Minutes of the June 25th, 2008 Chicagoland Sports Car
Club General Membership and BOD Meeting.
Attendees: Rich Cwik, Frank Riemann, Gary Weis, Frank
Hartl, Mike Schindlbeck, Alden Wells, Bill Boesen, Lois
Berg-Wells, Larry Best, Jay Busse.
Drinks and food ordered at 7:20 pm.
President Bill calls meeting to order at 8:09 pm.
Refer to minutes to delete “MC can’t get off their butts…” by
Downshift editor. Move to approve minutes as printed (BB)-
2nd (MS)-pass.
Treasurer’s Report: (LB) - We’re down about $674.00 from
this time last month. Membership is currently at 75- (Jay has
renewed his membership)! The 50th Anniversary stickers
were a big part of last month’s expenses ($480.00). Move to
approve the Treasurer’s Report (FH) 2nd (RC) - pass.
Old Business: The 50th Anniversary stickers are now
available- various proposals to distribute them via Tech/Impound,
or using the MC mailing list to mail them to comp
license holders were discussed.
The September 13&14 Meadowdale weekend was then
discussed. A few sample giveaways were passed around
for comment, (the foam race car with “CSCC-racing.com”
on the wing was cute). We’ll have the canopy, the banner,
tables, Frank Hartl’s car, and giveaways. Alden and Frank
will be there all day, but we still need volunteers to staff the
booth. Larry will contact Bill Wildt, to see if he’s interested
in covering the event. Bill said it’s on the fringe of Fox TV
viewing area, so it’s unlikely that he can get a crew there.
A suggestion was made to have a “Watch the man build a
race motor- live” was made. Some discussion about showing
the prototype marketing video- as well as trying to obtain
some old Meadowdale, Lynndale, BFR footage (or any old
MC video footage, for that matter), was made, and then discussed
further. CSCC board will contact Bill Martin to see if
we can obtain some of the old LSSCC video footage.
New Business (LB)- That Loooong Race- BB volunteers as
Race Co-Chairman, BUT WE STILL NEED A CHIEF REG-
ISTRAR. Jay will manufacture the trophies, and, probably,
author the poster. What should we give to the workers this
year? Ideas and/or suggestions to the Board, please. Brief
discussion about getting the wives more involved (like the
Austin-Healey club).
Website Update: We still need to update the design and
content of the website, but the only people working on it
are also the Race Chairman and the Race Co- Chairman,
so the website is more or less on the back burner , unless
someone steps up.
Contest BoD Meting Information: (GW)- Attendance at
the first two races was down a little, but we need to keep
tabs on entries, so we can set a realistic entry fee for That
Loooong Race.
The 50th Anniversary party WILL NOT be held at That
Loooong Race.
July 18, August 13, and September 17 are open track days
at BFR.
Auto-X is changing a bunch of rules- but not until the next
MC board meeting.
June CSCC Meeting continued
SR and SRF have been moved back into their original race
group for the remainder of the season.
Grid will be checking for the (mandatory) display of MC stickers
on all cars.
Supplementals will be re-written to eliminate the “Skip Barber”
license clause, since they don’t issue licenses at Skip
Barber schools.
MC is finally beginning to replace their radios.
OPEN SOLICITATION FROM THE DOWNSHIFT EDITOR
Send me your poor, your tired old technical or editorial articles,
or any old publishable drivel, PLEASE! We need member
input (an article, some pictures, whatever, maybe an ad
from the Rangoon Balloon Werks, or even an article about
the 1906 Wicker bodied Tickford.
Then we had a discussion about getting TV guys interested
in Racing (specifically MC racing, like Bob Wallace in the old
days).
A brief discussion about DeLoreans (I don’t remember
why).
MC 50th Anniversary Planning
The MC 50th Anniversary celebration will be held on the
September 20-21 weekend at BFR during the event sponsored
by SCSCC. As part of the celebration there will be
a multimedia presentation of the 50 years of MC shown on
Saturday evening September 20th. The presentation will not
only be shown that evening, but will also be available on disk
to the event attendees.
