A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN
As I complete my second year as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, I have never been
more enthusiastic about the positive direction in which Wentworth Institute of Technology
is heading.
In 2006, Wentworth unveiled six strategic initiatives to launch the Institute into the next
100 years. This plan, created with every aspect of the school in mind, was developed
after careful consideration and research by the Board of Trustees, the administration,
and all members of the Wentworth community. I am pleased to report that much has
been accomplished to bring these plans to fruition.
“Our students,
faculty, and
academic programs
continue to shine
as we fulfill
increasing global
demand for
technical expertise.”
Students, faculty, and staff have dedicated themselves to the pursuit of improving the
learning outcomes, environments, and experiences for those attending Wentworth in
both the day and evening programs. New and improved student support services
have been introduced to offer academic assistance and guidance, promote personal
development, and ease the transition to college. The Office of Student Affairs has
integrated programs into the first year experience to ensure the success of the students,
and they continue to offer programs for leadership development. The Center
for Teaching and Learning, established in 2006, has proven to be a valuable resource
for both students and faculty alike.
In the academic arena, the Institute is close to receiving approval from one final
accrediting body for offering a master’s degree program in Architecture, which will
represent Wentworth’s first graduate degree program. In addition, the Division of
Professional and Continuing Studies has been expanded to offer enhanced programs,
new certificates, and customized methods of delivery. The campus is undergoing
continuous improvements to laboratories and study areas, enabling students’ access
to more workstations and technologies. A campus master plan is well underway and
promises to achieve Wentworth’s goals and objectives through innovative renovations
and new construction.
Successful outreach programs to the Boston Public Schools are opening up diverse educational
opportunities for urban students, and making the path to college a reality. Wentworth
continues to deepen and strengthen relationships with the community through the Center for
Community and Learning Partnerships and through outreach from the Office of Admissions.
Our students, faculty, and academic programs continue to shine as we fulfill increasing
global demand for technical expertise. At Wentworth, we truly are at the forefront of
today’s changing world.
On behalf of the entire Board of Trustees, I want to thank everyone who has dedicated
themselves to the improvement of Wentworth. I am confident that your commitment
to build upon our success will continue to strengthen the Institute and pay dividends
for years to come.
David W. Kruger, Ph.D.
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
It is truly an exciting time at Wentworth Institute of Technology. Our academic
programs continue to flourish and produce exceptional students who possess the
education and training to make a difference in their chosen fields. In September
2007, we enthusiastically welcomed the largest freshman class in school history and
our enrollment continues to grow. The upcoming addition of new undergraduate and
graduate degree programs provides opportunities for students to choose from an
increased number of academic programs; as with all of our programs, they will
effectively prepare students to enter the workforce and earn an advanced degree.
Initiatives such as these are among the many outstanding examples of Wentworth’s
commitment to academic excellence and the focus on aligning our efforts with the
strategic plan for advancing the leadership position of the Institute.
In addition to the many academic achievements and successes of our students,
faculty, staff, and programs over the past year, the Office of Institutional Advancement
has registered a record number of gifts. In 2008, the total donations and the total
number of individual contributors were the largest in school history and to celebrate
we have included a donor list at the end of this report. We are grateful for the
participation and generosity of so many alumni, corporations, and friends of
Wentworth. In these challenging economic times, this support and dedication is
increasingly important for the continued success of the Institute.
Accomplishing our mission requires continuous improvement and refinement of
the education we offer and effective collaboration across all Institute divisions and
departments. Specialized task forces have been assembled and are hard at work on
major projects related to upgrading facilities, curricula, programs, and services which
will ultimately further improve and transform the entire Wentworth experience. The
results will benefit new and existing students and help to further distinguish Wentworth
in the competitive higher education marketplace.
Once again, Wentworth owes an enormous debt of gratitude to those members of the
Wentworth community who have played a vital role in the success and strategic growth
of the Institute: the Board of Trustees and the Corporators, for their ongoing guidance;
our alumni and friends, for the generous contribution of their time, talents, and gifts;
and the Wentworth faculty and staff, who embody our mission by working every day to
shape today’s students into tomorrow’s leaders.
