The National Geographic Society was
founded on January 27, 1888.
It's purpose was "the increase and diffusion
of geographical knowledge."
I think every collector of area postcards has this photo postcard…..
Does anyone know where this is?????
The first publication of the magazine was
just months following its organization.
However, the cover was plain brown, the
articles technical, and no photographs were
used. When a new editor came on board in
1899, the magazine changed and so did the
circulation. It went from 1,000 copies per
month to 2 million. It was the first to print
natural-color photos of sky, sea and the
North and South Poles. The National Geographic
soon became a common fixture in
many homes, introducing us to the world.
The
What's for lunch?? When I
was reading some old papers I received
from Theresa Bender, I had to chuckle.
An excerpt from one article "After
the meeting coffee, lunch and cigars
will be served."
And then this note from Glasgow:
"The Ladies had a Candy Making
Party . Lunch was served at midnight."
"Of course it is" I said, writing down
the word as the caller spoke. "It's called
a Hookaroon. They still sell them today."
Then he went on to explain how he knew
that and had worked with them. They're
used with logging or lumber.
And overheard on the street…..
Did you notice how foggy it was onSunday...
I couldn't even see my neighbor's
front door.
"Do you know how to get in touch with Nancy Kruse?" was the way the phone
call started from Art Anderson in reference to the Kaiser photo. And then
started to explain about the car. "Hold it, Art. Call me back. I need to get on a
different phone", which he did. He went on to explain…
"What happened, about 20 years ago. I happened
to drive buy an auto auction place in Holmen and
saw the Kaiser. Then when I drove by again, I had
to stop and look at it, ended up buying it at the Auction.
All I had to do was add oil and it ran. It was
a a 1953 Kaiser Carolina 4-door, medium to light
blue, the last one Lloyd Kruse bought (Photo On
Left). The one in the photo last issue was a '51
Kaiser 4-Door Deluxe. "
For those that don't know Art Anderson,
he is a National renowned Wildlife
Artist with his most recent award being
the 2008 Wisconsin Waterfowlers sponsor
print artist. He also does other
marvelous works such as the one on the
right with the '57 Chevy, '58 Corvette,
'54 Ford, '59 Buck, and the '57 Plymouth.
"This is what we used on the farm
for husking corn", Mildred (Mrs.
George Hansen) said as she put this
around her fingers. "We? Did you
husk corn?" was my response. "Oh
sure. This is one of the little things I
"I was just at the Independence Library
and Kathy, the librarian, told me that
the mystery picture of the milkman that
you ran in the Chat has been
solved. Teresa Hertsfeldt came in and
said the man was Fred Markham ( son
of Arthur and a grandson of the Markhams
that built the Markham Castle in
Independence). There was a Markham
dairy farm at the bottom of Castle Hill
at the present Bob Luethi farm. Teresa
said that Fred was a familiar face to
everyone in Independence years ago.
.. The Library is now looking for milk
bottles from the dairy to make a display
in the library along with the picture. It
was such fun, Kathy hopes to find another
mystery picture. Thanks for the
help!!"
s/ Nancy Guthrie Bergman
And the often-heard comment on the
above photo… "Remember when Charley
Andersen used to do that?"
And I received this call from someone
reading The Chat…. "Where is Gale
Ferry Road?" was the question.
The Craft Barn
Hwy 53 through Galesville, turn at the
Piggly Wiggly onto Silver Creek Rd; down
1 ½ miles on the left.
Large brown eggs $1.50 per dozen.
(Limited supply of jumbos available at $1.50)
had room to save when we sold the farm in Crystal
Valley. I imagine it was George's father's husking
peg. You know we used to listen to the National
Corn Husking Championships on the radio."
When I stopped to visit with Thelma Jean Congdon
she told me that Sanford "Sandy" Waller was
the Champion Husker in this area.
On Renovated Butter…
The first response I got was from Jennifer
at the Bank of Galesville who "googled it
and printed off some sheets.
Then came this email from Sandy Ravnum.
Your question in the last Chat interested
me, "What is "renovated" butter? My
dad was a cheesemaker in the southwestern
part of Wisconsin. He sold his cream
to another cooperative that then made
butter. This is why this question was of
interest to me. This is what I found.
Old butter that became rancid or stale
was collected in barrels and shipped to
another plant for this process. Separators
removed the foreign matter, it was
heated by steam coils, reduced to oil, and
purified with chemicals. It was then
solidified, mixed with fresh milk, and
churned. The finished product was
molded into pound squares and tubs. The
law provided that "renovated" butter had
to be marked in full-faced letters one half
inch square on each package.
In the Wisconsin Buttermakers' Association
/ Second annual report of the
Wisconsin Buttermakers' Association :
held at Waukesha, Wisconsin, February
24th, 25th and 26th, 1903 there were three
grades of butter on the market as
listed in their annual meeting. First,
strictly fancy print butter; second,
fine uniform creamery butter in tubs, and
lastly, renovated butter which was
very cheep as compared to fancy print
butter." (As I read this the Centerville
Creamery Fancy Butter box that is in Scott
Kopp's collection made more sense)
"Are you from here?" was another question
I had. …."I live here in the area now
and have for the last 20 years. My husband
Steve got the Chat from the Ettrick
gas station. My dad was Merlyn Fritsch
from
Cobb, Wisconsin. He owned a small rural
cheese factory until 1989 when he
retired and sold and closed his operation.