In order to make this a truly memorable occasion for all and
to better document our MC history I am asking that you put
out a request to all your club members, plus anyone else
you are aware of that has MC memorabilia, to send me all
photos, videos, and other print material that is significant to
MC history e.g. photos/vids of ghost tracks, lists of club officers,
lists of champions, old logos, pix of the funniest things
you’ve ever seen in MC. Get the word out at your club meetings
plus put a little blurb in your club newsletter; the more
people that contribute the better the presentation and celebration
will be. Also, please remember that your individual
club’s history is part of MC history, too.
The celebration will be here before we know it, so please get
your contributions for the presentation in to me by no later
than August 31st, so the person who has to put everything
together has a fighting chance of getting it done on time.
If you have any questions about what to send please let me
know. I’m looking for quantity as well as quality!
MEETING OF MIDWESTERN COUNCIL BOARDS – June 12, 2008
Regular Executive and Contest Boards meeting, Sam’s Ristorante, Rockford IL. President Cassaro called the meeting to order at
8:08 PM. It was ascertained that a quorum was present. All officers were present except Treasurer Harlan and clubs represented
as follows: CSCC – Best, Weis; FTR - 0; GLSCC - Schley; LSCC – Martin, Willert; MSCC - 0; NSSCC - Serra; SCSCC - Lewis;
SCCR – P.Green, Rehberg. M(Schley) & 2(P.Green) to approve the minutes of the May meeting as printed. Pass.
Treasurer’s Report: No written report due to Harlan’s flooded basement; her computer may be salvageable. A novice driver from
the first school bounced a check. In spite of many promises, he still has not made good. The policy is that his club is responsible
for collecting the debt and forwarding it to the sponsoring body. The driver is ineligible to run further events until restitution is
made.
OLD BUSINESS
- May/June attendance: The AX events averaged 100 and W-W averaged 120. At Autobahn there were 96 AX and 92 W-W drivers.
Thanks go to all Autobahn event chiefs, especially Jackson, for being able to be flexible and make decisions during an iffy weather
weekend.
- 50th Anniversary Party: There was a meeting at the last BFR event. The committee is looking at SCCR or SC BFR events. It
was suggested to have it in conjunction with the banquet, which is a possibility. Next meeting will be at the BFR MSCC event on
June 28/29.
NEW BUSINESS
- BFR Track Days: 7/18, 8/13 and 9/17 are the dates. MC will partner with BFR, and Fosbender is working on event coordination.
MC instructors will staff the events, which are similar to lapping days with limited passing on the track. Cassaro expressed
concern that the tech sheets for the dates use MC specs, which might incur MC liability (BFR is providing insurance). M(Wheeler)
& 2(several) to take the MC references off the sheets but leave the text. Pass. Cassaro will work with Fosbender and the track to
remove any inference that the MC is in charge. Instructor perks will include substantial track time.
- J.Boldt on licensing procedures: It seems that some clubs’ membership lists sent to Schneider do not distinguish between
renewals and old members, so non-current members have been issued comp. licenses. It was suggested to revert to the former
procedure of not putting names on the list without payment. Boldt will write up and present this at the next meeting. Clubs must
update membership often and regularly, especially at the beginning of the year.
- There was a request that BFR do some improvement on the sound control area, which is wet and buggy.
COMPETITION
OLD BUSINESS
- Autocross Committee Report: Last meeting’s proposals were redone. Wording changing “Time Attack” to “High Speed Autocross”
was approved. Changes in AX instructor rules and procedures were taken to clubs. One main point is that a list of certified
instructors should be published annually. The new T&S system is outstanding.
- Race Staff Committee Report: No committee, no report.
- Steward Committee Report: The changes in the formula groupings were rescinded. At Autobahn, SRen was put back in the small
formula group, and FF/CF were returned to the large formula group. Next meeting is June 18 at Sam’s Pizza in Rockton.
- The Autobahn event had a very small VH turnout partly due to not mailing entries (electronic entries were used). It may be
worthwhile for clubs to actually send out entry forms to non-MC drivers. Post cards should be adequate, but that doesn’t seem to
be the case.
