The Parks and Recreation Department for the <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Charlottetown</strong> will strive<br />

to enhance the quality <strong>of</strong> life for the people who live and work within our<br />

municipality, as well as for those who visit. We will encourage and provide<br />

the leadership for the development <strong>of</strong> safe, accessible, diverse and high quality<br />

VOLUNTEERS<br />

Volunteer <strong>of</strong> the Month Award<br />

To recognize volunteers who have made outstanding contributions to Recreation,<br />

Sport, and Leisure within the <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Charlottetown</strong>, the <strong>Charlottetown</strong> Parks<br />

and Recreation Department “Volunteer <strong>of</strong> the Month Award” was launched in<br />

January 2006.<br />

Nomination forms can be picked up at <strong>Charlottetown</strong> Parks and Recreation<br />

Department within <strong>City</strong> Hall – 199 Queen Street.<br />

Volunteer Interest<br />

Volunteers are required to deliver many <strong>of</strong> the recreation/sport-based programs<br />

<strong>of</strong>fered in our community (i.e., minor sports, special events, and many other<br />

CHARLOTTETOWN FAMILY VIOLENCE PREVENTION<br />

The <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Charlottetown</strong> is committed to preventing Family Violence.<br />

What is meant by family violence? It is any violence by one family member<br />

against another. Family violence includes, but is not limited to:<br />

- violence by one partner against another - violence by a parent against a child<br />

- violence by a child against a parent - violence between brother and sisters<br />

Family violence is an abuse <strong>of</strong> power within relationships <strong>of</strong> family, trust<br />

or dependency. It always involves someone using their power over another<br />

person in a way that is hurtful. There are different types <strong>of</strong> violence - physical,<br />

emotional, financial, or verbal abuse.<br />

DIRECT DELIVERY PROGRAMS<br />

Direct Delivery Programs are those that are operated and <strong>of</strong>fered directly by the<br />

<strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Charlottetown</strong> Parks and Recreation Department.<br />

CANCELLATIONS (Direct Delivery Program)<br />

The <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Charlottetown</strong> Parks and Recreation Department reserves the right<br />

to cancel or alter any program information outlined in this brochure without<br />

prior notice.<br />

PROGRAM REGISTRATIONS (Direct Delivery Programs)<br />

Two convenient options:<br />

ON-LINE: Register on-line via the <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Charlottetown</strong>’s Website: www.<br />

charlottetown.ca. Once you have entered the main home page go to Quick Links<br />

then Program Online Registration. It’s never been easier!<br />

IN PERSON: In person registrations will be accepted at the Parks and<br />

Recreation Department Administration Office (1st floor <strong>City</strong> Hall) during regular<br />

working hours and at scheduled registration locations / dates.<br />

Payment may be made by Cash, Cheque, Visa, Master Card, or Interact - Please<br />

make all cheques payable to the <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Charlottetown</strong>.<br />

NOTE:<br />

Registrations will be accepted for Summer Programs starting May 1 with the<br />

exception <strong>of</strong> Outdoor Adventure Camp registrations, which will be accepted<br />

starting May 31.<br />

PROGRAM REFUNDS (Direct Delivery Programs)<br />

Program refunds will not be issued once a program begins. Requests for a<br />

refund must be received a minimum <strong>of</strong> 48 hours prior to the start <strong>of</strong> the program.<br />

A $5.00 administration fee will be held for each registration that is refunded.<br />

PROGRAM STAFF (Direct Delivery Programs)<br />

<strong>Charlottetown</strong> Parks and Recreation Department program staff receive extensive<br />

training in such areas as programming, organizational and leadership skills,<br />

active and leisure game implementation, child and group management, and other<br />

areas that are relevant to program operation, including Emergency First Aid<br />

and CPR certification. The summer staff is trained in High Five – Principles <strong>of</strong><br />

Healthy Child Development, a national recognized program.<br />

SPORT FIELD USERS PERMISSION<br />

Organizations and the general public are asked to refrain from using<br />

<strong>City</strong> operated sport fields unless permission has been obtained from the<br />

