The highly anticipated follow-up to the international blockbuster The Starbucks Experience
ABOUT THE BOOK
Joseph Michelli, author of the blockbuster The Starbucks Experience, explains the leadership
principles that drove the iconic coffee company’s resurgence from serious setbacks during the global
recession—one of the few true turnaround stories of this time.
Michelli establishes five simple principles that Starbucks applied to build long-term global
sustainability—Savor and Elevate, Love to Be Loved, Reach for Common Ground, Mobilize the
Connection, Cherish and Challenge Your Legacy—which can be used in any company, in any
industry.
Leading the Starbucks Way reveals that it is easier to build success than to sustain success. Where Schultz's book
told the personal leadership side of this story, Michelli's book reveals how this happened on a global leadership scale
through 5 principles that can be any company of any size that wants to build a sustainable business focused on
continually innovating human experiences. Leading the Starbucks Way, unlike its predecessors, will anchor all
business principles to two overarching and inextricably linked themes of "love" and "responsibility." Love without
responsible behavior reflects nothing more than a business platitude. For example, some leaders talk about loving
customers or loving employees only to abandon that so-called "love" in difficult times. Responsibility without love can
reflect a pragmatic or transactional approach to business that often is devoid of powerful emotional connections and
a spirit of "otherness." A lack of business love is a liability in achieving long-term success.
Management Efficacy: Wisdom from the Indian Bhagavad Gita
ABOUT THE BOOK
Among the many diaspora, the Chinese and Indian have larger networks and rich documentation on
strategy. Sun Zi’s Art of War, Admiral Zheng He’s Art of Collaboration and Genghis Khan’s Art of
Winning are famous Chinese wisdom already applied to business. The Indians have their Machiavelli
named Chanakya or Kautilya, whose book Arthashastra expounded the Mandala Principle: “the
enemy’s enemy is a friend.” While Kautilya focuses on statecraft, there is an even older document
regarding conflict called The Bhagavad Gita. The concept of detachment advocated in The Gita is
similar to (but not the same as) the Taoist Wu-Wei principle of non-doing. Both support universal
harmony and are evident in business activities for Corporate Social Responsibility. This book is an
East-East convergence of ideas to highlight key aspects of Chinese and Indian thinking in managing
expectations.
Part 1 will highlight the main features in managing conflict. This is followed by Part 2 to link the
findings with knowledge management and value innovation. Part 3 then concludes with the
essentials to thrive in turbulent times.
In summary, the efficacy in management can be condensed into merely two words: “just right” or
simply “mindfulness”. The main components are resilience in delivery, opportunity for deliverables
and detachment from results. For companies, the basic tenet is to link resources with
resourcefulness. For individuals, the key tenets can be summarized into three perspectives:
(a) Everyone has an inner firmness of purpose;
(b) Relationships are not available until enabled; and
(c) There is inaction in action.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Dr Charles Chow worked in the military, the police and the government before joining the private
sector. As the first Singaporean to be trained by the German Navy, he was put in command of a
Singapore Navy ship, and later helped set up the Singapore Police Coast Guard. After 15 years of
uniform service, Dr Chow joined the Singapore Trade Development Board, where he headed the
Singapore-India Business Network and was responsible for drafting Singapore’s strategy for doing
business in India. In 1996, Dr Chow founded the East-West Group which secures the strategic
interests of high potentials in Germany and India in education and the environment. Although a
Roman Catholic, he has discovered great wisdom in The Bhagavad Gita and its relevance to
management efficacy.
ABOUT THE BOOK
For all its good intentions, Who Moved My Cheese? basically reduces us to mice in a maze sniffing
after cheese. Don’t ask why you’re in a maze, don’t ask what makes the cheese move, just keep
your head down and find it. And yet, success in areas such as innovation, entrepreneurship,
creativity, problem solving, and business growth often depends on the ability to challenge
assumptions, reshape the environment, and play by a different set of rules (your own!).
Harvard Business School professor Deepak Malhorta uses a fable involving a different set of mice
in a maze—mice who question everything—to help readers see how they underestimate their
ability change the rules, overcome the constraints they face, and control their own destiny.
Malhotra encourages readers to audit their assumptions about what limitations they really face and
which are self-imposed or unthinkingly accepted. We can create the circumstances and realities we
want –we can go beyond simply changing our behavior (find that new cheese!) to changing the
game itself. But to do so we need to understand the ways we’re holding ourselves back. As one of
the characters in the book says, “the problem is not that the mouse is in the maze, but that the
maze is in the mouse.”
Leverage internal and external business relationships to boost individual influence—and
organizational success
ABOUT THE BOOK
The Five Keys of Powerful Business Relationships explains how to recognize relationships that aren’t
generating their full potential—and make them work. It provides five practical methods for
improving relationships with team members, coworkers, customers, and partners guaranteed to
boost efficiency and productivity.
Sherman and Sperry return with a powerful guide to building and leveraging cross-departmental,
cross-team, and intra-team relationships. Drawing on the same concepts that drove the success of
their book, Seven Keys to Managing Strategic Accounts, the authors show readers how use their
within-company relationships to become more productive, more effective, more efficient, and more
influential. The book will show readers how to recognize relationships that are not generating their
full power, and how to apply the five keys to those critical relationships in order to improve personal
and managerial development.