“From freshmen
registering for their
first classes to adult
learners pursuing
continuing education,
the experience of
being a Wentworth
student is transforming.”
Zorica Pantic´, Ph.D.
1 THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE
A dedicated team of professionals, led by Annamaria Wenner, associate vice president of student affairs and dean
of students, is creating an environment for students to ensure that their Wentworth experience is the best it can be.
Team members are undertaking training, attending conferences, and liaising with their Colleges of the Fenway
counterparts to thoughtfully and respectfully implement support mechanisms for every Wentworth student.
Career Services
Greg Denon, director of career services, reports that over
the last two years, 1,400 co-op assignments were completed
throughout New England and in twelve other states. Wentworth
students also travelled to England, Germany, Scotland, Australia,
and Japan as participants in co-op programs.
Denon states that co-op opportunities for Wentworth students
are expanding, enabling students to be more creative with their
approach to co-op and their learning outcomes. For example,
three electromechanical students developed their own company
for their co-op called “Solar Energy Solutions.” The students
wrote a business plan, developed a logo, and marketed their
solar design and installation company to both residential and
commercial properties. Throughout the process they were
mentored and supervised by a contact at the Small Business
Association (SBA).
The Department of Career Services continues to host mock
interview day, a learning opportunity for Wentworth students
to practice and develop confidence in their interview skills.
In 2007, 340 interviews were conducted by 74 volunteer
interviewers and 160 students.
The annual career fair, held in March 2008, exceeded capacity
with 145 companies in attendance. Nearly 500 students and
graduates attended the career fair, which had the largest
participation from architecture and interior design firms, and an
increase in attendance from energy and power related industries.
Students are certainly not the only people who benefit from the
Department of Career Services. Alumni can make appointments
for career guidance and review potential positions on the online
job posting and recruiting portal, LeopardLaunch, which was
introduced in September 2007. Over one thousand companies
have registered to recruit Wentworth graduates and the portal
has managed 10,573 job applications for co-op positions, recent
graduates, and alumni.
Housing and Residential Life
Phil Bernard, director for housing and residential life, attended
a conference in October 2007, which specifically focused on
marketing on-campus housing to students. Armed with new
knowledge, Bernard developed a marketing plan, and, together
with his team, created podcasts and informational brochures for
parents. They covered topics such as benefits of living on
campus, housing deposit due dates, explanations of the process
for making a deposit, and research on the benefits of living on
04

campus. “All the studies conducted report that living on campus leads to higher success in
college. Also, students generally graduate sooner and with a higher GPA,” reported Bernard.
The efforts have paid off with a record number of more than 1,000 students planning to return
to the residence halls in the fall of 2008, which will represent a seven percent increase from the
previous year.
Office of Student Leadership Programs
The Office of Student Leadership Programs (SLP), under the direction of Peter Fowler, continues
to offer the successful and popular leadership program, Soar in Four. The Soar in Four
program is comprised of individual leadership seminars such as Emerging Leaders Program,
Leadership Exploration, and Leadership Watch. The SLP is a resource for student groups, and
now, through a successful capital fund request, also offers professional development grants
that students can apply for in the areas of career and leadership development, service to the
community, and social justice. Through these grants, students have attended conferences and
world conventions, and have presented papers at national chapter conferences.
An intercultural center for students, housed in the SLP area, has been created and serves
as a home base for cultural group offices as well as a student lounge and resource area.
It is the first time that Wentworth students have had a dedicated space that can be used
for prayer and religious gatherings.
The student affairs diversity committee spent time exploring men’s programs on campus.
Survey results stated that male students felt less supported and less valued than their
female counterparts. As a result, dinners were held with guest speakers on topics such as
health and wellness, career transition, men and money 101, men in the time of war, and
an alumni panel on balancing work and personal life.
Community Standards
Wentworth has high expectations for the behavior of our students on campus and as members
of the Mission Hill community. To encourage appropriate and respectful behavior patterns, a
First Year Seminar
In May 2008, staff, faculty,
and administrators applied
for and were selected as
instructors for the newly
created First Year Seminar.