<strong>Charlottetown</strong> Parks and Recreation Department. Unauthorized use, especially<br />

during the early spring and late fall months when wet conditions prevail, will<br />

cause severe damage to natural grass sport fields. Your cooperation is very much<br />

appreciated. To obtain permission to use a sport field, please contact the Program<br />

Coordinator at 629-4028 or email fquinn@charlottetown.ca.<br />

New for 2012, all requests for the use <strong>of</strong> the UPEI Artificial Turf Field must be<br />

made directly through UPEI. The tentative opening date for the season is April<br />

NO SMOKING<br />

The <strong>Charlottetown</strong> Parks and Recreation Department is pleased to provide a<br />

smoke free environment in our recreational facilities. No person shall smoke<br />

in any recreational facility other than in a designated area if provided. By-law:<br />

TOBACCO FREE POLICY<br />

The <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Charlottetown</strong> has adopted a Tobacco Free Policy for Indoor and<br />

Outdoor Recreation and Sport Facilities, which went into effect January 1,<br />

2009. The <strong>City</strong> believes that through public awareness and education, we can<br />

encourage users and the general public to respect the health <strong>of</strong> everyone and<br />

create a healthy environment at <strong>City</strong> owned and operated indoor and<br />

outdoor facilities.<br />

PET OWNERS<br />

We all appreciate clean walkways, park facilities and open spaces. Please be a<br />

PRE-SCHOOL<br />

INTRO TO SPORTS PROGRAM<br />

The <strong>Charlottetown</strong> Parks and Recreation Department will once again be <strong>of</strong>fering<br />

their Intro to Sports Program to children between the ages <strong>of</strong> 3 – 7 years old.<br />

This is an inclusive program that gives children an opportunity to try a sport<br />

or practice a sport they enjoy. Participation in this program will give children<br />

<strong>of</strong> all abilities the opportunity to try and experience a variety <strong>of</strong> sports and help<br />

develop their skills.<br />

Please note that there is limited space in the program and your child must be 3<br />

years old by the start <strong>of</strong> the program!<br />

Dates: Programs will start on Monday, June 25 and end on Saturday,<br />

August 18, 2012.<br />

BRIGHT FUTURES CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTRE<br />

Bright Futures Child Development Centre, located at 200 Richmond Street in<br />

<strong>Charlottetown</strong>, accepts children ages infant to 4 years old. The centre is open<br />

Monday to Friday from 7:15 AM to 5:30 PM. The program includes bowling,<br />

creative activities, gym activities and much more. Bright Futures <strong>of</strong>fers a Pre -<br />

Kindergarten program in September from 8:45 – 11:15 AM for children 4 years<br />

old.<br />

CAREGIVER AND TOT PROGRAM<br />

Offered by Four Neighborhoods Community Health Centre, located at 152 St.<br />

Peter's Rd. The program is designed for children - birth to 4 years <strong>of</strong> age to have<br />

an opportunity to interact with other children. It is our goal to increase parent's<br />

positive parenting skills. It's a great chance for parents/caregivers to meet their<br />

neighbours, to exchange helpful parenting tips and to develop a support network.<br />

Activities include stories, games, crafts & a nutritious snack. Group meets<br />

Monday & Thursday 9:30-11:30AM September - June<br />

Just for You Children’s Centre is an early years centre at 51 Watts Avenue in the<br />

West Royalty Business Park. We accept children from infants up to school age.<br />

Our program places an emphasis on Early Literacy, Early Numeracy, Science and<br />

Creative Arts.<br />

CONFEDERATION CENTRE ART GALLERY<br />

Visual Art Summer Camps<br />

The Confederation Centre’s Visual Arts Summer Camps are a fun-filled<br />

week <strong>of</strong> art exploration and creation. The Centre's fully equipped Schurman<br />

Family Studio is the ideal place to be immersed in creativity, working with<br />

trained visual art educators in an enriching environment. With access to the<br />

Confederation Centre Art Gallery, your young art enthusiast will explore, create<br />

and have fun! Each week ends with an exhibition <strong>of</strong> your child's artwork. Art<br />

