SUN CITY ANTHEM BOARD OF DIRECTORS
President’s Report
We have a new CAM. Robert Feldman became our
Community Association Manager (CAM) at the beginning
of September. He worked 25 years as a manager in the
Marriott hotel chain, followed by several years in
association management.
The selection of our CAM is made by RMI under the terms
of our Management Agreement. RMI’s President, Steven
Parker, provided our directors with an opportunity to
interview the three candidates he was considering for this
position. Six of our directors interviewed these candidates.
Each of our directors, independently concluded, Mr.
Feldman is well qualified to serve as our CAM, and he was
the first choice among the candidates we interviewed.
Mr. Feldman was also Mr. Parker’s first choice.
I want to thank Sacha Fotu for her excellent work serving
our community as our CAM. It has truly been a pleasure to
work with Sacha. She has impressed me with her positive
attitude, dedication to her job, and responsiveness to our
suggestions and comments.
Our CAM is comparable to a chief operating officer in a
business corporation. In addition to many other duties,
our CAM supervises all of our employees.
We also have a new Lifestyle Director. Maurice Talley
became our Lifestyle Director at the end of August.
Maurice is an Army vet and a native of Las Vegas. He has
13 years of property management experience, and was
most recently the Lifestyle Director at Montelago Village at
Lake Las Vegas.
Maurice will oversee the operations of the Activities,
Communications and Fitness departments. The creation of
the Lifestyle Director position is part of the reorganization
of these departments. This reorganization will reduce the
number of managers and maintain the size of our staff,
and it complies with our Board’s budget guidelines for
2012 and 2013.
Restaurant progress report. Our restaurant selection task
force selected Anthem Restaurant Partners as its first
choice for a tenant. Our Board approved these
recommendations at its August meeting. Next, our
negotiating team will finalize lease terms with Anthem
Restaurant Partners, and our auditor will analyze their
financial capabilities. If a problem arises, we will go
through the same steps with Divine Events, the second
choice for a tenant.
The restaurant survey we conducted last December told us
that 78% of our members want to have a restaurant in
Anthem Center that serves lunch and dinner. Most of our
members support giving the restaurant tenant exclusive
catering rights in our ballroom. We also learned that few of
our members believe our Association should subsidize the
restaurant operation.
We have used this survey information to guide us. The
new tenant will be required to serve lunch and dinner and
will be the only caterer for events in our ballroom. Over
the course of a five-year lease, they will be required to pay
all utilities plus enough rent to cover replacement of our
restaurant equipment and furnishings.
Important document revisions. At its August meeting,
our Board adopted a revised set of our Association’s Rules
and Regulations. We also adopted revisions to our
Association’s Design Guidelines. You should have
received a copy of these documents on a computer disc
during September. If you did not receive this or you prefer
a paper copy, please stop at the Membership Desk in
Anthem Center. I urge you to become familiar with these
documents.
Director specialization. Our Board has long followed the
custom of designating two directors as liaisons to
committees, service groups, and other areas of
responsibility. The Board establishes these assignments at
the organizational meeting in early May each year. The
current liaison assignments are posted on the SCA website.
After logging in, click on Board/Committees, Board of
Directors, Board of Directors Liaison Positions.
Directors perform the traditional liaison role with their
committees or other groups. This includes serving as a
conduit for information from the group to the Board and
the Board to the group. This specialization puts a liaison in
the best position to understand the issues faced by each
group. For example, the primary liaison to the Property
and Grounds Committee (Wade Terry) understands the
issues faced by P&G better than other directors.
We receive many questions from our members through the
message feature of the SCA website (click on Contact Us,
Board of Directors.) Our custom is for the liaison to the
relevant group to answer your question. Using the same
example, Wade answers the questions within the
responsibility of P&G. The other directors read your
question and the liaison’s response, but usually respond
only if they have something additional information to add.
Committee Reports
ARC
Second & Fourth Thursday 9:00 a.m.
Architectural Review Subcommittee
Lionel Draper - Chairperson
ARC-Committee@scacai.com
“Paint My House”
Our community is about 13 years old, and many of
our homeowners are having their homes repainted. Repainting
your home normally raises many questions and the SCA ARC
would like to help. We have created a website specifically to
provide homeowners with all the information they might need to
make their repainting decisions. This website is accessed through
the SCA website (www.sca-hoa.org.) Just look under the title
“Paint My House” in Board/Committees, Architectural review.
