Reform congregation serving about 50 individuals. Warm and welcoming,<br />
small yet mighty, COBS holds monthly Shabbat Torah services, and a<br />
robust monthly adult education program focused on his<strong>to</strong>ry, social and<br />
cultural programs <strong>as</strong> well <strong>as</strong> festival and High Holiday celebrations.<br />
Services are frequently led by the congregation members, occ<strong>as</strong>ionally<br />
a visiting rabbi, or professional lay leaders and singers. Their calendar<br />
of events can be found on their website. COBS embraces the uniquely<br />
beautiful environment of the Olympic Peninsula in its celebration of the<br />
holidays, including a Shavuot service at Hurricane Ridge, a Rosh H<strong>as</strong>hanah<br />
outdoor dawn service overlooking the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and T<strong>as</strong>hlich<br />
services at the beautiful Dungeness River.<br />
COBS celebrates family-focused festivals, including a Tu B’Shevat seder,<br />
Purim, Pesach, Sukkot, and Hanukkah. When families wish <strong>to</strong> have <strong>Jewish</strong><br />
education for their children, congregation members work <strong>to</strong> help men<strong>to</strong>r<br />
them and their parents.<br />

Bet Shira is an inclusive <strong>Jewish</strong> community for people from diverse backgrounds<br />
who seek connections with other Jews on the Olympic Peninsula,<br />
a deepening knowledge of <strong>Jewish</strong> practice and <strong>Jewish</strong> spirituality, and<br />
engagement in joyful <strong>Jewish</strong> life.<br />
The congregation is intergenerational, participa<strong>to</strong>ry, trans-denominational,<br />
and egalitarian. Erev Shabbat services and potluck dinners are held<br />
on the second Friday evening of each month (young children’s services are<br />
also available); Torah services are held monthly during the year; and there<br />
are celebrations, services, and family gatherings for the major holidays<br />
(High Holy Day services, including T<strong>as</strong>hlich at the beach, Sukkot, Simchat<br />
Torah, Hanukkah, Purim, P<strong>as</strong>sover and Shavuot). Religious school for<br />
children 4–13 years old is held once a week.<br />
The congregation gathers for the major holidays of the <strong>Jewish</strong> year and<br />
for lifecycle events of community members. Services integrate prayer,<br />
blessings, a breadth of <strong>Jewish</strong> melodies, and contemporary insights in<strong>to</strong><br />
their rich traditions. Lay leaders conduct all services. Other activities<br />
have included Torah study, Havdalah, klezmer music, Israeli dancing,<br />
and social activism in the local community. Both residents and visi<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>to</strong><br />
the peninsula are welcome <strong>to</strong> participate. Events are listed in the religious<br />
organization section of the weekly local newspaper, The Leader, and on<br />
