May 27, 2009 CSCC Meeting Minutes
Attendees: Frank Riemann, Dale Kofoed, Frank Hartl, Jay
Busse, Larry Best, Mike Schindlbeck, Paul Schindlbeck, Alden
Wells, Rich Cwik, Ken Rochocki, Walter Modelski, Lois
Berg-Wells, Gary Weis.
Vice President Mike Schindlbeck called the meeting to order
at 8:05 pm.
President Bill had a death (his grandmother) in the family
and could not attend. Our condolences go out to Bill and
his family.
There were comments on the comparison of both sets of
meeting minutes from the April meeting (the Downshift editor’s
and the Secretary’s). Move to accept the minutes as
reviewed (both ways) (AW) &2nd (PS) - pass.
Treasurer’s Report: (LB) We had about $350.00 in expenses
last month, mostly in meeting and Downshift expenses.
Most of the Treasury is currently in CD’s (at least
until August). We still have some money in the PayPal account.
No progress has been made on the credit card processing
project. We journaled off the 2008 Prairie Hills contribution
for the Kart Expo. Move to accept the Treasurer’s
report (RC) & 2nd (PS) - pass.
We currently have 54 members.
Old Business: The By-Law Committee - We are discussing
revisions to the election process (perhaps a single ballot
system, with the nominees presented beforehand), and
also revising the levels of Family membership participation
(whether or not you want to belong to MCSCC as well as
CSCC, etc, since MCSCC uses $22.00 per year of your
dues for very little return if you’re not a licensed comp driver).
Many clubs are currently discussing this issue.
We then had a brief break while the dinner checks were
distributed, examined, and paid.
New Business: (WM) 2nd trip to WC @ 8:35 pm - returns
at 8:36.
There was some discussion about Grundy County Speedway
and UMARA. We can run 8-24 open wheel cars in an
evening or weekend event as part of their program. Are we
interested? Thank you Walter for going down and talking
to them. They have a pretty full schedule of events, a nice
looking facility, and one of our members has even run there
(Bruce Weatherston).
Contest Board Meeting: (GW) Do you have questions
about the new Street Tuner Class? See the online GCR
for details. We had a minor driver at the first race! We also
had a discussion about the FV/FF incident at the DS/1st
Race- Kudos to the EMT’s for extracting the (unconscious)
driver of the FF! Apparently, the first event was very messy
due to the many “students” from NASA &Track Time events
that couldn’t keep off each other or understand that it was
a school, not a race. Note: MCSCC’s insurance does cover
you if you are injured performing your duties on the Friday
night before the event at the track. CSCC still needs an
explanation of our coverage under the new MC policy.
More New Business: New Club Brochures are available
from Larry Best. He’ll get them to you so that you can hand
them out wherever you go, just give him a call.
Move to adjourn at 9:13 pm (PS) & 2nd (MS) - pass.
Minutes taken and transcribed by Rich Cwik, CSCC Secretary.
April 22, 2009 CSCC Meeting Minutes
Attendees: Frank Riemann, Rich Cwik, Mike Schindlbeck, Paul
Schindlbeck, Dale Kofoed, Larry Best, Frank Hartl, Alden Wells,
Lois Berg-Wells.
Drinks were ordered at 7:15, & food was ordered at 7:21.
Vice President Mike Schindlbeck called the meeting to order at
7:05 pm, which was waved off as a no-start. Official start was at
8:00 pm. The president was stuck at his real job.
A motion was made to approve the meeting minutes as printed
(PS) &2nd (AW)-passed.
Treasurer’s Report: (LB)- Our treasury remains in good shape.
Last month’s expenses included the web hosting expense, as
well as Downshift, misc. club expenses, MC dues, and misc.
video production expenses, totaling about $400.00. As of 4-22,
CSCC had 50 paid 2009 members. A motion was made to accept
the treasurer’s report (PS) & 2nd (AW)-passed.
Old Business: By-Law revisions: We are still soliciting input
for the By-Law updating process. Copies of the by-laws were
passed out at the March meeting. We discussed the issue for a
while. Bring any ideas you have to the May meeting where we
will be drafting the new By-Laws. If you don’t have a copy of the
current by-laws send an e-mail or call Bill Boesen and he’ll see
that you get a copy.
Think about what you might want to see on the club’s website
and let Larry or Bill know, or come to a meeting, enjoy a free
beverage, and tell us about it in person!
