WOMEN’S GOLF
Don’t forget the 3rd Annual Mixed Ryder Cup, combining
members of both the Women’s and Men’s Golf Clubs on
October 17 & 18. The series is tied at one win each for the
Revere Riders (the Red Team) and Paul’s Patriots (the Blue
Team.) Gary Cranford of UBS, who sponsors both the
Men’s and Women’s Golf Clubs, will host a
pre-tournament Challenger’s Cocktail Party on October
16. The tournament dates changed after the September
article by one day. Hopefully, all of you are signed up for
this popular and fun event.
Our Club Championship is also scheduled this month on
October 30 & 31. One round will be played on the
Lexington and the other on the Concord. An awards
luncheon will follow the second day’s round. The
tournament is flighted, so all members should plan to
participate.
After the summer break, our regular monthly meetings
resumed in September. Our monthly meetings are
normally held right after golf the first Tuesday of each
month. You can earn an extra point towards playing in the
Troon Cup, learn of upcoming events, get golf questions
answered and learn about rules of golf by attending these
meetings. Each month we reveal another “UBS Player of
the Month,” sponsored by Gary Cranford. In addition, it is
a good way to get to know and socialize with the other
ladies in our Club.
Members should be receiving their Holiday Party
invitation in October, along with their 2013 statement for
dues, hole-in-one pot, and Concord and Lexington
Ringers. All members are welcome to attend the Holiday
Party whether you play in the 18-hole group, the 9iners, or
haven’t played in any of the play days. The Holiday Party
Committee has special plans in the works for our party in
December, so be sure to get your reservation in.
The 9iners have changed their weekly play day from
Thursday afternoons to Tuesday afternoons. This enables
the 9iners to come early for lunch to join the 18-hole
players after their round. Then the 9iners will head to the
Concord.
SCAWGC welcomes new members for 18-hole play on
Tuesday mornings and 9-hole play on Tuesday afternoons.
WOODCHIPS
Some of the more popular projects completed by members
of SCA Woodchips woodworking club are large and small
furniture items suitable for use in SCA homes. Murphy
beds for bedrooms and casitas are popular for their ability
to fold up and provide space for multi-purpose use of the
room. Small furniture items, such as end tables, coffee
tables and magazine racks are always in demand and can
be found under construction on a typical work day in
our shop.
Larger furniture items including beds, bookcases and
chester drawers can be a challenge to build but many
members regularly take on that challenge with high
quality results. The pictures below show veteran
woodworker Phil Menser with his recently completed
barrister’s book case. It is built of walnut with raised-panel
construction and glass-front doors. It has a clear finish that
brings out the natural beauty of the walnut.
Woodchips membership is open to all SCA residents for
only $25.00 a year. After mandatory safety training, you
will be on your way as a woodworker. Our shop, which is
located at the rear of Independence Center, is open
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for member training
and shop projects; and Thursday through Saturday, 9:00
a.m. – 2:00 p.m. for general member use. Check the
Woodchips website at: www.scawoodchips.org for
information on the club and pictures of many of our
members’ projects. Stop by the shop or contact Dan
McLean at 896-6896 or danielmclean@msn.com for
information on becoming a member.