There are 12 Phase 1 and 25 Phase 2 color combinations, all
of which are available to the homeowner.
Once you have accessed the “Paint My House” WEB pages, you
just need to follow steps 1 thru 6 and you should get an
understanding of the requirements for repainting your home and
access to all the information you will need.
The site is organized as follows:
Step 1: READ ME FIRST, which will provide a specific
guide on using this site.
Step 2: Paint Guidelines, which provides a check-list
form and ARC requirements.
Step 3: Pulte Home Database, where you can find
specific paint information for your home.
Step 4: Color Scheme Paint Codes, will give you the
paint manufacturer’s codes for each paint color.
Please use this information because all our
house colors have faded significantly in the hot
Nevada sun and it’s risky to determine paint
colors from samples of your exterior stucco.
Step 5: Exterior Color Application Specification, which
shows how each paint color must be applied to
your home.
Step 6: Color Schemes, provides color pictures of all
Color Schemes.
Now while we are talking repaint, HOUSE NUMBERS, in many
cases have faded and are subsequently illegible and
in need of replacing or repair. This is not only a
maintenance issue but a security one. If a homeowner has to
make a 911 call, it is imperative that the emergency response
vehicle crew be able to identify the correct house immediately on
arrival in that neighborhood. House numbers are available at
Statewide Lighting, 800 E. Sahara, Las Vegas; this being the
contractor previously used by Del Webb/Pulte Homes.
many projects including print, Internet, public relations and
broadcasting, as well as updating its 2013 Strategic Plan.
This month, Channel 99 would like to recognize the talents and
efforts of Jackie McRitchie — reporter, continuity expert, scenery
and properties manager extraordinaire — who has been with the
channel since early 2006. Her steadfastness, initiative and
dedication have been an inspiration to the entire team. In
addition to her regular duties, Jackie is also credited with naming
Channel 99’s flagship program, Anthem Alive! Many thanks,
Jackie!
Channel 99 has some new show offerings, so be sure to tune in.
Board president Jim Long will be presenting his monthly Board
report, and there will also be a monthly Board Round Table.
Weekly program listings are available at the front desks of all
three rec centers. And if you would like to explore volunteer
opportunities at Channel 99, please email Bob Passaro, the
station's executive director, at rpassaro@cox.net.
Remember to look for CC meeting minutes and other important
news at www.sca-hoa.org. Just log in, choose the Board &
Committees box, and select Communications Committee from
the drop-down menu.
We value resident input and invite you to attend our monthly
meetings or email our chair with comments or suggestions.
COVENANTS COMMITTEE
The Board of Directors, as required in Article 5.2 of the By Laws,
established a Deed Restriction Enforcement Committee. At Sun
City Anthem this committee is called the “Covenants
Committee.”
The Covenants Committee is the hearing tribunal of the
Association and conducts hearings pursuant to Section 3.26 of
the By Laws and Article 7.4 of the Declaration of Covenants,
Conditions and Restrictions.
Hearings are normally scheduled once a month and they are not
open to the public or membership. A hearing is scheduled when
a case cannot be resolved during the enforcement process. The
Covenants Committee hearing tribunal reviews the information
regarding an alleged violation and determines if a violation of
the standards set forth in the Governing Documents occurred.
This committee is also responsible for imposing fines and/or
sanctions.
Following a hearing before the Covenants Committee, the
alleged violator shall have the right to appeal the decision to the
Board.
HEALTH AND FITNESS
COMMITTEE
Tuesday, October 9, 2012, 1:00 pm
Anthem Center, Bristol Room
Thursday, November 1, 2012, 1:00 p.m.
Independence Center, Penn Room
HF-Committee@scacai.com or
Patricia Carrell, Chair @ 260-3383, pcarrell22@gmail.com
Every year, the Association utilizes reserve funds to purchase
furniture and equipment that is deemed to need replacing. For
2013, the replacements will include several pieces of fitness
equipment in the Anthem Center Fitness area: cardio pieces
(e.g., treadmills, ellipticals) that are broken, too expensive to
repair, or well beyond their life-expectancy. Also included for
replacement are many pieces of strength equipment.