- Toyo Tire contingency seems to be successful.
NEW BUSINESS
- The question was raised as to when cars are weighed. It seems to be random. Generally, if there is no contingency program,
no cars are required to be weighed.
- There is no written agreement between MC and SCCA regarding either group honoring the other’s driver sanctions. This will be
explored further.
- It was noted that some cars manage to get out on the track without MC stickers. Grid needs to be more vigilant, since annual
tech sometimes doesn’t catch the lack of stickers or follow up on it.
- Supplementary regulations: MC supps should be eliminate Skip Barber licenses, since they don’t exist.
At least one club is using old BFR supps. BFR requested the removal of wording that refers to coin-operated showers and arcade
games.
- MC radios at Autobahn: More are needed at A.South and in general some need to be replaced. Martin will check on costs. MC
radios are not compatible with track radios, so it’s one or the other, but not both.
- Entry forms for the next BFR event don’t show W-W tech hours for Sat. It’s the responsibility of the club to work it out with tech
people. Tech is willing to be open 2:30 to 6:00. The Sat. registration hours are also not listed, but registration should open ½ hour
before tech.
M(P.Green) & 2(several) to adjourn at 9:30. Minutes taken and transcribed by S.Boldt.

Meadowdale International Raceway Celebration - September 13 & 14
Meadowdale International Raceway, Carpentersville, IL opened with its first race on September 13-14, 1958. To celebrate that
occasion we are preparing a 50th Anniversary Reunion and Festival at the old track on September 13-14, 2008. Hours are 10 AM
to 6 PM. Reunion gatherings for racers and workers are set for about 2 PM each day.
The MIR 50th festival will include displays of race cars and street cars from the era, veteran drivers, videos and speakers on the
races, hayrack rides around the old track, plus other attractions for adults and kids. And it’s all FREE.
Meadowdale was an exceptionally demanding 3.27 mile road course. The track property is now being restored as public Open
Space, called Raceway Woods.
The track condition and homes now adjacent to the track preclude any racing, but hiking or riding on portions of the old track will
bring back memories for those who were there, and wishful thoughts for those who weren’t.
It is being widely promoted and our WAG on attendance is 2,000-3,000, and it could be a lot more. The Heritage Days festival with
10,000+ attendees will be going on in nearby Dundee. We will run a bus between the two events.
We invite all racers to be part of this event, either by displaying your ‘50s-’60s era race or street cars, or by setting up a display for
your club with some Meadowdale connection. Individuals and non-profits get car display space or 10x10 booths free. For-profit
venture display fees are nominal.
Visit www.meadowdaleraceway.homestead.com to see what Meadowdale looks like now, and click on the 50th Anniversary link for
details of this event and applications for car, club and commercial booth space.
Do not hesitate to contact me for any further information or assistance.
Harley-Davidson Museum Reveals its Best Kept secret: Motor and Cafe Racer
Milwaukee, WI (PRWEB) -- While the Harley-Davidson Museum’s exhibits have so far been shrouded in mystery, perhaps
the destination’s best kept secret has been its two new restaurants, Motor and Cafe Racer. This isn’t your typical Museum
restaurant.
“After a ride, bikers often gather to share stories of the day’s journey - the Harley-Davidson experience is made of those
moments of connection,” said Stacey Schiesl, Harley-Davidson Museum Director. “From the menu selection to the space
design, Motor and Cafe Racer offer bold flavors of the open road in a space that fosters the camaraderie Harley-Davidson
is known for.”
At the 150-seat restaurant Motor, a menu of bold American classics with a twist celebrates the discoveries of the open
road. The peach cobbler, painstakingly perfected, will look, taste and go down exactly like it does in the roadside diners of
Georgia. There will be hints of Little Rock in the smoked BBQ ribs, echoes of an endless ride through the countryside in the
“One Pounder” pork chop, and deep-laid memories of Kansas City in the strip steak. As far west, east, north and south as
the menu travels, it will always keep one foot planted firmly in the restaurant’s hometown. Milwaukee’s best sausage and
bratwurst, sharp Wisconsin cheddar, walleye straight from the lake, locally farmed produce, and macro- and micro-brews
will all be offered.
