When I heard that this
was around, I couldn't
wait to see for myself.
Bottled by the American
Medicinal Spirits Company
this whiskey specifically
stated 'for Medicinal Use'.
It was an answer to the
enactment of prohibition. It
states on the back that it
was bottled before
Jan 17, 1920. This had
been ordered by Penny
Oines's grandfather but
had to be held because of
prohibition and was not
picked up until the early
50's. Still with the cork and
seal and the 12-1/2 cent
Wisconsin stamp on it.
I was surprised how many readers did
not recognize Old Main when it was a
two-story building..
A Reminder on Policy.
If I receive something unsigned, It will not be
printed in Robyn's Table Chat.
I received the following email request
that lets you know what a small world
we live in:
"Hi : we are interested in subscribing to
your publication. My Aunt Birdine,
from Franklin, Wisconsin, gave us a
copy when we visited Minnesota and
Wisconsin this June. It had a picture of
the old Church sawmill and we just received
a copy with the school picture
that included the child, Corneille
Church, who my dad was named after.
My mother was Deloris Church from the
Oscar Horn family and my dad is
Corneille Church from Trempealeau,
son of Royce Church and Thelma Johnson
Church.
Please let us know the costs and how to
have the paper sent to California.
Thanks! Jenny Church"
Well, that led to an immediate response
from me. And Jenny answered my
questions… My response back should
fill you in a little more on why I was so
excited …
"Oh, my goodness!!! How come I don't
know you?
Oh, you brought back so many memories...
names I had totally forgotten
about, like your Aunts. I'm not even
sure when we moved to Buttermilk Alley..but
I am thinking it was about 1948
or early 49. ….You can tell your father
we lived in the old "Sutcliff" house,
right between Mrs. Smith and George &
Lizzie Gould... We could sit on our front
steps and watch the ball games in the
summer...
Now there are so many trees, you can't
see anything from there.
Oh, how us kids adored Jerr y (Church),
and his friend "Teddy Bear" Krug .
They were so nice to us… I would certainly
love to see him again sometime,
although I don't know if I'd recognize
him.
I don't think I've seen him since we
moved out to the country in about 1957.
Thelma was always fun. We went to the
back door of the house... I'm not sure
why… And we'd stop and visit. She had
the most fantastic ironing machine I
have ever seen. Does your Dad remember
anything about that? She could run
sheets through it..
We kids, Mary, Billy, and Susie Dunne
and my brother, Willie, and I thought
that was wonderful.. I think sometimes
she just re-ironed sheets so we could
watch..... Absolutely marvelous times...
And to think that you are related to that
dear, lovely lady, Birdine (Finch) ...
I wonder if your father has any photos of
Buttermilk Alley you could scan and
send me?
OH, HOW WE LOVED GROWING UP
THERE!
An absolute delight to hear from
you! You made my year....
I received a call from Russell Glomstad on Ettrick Festivals after seeing this
1937 photo in the Ettrick Parade Special.
"I remember playing at Pickle Days in Ettrick when I was still working at
Midland Co-op. So pretty close to 35 years ago. Lloyd Scarseth and I played on
the back of a pick up. We had a power converter that converted off the battery
to electric for our amplifiers. I think Ron Myrland was driving the truck.
Lloyd played the accordion, I played the guitar. Usually played polkas and
waltzes.
After the parade we'd go over to Myron Johnson's and watch the rest of the
parade and unload our stuff.
On the stories on the 1866 Flood..
August 26, 2008 Page 2
It's fall and hunting season and a
time for walks in the woods…
So, when Dave Geske popped in,
I asked him to give some suggestions
about handling ticks and what to
watch for:
"I think that people should watch for
ticks coming into their home on their
clothing, should always use repellants,
which should be 30% active ingredient.
Check scalp lines, belt lines, check
yourself over! Fall is a big time to
watch because they're (ticks) getting
ready for winter, looking for large
mammals to attach to. Be sure to check
your animals - especially dogs. Get it off
(refer to insert in previous issue of The
Chat). Do you think it's too cold?