Day Camps run July 4 – August 24, Monday through Friday.<br />

Performing Arts Summer Camps<br />

Come and play with us as we explore the world <strong>of</strong> drama, music, and dance.<br />

Discover the magic <strong>of</strong> life under the lights, and let your imagination soar! Our<br />

camps and specialty programs encourage creativity, self-confidence and team<br />

building in a pr<strong>of</strong>essional setting. Each camp ends with a demonstration <strong>of</strong> the<br />

new skills your child has acquired. For ages 7 and up. Performing Arts Summer<br />

Camps run July 3 – August 24<br />

Join us in September for dance umbrella<br />

Dance umbrella <strong>of</strong>fers a variety <strong>of</strong> programs, including creative movement<br />

for preschoolers over three years, ballet, modern dance, jazz, tap and musical<br />

theatre. Classes begin in September. Registration for fall programs starts in early<br />

August.<br />

Confederation Centre Youth Chorus<br />

For boys and girls ages 8 – 14, who love to sing and want to develop their<br />

musical skills.<br />

POTTERY IN THE PARK<br />

PEI Potters Studio in Victoria Park (small white house next to tennis courts)<br />

Children’s Class<br />

A class for children aged 9-14 will be held on Saturday afternoons. While<br />

creative exploration with clay is stressed, the class will provide beginners with<br />

the basics <strong>of</strong> clay preparation, a variety <strong>of</strong> hand-building techniques, glazing<br />

and decorating and an introduction to wheel throwing. Students with previous<br />

experience may focus more on wheel throwing. The class is taught by an<br />

experienced potter and is small in size (maximum <strong>of</strong> 8). It is designed to be fun<br />

as well as educational. Participants will get a thorough introduction to the art <strong>of</strong><br />

pottery making and have fun while creating their own pieces from start to finish.<br />

Registration will be held on Tuesday, April 10, 2012 from 5:30 to 7:30 PM<br />

at the studio<br />

The SPMBA <strong>of</strong>fers a baseball program for children ages 5 - 18 years (T-Ball to<br />

MURPHY’S COMMUNITY CENTRE<br />

Located in the heart <strong>of</strong> downtown <strong>Charlottetown</strong>, the Murphy’s Community<br />

Centre houses the largest bowling alley on PEI. Murphy’s Bowling Centre has<br />

been the hub <strong>of</strong> bowling on the Island for over 40 years. The Centre’s 14 lanes<br />

<strong>of</strong> five pin bowling <strong>of</strong>fers open, regular, and glow-in-the dark bowling, as well<br />

The Rigid Riders are a Cycling PEI sanctioned mountain bike club committed<br />

to providing mountain bike opportunities and teaching technical riding skills to<br />

night rain or shine May through September at the Hillsborough Park Community<br />

outdoor ethics & respect for the environment or the Boating program (ages<br />

Y’s MEN SUMMER DAY CAMP PROGRAM<br />

Our weekly day camp places an emphasis on fun, group games, art & crafts,<br />

sports, tours, swimming, and a weekly trip to various beaches etc. Each week<br />

our camp has a different theme.<br />

Our hours <strong>of</strong> operations are 7:30AM- 5:30PM Monday to Friday. We <strong>of</strong>fer a<br />

pizza day and a hot dog day.<br />

Registration fee is $50 ($25 <strong>of</strong> this fee goes toward the first week fees). Cost per<br />

week is $110 or $23 per day. We are located at the Sherwood Rec Hall (ONLY)<br />

Public Access Computers<br />

There are several public access computers in the Children’s Library. Four<br />

computers are connected to the Internet, so parents need to sign an Internet<br />

Acceptable Use Policy Form for each child. Parents should register children<br />

in person. A computer with Internet may be booked for one hour per day. You<br />

may call ahead to book a computer. There are also two Early Literacy Stations<br />

(which are not hooked up to the Internet), which have a wide range <strong>of</strong> programs<br />

for entertainment and learning. Discover Tumblebooks at the library this<br />

summer. The Tumble Book Library is a collection <strong>of</strong> animated; talking picture<br />

books, which teach children the joy <strong>of</strong> reading in a format, they’ll love.<br />