The Seminar, commencing
in fall 2008, consists of a
weekly class that covers
transitional and academic
topics such as note taking
in lectures, time management,
and test taking. The
Seminar also discusses
general responsibilities of
being a Wentworth
student such as diversity
awareness, engaged
citizenship, and social
responsibility. Instructors
have undertaken logistical
training, will continue
ongoing weekly training
during the duration of the
program, and will serve
as a first year advisor
for members of his/her
class. Students are
also appointed an
academic advisor.
5

1 THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE
community police officer position was created to reach out to
students and Mission Hill residents with ongoing efforts to
educate and hold students accountable for their behaviors.
Students who are found responsible for inappropriate behavior
off campus are held to the same standard as if the incident took
place on campus. Sanctions, both punitive and educational, are
being imposed to assist students in learning to make better
decisions in the future.
Marlin Nabors, director of community standards, presented at
the Association for Student Judicial Affairs (ASJA) International
Conference in February 2008, on the topic of bringing learning
outcomes into the discipline process. It was the first time in the
history of the ASJA conference that a program was presented
as a partnership of student discipline and student counseling.
He was also invited to make the same presentation at the
National Association for Student Personal Administrators
(NASPA). As a direct result of Nabors’ research, a learning
guide is being used during all disciplinary hearings to ensure
that learning outcomes are being highlighted.
Counseling Center
Outreach to both students and faculty from the Counseling
Center is at an all-time high due to the hiring of a full-time
disability services coordinator, who is reaching out to faculty,
offering training, and acting as a resource for designing
curriculums that appeal to different learning styles. Group
training is available to all faculty and staff, with presentations
being made at academic and department meetings.
Communication to students who benefit from regular check-ins
and additional support is underway, and technologies are
being offered to students with disabilities to improve their
learning experience.
A new coordinator for wellness education, Beth Farrow, hired in
November 2007, is revamping the alcohol and drug educational
programs, to make them more learning based, intentional,
and reflective.
Office of Student Affairs
Annamaria Wenner is involved with the creation of the Wentworth
Risk and Assessment and Prevention Team (WRAP), organized in
response to the Virginia Tech tragedy. During the academic
year, weekly meetings bring together members of student
affairs, academic affairs, athletics, public safety, and enrollment
management. They work together to identify students at risk,
determine methods of outreach to those students, and assist in
any transitions that need to be introduced to assist the student,
be that in the classroom, the residence halls, or in the community.
In the fall of 2007, Wentworth partnered with Mass College of
Pharmacy & Health Sciences (MCPHS) and MassArt to offer an
alternative recreation/fitness facility to students. A new fitness
center, run by Mike Williams, from MCPHS, was opened in
Beatty Hall and has been a great success, with the highest
percentage of students using the facility being from Wentworth.
The Colleges of the Fenway (COF) are working to identify common
needs amongst several schools for collaboration, rather than
always including the six COF schools in new endeavors.
Student Life
Jim Levesque, director of student life, reported that approximately
100 students were selected to serve in leadership positions for
the 2007-2008 academic year. The positions include resident
assistants, orientation leaders, career peers, admissions representatives,
and community standard board members, among
others. These students returned to campus in the beginning of
August to participate in a two and a half week leadership training
program. Students were trained in areas such as team building,
conflict management, critical thinking, diversity, community
building, and problem-solving. Some students who hold more
than one position around campus use this inter-campus experience
to collaborate with each other and build new skill sets.
In September 2007, Levesque was part of a larger Institute effort
which successfully secured a contract with Harvard Vanguard to offer
more comprehensive medical care for Wentworth students. Health
care facilities on campus were updated to adhere to new standards,
provide better facilities for students, and offer a higher level of care.
6

2 ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS
The reach of the Wentworth faculty extends well beyond the classroom. Faculty members continue to educate
themselves and others through community involvement and projects, attendance and presentation of papers at
conferences, and the creation of learning programs; all experiences that benefit their teaching outcomes and the
learning opportunities for students. With almost 145 celebrated faculty members at Wentworth, it is not possible to
include all of their achievements in this report. The following is a sampling of highlights across academic departments:
Applied Mathematics and Sciences
In January 2008, Stephen Nodvin was appointed department
head, bringing a wealth of experience and expertise to the position.
