RESULTS<br />

Average age at the time of presentation was 16.91 +7.74 days.•<br />

Eight patients had bilateral involvement at presentation.<br />

Symptoms at presentation:<br />

Watering- 5 patients, Discharge- 11 patients, yellowish white spot- 31 patients<br />

Risk factors and potential associations of infection identified were: Prematurity,<br />

route of delivery, • maternal infections, systemic associations and ocular<br />

malformations.<br />

Microbiological Results:<br />

Microbiology +:30/42 eyes<br />

Smears and/or Culture positive: 31/42 eyes<br />

Smears+/Culture- : 18/42 eyes<br />

Smears-/Culture+:18/42 eyes<br />

Smear and Culture +:9/42 eyes<br />

Microbiology: 12/42 eyes<br />

Microbiological profile.<br />

Organism isolated in neonates with prolonged hospitalization: Total=16<br />

patients•<br />

Sensitivity pattern in hospital based infections:<br />

Gram positive (4) - All Sensitive to first line drug, Cefazoline<br />

Gram negative (8) - 3/8 Sensitive to first line drug Ciprofloxacin,<br />

5/8 Resistant to multiple drugs, sensitive only to Imepenam<br />

Management:<br />

Medical: All<br />

Topical antibiotic treatment-<br />

Gram positive: Fortified<br />

cefazoline<br />

Gram Negative: Ciprofloxacin<br />

Fungus: Natamycin<br />

HSV: Acyclovir ointment<br />

Systemic antibiotic- 6 patients<br />

Surgical:<br />

Lid surgery-3 eyes<br />
