The Operations Department Local Area
Network has attracted a high usage rate and
become instrumental in discharging officers’ daily
duties. The system is being upgraded to cope
with increasing demand which has already
exceeded the system’s capacity. In the year, the
Department has also achieved the goal of
providing every investigator with a networked
workstation, thus enhancing the overall
communication and operational efficiency.
The Computer Forensics and Research
and Development Section has been effective in
tackling crimes related to or facilitated by the use
of computers. During the year, the Section seized
over 170 computers that were suspected to
contain evidential data or information material to
investigations. The Section is also working with
local universities and both local and overseas law
enforcement agencies in organising computer
forensics courses and setting up standard
computer investigation procedures. It is the
Department’s plan that all investigating officers
will undergo basic computer forensics training.
The accountants of the Financial
Investigation Section continue to provide
professional support to investigating groups in
asset-tracing and analyzing, interpreting and
presenting financial data and profiles. During the
year, the Section conducted 125 analyses
involving approximately 180 target persons and
companies.
