Surveys are used to find people’s preferences <strong>and</strong> opinions, <strong>and</strong><br />
many companies use the results to plan their marketing for<br />
products. Percents are often used to report survey results. Sampling<br />
helps provide a guide to the thoughts of many people by surveying<br />
a smaller group that represents the whole.<br />
Think About It<br />
Suppose your school has 75 girls <strong>and</strong> 200 boys between the ages of<br />
ten <strong>and</strong> twelve. Should your sample include more girls’ opinions or<br />
boys’ opinions? Why?<br />
Suppose 200 students chose s<strong>and</strong>wiches as their favorite school lunch<br />
out of a total 1,000 students. How would you write the results?<br />
