it you could speed up the crank to hone
your skill. And then you could start thinking in terms of words, instead of letters.
About 25 words per minute, I think. I bought it from a guy who bought it at the
Paulson auction. Paulson was an old radio operator who lived in the big brick house
up by the cemetery." Thanks, Russell. Learn something knew all the time.
We associate it with many things, especially
the old tradition of when a
woman can properly propose to a man.
However, did you know that the term
"Leap Year", even though we are not
skipping a day but adding a day, dates
back to the British Government and
England. .
It seems that hundreds of years ago in
England, the British government didn't
officially recognize leap year February
29ths as having any legal status. Since it
had no legal status, things such as
court, contracts, etc, were not legally
recognized as binding on that day.
In other words, the British 'leapt
over' that day as though it didn't officially
exist, and thus the name: Leap
Year.
And on John Terpening's Orchestra...
I received this email from Lynn
was called Terpening's Comedians.
Art Sorenson-clarinet, Clayton
Olson-piano, Norval Dale-trumpet,
Marvin Quinn-trombone, John
Terpening-drums. My dad played
On the photo above, taken in front of
the house next to the Galesville School, I
received the following email from Ruth
Lyon Buswell, Black River Falls, WI
which filled in one of the blanks in the top
row:
"Hi, Robyn! In the picture of the first
graders on the steps in your February
12th edition, the Ruthie in the back row
with the Red Riding Hood jacket is me-
Ruth Lyon Buswell. We lived up on the
farm until March of my first grade year so
I attended school in Galesville. The picture
brought back many fun memories of
those days! Must now send the Chat to
my brother, Charles, in New Mexico and
see if he recognizes anyone!
Keep up the good work! "
On the Ettrick Band, the first call I got
was from Russell Gilbertson.
"You know Kostner…. He was from Arcadia.
His brother used to own the Annex
Hotel in Arcadia in the 40's. The hotel
was right on the end of Main Street. The
building still stands, but it's not a Hotel."
"What ever happened to Norbert" I
asked. "Arnold was a band director for
one year either before or after he went to
Galesville. I'm not sure what happened to
him. But the guy with the Tuba, its Leslie
Larson. He used to be a neighbor of mine
in Tamarack. You see, after I read this, I
called my sister in Eau Claire. Germaine
Gilbertson, who worked at the hotel in
Arcadia. She remembered Jendrick, she
was in high school there. I asked her if she
knew if Leslie Larson played in the band
Did she remember what instrument he
played She did. It was a Tuba. I haven't
seen him for about ten years, he lives
Northwest of Buffalo, New York.
There isn't any of his close relations still
living around here. He lived on the farm
right next to Roy's Store, Holcomb Coulee.
"Then I received another phone call with
this information. "It should be Leslie Larson.
He was in school at Arcadia . Now
Norbert Kostner, his nickname was
"Korb". I talked to his nephew's wife.
Phyllis Kostner. She couldn't remember
what he did, but he was a World War I
Veteran and was certainly a member of
this band. I know he had two daughters.
Mr. Jendrick went to Arcadia after he left
Ettrick and was the band director there."
Vivienne Grant called on the front photo. That the sign on the front - are that
you listed as "Show Repairing" are you sure" My reply, "nope". "Well Russell
and I think it should be Danuser's Shoe Repairing. I notice that car, and I
remember having old touring cars like that. I used the library. 3139 was my
library number. I used that until they switched over to the new system. "
Then I received this phone call from Russ McKeeth….
