The Legacy Continues
Susan Kahler made the trip from Richmond Kentucky with the “Screamin’ Green” ‘67
Spitfire to run Chicagoland’s Loooong Race, in the Vintage/Historic race group. Susan
exits Blackhawk Farms’ Turn 4 ahead of Tom Strange in a ‘72 Triumph Spitfire.
Chicagoland Sports Car Club dialed in the October weather with a great result for the
39th running of Chciagoland’s Loooong Race at Blackhawk Farms Raceway on October
24th and 25th. With 6 race groups over two days, 168 cars participated in the final
Wheel to Wheel event in the Midwestern Council Championship Series. Fifty lap races
were the standard for all groups, with the V/H group running in 2 25 lap races with
cumlative scoring.
On behalf of Chicagoland Sports Car Club, we thank all of the Race Staff members,
Stewards, Safety & Rescue, Chief’s of Specialty, and volunteers that helped to make
the event a success. The Staff of Blackhawk Farms Raceway and the Paramedic team
provided a safe environment throughout the weekend. We also thank the competitors
in both the Wheel to Wheel and Big Wheel events. All of the competitors put their best
effort into gaining the final points of the 2009 season. Thanks to ALL!

MEETING OF MIDWESTERN COUNCIL BOARDS – October 8th, 2009
Regular Executive and Competition Board meeting, Sam’s Ristorante, Rockford IL.
EXECUTIVE BOARD
President Cassaro called the meeting to order at 8:13. It was ascertained that a quorum was present. All officers
were present and clubs were represented as follows: CSCC-Best, Weis; FT-Hoover, Brozynski; GLSCC-Kannard,
Schley; LSCC-Jerominski, Karth; MSCCAnderson, Schneider; NSSCC-Serra; SCSCC-Cromas, Lewis; SCCR-
P.Green, Rehberg.
M(Kannard) & 2(Schley) to approve the minutes of the meeting as printed. Pass.
TREASURER’S REPORT: There is limited activity at this time of year with only sanction fees coming in. M(Kannard)
& 2(P.Green) to approve the report as presented. Pass.
OLD BUSINESS
- Special Awards: These must be submitted by Nov. 10.
- Officer Nominations: Nominees for Comp. Director are Gary Weis and Patrick Kevin. Pres. Cassaro is willing to
serve again and hopes to give over other MC jobs he does. V-P Kneubuehl will not run again. Sec. S. Boldt and N.
Harlan are willing to serve as Sec. and Treas. respectively.
- MC Promotional Flyers: A sample is on the MC website. Clubs should use it.
- Safety & Rescue Truck: Trucks from the old Milw. Mile organizers are not available. Serra will contact RA, since
it was rumored that RA is getting new equipment. Martin is working on radios. He needs to know how much of an
upgrade the MC is willing to finance. A committee is proposed to work on these needs. Jackson will set up one for
radios and will work on having a Finance Committee meeting also to address such needs. Hoover suggested to get
the word out to members who may be willing to help with donations.
NEW BUSINESS
- 2010 Race Schedule: Tentative dates for BFR and ACC are in the works. A date at RA is a possibility, as is one
at the Milw. Mile. No club was interested in a July 4 weekend date at ACC, MSCC might be interested in a date at
Grattan if a consortium of clubs can be formed (no other club picked up on it), and NS would partner at Gingerman
(no other clubs expressed interest).
- GTSC Class: There is some interest from non-MC drivers to include this class.
- Race & Performance Expo: It will be on Mar. 6-7 at Pheasant Run in St. Charles IL. MC had 2 booths last year
and will try for 3. The cost for 2 is $1050 with a la carte items. M(Wheeler) & 2(Hoover) to approve the expenditure
of $1500 total for 3 booths, and if one is thrown in for free, all the better. Pass. MC flyers will be used to the max
there.