Athletes can become a member <strong>of</strong> the PEITTA at anytime; registration is<br />

only $100, which also includes liability insurance. Practices are scheduled on<br />

Monday for novice players and Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursdays for advanced<br />

players from 6:30 –8:30PM. Thursday evenings are for recreational leagues and<br />

Saturday’s are for players who are trying out for provincial teams. In April the<br />

association will be hosting a pre game tryouts for team selections for the Atlantic<br />

Championships being held in St Johns, Newfoundland. Qualifiers from these<br />

championships will be attending the national championship in British Columbia<br />

The <strong>Charlottetown</strong> Skate Park features a variety <strong>of</strong> concrete and polyboard<br />

ramps for beginners and the more skilled skaters.<br />

CULTURAL CONNECTIONS PROGRAM NATIVE COUNCIL OF PEI<br />

The Cultural Connections Program is funded by Canadian Heritage through<br />

the Cultural Connections for Aboriginal Youth funding initiative. It is a safe<br />

and secure environment for youth to gain a sense <strong>of</strong> belonging, enhance their<br />

self-esteem and to assist in their personal development through youth driven<br />

planning and implementation <strong>of</strong> cultural, educational, social and recreational<br />

activities. Our target group is Aboriginal youth between the ages <strong>of</strong> 10-29 and<br />

their non-Aboriginal friends. There is no registration fee or cost for any program<br />

or activity.<br />

Sweat Lodge Ceremony, attending Pow Wow’s, Regalia Making, weekly drum<br />

Two 9 -week line-dancing programs will be taking place at the West Royalty<br />

LIVING A HEALTHY LIFE<br />

Living a healthy life is a six-week self-management education program. It is<br />

a fun and practical program that helps people with ongoing conditions (such<br />

as diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis, heart disease, etc) overcome daily<br />

challenges and maintain active, full lives.<br />

Groups meet once a week over a six week period. Topics include managing<br />

symptoms, healthy eating, exercise, better communication, and how to make<br />

daily tasks easier. The program costs $10 and participants receive a copy <strong>of</strong> the<br />

book: Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions.<br />

<strong>Charlottetown</strong> Recreation Tennis Group (CRTG)<br />

The <strong>Charlottetown</strong> Recreation Tennis Club (non-pr<strong>of</strong>it) was created to<br />

provide recreational to competitive tennis opportunities for adults and youth<br />

<strong>Charlottetown</strong> at the Victoria Park Tennis Courts. The CRTG uses 3 to 5 <strong>of</strong><br />

the 8 lit courts during weeknight evenings May 19 – October 30 and <strong>of</strong>fers a<br />

variety <strong>of</strong> tennis activities including leagues, round robins and socials. Summer<br />

membership is only $65 and includes a Tennis PEI membership. For non<br />

members to play the cost is a $10 guest fee per evening.<br />

TRAILBLAZERS WALKING CLUB<br />

The benefits <strong>of</strong> walking are endless. Walking helps keep you active and<br />

healthy. This club allows for the 50 plus <strong>of</strong> the community to get to know their<br />

neighbours and keep fit at the same time. We meet every Mon, Wed and Fri ~<br />

8AM at the Ch'town Civic Centre: inside Oct-April and outside May-Sept on the<br />

Confederation Trail. The group meets at 8:30am for c<strong>of</strong>fee on the 1st Wed. <strong>of</strong><br />

every month in our Community Room at our CHC following the morning walk.<br />

FOOTCARE CLINIC<br />

Offered the 1st Friday <strong>of</strong> each month at the Four Neighbourhood Community<br />

Health Centre, 152 St. Peters Road. Our foot care clinic aims to keep your feet<br />

in good shape, so that you can stay healthy and active. Registered footcare<br />

nurses provide this service. Cost is $25 and appointments are required. Services<br />

include basic nail care, skin care advice, general health teaching and referrals to<br />

appropriate resources as required. People attending are asked to bring their own<br />

towel and have proper foot hygiene (shower or bath) before appointment.<br />

PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES<br />

PARASPORT AND RECREATION PEI INC.<br />

ParaSport and Recreation PEI is a volunteer, non-pr<strong>of</strong>it and charitable sport<br />

organization that provides recreation and sport opportunities for individuals with<br />

a physical disability on PEI. There are programs available for people <strong>of</strong> all ages<br />

and abilities. Spring and summer programs include, Aqua Abilities (swimming<br />

lessons for children with a disability), and Bridging the Gap (Sport Have- A-Go<br />