"you went down the steps to Roy's Barber shop. When I was a kid I could cross my legs
behind my head, and Roy would give me a quarter and sometimes a free haircut. "
And this delightful conversation with Merna Adams. " There was an apartment an
upstairs on the North end. Ben & Bernice Swartling lived there, I was up there because
we went to teacher's convention together. Before school started the Rural teachers went
in the summer to get their materials and what they were supposed to teach. Some years,
the 5th & 6th had geography together, so you had two years to teach it. We had a lot of
classes to teach in one day. And we had penmanship, too. Bernice was telling about one
of her students, Garland Smith. They had been reading "Dick & Jane" in the morning
and about Spot, the dog. In the afternoon for a different study class they were reading
"Peter's Family" and in that story Spot had kittens . Garland immediately asked the
teacher how Spot, the dog, could have kittens. She always laughed when telling that
story. Anyway, we made hot lunch on a hot plate, like macaroni and cheese. We had a
fish pond at the Halloween program. We used that money to buy groceries like spaghetti
and sometimes people would bring something from home to add to it. When I talked at
White, we got commodities, but nothing for hot lunch...it was like apples, peanut butter,
and nutmeats. When I taught on South Prairie, I didn't own a car, I got a bike at the
Gamble Store in Winona and road that to school and back, it was cold but I had long
wool snow pants.
The library was downstairs on the south end. We used to have our Prom upstairs in the
old City Hall. Ben Swartling had a store on the North End, Diane wanted some of her
things for her wedding from there. Doc Cronk' lived upstairs in that other building
where the stairs go up on the outside. And of course, I went upstairs to use the bathroom.
When I went to High School, I first lived right there in Centerville. Later on in
High School I lived on what they call the Delaney Farm on Harris Road. My Grandma
& Grandpa lived there. I rode to High School with different people. My Senior year was
the first year we had a bus. I walked up to the corner where the old school was and
caught the bus, Ed Rall was the driver. Oh the other night, Rhonda and I went down
and came back and looked at the Chat and here was a picture of Gloria Brandtner, her
sister. She was going to send it to her."
I called her back to make sure I spelled her name correctly. "Oh here's another story.
I was named after Merna Church. Some relative was there from Nebraska to visit
shortly after she was born. He asked what her name was. Well, they hadn't named her
yet. He said, there's a little town in Nebraska called Merna. I really like that name.
And so they named her Merna Church."
Then Bill Crogan
sent in this photo,
confirming
Vivienne Grants
Statement on the
Shoe Repairing.
Bill said, "I remember
my dad
going in here for
Danuser Insurance."
I like this photo
because in the
distance on the
right you can see
the steeple on the
church.
Make Plans To Attend
The 150th
Trempealeau County Fair
July 24th - July 27th
And on the thing in the box in the
photo..
I received many comments, everything
from "We're sure it's a snowman" to
"it’s a road sign, but it can be moved."
My favorite came in this photo from Bill
Crogan… On one side of the bottom
part it says "Go Slow" on the adjacent
side it says "Go Right". However,
The sign on top that goes across ….
Starts off with
this phrase…
"The Penalty
may be
Manslaughter"
I cannot
read the
bottom part.
"Come on in. I've got something to
show you," Larry Kopp said when I
stopped by Wason's Supper Club. He
pulled out the token on the left which is
dated 1895, "Celebrate Hunter Bridge"
and on the bottom "Gordon's Ferry".
"Do you think it’s a replica" was his
question.
"Nope. I've only seen a photo of one
before. It had ribbons that went
through the slit on top and then a pin to
pin it to your suit coat. They had them
at the official opening of Hunter's
Bridge when it replaced the Ferry."
"I studied the picture in the January 29th issue because the 6th graders were my classmates,
the others a year ahead. Although I didn't join them until my freshman year when
our family came to Galesville, I recognized several. Today, when the February 12 issue
arrived, I was sure they would have all been identified by some of the people in the picture,
such as Jim Quinn, John Williamson, and Joyce Ekern. I can give you a start--with
some question marks at the uncertain ones…..Elaine Nelson"
"I was surprised and pleased you printed my Cance letter-Thanks. And also surprised
to see the photo of my 6th grade class, vintage 1939 in the Chat. I can supply more
names….Maybe John Williamson can fill in the blanks. I've known John forever-our
► Matt Fisher, La Crosse, of INOV8 International,
Inc.;
► Wes Hamilton, Winona, an advocate on
specific solar water heating and space heating
solutions.