New Business: That Loooong Race 2009 is scheduled for
October 24th and 25th- WE NEED HELP! Positions currently
available: Race Chairman, Registrar, Grid, Tech, Sound Control,
Main Gate, and many more golden opportunities. Send your resume
with position desired, salary requirements, etc, etc, etc .to
Mr. Best (and we’ll all have a good laugh at the next meeting!)
We discussed various payment options for TLR 2009. LB is
looking into various credit card processing schemes, PayPal,
Costco credit services, wireless card processing equipment,
etc. We’re trying, honest.
We don’t know yet what the insurance cost for MC races is.
This year is the 40th anniversary of FF. Do we want to do something
at TLR? Can we get MCSCC’s FF rules in alignment with
the other club’s? After all, the weight penalties were supposed to
offset the performance advantages of those aftermarket parts.
Unfortunately (or fortunately) there was no performance advantage.
So we ought to be able to change the rules around to be
the same as that other club, right?
BFR food services report- This year, at the worker bashes, Beer
will be charged at $2.00/ glass, and we won’t have to pay to buy
a full barrel that we don’t drink. Saturday night food will be billed
direct from the café and BFR will be out of the loop.
Driver’s school / First race: We had the video crew at that event
shooting footage for the club video presentation, which will be
cut in several different easy, i.e. a short public access video, U-
Tube, U Stream and U Serve TV.
We had a discussion about does MC liability and medical insurance
cover MC workers performing jobs at the track on Friday
night. At the first race, Todd Utter fell out of the pickup truck
while putting out the pylons.
Move to adjourn at 9:32 pm (PS)&2nd (FH)-pass.
Minutes taken and transcribed by Rich Cwik, CSCC Secretary,
and then heavily edited by Larry Best, Downshift Editor.
MEETING OF MIDWESTERN COUNCIL BOARDS – May 14th, 2009
Board of Directors
Regular Executive and Contest Boards meeting, Sam’s Ristorante, Rockford IL. President Cassaro called the
meeting to order at 8:05 PM. It was ascertained that a quorum was present. All officers were present and clubs
represented as follows: CSCC - Weis; FTR – S.Green; GLSCC – Schley, Kannard; LSCC – Martin, Harlan;
MSCC – Anderson, Jackson; NSSCC – Saccameno, Serra; SCSCC – Lewis, Cromas; SCCR – Rehberg, White.
M(Schley) & 2(Kannard) to approve the minutes of the April meeting as printed. Pass.
Treasurer’s Report: The Apr. School may have made a little money. All income is in with no bill from the sponsoring
club yet. There are 667 paid members. M(Serra) & 2(Saccameno) to approve report as printed. Pass. Wheeler
noted that drivers participating in both MC and SCCA schools were of the opinion that the MC on-track school is
better but doing the MC paperwork is non-user-friendly. J.Boldt noted that MC is volunteer organization and has
no paid employees to expedite membership and other paperwork.
OLD BUSINESS
- BFR New Concessions: All went well at the 1st event. Concessions people don’t handle Sat. night parties or
provide items such as plates etc. for them. Clubs must clean up their own parties afterward. Treasurers Report,
M(Martin), 2nd (?) to accept. Passed
NEW BUSINESS
- Electronic Entries: Clubs must send their documents to Cassaro well ahead of their event to be put on
myAutoEvents.
- Safety & Rescue: Pobgee mentioned that clubs need to contact him ahead of time if they need his truck for non-
BFR events and he needs gas money up front to get the truck there.
OLD BUSINESS
COMPETITION
- Autocross Committee Report: No reps present – there is nothing new.
- Race Staff Committee Report: No committee, no chief. We have a wonderful race staff and need a leader!
- Steward Committee Report: A race specialty sign-in sheet has been developed and will become part of race
reports.
- The Steward manual is on the steward forum as is the 1st race report. Stewards should access the forum
regularly. The NS Autobahn event is on myAutoEvents, and there will be a chase race on that date. Clubs need
to send their reps to these meetings. Next one is Fri., July 17 at Backyard Bar & Grill in Roscoe at 8 PM.
- Minor Participation: Last meeting a minor was approved to participate in the first w-w event without driver school
attendance, which is required by the rules. He did not show up at the 1st race. A different minor with similar
qualifications showed up to run the race, and since there were no minutes of the April meeting to refer to, it was
not clear if the ruling could apply to another driver or just the original one in the motion. A special meeting took
place to allow the second driver to participate. He performed well, so he will be allowed to participate in other MC
w-w events. There was much controversy over the issue.