He has been involved in environmental education for more than
35 years and has taught classes on global climate change for
nearly 20 years. Al Gore’s Climate Project, the Encyclopedia of
Earth, and the Union of Concerned Scientists, are a sampling
of organizations that enhance understanding of important
environmental issues with which Nodvin is involved.
In spring 2007, Assistant Professor Amanda Hattaway was
one of 12 national grant recipients to receive a Tensor-SUMMA
grant which funds the new program she founded “Students
Loving Adventures in Math” (SLAM). SLAM is a year-long math
enrichment program focused on strengthening math achievement,
especially among women and underrepresented minority youth.
In fall 2007, Hattaway received an Alpha Kappa Education
Foundation Grant for a graphing calculator proposal which
enabled her to purchase these calculators for the SLAM students.
Associate Professor Jack Duggan was named chapter director
of EnvironMentors for the Colleges of the Fenway. The first
and only university-based Boston chapter of this organization,
EnvironMentors is a national program that prepares high school
students from underrepresented minorities for college degree
programs in environmental and related science fields.
Architecture
Department Head Glenn Wiggins spearheaded Institute efforts
for drafting and submitting materials for a Master of Architecture
program, which may result in Wentworth’s first graduate program.
For the second time in his career, Professor Manuel Delgado
coordinated a course for 18 students and four faculty members
from the urban master design program at Universidad Central de
Venezuela (UCV). The UCV delegation visited Boston between
July and August 2007 initiating a site analysis and urban design
diagnostic of a case study that will be used as the subject in the
fall Housing and Community Design Studio class.
Assistant Professor Andrew Johnston, with assistance from a
colleague from Laval University, planned and managed a threeweek
summer field trip in 2007 to the Gaspe Peninsula Communities
in Quebec. Wentworth and Laval students undertook an intensive
cultural landscape study of the religious heritage of the local
aging and dwindling communities. Their work will have on-going
relevance for the communities and will serve as a tool of historical
memory and evidence for Canadian policy decision makers.
8

Johnston is hopeful that this will serve as a pilot for future
opportunities to engage in intensive summer teaching and
learning experiences.
Assistant Professors Lora Kim, Mark Pasnik, and Elizabeth Gibb,
along with the Center for Community & Learning Partnerships
(CLP) and other faculty members, visited New Orleans on two
occasions in 2007. Both trips included 20 Wentworth students
who were involved in designing and building components of the
People’s Environmental Center, a non-profit organization.
Over the last two years, 67 students have participated in the current
architecture study abroad program, which is based in Berlin and
led by a German architect and Wentworth faculty member Rolf
Backmann. During their residence in Berlin, students work closely
with German design and planning professionals, as well as with
German students through an institutional affiliation with the
Technische Fachhochschule Berlin.
Civil, Construction, and Environment
The Department of Civil, Construction, and Environment worked
with Shawmut Design and Construction on the planning,
development, and creation of a project room containing 91
workstations. Adjacent to this room is the “Shawmut Conference
Center” – a state-of-the-art multimedia conference room.
Assistant Professor James Lambrechts, together with Delgado,
obtained a grant from the Boston Mayor’s Office to coordinate the
efforts of three interdisciplinary Wentworth students. The students
developed field tests and refined and ran a pilot program to assess
and inventory the physical conditions of the street and sidewalk
environments throughout Boston. The eventual goal of this
program, should it continue, is to assess the conditions of each
block on every street throughout the entire City of Boston.
Associate Professor Larry Decker once again organized the state
meet of MATHCOUNTS – a national math enrichment, coaching,
and competition program for middle school students. Decker is
very involved with both the Metro west chapter and the regional
competition, which Wentworth has hosted for over ten years.
The program provided full four-year Wentworth tuition
scholarships for the top four winners.
