And on the photo in Ettrick…I received this message on my answeringmachine. And The Answers?“Robyn, this is Larry Corcoran….I’m calling you about the picture of the twomen in the buggy the last Chat, in front ofthe old building that became the Terpening’sBuilding. The man in the foregroundis my Dad’s first cousin, Perry Corcoran, that owned and operated the Ettrick Hotel the old one that burned and was torn downhere a couple or 3 years ago.The second one, seeing as it was the Wayne Truax Collection, I assume it was a connectionto the Truaxes. So if you could tell me where you got that picture it would surelyhelp. I’m pretty sure its Alfred or Bill Truax holding a small child. And that small childcould have been Wayne or Ken … or Bob.”I called Larry. He explained that Perry had lived with them his folks the last four yearsof his life. .. And on The Bue Tinshop, he said Morris Casey was a tinsmith when he wasmarried. It was Morris Casey that did the tin work. And after seeing the mantel clockfrom the old FourMile on County K,Delayne Rand sent inthis email along withthis photo of theTeaberry.“I have this 3-column mantle clockwhich I got at George Scott's auction someyears ago. Runs good but chime broke andhaven't taken the time to get it fixed.”And this email from Tom Zahorik ….Looking at the picture on page 8 of the10-2 issue, we think that the girl on theend is Sheila. Sheila thinks that thatblonde might have been Mary Schilling, maybe.Page page 9 on the October 16 issue, thecircle shut seems like it might have beenfor loading feed, flour, grain, corn, etc.The Hotel, the only one I know was theRiverside. I had not heard of the DecorahHouse before. This looks like where myGrandma Inga Klandrud, use to stand onthe porch and throw hot donuts to thetrain engineer as he pulled up to the feedmll with the train. They use to toot to letmy Grandma know they were coming. SoI've been told. The three daughters,Helen, Grace and Georgia (my other) useto be the maids and wait on tables alongwith Pete Renvig's wife. Keep up the goodwork. Love the pictures. And on the tool that GarySchindler had….And more on Cal’s Colt…This email from Roberta Ingraham, Oregon,IL.“ In regard to an article in your10-2 -07 issue, on the spring horse, I mighthave an answer.I had one just like it, in 1945, I was 5yrsold, I’m now 67, you do the math.I believe they were made here, in Oregon,Il,at a local toy factory, which hassince burned. The local historical society isworking on it for me.The toy factory opened up a new way oflife for Oregon, Mothers went to work. Most husbands were away at war.Day care also came into the picture, thePresbyterian minister’s wife took care ofmost of the children. The article brought back many memories.Isn’t it ironic that Ruth Wilder broughtme a copy to read. She is the Oregon Il.subscriber.” I responded to the email andwondered if Roberta was from this area.“No, I’m from Oregon,Illinois. Ruth LarsenWilder had been visiting her Mother,Mildred Larsen, brought me a copy of thepaper. That’s why I found it so ironic thatshe brought me the issue with the springhorse in it.”And then I bumped into Ray Fritsch atthe Express Mart. “You know that Cal’sColt? My brother had one. It would havebeen the early 40’s. Ours was red. Weride that thing around. We called it‘Callie’.I received many comments andideas on this. Someone thoughtthat it might be a fish gaff used for fishing before they had nets. And then I heard from Bill Crogan and Bill Finch. Each onethought this was used for carrying rails for the railroad. When I ran into John Bork, he thought he had seen one hisGrandpa used for pulling planks out of a pile.I’ll probably take it up to Marinuka Manor this next week andsee what some of them think.I’m still waiting to see if anyone else has any ideas, or if they knowfor sure what this was used for.And on Gibby Rall and his 80years of music….There were many memories and commentsshared on this article.“I think I have a photo of one of thecombos Gerald Rall was in. I need togo up to my attic and look,” was oneof the comments I got. Then came this email from a ladynamed Wendy...