- Driver Sanction: J. Boldt reported that at the Autobahn Oct. 4 event, official dated and timed paperwork was again
removed from the Timing & Scoring bulletin board. This has happened several times this season in spite of a note
on the board not to do so, warnings at driver meetings, and mentions of it in Board meeting minutes. This paperwork
is dated, timed, and signed, and it needs to remain available to other drivers who may find an error or wish to
dispute results. The offending driver was found and disqualified, and would not be eligible for a refund because he
had time on track. He filed a grievance with Pres. Cassaro requesting 2nd place points for the event, feeling that
disqualification was illegal and unjust.
It was determined that the steward’s decision was not illegal, as MC rules do cover the situation. M(Wheeler) &
2(Schneider) that the event steward’s action was reviewed and found justified; no reason was seen to take any
contrary action; Jeff Primm will be notified in writing that the Board supports the action, listing the GCR passages
that apply. Unanimous pass. Further driver sanctions were suggested by other board members, but these were not
pursued.
COMPETITION BOARD
OLD BUSINESS
- Autocross Committee: There was a meeting at ACC on Oct. 3. Info will be at the Nov. meeting. No new meeting
was scheduled.
- Race Staff: The MC staff is excellent and committed and needs a steward.
- Steward Committee: Next meeting is Oct. 17 at 7 PM at Backyard Bar & Grill. All club stewards are encouraged to
attend. Continued on Page 5
The Downshift - Page
MEETING OF MIDWESTERN COUNCIL BOARDS – Continued
Rule-a-Thon – AX
• Previously passed rule to move all pressurized vehicles up one class was rescinded. Language will be added to
tech sheets for competitors to affirm that performance modifications were declared.
• Motion to add in section 6.3: All/any AWD/4WD std./opt – SPA –2 did not pass. Jackson noted that the classification
committee should properly classify cars individually and not penalize them across the board.
• Several cars were proposed for classification but need input from the AX Classification Committee.
Rule-a-Thon – W/W
• Driver Info Card: Did not pass as a requirement or strong recommendation. The MC has a procedure in place.
When it didn’t work, it was because non-MC rescue personnel did not utilize it.
• Coolant: J.Boldt’s proposal that a 20% concentration of antifreeze in a car’s cooling system be allowed passed.
The concentration can be checked in Tech. With early and late season events it could avoid engine damage while
not being a great enough concentration to complicate clean-up.
• GT Lite: D.Wessel’s proposal that SCCA GT Lite cars be allowed to run in GT4 with GTL specs passed. This follows
SCCA changes.
• Fiesta: R. Woelfle’s proposal that the 77-80 Fiesta be reclassified from GP to HP passed. This follows the SCCA
change.
• Motorcycle Engines in FA: J. Bartelt and Formula Committee’s proposal to add rules clarifying their use was tabled
for club input.
• DOT tires for SpecRenault: T. McCarter’s proposal that any DOT tire meeting original Yoko (no longer available) or
Goodyear sizes may be used passed. Drivers are asked to try to come up with alternatives that work.
• SRen Carbs: McCarter’s proposal to allow alternative commercially available 2-bbl progressive carb with the same
throttle bore size as the originals (which are no longer available) passed.
• GT2 Spoilers & Wings: McCarter’s proposal that GT2 rules be updated to include SCCA spoiler & wing rules
passed. M(Hoover) & 2(Kannard) to also adopt those rules for GT3 and GTLite. Pass.
• Roll Cages: McCarter’s proposal to bring roll cage material in line with industry specs, eliminating ERW in Appendix
Z, 2.1 and similarly in App. ZZ, as of 2011 is approved under “Errors and Omissions”.
• GTSC: D. Karth’s proposal to create GTSC (GT-stock car) passed.
• AGS Heads: P. Meier’s proposal to add the Edelbrock head for AGS GM & Ford cars passed. This matches SCCA
rules for AS. It is noted that there is a weight penalty with some heads.
NEW BUSINESS
- IT Rule Revision: ECU rules tabled for input.
M(P.Green) & 2(several) to adjourn at 10:28 . Pass. Minutes taken and transcribed by S. Boldt.
Lotus Esprit Sets Pace At Chicagoland’s Loooong Race
October 2009 CSCC Membership Meeting Minutes
Minutes of the October 28th, 2009 Chicagoland Sports Car Club general Membership and BOD Meeting
Attendees: Rich Cwik, Dale Kofoed, Frank Riemann, Frank Hartl, Paul Schindlbeck, Gary Weis, Jay Busse, Larry
Best, Bill Boesen, Keith Kofoed, Alden Wells, Lois Berg-Wells.