AQUATICS<br />

SUMMER OUTDOOR SWIMMING POOLS<br />

The <strong>Charlottetown</strong> Parks and Recreation Department operates the Simmons<br />

and Victoria Park pools and <strong>of</strong>fers public swimming to the general public. Fully<br />

qualified lifeguards are employed at each facility to ensure user safety.<br />

VICTORIA PARK POOL:<br />

Open seven days a week from 11:00 AM until 7:45 PM There is no cost to use<br />

the pool but to ensure your safety we do have a limit <strong>of</strong> 65 people allowed in the<br />

pool at one time. Four times a day the pool will be closed for 10 minute periods<br />

to allow the staff to complete required pool checks and cleaning. These breaks<br />

will occur at 12:20, 1:50, 3:20 and 4:50 PM. This pool will open on June 25,<br />

2012.<br />

CANADIAN RED CROSS – SUMMER WATER SAFETY DAY CAMPS<br />

Hey Parents and children, it is time to start planning your summer fun!<br />

The Canadian Red Cross will be holding their ever-popular Water Safety Day<br />

camps in <strong>Charlottetown</strong>. Learn to save a life this summer! It's more than just a<br />

summer camp; we teach skills that last a lifetime.<br />

Summer day camps will run this year from August 13 – 24 (2 weeks, 1/2 day<br />

program) with swimming location TBA and at Pondside Park. Transportation at<br />

various pick up points is included. Our day camp is unique to PEI and provides<br />

1 level <strong>of</strong> swimming lessons along with either the JOC (Junior Outdoors Club),<br />

Nature Kids, or the Small Craft Water Safety Program.<br />

WEST ROYALTY COMMUNITY CENTRE GYM RENTALS<br />

Individuals or groups wishing to rent the Community Centre gym can do so<br />

Limited gym time is available to rent at $30 (plus GST) per hour for sport related<br />

activities, $40 (plus GST) per hour for non-sport related activities. As well gym<br />

time is available on Saturday afternoons between 3 – 5 PM for children’s birthday<br />

CARI (Capital Area Recreation Inc)<br />

The CARI Complex <strong>of</strong>fers a great variety <strong>of</strong> sport and recreational opportunities<br />

to <strong>Charlottetown</strong> and surrounding area. Offering an aquatics facility which<br />

includes a 25 metre competition pool, 25 metre free-form leisure pool, toddler<br />

pool and whirlpool; this facility also includes a 142 foot waterslide, 2 one<br />

metre diving boards, 1 three metre diving board, water toys, a tarzan rope<br />

and moveable floor that is completely wheelchair accessible. In addition the<br />

Complex is home to the MacLauchlan Arena, which houses 2 NHL sized ice<br />

surfaces complete with 12 shared dressing rooms, on site skate sharpening<br />

service and Andrews Hockey Growth Programs. To compliment this assembly <strong>of</strong><br />

activities, East Side Mario's Express and the Seniors Active Living Centre also<br />

call the CARI Complex home. Located on the University campus, there is no<br />

shortage <strong>of</strong> action and something for everyone!<br />

MURPHYS COMMUNITY CENTRE<br />

Murphy’s Community Centre has operated for over 40 years as Basilica<br />

Recreation Centre and has a long history as a social and recreational hub in<br />

downtown <strong>Charlottetown</strong>. Since 2006, the Centre has been proudly operated by<br />

Ray & Carolyn Murphy <strong>of</strong> Murphy’s Pharmacies. Murphy’s Community Centre<br />

operates as a non-pr<strong>of</strong>it organization with a mandate to increase and improve the<br />

recreation and social opportunities for families living in <strong>Charlottetown</strong> and all <strong>of</strong><br />