The Talking Sustainability presentations,
which will include question-and-answer
sessions and materials from presenters, are
designed to connect area residents with area
producers; builders; service providers; educators;
advocates and others.
Each meeting will have a theme. Upcoming
sessions will include hybrid technology,
alternative energies and others.
Get Sustainable Trempealeau County is a
one-year-old, diverse group of concerned
western-Wisconsin citizens.
Get Sustainable works to be an essential
local resource for individuals; families; businesses;
and communities trying to reduce
their carbon footprints.
It also works to educate, assist and support
community leaders dedicated to sustainable
and environmental goals.
Get Sustainable does monthly community
education via local publications. It produced
a local-food guide in 2007 and will update
Specializing In:
I did some major cropping on this old postcard I received from Bill Crogan. But the signs to me made it worth enlarging. First was
the Highway Signs when Ridge Avenue, Gale Avenue, and the "S" Curve on the Upper Table was a main road going through Galesville
before the new highway was put in that bypassed the town. And it was fun to see the Moran Rexall Drugs sign. Just behind that, in the
circle is the Municipal Liquor Store sign. I was having trouble putting things in perspective, so I called Jim Quinn wondering what happened
to the Post Office. "It's there. Right next to the drug store". That's what I thought but I couldn't see a sign, I am guessing
that's why the flag poles are out front. "The Municipal Liquor Store was where Mary Mensing had her beauty shop. And the stairs
going up to the apartments above are also there. The Galesville Republican Office was on the right."
"There have been numerous attempted holdups reported " was how the story
went. Thomas Bender was attacked on the road. One of the three men grabbed
his horse by the bit, but the horse shied away and ran. A number of bullets were
fired at Thomas by the three men that attacked him. The year 1893.
150 lbs and 8 ft from the nose to the tip of his tail, that's how big the wolf was
that was reported being trapped in the late 1880's. I don't know how that relates
to today, but it sounds big to me.
Fevers in Children
Q. What is the normal temperature for children
A. Children's body temperatures vary normally throughout the day and
from child to child - a range instead of an exact number, from 98.2 to
100.4 degrees Fahrenheit measured rectally.
Q. So what constitutes a fever
A. For a child of any age, fever is defined as a temperature greater than 99.5
degrees Fahrenheit.
Q. When do I need to call my healthcare provider
A. Call your healthcare provider if your child:
- Has a temperature of 104 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Cent
grade) or higher
- Has taken acetaminophen for three days and the fever persists with
other signs of illness
- Is younger than two months old and has a temperature at any time
higher than 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit
- Is between two and three months of age and has a temperature higher
than 101 degrees Fahrenheit and shows any of the signs of illness
listed in the next question.
Q. If I don't need to call my healthcare provider, what do I do
A. Continue to monitor your child for signs of illness such as loss of ap
petite, vomiting or abdominal pain, extreme irritability, unusual sleepi
ness, severe headache, persistent crying, sore throat or inability to
swallow, mental confusion, ear pain, difficulty breathing, and pain with
urination. Also:
- Keep the child at rest or in a quiet activity.
- Provide plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration.
- Frozen ice pops may be popular with your child.
- Have your child wear loose, lightweight clothing and offer a blanket
when needed for warmth.
- Give infants a sponge bath in lukewarm - not cold - water.
- Give your child acetaminophen.
When I ran across the above photo, with the Larson home near Ettrick, I just
had to email Marilyn to get permission to print it. "This is a postcard sent by
George Larson to Rob Smith [Uncle living in Yakima, WA] of the Lars P. Larson
home about 1910. The lady on the left is neighbor Mrs. Hans Eckern, while
the lady on the far right is George's wife, Pauline, and their children: Grace b.
1903, Vera b 1905, Stanley b. 1907, Leslie 1909." I was also curious as to how
Marilyn came by this photo. Her response "Lars married my greatgrandfather's
sister Grace Smith. The photo was in my great-grandfather, R. W.
Smith, photo album." Donated by Marilyn Morgan