Drinks were ordered at 6:58 pm, and food at 7:06 pm.
President Bill attempted to call the meeting to order at 8:27 pm, but actually called it to order at 8:34 pm.
Motion to remove the words “00000 0000 0000000” from Sept meeting minutes. (JB) -pass
A second motion to remove “00 00000000 0000000” from the Downshift was also made and passed. (Sorry,
the Secretary believes in transparent government, but the BOD believes in Political correctness).
Move and second to accept the minutes as revised (BB) &2nd (LB) -pass.
Treasurer’s Report: (with a little Loooong Race thrown in) -(LB)- We took in some money, we spent some money,
we’ve paid some bills, we still have some bills to pay. The refund request deadline (was) 10-29, so we won’t know
the final accounting for the race until the refunds are processed and we get the final bill from BFR. 202 cars registered,
and 168 actually hit the track on a beautiful race weekend. We’ve paid the track rental bill, but the final bill for
worker meals and misc. expenses from the track hasn’t arrived yet. Somebody stiffed BFR $48.00 for race gas (6
gallons @$8.00/gallon Saturday, and BFR made CSCC pay for that. If you know who didn’t remember to pay, we’ll
gladly accept their $48.00 CSCC extends their thanks to Dave and Meade Korwin for the use of the PPG Pace Car
all weekend.
Move to accept the Treasurer’s Report (PS) &2nd (FH) -pass.
Chicagoland’s Loooong Race 39: There was a brief discussion about bad driving and red flags at CLR39. For next
year, we definitely need a registrar for CLR40. It’s an easy, although time consuming job (at least in the final week
before the race), but Larry will equip you with all the software and tools, and training you will need to be successful.
There will be free Geritol for Senior trainees. The total time commitment is probably 6-7 weeks of evenings, spread
out through September and October. Candidates will need access to a Windows PC, familiarity with the Microsoft
Office suite of software (i.e. Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.) and a relatively decent printer. Call Larry for more info, or to
volunteer. It’s never to early to begin basic training!
The race schedule used for CLR 39 worked well despite several red-flag moments that required brief periods of
downtime. Generally, the event met the base level financial and operational objectives. A number of pre-registered
no-shows were attributed to pre-event weather conditions. A lighter than expected number of on-site registrations
helped to close the gap on car counts, keeping the event in the black. Competitors from 10 US States and 2 other
Countries reinforced the diversity of entrants to this annual event. Participation in the Jerry Smith Big Wheel Race
was on par with 2008. A special “Thank You” was made to Bill Dentinger for his generous donation to the Big Wheel
event. Bill has supported this aspect of the Loooong Race for many years.
We had a discussion about the club purchasing some FRS radios to facilitate communication between Registration,
Club Volunteers, and CSCC Race officials. (Not to be confused with official Race Control communication equipment
that is managed, used and supported by others.)
There was a discussion about the Race Staff Rides on Saturday afternoon, following competition activities. (There
was some stink raised during the Worker Rides that I wasn’t privy to at CLR39).
MC Contest Board: (GW)- This month they’ll pick the picking order for the race dates for 2010.
They’ve added another class, called GTSC, for stock cars previously running as Stock Cars in GT1 or UNR. Specific
rules for steel bodied cars and trucks will be included in the 2010 GCR.
MC will have a booth again at the Race Performance Expo at Pheasant Run on March 6 & 7, 2010.
There was a discussion about the guy that’s been removing the posted results from the pavilion all season and his
disqualification for it at Autobahn (he finally got caught!).
The Auto-X rules changes will be posted online. You can run antifreeze in your race car in 2010 (in reduced concentrations,
and if you PROMISE not to spill it onto the track).
The MC Banquet will be the third Saturday in January at the Cliff Breakers in Rockford , and the MIRPA banquet will
be the 4th Saturday in January.
Move to adjourn at 9:53 pm, by President Bill -pass