At times when there is no snow cover,
these ticks are active even on sunny
days in February.
Fall is the second highest period of
time for human infection from ticks."
Post Office
On Wheels
By: Debra Wilkening
Galesville Postmaster
In 1896, our nation’s cities began reaching
out to rural America, connecting farms
and homesteads one address at a time with
a wealth of products and services. The
connection was letters, catalogs, and parcel
post. As the connections to our rural
areas grew, so did our nation and its economy.
Today, America’s rural carriers serve
more than 36 million addresses coast-tocoast.
Not just homes and farms, but office
buildings, apartment complexes, and
shopping malls. You probably have seen
your rural carrier at work, driving alongside
the road, mailbox to mailbox, picking
up, and delivering mail. What you may
not have seen, though, is the wide range of
products and services they provide. Did
you know in addition to picking up and
delivering your mail, they:
• Pick up and deliver packages, and
Priority & Express Mail items?
• Sell stamps and Postal Money Orders?
• Accept and deliver Registered Mail,
Certified Mail and Insured items?
• Accept payment for COD packages?
If you would like to order stamps, post
cards, or stamped envelopes, just ask your
rural carrier for a Stamp Purchase Order
form. It comes with its own envelope.
If you give your rural carrier written authorization,
he or she will leave oversized
parcels on your porch, in your garage, or
other location, weather permitting, so you
don’t have to go to the Post Office. You
can also call for redelivery of other items
requiring your signature at 608-582-2068.
Rural carriers serve the farthest regions of
our nation. They are proud to deliver for
you!
Feeling Stressed? These 20 Tips Can Help You Relax
1. Go to bed on time.
2. Get up on time so you can start the day unrushed
3. Say “No” to projects that wont fit into your time schedule or that will
compromise your mental health.
4. Simplify and unclutter your life
5. Delegate tasks to capable others.
6. Less is more.
7. Allow extra time to do things and get to places.
8. Pace yourself. Spread out big changes and difficult projects over time;
don't lump the hard things all together.
9. Take one day at a time.
10. Separate worries from concerns. If a situation is a concern, find out
what you have to do and let go of the anxiety. If you cant do anything
about a situation, forget it.
11. Take less; listen more.
12. Do something for the kids in your life every day.
13. Get enough rest and eat right.
14. Get organized so everything has its place.
15. Write down thoughts and inspirations.
16. Every day, find time to be alone.
17. Make friends with good people.
18. Laugh, and then laugh some more.
19. Take your work seriously, but not yourself at all.
20. Develop a forgiving attitude, and be kind to unkind people.
First Presbyterian Church
Galesville
This alternative service is held at 5:00
p.m. on Saturdays in the Ettrick Chapel,
which is located in the First Presbyterian
Church, Galesville, at the end of the hall, on
the lower level, under the Koinonia Room.
If attendance warrants, the service will be
moved to the Sanctuary. It is planned as a
condensed version of a Sunday worship,
lasting no longer than 30 minutes.
With the school starting this
week, I pulled out a section on
school... courtesy of the recollections
written by Ardyce Johnson
on their years in Silver Creek.
"Leo Betz, Norman Oines, and Thomas
Irvine were on the school board and
Silver Creek School closed before we
moved here in the year 1946.
Charlotte Toppen Dykstra was the
teacher. Her pupils were: ??? Vernon
Oines.
Marion Brown Johnson taught in
1937 and the pupils and where they
lived were:
Wilfred Craig (On our farm), John Peterson(Leo
Betz farm), John Sahlstrom
(Sahlstrom farm), Howard Amundson (Jim
Sahlstrom house), Vernon Park (Spahr
Acres (Dale Betz place),John Mahone
((Stetzer place), Theresa Mahone(Stetzer
place), Meryl Craig (On our farm),
Wendell Byom (?), Elsie Person (Leo Betz
farm), Shirley Brophy (Ron Corcoran
farm) , Connie Peterson, (Leo Betz farm),
Elrene Irvine(Nancy Buckner Stellpflug
farm), Delores Craig(On our farm), Francis
Mahone (Stetzer place), Alice Marie Dick
(Annie Geske farm).
