In the Heart Onder het hart Waterland Film, The Netherlands Masha (37) is in an intense relationship with Luuk, divorced and father of two. Nothing seems to stand in their way until Luuk becomes incurably ill, leaving Masha without status. Synopsis Masha (37) meets Luuk (47) in the butterfly garden where she works as a biologist. Luuk, recently divorced, accidentally sits on a butterfly. The way that he apologises in the presence of his daughters, Fleur (11) and Sofie (15), clearly indicates that Masha and Luuk are well matched and that this is no ordinary encounter. An overwhelming infatuation develops. But there are obstacles. Since his divorce, Luuk has been living in a chalet in a holiday park. He regularly has his children over and Sofie is not pleased with Masha’s presence in Luuk’s life. Luuk has trouble deciding who to be loyal to. His ex-wife, Suzanne, visits Masha uninvited in the butterfly garden. If Masha is not serious about Luuk then quit right away, is Suzanne’s message. But Masha is very serious indeed. Luuk and her are deeply in love. Luuk suggests they find a place for the two of them together, despite all their obstacles. But the next day Luuk doesn’t show up for their appointment. He is in hospital and it’s serious. The whole situation is turned upside down. Masha isn’t allowed to see him; she has no status. Luuk decides that his sickbed will be in his former house with his children. A painful decision for all - but Masha, it is decided, will be tolerated at the sickbed. She regularly visits him, and sometimes all four women are standing around Luuk’s bed together, which is extremely uncomfortable for each of them. Then Luuk dies. After Masha and Sofie accidentally meet at Luuk’s chalet, the two continue to make contact and a sense of mutual understanding develops. This enables both of them to go forward. Masha now also has the courage to go and see Suzanne, but they are unable to comfort each other. They will each have to go their own separate way. Director’s statement I believe a universal story can have individuality, such as Another Year by Mike Leigh, creating authentic characters we can sympathise with and whose lives we can understand, using cinematic narrative means without them getting too stylised or abstract. Most importantly, In the Heart is an actor’s film. This is what interests scriptwriter Peer Wittenbols and me. I didn’t seek out a writer who examines interpersonal relationships for no reason. And although I’ve made different types of film in the past, most of those films are about interpersonal relationships, genuine personalities and beautiful and surprising acting. This goes for Richting West as well as for Patatje Oorlog, but also for Deining, Genade or Het Ravijn. Each film is a new search for authentic stories in which accessibility and individuality compete with each other, in which I’m looking for a way to express emotion without totally forgetting the lightness (even if it’s in nothing more than a dead butterfly…).
