July 22, 2009 CSCC Meeting Minutes
Minutes of the July 22nd, 2009 Chicagoland Sports Car
Club General Membership and BOD Meeting
Attendees: Mike Schindlbeck, Dale Kofoed, Frank Riemann,
Larry Best, Frank Hartl, Alden Wells, Lois Berg-
Wells, Rich Cwik, Bill Boesen, Gary Weis, Walter Modelski,
Marcia Modelski, Jay Busse.
Food was ordered around 7:23 pm and arrived around
7:55 pm.
The meeting was called to order at 8:21pm by the pounding
of the President’s new gavel (let the minutes reflect
the new Stainless Steel Gavel was a gift from Mr. Alden
Wells).
There was a motion to approve the minutes by Mr. Wells,
seconded by Mr. Schindlbeck- passed.
Treasurer’s Report: (LB) We still have money in the
Treasury. On 7-22, we paid the Meadowdale web hosting
bill (we sponsor their website) , Downshift expenses,
some office supplies & postage, and some meeting expenses.
We have two new members, Ivan Amaya and Jordan
Denhoed. Chris Schreyer was a mid-season renewal.
Move to accept Treasurer’s report (AW) &2nd (FH)-pass.
Old Business: The By Laws- No actions at this time, but
many suggestions are coming in. We’ll discuss further
next month.
TLR - We (the BOD) are all in favor of retaining the event
name as” Chicagoland’s Loooong Race”, as it was last
year- an identity marketing measure (as it were). This will
better reflect the club’s continuous association with the
event for nearly 40 years.
Motion to retain “Chicagoland’s Loooong Race” as the
name instead of “That Loooong Race” as the official
event name. -pass.
CLR schedule: GW printed up a bunch of variations but
left them all at home. He will bring them to the August
meeting where the format WILL be decided. Come and
speak out for the format you desire!
CLR’s budget has increased - the track rental is up
$1000.00, from last year, insurance is up as well (to
$2242.00). We have to source our own pizza this year,
but beer will be dispensed on a per glass basis (we’ll
probably save here since we don’t have to buy a whole
half barrel to get those other three glasses). WE NEED A
SATURDAY NIGHT FOOD CO-ORDINATOR!
CSCC will print and mail entry forms to competitors.
CLR Responsibility List:
- Poster-Jay Busse
- Press Release- Larry Best
- Banner Revision-Jay will follow up
- Big Wheel Race- Patti Martin
MC Contest Board Meeting: (GW)- Probably the shortest
Contest Board meeting in recent history (8:00 - 8:34 pm)
The second school was very lightly attended- 2 open wheel
students, & 8 closed wheel students, plus a couple of signoffs.
The Milwaukee Mile is on. The Milwaukee Mile Corp. is
bankrupt, but State Fair Park management took over and is
managing with a view towards club racing, instead of Pro
events.
The 2009 MC Banquet will be the third Saturday of January
and NSSCC is the organizing club.
The Auto-X Chairman of the week is Todd Simpson.
Steward’s Committee-nothing
The Rule-A-Thon is August 15th- Auto-X in the morning,
W2W at 1:00pm- If you have a proposed rules change submit
10 copies to Ray Jackson at the meeting.
A few people have stepped forward and nominated themselves
for MC Board positions.
19th.
CSCC was incorporated on September 18th, 1959, after being
in existence for one year as a club
There was much discussion about illegal ATV activity in the
paddock- a suggestion was made to take a digital picture of
it and submit it to the Stewards for action.
Move to adjourn at 9:37pm (AW) & 2nd (MS) -pass.
OLD BUSINESS
- Driver School Update: Harlan reported 18 entries for AX and about 15 for W-W. More track timers would be
appreciated.
- Milwaukee Mile Update: MM management has gone bankrupt. Cassaro has been working with State Fair Park
management, who is taking over track rental and prefers working with smaller sanctioning bodies such as MC and
SCCA instead of larger groups such as NASCAR or IRL (although private promoters may sponsor the latter events).
The event will be over Labor Day weekend with HPDE on Sat., W-W on Sun. and AX on Mon. Event details are
being managed and Ferris wheel competition is hot among the clubs,.
- 2009 Awards Banquet: Serra is in negotiation with a few venues. It is the 3rd Saturday in January.