For the third year running, Professor Mark Hasso spearheaded the
entrepreneurship lecture series, a weekly guest-lecture program
providing students the opportunity to listen to presentations by
industry experts. The five-speaker series was organized as part
of the Construction Business and Finance course and discussions
focused on experiences and perspective related to the start up,
development, and finance of a construction business.
Computer Science and Systems
Associate Professor Leonidas Deligiannidis and freshman student
John Larkin received the best paper award in the Human-Computer
Interaction track at the Human Systems Interaction Conference
that was held in Krakow, Poland in May 2007. They presented
their research results in new navigation techniques in gaming.
Deligiannidis has been instrumental in plans for a new state-ofthe-art
gaming lab which will provide students with an area to
write programs for computer games using the Microsoft XNA
framework. Students write their own games and play them
9

2 ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS
through an X-Box, a PC, or the Wii mode virtual reality device.
Deligiannidis is the mentor for the gaming club students and
he hopes to use their talent and that of his faculty to write and
produce virtual reality games for children whose movements are
limited due to disabilities.
Design & Facilities
Interim Department Head Suzanne Kennedy received the
International Facility Management Association (IFMA) “Educator
of the Year” award at World Workplace, the annual conference
and exposition of IFMA in New Orleans, LA, in October 2007.
Assistant Professor Mikael Powell presented research at
the Transitive Materials Workshop of the 9 th International
Conference on Ubiquitous Computing (UbiComp 2007) in
Innsbruck, Austria.
Professor Herb Fremin led a faculty evaluation team for the
selection of students to represent Wentworth in national and
regional scholarship competitions. The program’s success
was noteworthy; Kaitlyn Putaski received second place in the
national Brinkman Gensler Scholarship, earning a $1,500
scholarship and an internship at Gensler.
Electronics and Mechanical
Department Head Sandeep Dilwali launched the first Science,
Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Discovery Program
in summer 2007. The successful three-week program was
developed to inspire students’ interest in math and science
subjects and their applications in the engineering professions;
to introduce students to some of the tools they will need to
excel academically in science and math; and to expose students
to the professional opportunities that can be pursued by
studying STEM subjects. After a successful first year, the
program was offered again in summer 2008.
Professor Masoud Olia participated as a science consultant on
the WGBH children's show called “FETCH” in summer 2007. In
the episode “Monster Mash,” Olia appeared in all segments
and helped the children with the engineering design process
for a cake protector. Olia also published a text, “Review for
the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam.”
Professor Mansour Zenouzi was elected as a chair of the System
Analysis and Fuel Cell Committee of the American Society of
3 CENTER FOR TEACHING & LEARNING
AND CONTINUING EDUCATION
Center for Teaching & Learning
Since its opening in October 2006, the Center for Teaching &
Learning (CTL) has made significant progress with both students
and faculty, mainly due to successful efforts to increase the
Center’s offerings and visibility across campus. This growth
was accomplished by collaborating with academic departments;
implementing an integrated communications plan that involved
internal and external website upgrades; using LConnect and
email communications; printing advertisements in the student
newspaper - The Leopard Print; showing ads on the television
in the Beatty Hall lobby; displaying posters around campus; and
distributing flyers and brochures to students.
Karen Britton, director of the CTL, is exploring ways to make the
Center more accessible and inviting to all students. Student
assistance is provided through personal tutoring and study
sessions, faculty and professional tutorials, and computer-based
tutorials. Since fall 2006, subjects in which tutoring is offered
have increased from 15 to over 80, with an increase in the total
number of tutoring hours jumping from 450 to over 900. In
order to keep up with the increased demand for its services,
the CTL has increased the number of tutors, and in June 2008,
Devon Sprague was hired as the full-time assistant director
and writing tutor.
Britton is in constant communication with students on academic
probation, offering a Probation Workshop and information on
satisfactory academic progress. Workshops on graduate school
and reading improvement are also offered each semester. In
addition, the Center hosts an Open House for new international
students every fall.
Over time, the Center has also become a greater resource for
faculty, offering support through organized lectures, roundtable
discussions, workshops, and conferences on enhancing teaching
and learning. During the CTL’s first year, several roundtable
discussions were held on topics including Plagiarism, Laptops
and Technology in the Classroom, WebCT, and Advising.