If the food is designed for triggering memories, the space is designed for sharing them. Communal tables and horseshoeshaped
bars make every seat a perfect spot for starting conversations, either with an old friend, or the new friend one
seat over. In addition to indoor seating, Motor offers 100 outdoor seats with beautiful views of the Menomonee River and
Museum grounds. Paying homage to the restaurant’s name, Motor boasts a piece of welded artwork featuring actual Harley-Davidson
motor parts used to divide the restaurant into separate gathering spaces. The metal piece uses engine parts
that came directly from Harley-Davidson’s Pilgrim Road Powertrain Operations facility in Milwaukee. Flywheels, gears and
other parts inspire the namesake space with Harley-Davidson heritage.
The culinary road trip continues at Cafe Racer, designed as the perfect place to quickly refuel. The café welcomes guests
to come and go as they please and is as casual as a Sunday ride on an open road. For those with time to stay and chat,
the racing stripe-inspired color palette and the walls lined with Harley-Davidson and Buell racing action shots enhance the
colorful . conversations to be had inside the cafe. The cafe encourages eating outdoors as well on I-beam benches in the
Founder’s Plaza and around the Hillclimber statue for those who want to picnic.
Motor is open to the general public for lunch and dinner while Cafe Racer is open for breakfast, lunch and light dinner. A
Museum ticket is not needed to eat at either Motor or Cafe Racer. “Designing a menu that embraces the Harley-Davidson
legacy is one of the most fun and gratifying challenges I could take on,” says Robin Rosenberg, Master Chef of Motor and
Cafe Racer. “There’s a rich heritage in Harley-Davidson. To have a chance to bring that culture to life through food is one
of the greatest things I’ve ever been a part of.”
Motor is open Monday through Thursday 11 a.m. to 12 a.m., Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to
11 p.m. Cafe Racer is open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Final kitchen
orders are taken one hour prior to close. Call 1-877-HD-MUSEUM (1-877-436-8738) or visit www.h-dmuseum.com.

“Goodwood Festival of Speed” Hosts Lola 50th Anniversary
Some of motor sport’s most respected names from both sides of the Atlantic - including Damon Hill, John Surtees, Carl
Haas, Brian Redman, Paul Tracy and current F1 driver Sebastien Bourdais - will support Lola’s 50th Anniversary celebrations
at the Goodwood Festival of Speed (11-13 July). Also in attendance will be the founder of Lola cars, Eric Broadley
MBE, who will be joining Martin Birrane, Lola’s current owner and Executive Chairman, to mark this milestone occasion.
Goodwood has presented Lola with its
own event class, aptly named ‘In it for
the long run’. The Huntingdon-based
marque will have an exclusive paddock
area, from where it will run a colourful
array of cars from past to present day up
the event’s famous 1.16 mile hill climb in
the grounds of Goodwood House.
On the morning of Friday 11 July, 1996
Formula One World Champion Damon
Hill will kick-start the Lola tributes when
he drives a replica of the Lola T90 ‘Red
Ball Special’ that his father Graham
drove to victory in the 1966 Indianapolis
500. In 1967, the original Red Ball Special
was destroyed in a last-lap accident
at the Indy 500 and the Lola factory in
Huntingdon has been working around
the clock to get this exact replica ready
for Goodwood.
Jackie Stewart in the restored ‘66 American Red Ball Special
Photo: Lola Cars
While Graham Hill’s victory for Lola made him the first Englishman to win the Indy 500, his team mate Jackie Stewart was
denied victory in the same race when a broken pump forced him to retire from the lead with only eight laps to go. Rewarded
with ‘Rookie of the Year’ honours, the Scotsman’s gallant drive was one of the highlights of the 1966 race. Paul Stewart,
himself a former Lola F3000 racer and son of three times Formula One World Champion Sir Jackie Stewart, will drive his
father’s Lola T90 Indy 500 car at Goodwood during the weekend.