NEW BUSINESS
- 2009 Directory: Thanks go to Schneider who put it together and distributed it. It looks very good. Extras will be
available at the next meeting.
COMPETITION BOARD
OLD BUSINESS
- Autocross Committee: Todd Simpson is the new chairman. Meetings will be at events so there are more attendees
with more input.
- Race Staff: No committee. Cassaro took the yellow S&R truck to get fixed; it worked fine at Autobahn.
- Steward Committee: Next meeting is July 17 at Backyard Bar & Grill. Meetings are open to all MC members with
Bridge Stewards and Club Stewards strongly encouraged to attend. Jackson will mail out an agenda this week.
with 10 copies submitted at the beginning of the meeting. It will be on Aug. 15
Chicagoland’s Facebook Page Grows Fan Base
CSCC’s Facebook Page features a Video about Road Racing.
Through the efforts of CSCC President, Bill Boesen,
Chicagoland Sports Car Club has established
a Facebook presence. The page enables
social networking for friends and fans of the Club.
In it’s unannounced state, the site has already attracted
a number of members and fans that want to
stay in touch. If you use the Web, open a browser
session at www.Facebook.com. In the Search box
at the top of the Facebook page, insert “Chicagoland
Sports Car Club”. If you are new to Facebook,
you may want to establish a page (it’s free) of your
own. Social networking sites can be an interesting
experience, but you have to set boundaries on
your privacy and access. The tools in Facebook allow
you to control your exposure level. Bill has also
included the 9 minute version of the CSCC Video
that was used at the 2009 Kart Expo in February.
The video profiles the various classes of cars, featuring
Club members and other MC competitors in
action. You can check out the site and see what’s
up. If you need some help, Contact Bill Boesen,
Mike Schindlbeck, or Larry Best for some navigation
tips that will quickly get you up to speed.
Jim Hartman Trophy History - Project Launched
If you have been to a Chicagoland Banquet in the last 43 years, you
have likely been part of the ceremony for awarding the “Jim Hartman
Memorial Trophy”, the perpetual award in CSCC for “Driver of the
Year”. The recipient has always shared his or her favorite beverage
in the 3 handled cup with other Club Members in celebration.
The Hartman Trophy was first awarded in 1966, two years after the
untimely passing of it’s namesake, Jim Hartman. The cup is inscribed
on 3 sides with the names of the recipients through 1984. Curiously,
the cup is also inscribed with the names of 9 members of a mysterious
Rowing Team, from which the cup was liberated to take on the
recognition duties for CSCC Road Racing drivers.
The custom wooden base was created in 1985, providing 4 sides
to expand the names of the recipients for some time to come. Each
year the recipient form the previous year is presented a replacement
plaque as the trophy travels form member to member. Some CSCC
members have earned the honor more than once.
Realizing that a Club with 50 years of rich history might not recall all
the details of each person to be awarded the Jim Hartman Trophy,
Mike Schindlbeck has volunteered to further document the full history
of the Cup, it’s origin, and the members that have won it. Mike
needs your assistance in starting this work, with an emphasis on
identifying what kind of car the winner was driving, current contact
information, and what they are doing today. You can contact Mike at
630-308-4456 or via email at MK6C@AOL.com. A list of the Jim Hartman
Trophy recipients throughout the history of the award includes:
1966 - Curtiss Cromell, 1967 - Don Turnbull, 1968 - Mike Chmielewski, 1969 - Frank Riemann, 1970 - Aaron Deer,
1971 - Pat Thoma, 1972 - Skip Brigham, 1973 - Craig Leifheit, 1974 - Lewis Pedersen, 1975 - Deiter Greisinger,
1976 - Dave Smith, 1977 - Don Erickson, 1978 - Tom Gentz, 1979 - Phil Paradiso, 1980 - Ken Dixon, 1981 - Tom
Formula Ford Replacement Engine Proposal: Honda Fit
ELKHART LAKE, Wis. As one of the initial offerings
in its new grassroots motorsports initiative,
Honda Performance Development, Inc. (HPD), the
authorized Honda and Acura auto racing company
in North America, is proposing entry into an SCCA
Club Racing program with an eye toward lowering
operating costs, while strengthening FF’s position
as the first step in American open-wheel racing.