While working closely with the Fitness Managers on the
equipment, the Health & Fitness Committee has also
independently developed a list of criteria which we feel are
important for SCA fitness equipment. If a current piece of
equipment is failing or deficient on one or more of the priority
criteria, we recommend it being replaced; recommendations of
new pieces of equipment to be purchased as replacements are
made if they are desirable or superior on one or more of the
criteria. Here are the criteria: safety; repair history/expense;
continued durability; footprint; appropriateness for gender and
body types; age-friendly and user-friendly; body alignment for
proper use; popularity/usage demand; multi-functionality or
multi-use; fall and injury prone or resistance; joint friendliness;
ease of operation and control; speed control/stop features; ease
of entry/exit; incremental adjustments; comfort.
The Health & Fitness Committee and the Fitness
Managers have agreed on the equipment pieces to be replaced,
and are now working toward obtaining bids on replacement
pieces. Kathy Kline, Fitness Manager, will be displaying vision
boards showing the potential new pieces under consideration.
She welcomes feedback from residents via written blue cards or
face-to-face input to her.
The H&F Committee is also working with the Fitness
Department to provide a variety of mechanisms through which
residents will be able to receive orientations to the
new equipment.
We have beautiful and bountiful amenities here in SCA: the
spectacular Anthem Center, the functional Independence Center
and our newest, the Liberty Center. These three buildings house
our fitness centers, pools and spas, a theatre and sport courts
which add so much to our lifestyle. They also provide space for
our 51 clubs, some of which have dedicated rooms, courts to
play on and comfortable rooms in which to pursue their
interests.
In a community as big as ours, we need rules and
regulations to insure that residents can comfortably enjoy all
these amenities. As Chair of the Lifestyle Committee, I have
recently been involved in revising one of our governing documents
and the entire committee has been reviewing two of our
guiding documents, all of which include some rules on the use of
our amenities. Most of us involved in these projects agreed
12 Sun City Anthem • October 2012
that our intent wasn’t to add more rules. We were striving for
simplification, smoother text, elimination of duplication and a
more user-friendly format.
As we reviewed the contents of the documents, an area that came
under review was SCA Non-Resident Guest Policy. We all have
friends and relatives who visit. We love to show off our
amenities and invite guests to join us as we enjoy them. Our rules
only ask that a resident accompany a guest at all times when the
guest signs in using an SCA amenity, and it also states that a guest
cannot preclude a resident from participating in an activity. To
our credit, we have had very few problems with abuse of guest
privileges. The Lifestyle Committee has only occasionally been
called upon to study such problems. Overall, the majority of our
residents are very respectful and rarely abuse the policies we
have in place. The SCA Board ultimately determined that our
revised manuals would not contain changes to Non-Resident
Guest Policy at this time.
All of the SCA governing and guiding documents may be found
on the SCA website: www.sca-hoa.org.
The October Lifestyle meeting will be Friday, October 12,
at 9:00 a.m.
The committee welcomes Jim Jaworski as our newest member.
His term begins on September 1, 2012 and will end on August 31,
2014. Jim comes with the following background:
• Has been a resident of SCA for 7 years
• He’s a current volunteer for CH99
• He’s proficient in the use of all Microsoft software
programs, the tools used most by this committee
• He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from
Western Michigan University
• Served four years in the United States Navy
as an Electronics Technician
• Has spent his lifetime as a professional in the
construction and building industry – He has project
management expertise covering such areas as
maintenance, construction contract negotiations,
design and build, budgets, maintenance and much
more.
• His work experience is nationwide and even
includes projects located in Las Vegas such as
General Growth Properties and Turnberry Place.
The committee members feel that Jim’s background and
expertise will be extremely beneficial to the operation and
effectiveness of Properties and Grounds Committee.
The committee also wants to thank Ellen Korchek and Greg
Pardee, who have agreed to extend their current volunteerism on
our committee for an additional two-year term. We are extremely
appreciative of their work ethic, experience and knowledge that
they bring to the committee. By extending their term, they also
foster continuity as we deal with our task of reviewing and
analyzing information to make recommendations to the
Board of Directors.
As a reminder, the mission of the Properties and Grounds
Committee is to support the Board of Directors and serves
as a communication link with the residents in the management
and development of our common amenities. We meet on the
Tuesday preceding the second Thursday of every month at 10:00
a.m. in the Arlington Room at Anthem Center. Residents are
encouraged to attend to offer comments on our agenda items or
voice other concerns regarding our common amenities.