The authors present proven best practices and habits that individuals and firms can use to eliminate
critical barriers to performance, thereby boosting the energy of individuals, teams, groups, and
companies. Some of these barriers are cultural, some are related to a company's infrastructure, and
others are due to lack of awareness, effective practices and habits.
ABOUT THE BOOK
The Respect Effect reveals the transformational power of respect in the workplace through
neuroscience applied to employee engagement. It provides extensive research showing that the
brain performs at the highest level when treated with respect, but when emotionally attacked by
disrespectful behavior the brain shuts down.
Meshanko translates this knowledge into a proven method that helps managers pinpoint areas in
which they need to improve. His tested strategy helps managers understand the initial, biological
reactions to what people say and do, and teaches how to create positive situations, avoid negative
ABOUT THE BOOK
The first practical guide to implementing positive leadership, which helps leaders in all types of
organizations reach beyond ordinary success to achieve extraordinary effectiveness, spectacular
results, and positively deviant performance.
The recent emphasis on positive leadership has revolutionized traditional approaches to leading and
managing. Producing extraordinarily high performance, generating positively deviant results—that
are dramatically better than normal—and creating remarkable vitality in the workplace are the most
frequent consequences of positive leadership. Empirical research by Kim Cameron has confirmed
these outcomes, but the lingering question is “how?” What specifically can leaders do to practice
positive leadership?
This book provides five proven practices—tools and techniques—for practicing positive leadership.
These tools and techniques have been confirmed as highly successful in leading individual
employees and organizations to attain extraordinarily high levels of flourishing and effectiveness.
They build on and supplement Kim Cameron’s previous book, Positive Leadership, which outlined
the theory but, in the interest of brevity, omitted details about implementation. Developmental
exercises and action activities associated with each positive practice are provided in the book to
help the practices become instantly implementable.
Play dumb. Be boring. Don't solve problems. Respond with weakness . . .
ABOUT THE BOOK
Proven counterintuitive ways for communicating meaningfully and productively in today’s
oversaturated digital environment
Stop Talking, Start Communicating turns conventional wisdom on its head to help you navigate a
world dominated by powerful technological devices that are eroding our vital communication skills.
Quick, cheap, and easy means of "staying connected" come with dangerous consequences. They
discourage reflection, restraint, and thoughtfulness, offer little incentive to get a message right the
first time, and facilitate the constant interruptions and distractions that dramatically multiply
conversational errors.
Stop Talking, Start Communicating combines scientific research with realistic practice to deliver
counterintuitive but highly effective communication strategies, such as Don’t Be Yourself (your first
communication response is usually your worst), Don't Solve Problems (resist the urge to handle every
issue that comes your way), and Play Dumb (give people an opportunity to self-correct).
The 5 keys to building more value in your company from the ground up
ABOUT THE BOOK
Great work lives inside all of us. The question is: Do we make the contributions we’re capable of? Is
our best work getting out there? Making waves? Creating a difference the world loves?
We’ve long been told our ability to succeed depends on our job title, social status, gender, I.Q., or
when and where we were born. Great Work turns that conventional thinking on its head to reveal
innovation can come from anyone, anywhere. Especially you.
With insights from the largest-ever study of award-winning work, Great Work reveals five practical
skills that will help you become a difference maker at work. You’ll learn to make improvements that
delight customers, inspire team members, help your company grow, and put a spark in your career.
Great Work is filled with stories of real people in real jobs who did the work they were assigned and
then shattered expectations to deliver better-than-asked-for results. The differences they’ve made
will inspire you. Better still, they’ll teach you how to make a difference of your own.
From the organization behind The Carrot Principle and other national bestsellers that taught the
world’s managers to recognize great work, this book will help a new generation of readers do work
worth recognizing.
Learn the secrets for ensuring a happy, healthy life after work: INTERNATIONAL INVESTING
ABOUT THE BOOK
SeekingAlpha.com contributor Aaron Katsman presents a novel approach to help you both grow and
protect your hard earned savings—with a special focus on international investing. It provides a
fresh approach to asset allocation, taking into account the fact that the world's strong economic
growth is not based in the U.S. and explains how to incorporate various assets, including
international investing, to generate income needed to have a comfortable retirement.
SeekingAlpha.com contributor Aaron Katsman helps baby boomers and other retirement planners
use global investing to ensure a happy, healthy life after work
• Most retirement investing guides call for limited foreign exposure in portfolios; because strong
economic growth is no longer based in the U.S., this book provides a critical alternative,
showing investors why and how they should place more focus on investing internationally
• The book includes budgeting worksheets, an investment profile questionnaire, and many
visual aids to help readers make simple sense of this new approach to retirement investing
In collaboration with AARP—the baby boomer’s guide to having open, honest financial
conversations about sensitive issues with their adult children
ABOUT THE BOOK
The first of its kind—a dignified approach to dealing with the tough issues and decisions
that will confront parents and their children
It’s a rite of passage for parents to have the Talk with their children about the beginning of life (as in
the birds and the bees). As they get older, however, parents need to have the other talk—that is,
about the end of life. And they need to have it now, not after a crisis hits.
The Other Talk gives readers the inspiration, practical advice, and communication tools they need to
have open, honest discussions with their adult children on difficult subjects. This book breaks new
ground in the life-planning field by empowering baby boomers to take control of the rest of their lives
now, rather than waiting for their kids to take charge.