Prince Edward Island.<br />

The Community Centre continues to support many community groups who<br />

<strong>of</strong>fer their programs to the public such as Taoist Tai Chi, Al-Anon, CHANCES,<br />

Old Time Square Dancing, Special Olympics, Canadian Council <strong>of</strong> the Blind,<br />

PEI Scrabble Club, and many more. The Centre also supports many community<br />

groups, families, and individuals who utilize the Centre for meetings, private<br />

gatherings, special events and fundraisers.<br />

The Community Centre continues to provide and enhance its commercial<br />

activities, which include, bowling, licensed lounge, catering and bar service,<br />

facility rentals, licensed after school and day camp programs. The well<br />

established community service programs are continuing with new programs<br />

being <strong>of</strong>fered on a regular basis such as our new “Art for all Ages”. We are<br />

excited to <strong>of</strong>fer family Art Shop and family Sewing Studio courses to families in<br />

the community! We are always looking to expand the courses we <strong>of</strong>fer and are<br />

THE ADVENTURE GROUP<br />

The Adventure Group is a non-pr<strong>of</strong>it organization, which was incorporated in<br />

1992 to address the needs <strong>of</strong> youth and their parents on Prince Edward Island as<br />

identified in a number <strong>of</strong> major studies. The goal <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Adventure Group is to <strong>of</strong>fer opportunities for learning as well as personal and<br />

skill development using experiential, service learning and adventure based<br />

curriculum. Our focus is on prevention; we provide opportunities that increase<br />

self-esteem, confidence, and leadership skills. We work in partnership with<br />

youth, police, service agencies, schools, businesses and government <strong>of</strong> all levels.<br />

The Adventure Group's <strong>of</strong>fice is located at Heartz Hall on St. Peters Road.<br />

R.O.P.E.S. WORKSHOPS...Our philosophy is called R.O.P.E or Rite <strong>of</strong><br />

Passage experience. The goal <strong>of</strong> the program is to <strong>of</strong>fer participants an<br />

adventure experience that requires them to develop team skills such as effective<br />

communication, problem solving, trust building, leadership, and cooperative<br />

learning.<br />

VICTORIAPARKFOREST RESTORATION PROJECT<br />

The Victoria Park Forest Restoration Project began in the spring <strong>of</strong> 2006.<br />

The goals <strong>of</strong> the project are to improve the health <strong>of</strong> the woodlands, provide<br />

better habitat for urban wildlife, help curb the spread <strong>of</strong> invasive plant species,<br />

increase environmental awareness and make the park more beautiful.<br />

CITY TRAILS<br />

Routes for Nature and Health Trial System<br />

A 20-km walking and cycling trail system travels throughout the <strong>City</strong> and<br />

connects various neighborhoods and communities within the <strong>City</strong>. The<br />

Confederation Trail within <strong>City</strong> limit is part <strong>of</strong> this trail system network.<br />

Confederation Trail<br />

A multi-purpose path, that runs from east to west, from tip to tip <strong>of</strong> the Island.<br />

The trail is part <strong>of</strong> the cross Canada trail system. Located on an abandoned rail<br />

bed, the trail accommodates walking, hiking, cycling, jogging, and wheelchairs<br />

on a rolled stone dust surface. An 11-km section <strong>of</strong> the trail runs through the city<br />

core, starting at Grafton Street East.<br />

Boardwalk<br />

For one <strong>of</strong> our more scenic trails, the boardwalk takes you along the<br />

<strong>Charlottetown</strong> waterfront overlooking the harbour entrance and the meeting<br />

point <strong>of</strong> the North, West, and Hillsborough Rivers.<br />

The Victoria Park boardwalk is part <strong>of</strong> a larger boardwalk, sidewalk, walking<br />

trail system from Confederation Landing Park to the Victoria Park lighthouse.<br />

Much <strong>of</strong> the boardwalk hugs the waterfront. This walking trail is open year<br />

round for thousands <strong>of</strong> <strong>Charlottetown</strong> residents and visitors. The boardwalk is<br />

lighted to allow people to enjoy evening walks. This is part <strong>of</strong> the Routes for<br />

Nature and Health Trail System.<br />
