Fairfield County<br />

Fairfield County <strong>Historic</strong>al Society<br />

Ms. Lyles <strong>and</strong> Clyde McFadden marked <strong>the</strong> location <strong>of</strong> 28 mill sites <strong>in</strong> Fairfield County.<br />

Their locations were derived from <strong>Mill</strong>’s Atlas (1825), <strong>the</strong> 1876 Elk<strong>in</strong>s Map <strong>of</strong> Fairfield<br />

County, <strong>and</strong> personal knowledge. At least fifteen <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mills have archeological features.<br />

Laurens County<br />

Mr. Cooper marked <strong>the</strong> location <strong>of</strong> 10 mills on <strong>the</strong> Laurens County highway map <strong>and</strong> sent<br />

<strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g documents: a list <strong>of</strong> historic sites on Reedy River that <strong>in</strong>cludes Boyd’s <strong>Mill</strong><br />

on highway 252 <strong>and</strong> Culbertson’s <strong>Mill</strong> on Ekom Beach Road; a newspaper article on<br />

Flem<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Mill</strong> on Beaverdam Creek <strong>in</strong> Lanford, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g photographs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mill ru<strong>in</strong>s <strong>and</strong><br />

iron p<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> rocks (July 8, 1981 Laurens Advertiser); xeroxed photographs <strong>of</strong> Musgrove<br />

History Items Found Recently” discuss<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> new (1820) stone storehouse <strong>and</strong> new dam<br />

built below <strong>the</strong> “present” mill dam on Little River (April 10, 1963 Laurens Advertiser) <strong>and</strong><br />

six 4 x 6 <strong>in</strong>ch xeroxed photographs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mill ru<strong>in</strong>s.<br />

McCormick County<br />

Mr. Edwards depicted <strong>the</strong> location <strong>of</strong> seven mills on <strong>the</strong> McCormick County highway<br />

map: McComb’s <strong>Mill</strong>, Sh<strong>in</strong>burg’s <strong>Mill</strong>, Price’s <strong>Mill</strong>, Parks’ <strong>Mill</strong>, Chamberla<strong>in</strong>’s Mil,<br />

Calhoun’s <strong>Mill</strong> <strong>and</strong> Cade’s <strong>Mill</strong>. He also provided photographs <strong>of</strong> McComb’s <strong>Mill</strong>,<br />

Sh<strong>in</strong>burg’s <strong>Mill</strong>, Price’s <strong>Mill</strong> (six photos <strong>and</strong> a h<strong>and</strong>-t<strong>in</strong>ted postcard), Calhoun’s <strong>Mill</strong> (with<br />

a 1981 newspaper article about its nom<strong>in</strong>ation to <strong>the</strong> National Register), <strong>and</strong> excerpts from<br />

his book The Mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> McCormick County, concern<strong>in</strong>g Price’s <strong>Mill</strong> <strong>and</strong> Calhoun’s <strong>Mill</strong>.<br />

Oconee County<br />

Ms. Bahnsen supplied <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g: a newspaper article <strong>and</strong> photograph <strong>of</strong> Romeys grist<br />

mill on Beaver Creek– built <strong>in</strong> 1953 <strong>and</strong> powered with an overshot wheel; a photograph<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Silas Butts mill at Brasstown <strong>and</strong> a photograph <strong>of</strong> Sheds <strong>Mill</strong> on Long Creek<br />

(source: The Heritage <strong>of</strong> Oconee County, Vol. I, 1868-1995. Blue Ridge Arts Council,<br />

Walsworth Publish<strong>in</strong>g Co., Waynesville, NC); a pamphlet on Hagood <strong>Mill</strong> <strong>in</strong> Pickens<br />

County; <strong>and</strong> a copy <strong>of</strong> The High Falls Story, by Nora Nimmons Field (1968) which<br />

discusses <strong>the</strong> John Gresham <strong>Mill</strong> on Little River. This was quite an enterprise as revealed<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> advertisement (1839) to sell <strong>the</strong> mill: “<strong>the</strong> falls improved by flour<strong>in</strong>g mill, corn mill,<br />

rice mill, sawmill, cotton g<strong>in</strong>, threash<strong>in</strong>g (sic) mach<strong>in</strong>e, corn sheller, lath for turn<strong>in</strong>g iron,<br />

lath for turn<strong>in</strong>g wood. Also good store-house, good smith shop, good dwell<strong>in</strong>g house.”