Facilities/Landscaping
October
~ President Harry S. Truman made the first presidential telecast on October 5, 1947
Even though we are now into
the month of October, we still
have days when the weather is
warm; but it is actually a good
time to start thinking about the
coming winter months and the
effect the changing weather
will have on our landscaped
areas. Beginning October 1, we
are now able to water during
any hour of the day per SNWA
(Southern Nevada Water
Authority) guidelines. SNWA
will allow this for the rest of this year. Throughout
the rest of October we may still run our irrigation on
Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
Because of the SNWA’s new hours and for weather
reasons, all of our landscapers will be resetting our
irrigation clocks to water at safer times for the fall
and winter months. Water running too early in the
morning creates the risk of someone slipping or
falling when water forms winter frost or ice because
of runoff to the sidewalk or street. No matter how
carefully the direction of a sprinkler head is set, it is
not unusual for a sudden windy spurt to override the
setting. Keep this in mind when setting your
irrigation clock, because of the late afternoon winds
that are so prevalent in the Anthem area.
As most of you already know, all of our landscape
maintenance is contracted with three companies:
US Landscape – all three Centers and Pinnacle
Village; Valley Crest Landscape – all our streetscapes
and open areas; and Superior Landscape – duplex
homes, often referred to as Villas. These companies
all provide us a schedule, in accordance with our
contracts with them, for the year’s landscape
maintenance program. Sometimes it is necessary for
our landscapers to work on an area earlier or later
than it is scheduled, due to weather conditions.
Heavy rains or extreme windy spells create
additional debris. When this happens, crews are
unable to work and the debris caused by these
storms necessitates the need for maintenance
cleanup earlier than scheduled. Also, the extra water
from the rain encourages a sudden growth spurt
which also creates the need to trim earlier than
scheduled.
In addition to all the streetscape re-landscaping
which was described in last month’s article, we have
also been working on our duplex homes located in
Model Village, Clubhouse, Canyon Crest, High Mesa
and Mountain View Villages. Each of these Villages
has had plants or trees added as needed. The front,
back and side yards of the duplex units are part of
one large parcel for each street, which is an
Association-owned common area. When the duplex
homes were built, the developer established a plan
for the landscape in each Village. Therefore, when
re-landscaping our choice of plants or trees needs to
coordinate with the original theme to maintain a
coordinated look for all the duplex homes.
The featured photo
this month is of
duplex homes in
Clubhouse Village.
As you can see, they
blend in so well with
our single family
homes that it is hard
to tell they are duplex
homes.
With the prime goal of
keeping our community beautiful, we regularly walk
our grounds and interact with the crews from three
landscape companies that maintain our outdoor
areas. These areas include: the grounds around the
Centers, SCA streetscapes; desert re-veg areas;
the common areas and gate maintenance in Pinnacle
Village; the landscape around the duplex homes;
and rock drains within our community.
We always welcome the opportunity to speak with
the homeowners. If you have questions,
comments or concerns regarding any of our
properties, please don’t hesitate to contact me at:
christine.noble@scacai.com or 614-5863.
Thank you,
ANTHEM AUTHORS
I love being a writer; what I can’t stand is the paperwork.
Peter De Vries
It’s been a busy time for our writers. Tony Sabatello has
just published his book, My Kind of Town: Excerpts of a
Copper’s Life. My Kind of Town chronicles the real life
experiences of a Chicago cop during the early 1960s. His
brief career with the Chicago Police Department was spent
in the Patrol Division and in the Traffic Division, which
enables him to provide different perspectives on being a
“copper” in the Windy City. Meanwhile, Dick Rose
received a royalty check (a small one) from Amazon for the
sale of copies of his book, Tarnished Brass Curtain: A
Novel of Vietnam.
Both of these books are available from Amazon in soft
cover or as an e-book.
Our readings at the meetings continue. Donna Mabry read
the last chapter of her Las Vegas-based novel, C.O.D.
Robert Murphy read a chapter from his novel, Bear Claw. A
story about the building of the transcontinental railroad,
the inter-relationships of the Native Americans, the
Chinese and Irish laborers, and the villainous uncle of one
of the Irishmen.
Beth Medhus continued reading from her memoir of
growing up in a Hungarian family in Canada, Stories My
Mother Told Me.
These are examples of the new and exciting (and yes fun)
things Anthem Authors experience. You don’t have be a
writer to attend; although even if you don’t think you’re a
writer, you might be surprised. Anthem Authors meetings
feature exercises, contests and tips designed to inspire and
improve your writing. Memoirs, fantasy, mystery and
poetry all have been explored and there are also many
contests to be entered. Memoirs remain a great vehicle for
organizing your thoughts and experiences to pass on to
your families.