- April Race: Weather was cold and rainy. Much credit is due to drivers and staff who braved the elements.
NEW BUSINESS
- First Race: A driver entering the school for track time holding a NASA license drove over-aggressively after being
cautioned that at a driver school such behavior is inappropriate. He then was involved in a serious incident. It was
discovered that his NASA license has been revoked. There is no way to learn if a driver’s competition license from
other organizations has been revoked, as the other licensing bodies will not share on this matter. M(Jackson) &
2(J.Boldt) that Matt King be banned from MC events for life. Tabled for more information. Wheeler will invite him
to attend the June meeting. Jackson is the steward of the next event, which occurs before then, so he will refuse
the driver’s entry should he enter, as is the steward’s prerogative.
- Todd Utter was injured while setting out cones the Friday evening before the school; he is recovering. It was noted
that an individual’s insurance is his primary coverage. If he has no insurance, the event insurance is primary.
- At another sanctioning body’s event this year a driver collided with a turkey flying over the track and was seriously
injured.
M(P.Green) & 2(several) to adjourn at 9:55. Minutes taken and transcribed by S.Boldt.

Raceway Woods: Subtle Track Artifacts Remain
It’s been 51 years since Meadowdale International Raceway opened the gates as one of the world’s most challenging
road racing courses. Meadowdale has now been closed for 40 years. Meadowdale International Raceway was built in
1958 to promote growth in the Carpentersville area, 40 miles northwest of Chicago. The original track was 3.27 miles
long with a variety of turns and elevation changes. Its signature feature was the Monza Wall, a 180 degree steeply
banked turn that led onto the 4,000 foot main straight.
Meadowdale underwent a series of track and management changes in its brief life. It hosted major spectator road
races from many different sanctioning bodies: USAC, Midwestern Council, SCCA regions, AMA motorcycles and kart
clubs. An NHRA drag racing sanction was issued late in 1968 for the 1969 season. It was also used for police training,
new car introductions and local club events.
The last major event at Meadowdale was an SCCA Trans-Am race July 6-7, 1968. A few sports car club races followed,
but for all practical purposes, the track closed down after that pro event. Plans to revive it were announced
periodically, but none were successful.
The combined park districts who bought the north 90 acres of the Meadowdale Raceway property in 1994 purchased
the balance of the track in 2002. The track is now a forest preserve, nature area, recreation area called Raceway
Woods. When they put up buildings at Raceway Woods, they have indicated they would devote some space to the
track history.
While we will never again race on the track, a vigorous clean-up campaign is being waged by volunteers to clear open
areas for activities and picnics and a walking path around the old course. This is being done to assure that Meadowdale
Raceway retains its important position in American racing history.
Jack and Donna Redmer are volunteer stewards for the track. They live adjacent to the property and Jack raced on it
when it was open. They devote a substantial amount of their time and resources to making the property a pleasant
place for motorsports fans and others to hike, picnic, and relax.
CSCC Member Phil Paradiso (above left) “walked the course”, amazed at the terrain and scale of MIR. The remaining
steel I-Beams of the Gate 2 bridge over the track (above right) are being reclaimed by the landscape. A section
of inside retaining wall (above) remains in good condition on the uphill “Serpentine” near “Len’s Hairpin”. Much of the
MIR Photo: course Lynn is Serra accessible on foot, offering a vigorous workout when following the traffic direction (up hill).

Madison’s The “Greatest Spectacles In Racing” At BHF
Denis Downs returned to Club Formula Ford following a detour into S2000 and a year off. Good luck to Denis in his
new Crossle. Now we need to get Pete Wood back in his Crossle to challenge Bruce’s Van Diemen fleet.
It took a while, but Dan Ibrahim finally wore the stickers off the new tires and got some traction.
“More Than I Know” - Random Industry News Bytes
By Larry Best
- Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton’s world championship MP4-23 was inducted into the Mercedes-
Benz Museum as part of the 75th anniversary of the Silver Arrows. Hamilton and head of Mercedes-
Benz Motorsport, Norbert Haug, watched as the winning car was lifted by crane into its new resting
place at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Germany. The car joins the collection of legendary
Mercedes racing cars on display at the museum dating all the way back to 1934. There is also a display
of current models including the cute “Smart Car” which was originally the result of a partnership
between Swatch and Daimler-Benz. The 58-mpg car has won numerous awards in Europe and can
be purchased in many “mouth watering” colors.