The Friday session will see Formula One and 500cc Motorcycle World Champion John Surtees, renew his love affair with
Lola, driving one of the many Lola designs present. Surtees’ fantastic record with Lola included numerous wins in the highly
contested Can Am Championship, winning the inaugural title in 1966. He was also synonymous with the development of the
famous ‘Hondola’ that took victory in the thrilling 1967 Italian Grand Prix.
Lola will provide another Formula One driver with a trip down memory lane. A titanic battle for supremacy in the US-based
Champ Car series in the early part of this decade resulted in Lola’s winning the title every year from 2002 until 2006. The
last three Championships were achieved with current F1 driver Sebastien Bourdais driving the Newman Haas entered Lola
B03/00. On Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th July, the French driver will once again get behind the wheel of the eye-catching
McDonald’s liveried Lola Champ car, which became his stepping stone into Formula One.
Lola’s wealth of successes on American soil will be represented at Goodwood in the hands of two other legends - Carl Haas
and Paul Tracy. Canadian Tracy is one of the ‘cult heroes’ of American single seater racing. His championship winning run
in 2003 saw him score seven victories, beating arch-rival Bourdais, then in his rookie year, to the crown. Tracy’s relationship
with the French four-time Champ Car title winner was often tested and the pair came close to blows at Denver in 2006.
However, this weekend at Goodwood will see their track rivalry put to one side when they join forces to celebrate Lola’s
golden anniversary.
American racing legend Carl Haas helped Lola attain prominence in both Indycars and the Can-Am series. Having won the
Can-Am series in 1978 with Alan Jones driving, five years later Haas teamed up with Hollywood acting legend Paul Newman
to create one of the most evocative teams in US racing history - Newman Haas Racing. Lola and the team took the
PPG/CART title with drivers Mario Andretti (1984), Michael Andretti (1991) and Nigel Mansell (1993). A further five titles
followed with Lola designed cars in the Champ Car Series. Carl Haas will be at Goodwood Festival of Speed throughout the
three-day event to join in the Lola celebrations.
Illustrating the true diversity of the company’s winning technology throughout the last half century, there will be a total of 16
Lola cars featured at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed. On show will be the Mk 1 (first car built by Lola), the Formula
5000 T332, the Mk IV, the T160 and the ground-breaking MG Lola LMP675 sportscar that raced at Le Mans 24 Hours in
2002 and 2003.
Martin Birrane has invited the Eric Broadley MBE to be an honorary guest at Goodwood. Using his £2,000 savings, Eric
formed Lola Cars Ltd in 1958 setting up a modest work shop in the South-East London suburb of Bromley. Since then the
marque has gone from strength to strength, building almost 4000 competitive cars and recording more race and championship
wins than any other racing car manufacturer in the world. Birrane, commented, “It is indeed an honour for Lola that
some of the greatest names from the world of motor sport will be supporting our 50th celebrations. Many of them have contributed
to some of the company’s finest achievements. The Goodwood Festival of Speed is one of the most colourful motor
sport events in the world and having so many Lola cars driving up the renowned hill climb will provide the perfect setting to
mark our golden anniversary.”
This year will be the 16th running of the Goodwood Festival of Speed at which cars and drivers from around the world gather
together to celebrate motor sport, both past and present. The 2008 Festival of Speed theme is ‘From Hawthorn to Hamilton’
celebrating 50 years of British F1 success. With five ex British F1 champions (Graham Hill, John Surtees, Sir Jackie Stewart,
Nigel Mansell and Damon Hill) all having raced Lola designs with distinction, it is a fitting occasion to celebrate Lola’s
golden anniversary at one of the highlights of the British sporting and social calendar.

Chicagoland Sports Car Club’s 50 Years of Rich History
CSCC was formed as an organization in 1958 and was incorporated as an Illinois Corporation in 1959. For 50 years, the
focus and mission has remained the same, with a dedicated core membership roster that has provided unique motorsports
opportunities for its members. We are planning a commemorative year-end issue of “The Downshift”, highlighting many of
the memorable moments and contributions from members over the years. In order to complete that effort, we’ll need your
help in compiling a cross section of printed material. If you have old photographs, newsletters, or memorabilia that you could
share, we would electronically scan and return the material in the same condition it was received.