Our annual membership dues are $10.00. Our website is
www.AnthemAuthors.com where you can read some of
our writings or contact Elaine Stubbs at 361-8529 for more
information. You can also call our President, Richard Wine
BOOK
Book Club Meeting – Thursday, October 18, 2:00 p.m. -
3:00 p.m., in the Penn/Nelson Rooms at Independence
Center.
Each month, the SCA Book Club reads and discusses a
book. In October, we'll be discussing Daughter of Fortune by
Isabel Allende. Left in a basket at the doorstep of the
Sommers family, Eliza is brought up as their adopted
daughter in the heart of Valparaiso's
well-to-do British colony. She falls in
love with a poor poet who leaves
Chile in 1848 to seek his fortune in
California's Gold Rush. Determined
to follow him, Eliza stows away on a
ship bound for San Francisco. What
begins as a search for her loved one
becomes a journey of self discovery
and a tale of people from a variety of
backgrounds seeking their fortune
in a land which seems filled with
limitless opportunity.
Our November book is Dreams of Joy by Lisa See; the
December selection is Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. We
will vote on our 2013 selections at our October meeting.
SCA Book Club members volunteer at the SCA library. The
library is located at Independence Center and is available
to all SCA residents on the honor system. The collection
includes fiction and nonfiction, paperback and hardcover.
Book donations are welcomed, but due to space
constraints, only books published in the past eight to ten
years are accepted.
The Book Club usually meets on the third Thursday of
each month. Guests are welcome at any meeting. For those
who wish to join, dues are $5.
Please direct any questions to Susan Hernandez at
sehernandez1@gmail.com.
enjoyed the experience of creating your own clay
“masterpiece” but think you’d like to, this is the club for
you. Our members paint, glaze and fire pieces that are
already molded, or some start from scratch with just a
block of clay. We have a formal orientation for all new
members. If you think you’d enjoy creating a special piece
as a gift or have plans to decorate your home and yard
with your creations, all this is possible if you become a
member of the Ceramics Club. The Ceramics Room in the
Anthem Center is available to members every day but
Wednesday mornings, and monitors are available on
Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9:00 a.m. to noon and
OPERA
A new “Carmen” for the Met.
Richard Eyre (Producer of this 2010
production) has had no shortage of
success directing women in largerthan-life
roles, both on stage and
on screen. As complete and
unforgettable as such real and fictional
characters as Iris Murdoch, Hedda
Gabber, Miss Adelaide, Violetta
Valery, and even Mary Poppins may
be Bizet’s Carmen. It is something else
entirely. A sexual outsider embroiled
in a furious face-off with death.
“Carmen would say her character is fate,” Eyre has
remarked. “But how much freedom is she going to be
allowed, considering she’s a woman who is going to live
her life as she chooses? Because she is a gypsy, she’s
continuously unacceptable – unacceptable, indeed, by
definition.”
The members of Opera Lovers Club invite all residents to
join us to view this Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, chorus
and ballet, starring Elina Garanca, Roberto Alagna,
Barbara Prittoli, Teddy Tahu Rhodes and Keith Miller.
Guest fee is $1 per meeting. Annual membership (January
through December) is $10.
out of the area. The first adventure, led by Bob & Willie
Platts and Doc & Vera Miller, took 20 rigs to Rocky Point,
Mexico. Everyday activities included swimming in the
wonderful waters of the Sea of Cortez and beach games.
Card games included Mah Jongg and Texas Hold-Em.
John Strassner tried his hand at kayaking in the water and
was quite a sight to behold. Like all trips, the pot lucks
were wonderful, especially the Steak and Shrimp Feast.
The second October trip took us to Albuquerque, NM for
the International Balloon Festival. Dave & Sharon Smith
led this rally. The colorful balloons numbered over 30 and
were a sight to behold, especially the “Night-Glow.”
Future scheduled trips include Winterfest in Laughlin,
Nevada, the Branson-West festivities in Mesquite, Nevada,
our annual March trip to Phoenix for baseball Spring
Training and our April rally to Willow Beach at Lake Mead
for water activities and possible fishing for the legendary
Nevada “Marlin.” Stay tuned!
Our mission is to promote fellowship among Sun City
Anthem residents who share an interest in traveling
together in their recreational vehicles from Class A to tent
trailers.
