And The Answers
When all else fails….
laugh.
And on the Gale Theatre tickets
that came from Ann Prochowicz
in Trempealeau, WI.
When she asked what was playing,
Keith Cook showed up with
this from his files.
The thing I didn't remember was
the spelling of 'theatre' It's the
first time I ever noticed that it was
're'.
And this was a week of a lot of
contacts, but didn't get the answers…..
yet…...
Where was the horse racing track
in Trempealeau?
I received a call from Tom
Eichman who said his father,
Harry, knew exactly where this
was. He had heard his grandfather
talk about it…so more on that
in the next issue.
The same situation exists with the
Larson house in Ettrick.
"It's a frying pan made into a clock."
is what Bill Finch said when he
brought me this photo. Turns out
that Don Lovig, a former Galesville
resident, makes these. I believe Don
donates the money he makes from the
clocks.
Does anyone have
And on Merna Church…
Verneille Hunter called to add this information
on Dr. John Powell and also the
name Merna"…." Aunt Mern used to
work for Dr. Powell. Whenever he used to
go on call when the flu epedemic was
around in 1918, he would leave her at different
homes to take care of the patient.
Then when he'd come back to check on the
patient, he would take her onto the next
place with him and probably leave her
there. Gert was his wife. She was a great
singer with that low voice. I do remember
her saying that he was so exhausted he
would stop and sleep between the different
homes during that time. My grandmother,
Mary Melinda Milburn, Aunt Merna's
Mother, was born in Merna, Nebraska but
they lived in Broken Bow, NE. When she
was just a young girl she came to Trempealeau.
When Grandpa saw her walking
on the street, he said that's the girl I'm
going to marry. Because Aunt Merna was
an RN and helped with the delivery of
babies and some were named after her…
like Merna Adams & Merna Wilbur. "
Did you know….
We've all heard the story that the Mill
in Galesville once shipped flour to the
Queen of England. But did you know
that when the flour was shipped to
Queen Victoria, the special barrels
which had 12 hoops each were made
at the mill's coopering shop which
employed 20 men.
The timing couldn't have been better when David Mahlum handed me this photo. This is the season for many
area cantatas. David said in a note "Here is a picture of what I cal 'The First Area Cantata'. They sang
in many area churches. The photo was taken in French Creek. Thanks to Eldon Berg, Bud Swenson, Laurel
Dahl, and Gertie Erickson who all helped identify names. This group was organized & directed by pastor
Harold Aasen and accompanied by Esther Hauge. Listed Are Members Of The Joint Choir of 1944 From Frencb
Creek, Tamarack, Fagerness, And South Beaver Creek. Many people in Frencb Creek have this picture in their
home. There is also one in the church basement. Some members are not yet identified. " Can anyone fill in
WHAT IS INFLUENZA?
Influenza (also called “the flu”) is a viral infection in the nose, throat and
lungs. About 10% to 20% of Americans get the flu each year. Some people
get very sick. Each year, about 130,000 people go to a hospital with the flu,
and 20,000 people die because of the flu and complications.
The flu may cause fever, cough, sore throat, a runny or stuffy nose, headache,
muscle aches and tiredness. Most people feel better 1 or 2 weeks,
but for some people, the flu leads to serious diseases, such as pneumonia.
The influenza vaccine (the flu shot) can help protect you from getting
the flu.
How can you avoid getting the flu?
The best way to avoid getting the flu is to get the flu shot each fall (in October
or November), before the flu season begins. The vaccine is available
by shot or by nasal spray. FYI: You cannot get the flu from the flu shot or
the nasal-spray vaccine.
You can also reduce your risk of catching the flu by washing your hands
frequently, which stops the spread of germs. Eating healthy, exercising and
getting enough sleep also play a part in preventing the flu because they
help boost your immune system.
If you are sick, make sure that you cover your mouth when you cough (use
a mask) and wash your hands often to prevent giving the flu to others.
Some people who get the vaccine will still get the flu, but they will usually
get a milder case than people who aren’t vaccinated. The vaccine is especially
recommended for people who are more likely to get really sick from
flu-related complications.
Ardell Tollefson brought this photo in. It is the Franklin Merchants ball team. Some of these are identified.
I'm going to try to translate this the best I can. The bat boy in front is Robert Hardie. Behind him in the first row: Chester Johnson,
Gene Bisher, Leland Claire, _______, Ray Lien, and Kenneth Johnson
3rd Row: Walter "Tollie" Tollefson, Roulle Young (catcher), _____. Eugene Tollefson, ______
In the back is the pitcher, Gaylord "Sam" Tollefson, pitcher. The picture was taken in about 1951 or 1952.
I was curious as to who the merchants in Franklin were. Ardell thought one was Keith Hardie who ran the Gas Station and Garage. Another
perhaps Theodore Fosse that owned the General Store.
Can anyone identify these team members or know who the merchants were that sponsored the team?
It was
Tom Pfaff Sr.'s Birthday
and the folks that were
at the Ettrick Express
in the morning were
enjoying the
free cup of coffee & roll.
