<strong>Summary</strong><br />

Research demonstrates that <strong>the</strong> mill on Peters Creek was one <strong>of</strong> about 60 that operated <strong>in</strong><br />

Spartanburg County dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> late n<strong>in</strong>eteenth <strong>and</strong> early twentieth centuries. Archival evidence<br />

<strong>in</strong>dicates that this mill did custom work for <strong>the</strong> local farmers who would br<strong>in</strong>g corn, wheat,<br />

cotton, <strong>and</strong> timber for process<strong>in</strong>g. The mill became a focal po<strong>in</strong>t for <strong>the</strong> local community <strong>and</strong> a<br />

post <strong>of</strong>fice was located nearby, named for <strong>the</strong> miller/l<strong>and</strong>owner (Poole). Because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nature <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> mill, carry<strong>in</strong>g out multiple functions, <strong>the</strong> architectural features are more substantial than most<br />

mills, with a massive dam, <strong>and</strong> well built masonry foundations, bulkheads <strong>and</strong> reta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g walls. The<br />

mill also employed <strong>the</strong> latest technology, a turb<strong>in</strong>e, to run <strong>the</strong> mach<strong>in</strong>ery.<br />

The f<strong>in</strong>al mill on Peters Creek was <strong>in</strong> service for about 50 years. Three people,<br />

Wash<strong>in</strong>gton Poole, I.R. Padgett, <strong>and</strong> Dr. J.A. Mart<strong>in</strong> each owned <strong>the</strong> mill for about 15 years <strong>and</strong><br />

no doubt modified it <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> mach<strong>in</strong>ery as conditions dictated. The ab<strong>and</strong>onment <strong>and</strong> demise <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> mill, <strong>and</strong> many o<strong>the</strong>rs across <strong>the</strong> region, is tied to circumstances beyond <strong>the</strong> control <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

operators: <strong>the</strong> economic downturns after <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>vasion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cotton boll weevil <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 1920s, <strong>the</strong><br />

ab<strong>and</strong>onment <strong>of</strong> farml<strong>and</strong>, <strong>the</strong> out-migration <strong>of</strong> agricultural workers, <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> mills<br />

powered by hydroelectricity, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Great Depression <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 1930s.<br />
