Volume III; Issue V Ettrick Parade Extra August 26, 2007
All it said was “This one really needs to be about three feet wide to really see it all, from Vivian Truax collection”
when I opened the email from Bill Crogan. I could hardly wait to see the photo attached. Above is Ettrick, as it was. The circled
building is the original Peter Huff Blacksmith Shop and next to it the Huff Rooming House. To get your bearings, it was
located where United Bank now stands on Main Street. This photo was taken from the top of creamery hill where Dean
Bishop house is now. Not sure of the date, but it is Pre 1900. On the right is a larger photo of Peter Huff’s.
Did you know….
At one time “Special Excursion Trains”
were set up from Winona and La-
Crosse just to bring people to the
County Fair.
My how things change…
I had to laugh when I read this brief….
“ Because the telephone at the Hilton
farm had been out of commission a
week, we gathered only a meager report
of the marriage of Miss Fern Hilton
to C. Lester Nichols…”
I was really curious when I walked into Weiner’s and he said “Wait a minute, I’ve got something for
you.” He went shuffling through some papers and handed me a couple pieces of paper. This is from Rolland Byom in North
Bend. I couldn’t believe it when I looked at them. It was the Peacock Band and a list of names. Well, needless to say, when I got
working on the paper, I just had to call the Byoms. I talked to Doris about the photo. “I think Thelma Jean gave me this. It was
taken at the Peacock. I’ve even got one of a lot of them over in the Lime Quarry in Mindoro all dressed up in their Sunday
Clothes.” Then we talked about the band a little more. She went on to say “My son, Jerry, always sees that he brings me one of your
papers. I sure enjoy them. I’ve been thinking about you today and Victoria Waller. I have such a good picture of her. ”
I almost forgot. The names of the Peacock Band Members are: Amandos Modahl, Henry Clausen, Alex & Bernt Komperud, Lem
Waller, Otto Peterson, Wilson Ellison Afred Ravnum, Melvin Byom, Octive Scarseth, Odell Evenson, Harry Clark, Frank & Will
Conrad, Jemima Bibby, Louise Comperud, Mildred Erickson, Julia Conrad, Lawrence and Albert Baardseth, Tom, Joe, Ross
Bibby, George Gilboe.
Remember the Ettrick Northern???
Well, this summer when they were
working on the Hwy 53 north of Beach
Corner , they dug out some of the old
narrow gauge rails that had been buried
underneath the highway a number of
years ago.