“ Dear Robyn,My mom, Iris Young, called metoday. Her nephew Donavon Larsonhad stopped with a copy ofyour paper (Vol. 3, Issue 7) toshow her an article you had writtenre: her cousin, Gerald Rall.I believe it was on p. 3. Momwould really like a copy ofthis. I've found your website andwas very impressed. Is there away I can pull up your publicationsfrom there or is it possibleyou may email me a copy? Thanks, Wendy.”And then I heard from Gibby Rall, himself. He wanted to explain why itwas so easy to say he’d neverthought of quitting. He said it wasbecause of his son, Bill. He has beenthe one that makes it possible. Billhadn’t played in 35 years. But fiveyears ago he came out of“Retirement” (if musicians ever retire)to take over the majority of thedrumming. “He does a great job," hesaid. Above is a photo of Bill at thedrums during Apple Affair. And more on where The Chat goes…“Robyn, Please ad Mt. His fatherwas a farmer and shortly afterErnie's birth, the family moved to Brule,WI. Ernie attended grade school for oneyear there and the family moved againto Galesville, where he finished hisschooling. He then worked for variousfarmers in the area for about ten yearsbefore Ernie and his brother bought afarm from Leo Schwartz, Ernie recallsLeo's advice to pay for the farm as soonas they could; Ernie had a savings ofabout $4,000 and his brother had about$5,000. They knew they needed moremoney, and saw an ad in the paper advertisingfor men to help with constructionin Guam. They took turns going toGuam for a year to help rebuild the villageson an island that was burnt by theJapanese. While one of them were inGuam, the other worked the farm.Ernie's brother was the first to go andErnie says he worked seven days aweek, twelve hour days for nine monthsstraight driving truck. By the time Erniewas there, there was less work, and althoughhe worked full time, he was ableto have his weekends off. Ernie remembersputting in sewer lines, light linesand water for the villages. He also recallsthe daily rain storms and says oftentimesit rained three times a day.Ernie and his brother were able to payoff their farm in five years! They raisedbeef cattle and hogs, along with 169acres of work land. When it was timefor retirement, he sold the farm toGoodwin Stetzer.Ernie enjoys reminiscing often andcomments frequently about his largefamily; his parents had fourteen childrenand Ernie was the third to the oldest.Congratulations Ernie on being ourresident of the month!Fritz TruaxFor furnishing the soda for the vendorsat the Farmer's Market this seasonThe Galesville Area Chamber of CommerceMonday Burger Specials 11am—9pmTuesday Nights -Tenderloin Tip & Au Gratin PotatoesThursday Nights -Lefse, Meatballs,Mashed Potatoes/GravyMC’s BoondocksCounty Rd M—GalesvilleOpen 7am DailyPhillip’s Chicken & Dumplings3rd Tuesday of Every MonthJoin Us Fridays 5pm—9pmAll You Can Eat Fish Fry608-582-4401The Galesville AreaChamber of CommerceWould like to sayThank You toJackie O’sFor being one of the 2007Farmer’s Market Music Donors.(Jackie O’s was accidentally omittedin the “Thank You” published in theOctober 2nd Issue of the Chat)

On the back is written 1912. Other than that, there isn’t any writing. It is a North Western Line Refrigerator car. There would have been a hole on the top of the carwhere they put the ice to keep the car cold. I am wondering.. Does anyone know? Was this Hawley’s an egg station on millroad? Does anyone know any of the men in this photo. Is it true what they say about bananas?I received an email about bananas from a friend… In short, it said that bananas maybe helpful for all of these things:Depression (B6), Anemia (High in iron), Blood Pressure: (high in potassiumyet low in salt), Brain Power (again, credit the potassium), Constipation (high infiber), Hangovers (banana shake sweetened with honey), Heartburn: (natural antacideffect), Morning Sickness, Mosquito bites (rub with inside of banana skin),Nerves( high in B vitamins) Overweight (and at work? control our blood sugarlevels by snacking on high carbohydrate foods every two hours to keep levelssteady.) Ulcers: (Soft texture and smoothness. It is the only raw fruit that can beeaten without distress in over-chronicler cases). Temperature control, SeasonalAffective Disorder (SAD): (Bananas can help SAD sufferers because they containthe natural mood enhancer tryptophan.) Smoking &Tobacco Use: (Cravings helpedwith B6, B12, potassium and magnesium) Stress (Potassium is a vital mineral)Strokes: (Research in The New England Journal of Medicine, eating bananasas part of a regular diet can cut the risk of death by strokes by as much as 40%!)Warts (Take a piece of banana skin and place it on the wart, with the yellow sideout. Carefully hold the skin in place with a plaster or surgskin, and rub directly on)So, a banana really is a natural remedy for many ills.So perhaps we can say, "A banana a day keeps the doctor away!"Picking up the 120 Pc.