Our meetings are held at 4:00 p.m. on the last Tuesday of
the month (except December, June and July) in the Penn
Room at Independence Center. If you are interested in a
great time and making new friends, please come to a
meeting or contact President George Ormsby at 492-2542.
Club Information
The Scrabble Plus Club meets on Friday afternoons from
1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the Emerson/Franklin Room at
Anthem Center. Anyone not a member is welcome to join
us as a guest for a friendly game of Scrabble. If you want to
join, membership is open to all SCA residents for only $10
a year.
of the Day
The Scrabble “Word of the Day” is COWLING. This is a
removable cover of a vehicle or aircraft engine.
As the times change, so do the rules in acceptable words in
Scrabble. Over 3,000 new words have been added to
the official dictionary, including several slang terms
like “thang” and “grrl.” Turning the most heads is the
inclusion of “innit,” a condensation of “isn’t it.” Two new
“Q” words have been added that don’t require a “U.”
“QIN” is a Chinese zither with strings stretched across a
flat box while “FIQH” is an expansion of Islamic sharia
law. The push is to make the game more relevant to a
generation that’s more familiar with “Words with
Friends.” The Scrabble Plus Club may not recognize these
words yet. Until they are printed in the dictionaries used
by the club, these words may still be on the outer edges.
Let’s face it, it might be fun to earn 12 points by laying
down “blingy,” but you certainly won’t impress the
person across that table that has just dropped “Quixotry.”
That’s some thang to keep in mind – innit?
Club Information
The holiday season is fast approaching, and the members
of the Sewing and Quilting Club are ready as always for all
the holiday fun and traditions. Members are hard at work
sewing, quilting, crocheting and knitting items for
upcoming craft fairs and other community functions that
the season brings. Our seasonal items such as placemats
and table runners for autumn and winter holidays, as well
as aprons and tree skirts are on display. Come into the
sewing room and be impressed by the variety and
craftsmanship of our items. Some of the profits are
donated to charitable organizations and some goes to an
elementary school that has been chosen by the group. We
have shared interest groups that support these endeavors
and perhaps one or more might be of interest to you.
We have opportunities for fun and friendship. Our sewing
room is available to members for use any time there is a
monitor. We have member appreciation activities as well
as a holiday luncheon in December. We offer classes for
members who want to learn new skills or improve on
existing skills. Our classes range from learning to use the
sewing machine, learning to sew and quilt and learning
how to knit and crochet. We have classes for more
experienced sewers as well. All classes are taught by
members who volunteer their time and talents. If you are
interested in our group, please check out our website
www.scasq.org. We are looking forward to meeting you.
SHANGHAI RUMMY (PUSH)
Mondays 10:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Emerson/Franklin Room
If you enjoy cards that allow social conversation as you
play a few hours, please join us on Mondays for Push
(officially titled Shanghai Rummy.) Push is a variation of
gin rummy, originating in China. The play consists of
seven rounds of progressive sets of sets and runs, played
by 3 or 4 people using 3 decks of cards. The number of
cards held becomes quite a handful, so most players use
card racks, sold by the club.
We welcome new members, please join us. If you are new
to the game, please call President Shirley LaChance at
837-9924 to arrange a quick 10-minute instruction. Dues
are $5.00 a year. The monies go toward our annual Holiday
Party held the first Monday of December each year. This
year's Holiday Party will be held at Ventano Restaurant,
but you have to be a member to attend, so come in and join
now. The weather is cooler and the people are nice and
yes, even couples play.
great way to meet
other singles and
socialize.
Many shared interest
groups are available such as games, dance, cooking,
bowling, fine dining, weekly soirees and breakfast and
lunch groups. Upcoming events include our very popular
October 27. Costumes are encouraged, but not mandatory
along with great food, fun games and contests. Our
fabulous Holiday Party is scheduled for December 8, at the
SOFTBALL
Are you looking to start a new exercise program? Well here
is a great way to give your body a fun wake up call every
Tuesday and Friday morning.
During the fall months, warm ups begin at 8:30 a.m. at
Anthem Hills field, behind the Del Webb School on
Reunion. Toss the ball around, take a few swings, shag a
few balls and get to meet some of the members. We have a
nice mix of retired and semi-retired men and women who
enjoy the game, along with a little “razzing” here and there.
At 9:00 a.m. or so we “choose up” teams’. This keeps
the atmosphere more relaxed than set teams. It truly is
a good time.