If you have material that you would be willing to share, please contact the Downshft Editor, Larry Best and arrange to have
your material scanned and returned. With a target of compiling the input in October, you have some time to dig.
Frank Hartl shared some of his collection of early Downshift and Klaxon material. A sample of the original artwork and
grassroots nature of the organization is evident in this December, 1967 Downsfift sample.
Kingfish Update - Replacement for an Offy Engine
If you have been following the recent updates from Bruce Weatherston about
his 1971 Grant King “Kingfish” Indy Car, you will appreciate the complexity of
a project of this scale. Bruce discussed the availability and economics of the
original Turbo Offenhauser engine that was able to produce upwards of 1000
HP prior to the boost limits that were imposed. After the limit of 80 Hg Turbo
pressure was implemented, the 2.65 L engine still produced 770 HP in the
mid-1970’s configuration.
Preliminary fit-up of the Alfa 2.0 L Engine
Offenhauser engines of the period, with injection and turbocharger are demanding
premium dollars in the surge of Vintage Historic race preparation. As
an option, Bruce has been working on the design and fabrication of the necessary
transmission and mounting adapters for an Alfa 2.0 Litre engine. The
Alfa exhibits similar visual design characteristics of the 4 cylinder Offy engine,
which includes the orientation of the deep twin cam head. The Alfa will yield
adequate HP to get the Kingfish up to lurid speeds when it returns to action.

Volkswagen today announced plans to open a U.S. plant in Chattanooga, TN. The new plant, which will be the German-based
car company’s first in the U.S. since 1988, will begin production in 2011. The facility, Volkswagen reports,
will design and produce a car specifically for North America and invest $1 billion in the local economy.
American Petroleum Institute reports U.S. oil and natural gas companies completed an estimated 53 percent more
oil exploration drillings in the second quarter of 2008 compared to a year ago prior. In other year-over-year comparisons,
API also estimates a 14 percent increase totaling 89,947,000 feet were drilled during this period.
Hyundai Motor Company is helping drivers meet the challenge of affordable transportation with its newly developed
Kappa engine. The first car to have the Kappa engine installed will be the i10, which is produced at Hyundai’s Indian
subsidiary in Chennai. Hyundai’s i10 with a 1.25 liter Kappa engine will deliver a fuel economy rating of 5.0L/100km
(47 mpg) and produce 119g/km of CO2.
New 500 Abarth, which was first introduced at the 78th Geneva Motor show earlier this year, is due to be marketed
from July 19 in Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Greece, France and the Netherlands. The model was created
by the Fiat Group Automobiles style centre and developed by the Abarth engineers in the spirit of the legendary 500
Abarth cars of the 1960s, intending to reinforce the brand’s sporting position. No US plans were announced.
Hyundai Motor Company plans to start retail sales of its first LPG-electric hybrid vehicle in July 2009. To be sold
initially in the Korean domestic market under the Avante badge, the Elantra LPI Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) is
the world’s first hybrid vehicle to be powered by liquid petroleum gas (LPG) and the first to adopt advanced Lithium
Polymer (Li-Poly) batteries.
IBM technology originally developed for the Sony Playstation, a Spanish Oil company reports that specialized “Cell” microprocessors
are speeding the search for oil and natural gas reserves located 30,000 feet below the Gulf of Mexico up to 6
times faster than current technology. The project, sponsored by oil and gas company Repsol and the Barcelona Supercomputing
Center, represents the next frontier for oil exploration. The U.S. Department of the Interior’s Minerals Management
Service estimates that these ultra deep Gulf waters holds approximately 56 billion barrels of oil equivalent (oil and natural
gas), which, at $130/barrel, would be worth over $7 trillion and would meet the entire U.S. demand for oil and gas for about
five years. Please go faster!