In 1940's the rural schools were consolidated
with the city schools by law,
causing many rural schools to close.
In 1946, Silver Creek school closed
because of low enrollment and consolidation.
School was sold and torn
down. The materials were moved to a
location in Crystal Valley and rebuilt by
a farmer rural teacher and her husband
(Kriesels)
The land was returned to the descendants
of the Butman family and they
sold it to the present owners of the former
Butman farm, the Earl Betz family.
Teachers in the 1930's and 40's were
Carol Halderson Young, Agnes Hunter
Johnson, Lillian Boardman (Cecil's sister)
Margaret Larken Hanson (Kelly's
mother), Marion Brown Johnson and
Charlotte Toppen Dykstra.
Early settlers in the valley were:
DeGroot, Uhl, Herman park, Schaller,
Riny Lun, Peterson (Leila's folks),
Glassford, Irvine, Sahlstrom, Samson,
Andriesen, and Henry DeYoung families.
A frame school house without a
basement, an entry way was built on to
use for coats, dinner pails, water pails,
etc.
A large wood stove stood in the
Northwest corner, with a jacket of
metal around it for safety. School had
double seats. Sometimes three students
hand to share one desk because
of enrollment. Later on new single
desks were purchased.
A pan with water on top of the
stove was used to warm food which
the children brought in small glass jars
to have with their dinner. Sometimes
mothers would bring large kettles of
soup to treat them. Before a well was
dug, children carried water in buckets
from the closest neighbor. Later a well
was dug and a large crock jar with a
bubbler was added.
Kerosene lamps were sitting in
brackets fastened to the wall for light.
Wood for the stove was kept in a shed
away from the school. Children carried
in wood for morning before going home
at night."

"You probably need to talk to Don Bautch about these," was the note in the email from Bill
Crogan that accompanied these photos with the telephone poles. Well, I caught Don at the
Pig Stop and asked him to drop by to look at them. What an education that was.
As he looked at the top photo he said , "More than likely Dave & Donnie Severson's father,
Oscar, most likely would have kept lines like these going. This photos is certainly an early period
by the poles and the dirt road. When you look at the pole on the left, these probably would
have been approximately 24 feet high. It took two wires for one line. In the country, rural
lines could have anywhere from eight to twelve, maybe even more, customers on a line. Many insulators
only had one wire. However, some were made to hold two wires per insulator. All insulators
were either porcelain or glass. Some were even dated. One wire was a "talk" path, the other a
"ring" path." I was surprised to learn that there are still two wires per line in the cable coming
into my home per circuit. Don added, "Although much of the cable is buried now. A lot of
the cable above ground currently runs on power poles. " As I pulled up the bottom photo, he
looked closely and then thought that the top short bar on this pole held the 'Toll Circuits',
"They were long distance circuits," he explained. "Usually all copper wire."
After talking with Don, I ran across this tidbit in a report my mother had in her files
regarding the telephone service. "In 1939 it was supplied by the Community Telephone Company of
Wisconsin with the Bell System. According to the directory 69 offices, 172 farms and 132 residents
had telephone service. Seven operators and a staff of linemen keep the communications lines
open at all times." Following that the report continued with this telegraph information in Galesville.
"Service is supplied by the Western Union Telegraph Company each day from 7:15am to
4:15pm. The office is located at the Northwestern depot. Rates to Madison for telegrams are 10
words - 36¢ plus Government tax; Night letters 25 words-23¢ plus Government tax." Mom had written
on the front of this folder "This report was written in 1942."
I am curious, as I look at the photo below, does anyone know anything about the old wooden
sign on the left (in white box)? I don't remember that at all.
You are welcomed!
