Greenville County<br />

2. Gilreath’s <strong>Mill</strong> (also known as Heller’s, Bruce’s <strong>and</strong> Taylor’s <strong>Mill</strong>). Highway 101 near Greer.<br />
Built <strong>in</strong> 1812, this orig<strong>in</strong>ally was a grist mill. It was converted to a flour mill after 1890. The 1880<br />
manufactur<strong>in</strong>g census lists a center discharge wheel as <strong>the</strong> power source, but a very large vertical<br />
wheel (undershot?) is depicted <strong>in</strong> modern photographs (alpha.furmon.edu).<br />

2. Sheriff’s <strong>Mill</strong> Complex on Brushy Creek <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Zion Community.<br />
The present mill was built ca. 1881, replac<strong>in</strong>g an earlier grist mill. A sawmill, no longer st<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g,<br />
was part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mill complex. The current concrete dam was constructed ca. 1900 <strong>and</strong> replaced an<br />
earlier log dam. The mill operated <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> 1950s. It was powered by a very wide overshot wheel.<br />
The 1880 census lists this as “Willis” wheel.<br />