Now you might think that you are not sure that the “old”
body can still take it. Hmmmmm, we have all felt that at
one time or another. No need to worry. Come join us as a
guest for up to three times, you then make the choice of
whether or not you would like to join. The club is open to
all residents of Sun City Anthem. Yearly dues are $35.00.
Our holiday party will be on Sunday, October 21, 5:30 p.m.
in the Delaware Room at the Anthem Recreational Center.
If you would like any more information, please contact our
President, JP Molfetta at jpmvegas@yahoo.com or call
Hope to see you at the field.
WOMEN’S GOLF
Don’t forget the 3rd Annual Mixed Ryder Cup, combining
members of both the Women’s and Men’s Golf Clubs on
October 17 & 18. The series is tied at one win each for the
Revere Riders (the Red Team) and Paul’s Patriots (the Blue
Team.) Gary Cranford of UBS, who sponsors both the
Men’s and Women’s Golf Clubs, will host a
pre-tournament Challenger’s Cocktail Party on October
16. The tournament dates changed after the September
article by one day. Hopefully, all of you are signed up for
this popular and fun event.
Our Club Championship is also scheduled this month on
October 30 & 31. One round will be played on the
Lexington and the other on the Concord. An awards
luncheon will follow the second day’s round. The
tournament is flighted, so all members should plan to
participate.
After the summer break, our regular monthly meetings
resumed in September. Our monthly meetings are
normally held right after golf the first Tuesday of each
month. You can earn an extra point towards playing in the
Troon Cup, learn of upcoming events, get golf questions
answered and learn about rules of golf by attending these
meetings. Each month we reveal another “UBS Player of
the Month,” sponsored by Gary Cranford. In addition, it is
a good way to get to know and socialize with the other
ladies in our Club.
Members should be receiving their Holiday Party
invitation in October, along with their 2013 statement for
dues, hole-in-one pot, and Concord and Lexington
Ringers. All members are welcome to attend the Holiday
Party whether you play in the 18-hole group, the 9iners, or
haven’t played in any of the play days. The Holiday Party
Committee has special plans in the works for our party in
December, so be sure to get your reservation in.
The 9iners have changed their weekly play day from
Thursday afternoons to Tuesday afternoons. This enables
the 9iners to come early for lunch to join the 18-hole
players after their round. Then the 9iners will head to the
Concord.
SCAWGC welcomes new members for 18-hole play on
Tuesday mornings and 9-hole play on Tuesday afternoons.
Please visit the website at scawgc.homestead.com or ask
for information in the Revere Pro Shop.
WOODCHIPS
Some of the more popular projects completed by members
of SCA Woodchips woodworking club are large and small
furniture items suitable for use in SCA homes. Murphy
beds for bedrooms and casitas are popular for their ability
to fold up and provide space for multi-purpose use of the
room. Small furniture items, such as end tables, coffee
tables and magazine racks are always in demand and can
be found under construction on a typical work day in
our shop.
Larger furniture items including beds, bookcases and
chester drawers can be a challenge to build but many
members regularly take on that challenge with high
quality results. The pictures below show veteran
woodworker Phil Menser with his recently completed
barrister’s book case. It is built of walnut with raised-panel
construction and glass-front doors. It has a clear finish that
brings out the natural beauty of the walnut.
Woodchips membership is open to all SCA residents for
only $25.00 a year. After mandatory safety training, you
will be on your way as a woodworker. Our shop, which is
located at the rear of Independence Center, is open
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for member training
and shop projects; and Thursday through Saturday, 9:00
a.m. – 2:00 p.m. for general member use. Check the
Woodchips website at: www.scawoodchips.org for
information on the club and pictures of many of our
members’ projects. Stop by the shop or contact Dan
McLean at 896-6896 or danielmclean@msn.com for
information on becoming a member.
Thanks to the wonders of modern
neuromuscular dentistry, you can
have dentures that restore your face
to a more youthful appearance. In
addition to offering optimal function
and stability, as well as a more natural
feel, this fully customized solution
improves the muscle tone in your jaw
and adequately supports your lips
and cheeks, creating younger-looking
facial fullness where there was once
a prematurely aged, sunken-in effect.
With a softer chin and fewer apparent
wrinkles, many of our satisfied
customers report that friends and
family have been asking if they’ve
had a face-lift! With this cutting-edge
technology, you will enjoy complete
comfort, greater confidence and a
beautiful smile. Ask Dr. Hendrickson if
restorative dentures are right for you
and make a worthwhile investment in
yourself today.