- BMW will be introducing a voice control command ensuring precise transmission of a destination
or music request throughout all model series in autumn 2009. For the first time, one
single voice command is sufficient to completely transmit the driver’s destination into the
navigation system. The driver’s verbal statement specifying the place, street and number is
processed immediately by the system, all data going directly into the navigation unit. BMW
is also the first European car maker to offer voice recognition serving not only to choose the
appropriate audio source, but also to find individual music titles. The BMW system monitors
and interprets the user’s voice commands regarding the type of music, the name of the artist,
an album or an individual title, ensuring precise access to the audio program desired.
- With 39,256 car registrations in May 2009 (compared with 24,987 in May 2008), Opel remains
for the fourth month in a row as the second most purchased brand in Germany, according
to registration statistics released by the German government. From January to May
2009, the number of newly registered Opel vehicles rose to 149,805. That is an increase of
25,782 from the same period last year when 124,023 new Opel vehicles were registered,
for a growth of about 21 percent.
- Daimler AG, Deutsche Post DHL, the energy group OMV, the Stuttgarter Straßenbahnen
AG public transportation company, and the Finnish oil company Neste Oil presented the
initial results of their joint pilot test project on fuel from sustainable production during the
event “Diesel from renewable sources - A step toward zero-emission transportation?” in
Berlin on June 9. Since mid-2008, 14 series-produced Mercedes-Benz trucks and buses
that run exclusively on sustainably produced NExBTL renewable diesel have been in service
under everyday conditions in Germany. Results showed that from the sustainable
cultivation of palm oil and its processing to the fuel’s use in a vehicle, the CO2 emissions
of the fuel used in the pilot test have been reduced by more than 60 percent compared to
fossil fuels.
- Porsche AG presents its entire history ‘in motion’ in a 2 ½ hour film entitled ‘The Porsche
Way’, from the early years up to the present day on DVD. Starting with the lifetime achievements
of Ferdinand and Ferry Porsche, the film focuses in eight chapters on the development
of the famous sports car manufacturer, proceeding from one decade to the next. The
DVD is based on the Archives Collection with more than 5,000 hours of footage and takes
impressive scenes from the history of the Company, the products and motorsport, featuring
numerous film extracts never seen before. The DVD is available from the Porsche Museum
Shop in German and English. Check the Porsche site under “Museum” for additional details:
http://www.porsche.com/usa/aboutporsche/
- General Motors Corp. and Koenigsegg Group AB, a consortium led by Koenigsegg Automotive
AB, confirmed the details of a memorandum of understanding for the purchase of
Saab Automobile AB that secures Saab’s future. The sale, expected to close by the end of
the third quarter of this year, includes an expected $600 million funding commitment from
the European Investment Bank (EIB) guaranteed by the Swedish government. Additional
support is to be provided by GM and Koenigsegg Group AB to fund Saab’s operations and
product program investments. This includes plans to launch several new products that are
in the final stages of development. Saab had filed for reorganization under Swedish Law on
Feb. 20, 2009. This tentative agreement is a key milestone for Saab to successfully emerge
from its reorganization process.
- For 2010 GM will focus on four brands -- Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC -- that combine
leading-edge design, technology, engineering excellence and quality, backed by the
most comprehensive customer care package in the industry. For those brands, GM will introduce
six all-new, car and crossover models, including the Buick LaCrosse luxury sedan;
the Cadillac SRX crossover and Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon; the Chevrolet Camaro sports
coupe and Chevrolet Equinox compact SUV; and the GMC Terrain compact SUV. In addition,
Chevrolet’s iconic nameplate, Corvette, adds the Grand Sport, one of the most recognized
names from Corvette’s illustrious racing heritage. Additionally, the Pontiac Vibe will
be available as a 2010 model; the Pontiac G6 will be available only for fleet customers.

The Downshift - Page 11
Bruce Weatherston launched another Van Diemen FF at the Autobahn. Bruce has the distinction of having driven on
the Oval Race Course at the Grundy County Speedway. The 5/8 mile paved oval is on Rt. 47, one mile North of I-80.
The Open Wheel Race Series is sanctioned by the United Midget Auto Racing Association (UMARA), and is in it’s
23rd season. The promoter of the series at Grundy County has extended an offer to host a Formula Car race event if
there was enough interest. If you drive a formula car and might be interested in a one-off venture to Grundy County,
let a member of the BoD know, or attend a meeting and discuss it. Between 8 and 20 cars would be needed.