HPD’s concept, submitted to the Sports Car Club of
America for membership input and approval, incorporates
a 1.5-liter, Honda Fit L15A7 engine into an
existing FF chassis. During initial testing, the Honda
engine provided performance equal to the long outof-production
“Kent” engine, but featuring a modern
fuel-injected design with superior service life, improved
availability and lower operating costs.
“FF has a tremendous history, here in North America and around the world. Through the ‘70s and ‘80s, it was THE
place for open-wheel racers to ‘cut their racing teeth’,” said Erik Berkman, President of Honda Performance Development.
“So many champion drivers, such as our own Jimmy Vasser, Gil de Ferran and Bryan Herta, got their start in
FF. Our goal is not to force competitors to make a change, but to make FF more affordable and more competitive.”
A prototype, utilizing a Swift DB-1 chassis and HPD-developed bolt-on conversion kit, will make its public debut this
weekend with demonstration laps during Road America’s FF 40th Anniversary Celebration. The Swift-Honda will be on
display in Road America’s North Paddock throughout the weekend, and officials from HPD and its parent, American
Honda Motor Company, Inc., will be on hand to meet with SCCA members and answer questions. HPD and American
Honda are actively soliciting the reactions and thoughts of both current and potential FF competitors.
The Honda FF engine has been developed by Honda Performance Development in cooperation with Sandy Shamlian
of Quicksilver Race Engines. The engine is being developed to equal the performance of the Kent powerplant through
utilization of an HPD-developed intake restrictor plate and appropriately mapped Engine Control Unit (ECU). If testing
reveals the need for additional performance adjustments, changes can be made to the restrictor plate and/or the
ECU maps to achieve this goal.
“Many of us, myself included, have been involved in FF
racing,” said Marc Sours, HPD Production Division Manager
and Large Project Leader for HPD’s grassroots projects.
“We’ve all seen FF engine costs rise and replacement
parts become increasingly difficult to locate. “The result
has been a decline in FF participation. We believe that
introducing the modern, less-expensive Honda Fit engine
can restore interest in and raise the profile of FF to a point
where it once again becomes the place for young drivers
to begin their careers, and where existing SCCA club racers
will find economical, close competition.”
Original equipment in the 2009 Honda Fit, the L15A7 is
a fuel-injected, 1.5-liter, overhead cam engine. It is at
the beginning of its current production generation, with a
minimum of 10 years’ parts support required by law at the
conclusion of production. HPD will supply all necessary
parts from intake through exhaust, including the chassis
conversion kit. The result will be a modern and reliable
engine requiring minimal maintenance and tuning. Specifically, HPD expects FF competitors to reduce their engine
operating costs. Engine rebuilds would be reduced from two per year to one every other year; top-end refreshing
would be needed just once a year rather than multiple times per season; both crankshaft and valvespring life would
be extended dramatically; and most ignition and all carburetor maintenance would be eliminated.
The complete Honda FF kit is expected to sell for under $12,000. The package would include a base L15A7 engine,
FF race kit (including intake, exhaust, dry sump, restrictor plate and ECU), and a bolt-in chassis kit, to permit installation
of the engine without welding or other major modifications. Individual component parts would also be available
for purchase separately.
Editor Notes: Strategy and mechanics aside, replacement of the iconic Ford 1600 cc crossflow engine in a long running
racing class that bears its name, may require a deep breath to fully absorb. Ford was contacted for comment, but
at press deadline, had not responded to our inquiry. The Honda proof of concept and running prototype demonstrate
the feasibility of the overall objective.Honda has worked hard to duplicate the current FF engine profile (114 HP @
6800 RPM) in order to maintain parity with the Ford engines. Is “Formula Fit” the solution to the anticipated demise of
FF engine parts, or just one of several alternative strategies that is being pursued? Time will tell.

Road America in mid-July. There were a number of Midwestern Council
competitors in attendance. Notably, Jack Bartelt and his Lola T540 were
featured in the Lola tent. Pete Wood commented on the race, “Oh, for
those who weren’t there, the race was a ball. 98 cars started, I went
from 53rd to 35th in class with plenty of action along the way. Not for
the faint of heart, nor would I do it weekly.”
