Taste of Joliet Inaugural Custom & Classic Car Show The Taste of Joliet Inaugural Custom and Classic Car/Truck Show will be held on Sunday, June 28, 2009 from 11:00am - 4:00 pm at 3000 W. Jefferson Street in Joliet, IL. Registration will begin at 7:30 am. The pre-registration fee is $15.00. On-site registration is $20.00. The event will feature a live d.j., food, beer garden and the Mud Turtles. A goodie bag and t-shirt will be available to the first 400 registrants. The organizers expect a large crowd, as the show coincides with the last day of the Taste of Joliet, which is expected to draw over 40,000 people in three days. The show is open to all vehicles and will feature awards for the top 3 winners in each class. First and second place winners will receive trophies and third place winners will receive ribbons. The People’s Choice winner will receive a $150.00 Joliet Park District gift card. The Best of Show award recipient will receive a $500.00 cash prize. The Downshift - Page “More Than I Know” - Random Industry News Bytes By Larry Best - Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton’s world championship MP4-23 was inducted into the Mercedes- Benz Museum as part of the 75th anniversary of the Silver Arrows. Hamilton and head of Mercedes- Benz Motorsport, Norbert Haug, watched as the winning car was lifted by crane into its new resting place at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Germany. The car joins the collection of legendary Mercedes racing cars on display at the museum dating all the way back to 1934. There is also a display of current models including the cute “Smart Car” which was originally the result of a partnership between Swatch and Daimler-Benz. The 58-mpg car has won numerous awards in Europe and can be purchased in many “mouth watering” colors. - BMW will be introducing a voice control command ensuring precise transmission of a destination or music request throughout all model series in autumn 2009. For the first time, one single voice command is sufficient to completely transmit the driver’s destination into the navigation system. The driver’s verbal statement specifying the place, street and number is processed immediately by the system, all data going directly into the navigation unit. BMW is also the first European car maker to offer voice recognition serving not only to choose the appropriate audio source, but also to find individual music titles. The BMW system monitors and interprets the user’s voice commands regarding the type of music, the name of the artist, an album or an individual title, ensuring precise access to the audio program desired. - With 39,256 car registrations in May 2009 (compared with 24,987 in May 2008), Opel remains for the fourth month in a row as the second most purchased brand in Germany, according to registration statistics released by the German government. From January to May 2009, the number of newly registered Opel vehicles rose to 149,805. That is an increase of 25,782 from the same period last year when 124,023 new Opel vehicles were registered, for a growth of about 21 percent. - Daimler AG, Deutsche Post DHL, the energy group OMV, the Stuttgarter Straßenbahnen AG public transportation company, and the Finnish oil company Neste Oil presented the initial results of their joint pilot test project on fuel from sustainable production during the event “Diesel from renewable sources - A step toward zero-emission transportation?” in Berlin on June 9. Since mid-2008, 14 series-produced Mercedes-Benz trucks and buses that run exclusively on sustainably produced NExBTL renewable diesel have been in service under everyday conditions in Germany. Results showed that from the sustainable cultivation of palm oil and its processing to the fuel’s use in a vehicle, the CO2 emissions of the fuel used in the pilot test have been reduced by more than 60 percent compared to fossil fuels. - Porsche AG presents its entire history ‘in motion’ in a 2 ½ hour film entitled ‘The Porsche Way’, from the early years up to the present day on DVD. Starting with the lifetime achievements of Ferdinand and Ferry Porsche, the film focuses in eight chapters on the development of the famous sports car manufacturer, proceeding from one decade to the next. The DVD is based on the Archives Collection with more than 5,000 hours of footage and takes impressive scenes from the history of the Company, the products and motorsport, featuring numerous film extracts never seen before. The DVD is available from the Porsche Museum Shop in German and English. Check the Porsche site under “Museum” for additional details: http://www.porsche.com/usa/aboutporsche/ - General Motors Corp. and Koenigsegg Group AB, a consortium led by Koenigsegg Automotive AB, confirmed the details of a memorandum of understanding for the purchase of Saab Automobile AB that secures Saab’s future. The sale, expected to close by the end of the third quarter of this year, includes an expected $600 million funding commitment from the European Investment Bank (EIB) guaranteed by the Swedish government. Additional support is to be provided by GM and Koenigsegg Group AB to fund Saab’s operations and product program investments. This includes plans to launch several new products that are in the final stages of development. Saab had filed for reorganization under Swedish Law on Feb. 20, 2009. This tentative agreement is a key milestone for Saab to successfully emerge from its reorganization process. - For 2010 GM will focus on four brands -- Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC -- that combine leading-edge design, technology, engineering excellence and quality, backed by the most comprehensive customer care package in the industry. For those brands, GM will introduce six all-new, car and crossover models, including the Buick LaCrosse luxury sedan; the Cadillac SRX crossover and Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon; the Chevrolet Camaro sports coupe and Chevrolet Equinox compact SUV; and the GMC Terrain compact SUV. In addition, Chevrolet’s iconic nameplate, Corvette, adds the Grand Sport, one of the most recognized names from Corvette’s illustrious racing heritage. Additionally, the Pontiac Vibe will be available as a 2010 model; the Pontiac G6 will be available only for fleet customers.