The butter that was made from cream
that he had at the factory was rated Grade
B butter because it was made from the byproduct
of cheese. The whey that was
taken off of the cheese was then separated
again to take out the last little bit of
cream. That was sold to be produced into
that second grade of butter."
And on the
Parlor
Matchbook
cover.
Responses came
from Carroll
Sacia and Philip
Jensen…..
PLEASE……
Look at this photo again…..
As a group up at the Pig
Stop was looking at this
photo, Jim Filkouski
thought it was probably
taken just below his house.
I called Wendy Stephans,
but he said he hadn't had a
chance to get the paper.
And Virginia wasn't home.
I still believe that this is Antoine
Grignon in the photo.
I have no idea what the
foundation is. Can anyone
help with this??????
Happenings at the Manor
When taking a look back at 2007, its easy
to see that the residents of Marinuka
Manor have definitely had an event-filled
year. There were 11 community outings,
which included a tour of the Brush Museum,
a night at the La Crosse Loggers
game, fishing, both off the dock and from
a pontoon boat (sponsored by the North
American Squirrel Association), shopping
at Walmart, going out to eat and traveling
to Riverside Park, both for a picnic in the
summer and to see the Rotary Lights display
in the winter. Everyone also had several
opportunities to enjoy the outdoors
as there were 5 different occasions
where we were able to have musical entertainment
outside, either in the front of
the building or in our courtyard.
Each holiday was also celebrated this
past year, along with other themed parties,
including a 50's party, Casino Party,
Superbowl Party, a Poker Walk and an
Oktoberfest Party. Every single resident's
birthday is also celebrated, as our auxiliary
sponsors the cost of a corsage
to wear on their special day, staff and
residents do their part by singing "Happy
Birthday" before lunch is served and each
resident is presented with a gift during
our monthly birthday party, which is held
the last Friday of every month. At times,
women's groups from local churches volunteer
to sponsor this event and line up
the entertainment, provide the birthday
"treat" and purchase the resident's
gift. These include Trempealeau Methodist
Church, Mount Calvary Lutheran
Church, Zion Lutheran Church, Hardies
Creek Lutheran Church and St Bartholomew
Catholic Church. Thank you to all of
the women who have volunteered to help
"celebrate" our residents and their birthdays.
If anyone is interested in helping
with this in 2008, please call us at 582-
2211 and ask for Dana. This monthly
event is always scheduled for the last
Friday of the month at 2:15.
We would like to thank the Ladies Auxiliary
of the Manor for their efforts this past
year. They sponsor both the Valentines
Day Party and a Christmas Party, as well
as organize a Bake Sale, Pie and Ice
Cream Social and our annual Love Lights
Program. Many volunteer weekly to help
out with bingo, cards, lead rosary, do light
sewing/mending of resident's items and
lead reminiscent discussions with the
residents; some have even joined us for
community outings to provide extra assistance
If anyone is interested in joining, please
call us at 582-2211. They meet only four
times a year and would appreciate new
members. Their next meeting is scheduled
for Tuesday, February 5th at 2:00 at Eden
House.
One evening an old Cherokee man told his
people. He said, "My son, the battle is between
two "wolves" inside us all.
One is Evil.... It is anger, envy, jealousy,
With the New Year, you can tell it is a time for reflection. I've had photos of classes and people. And I have to
agree, it's fun looking back. This is the Grant School in 1956. The teacher in the back is Charlotte Dykstra.
To Host “A Sweet Affair”
February 10, 2008
Friends of the Library will once again host “A Sweet Affair” with Wine and Chocolate sampling and Silent Auction, on February
10, 2008 in the Library. We are seeking contributions of arts and crafts items, professional services, specialty meals/
foods, specialty gift baskets, or a skill or talent you can teach or donate. Last year’s donors to our silent auction were an
essential part of our success. We thank all past donors and wish to encourage their support once again by considering a
contribution for the 2008 auction. New donors will add to the success of our event and help to increase the level of support
for the library as well. Please take this opportunity to join in our celebration and contribute to the ongoing success of our
community library. Call the library during business hours (534-6197) or contact Library Director Judy Grant at:
ja.grant@wrlsweb.org to sign in your donations or to get further information.

PREVENTING BACK PAIN
Exercise in a regular form is the best preventive method for reducing the
likelihood of back problems. Regular activity will increase one's aerobic capacity,
improve overall conditioning and strengthen muscle groups.
Regular exercise includes stretching. When you increase the muscle's flexibility,
you decrease the potential for straining that muscle. Stretching helps
tone the support muscles of the back and other structures thereby increasing
strength and flexibility.
Strength resistance training (i.e. weights, nautilus, etc.) will make the muscle
stronger, decreasing the chance of injury. Strong muscles, especially
abdominal, low back and legs, support the back and pelvis and will relieve
back problems.
You should be careful before beginning any type of exercise program, especially
using weights. Ask your primary care provider, exercise physiologist or
physical therapist for advice. There are numerous clubs that have tailormade
programs for individuals needing special instruction.
Be smart, start slow and work up to a comfortable level over a few weeks
time. Do the exercise to a tolerance level and don't believe the old adage
"No Pain, No Gain." For if there is pain, there is inflammation and that's not
good.
Finally, make sure you stretch before and after. And, try to have some fun.