Continuing Education at Wentworth
Dr. Joan Dolamore, dean of lifelong learning, joined Wentworth in
2007 and has already begun to revitalize the Division of Professional
and Continuing Studies (DPCS) by enhancing existing course
offerings and introducing new programs that serve the varied
needs of individual students and corporate partners. “The
importance of continuous learning cannot be underestimated,”
said Dolamore. “It is often the critical component in a life full
of personal and professional satisfaction and achievement.”
Dolamore’s broad strategy for growing and strengthening the DPCS
ranges from a rebranding effort including the design and
development of new course materials and a website redesign, to
ambitious efforts to increase alumni outreach and develop new ways
to meet diverse workforce training needs. “Our alumni need to know
that the best place to update their skills, education, and training is
right here at Wentworth; our programs are designed to complement
their undergraduate degree education,” said Dolamore.
“We are implementing these changes with the goal of becoming
increasingly nimble and flexible in delivering our offerings to
both geographically distant learners and local and national
corporations,” explained Dolamore.
Workforce training programs are delivered on campus or on-site
and are customized to meet the specific needs of the organization.
Recently, the DPCS has conducted an Introduction to Construction
Management certificate program at the Gould Education Institute in
Burlington, MA, and is in the process of delivering a Certificate in
Managing Construction Projects to the Joint Apprenticeship &
Training Committee of the IBEW Local 103. In addition, the
DPCS contracted with the local Carpenter’s Union to deliver an
on-site Associate Degree in Building and Construction Management
to their apprentice members; and executed an agreement with
the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees
to provide their members a reduced rate on course fees. Initiatives
such as these will increase both the number and type of students
served by the DPCS and revenue generated by the division.
4 COMMUNITY & LEARNING PARTNERSHIPS
The Center for Community & Learning Partnerships (CLP) celebrated its third anniversary in August this year. The Center is the
result of years of faculty, staff, student, and community efforts to create partnerships that address neighborhood concerns, while
enhancing the educational and professional environment at the Institute. The CLP focuses on formalizing these grassroots initiatives
and enhancing their impact on students and the community.
The CLP philosophy is focused on producing reciprocal and
transformative partnerships through available assets and existing
relationships. “While the Center exists to promote volunteerism
and civic engagement,” explains Sean Bender, director of the
CLP, “our philosophy is not focused on simply ‘doing good.’
Rather, the focus of our activities and programs is to create
rewarding academic and professional experiences that matter in
the real world—our community.”
Students, faculty, staff, and the community are brought together
to act as think tanks where energetic ideas meet established
principles and practice. The result is transformative student
experiences, alongside extraordinary community outcomes.
Five focus areas make up the bulk of Wentworth’s community
learning priorities, and represent both community issues and
Wentworth’s strengths as an institute of technology.
• Digital Divide: Computer & Information Technology
• Sustainable Development: Design/Build
• Social Enterprise: Management
• Adaptive & Green Technology: Engineering & Design
• College Access & Success
In 2007-2008, 1,800 students contributed 116,000 hours to
community-based work, co-curricular service, and service learning.
Forty-one faculty members supported community service, service
learning, or direct professional service, contributing to an estimated
3,000 hours of service. The combined faculty and student contributions
in service had an estimated economic impact of $3 million.
The Faculty Service Learning Committee (SLC), which has
representation from each academic department, has worked
together with the CLP to advocate for, and support the use of,
service learning by faculty and students. The CLP, in collaboration
with the SLC, established a comprehensive planning and review
process for community-based projects which enables constant
improvement and process development for service learning
projects. The realization that students who engaged in ongoing
volunteer opportunities experience more rewarding educational
outcomes prompted the development of a Certificate in
Community Learning. Students who enroll in the certificate
program map out their four years at Wentworth toward a career
focused on civic engagement.
Upon graduation, the students who successfully meet the
guidelines set forth receive a certification recognizing their
academic accomplishment and contribution to the community.
The “pioneer” class of four students (two from interior design,
one from computer networking, and one from management)
were granted the Certificate in Community Learning at the
August 2008 Commencement.
College Access
Many young people growing up in neighborhoods near
Wentworth feel that the opportunity to go to college or pursue a
career in science or technology seems unrealistic or simply out
of reach. The Institute is working to radically change that perception
with a host of programs that join Wentworth students and
faculty with local youth. These programs give young students the
knowledge and tools to excel academically and aspire to education
and careers in science and technology.
O’Bryant High School
The Institute is expanding an established mentoring relationship
with the O’Bryant High School as part of a more effective and
integrated service learning initiative to include tutoring, student
orientation, and course development. The following two
programs are highlights of this partnership:
Dual Enrollment: O’Bryant High School students are provided
the opportunity to begin college academics at Wentworth while
completing their high school education in a collaborative dual
enrollment, tuition-free program.
The Networking Excellence Experiencing Teaching (NEXT):
This program provides Wentworth student mentors to O’Bryant
14

students. Through a series of
workshops, Wentworth students
offer advice on a range of
post-secondary topics including
the college admissions process,
writing essays, and what to
expect in college.
Urban Massachusetts
Louis Stokes Alliance
for Minority Participation
(UMLSAMP)
Wentworth is part of an alliance
with eight member institutions
to increase the quality and
quantity of underrepresented
minority students completing
baccalaureate degrees in science,
technology, engineering, and
mathematics (STEM) fields.
This program is funded by
the National Science Foundation
with support from its institutional
members, state agencies, and
corporate enterprises.
Summer Math Bridge Program
In summer 2007, Wentworth
hosted this program to prepare
incoming freshmen in mathematics.
Wentworth offers $800
stipends to a select population
of underrepresented minority
students and other Wentworth
students for their active participation
in the program and for
being program ambassadors.
5 HUMAN RESOURCES AND FACILITIES
Human Resources
The Department of Human Resources (HR) is contributing
to a safer and more efficient working environment at
Wentworth through the implementation of an updated
applicant tracking and performance management system,
as well as the use of online training programs.
A web-based software system, PeopleAdmin – which has
been in use at the Institute since 2006 – has expedited
the job posting and hiring process. Managers are now
able to create job postings online, and appropriate application
questions are available for selection. Applicants can search for
open postings and upload their application in a few simple
steps. This streamlined process eliminates individuals who do
not meet the position criteria, ensuring that supervisors are
interviewing from a select pool of more qualified candidates.
Due to the success of PeopleAdmin, the software will be
utilized for job descriptions and performance evaluations
beginning in October 2008. The system will enable the
supervisors to create and update accurate job descriptions
as well as help facilitate the performance evaluation process.
All applications, resumes, position descriptions, and
performance evaluations are now being housed in a central
electronic archive as the HR office moves towards being
paperless. Online training programs for the prevention of
sexual harassment and employment discrimination were
introduced in 2007 for all staff and faculty. During the same
year, HR commenced conducting criminal background checks
on all new employees through the company HireRight, who
also, depending on the candidate’s position, carry out DMV
and credit checks.
Susan Morin, HR manager, is chair of the Colleges of the
Fenway diversity recruitment sub-committee. The committee
has just completed a three-year strategy to increase employee
diversity through creating an advertising strategy aimed at
select publications and websites, hosting employment fairs
and networking events, and establishing relationships with
minority professional organizations.
Facilities
Wentworth has been proactive in implementing facility
upgrades that enhance the student learning experience,
improve campus safety, and assist with navigating the campus.
Campus Master Plan
The Institute has embarked on a comprehensive master
planning project to evaluate campus needs and set priorities
for the future direction of the Institute. A kick-off meeting on
March 3, 2008, introduced faculty, staff, and students to the
two design firms that have been helping to conduct the
master planning process: Goody Clancy and Perkins+Will.
With their guidance, Wentworth has been working with
the community to maximize existing capabilities and plan
strategically for future campus development.
Classroom Conversions
The Architecture Studio in Annex North underwent renovations
in 2007 with the rebuilding of junior and senior labs to increase
the number of work stations and make way for master’s degree
studios. The Architecture studio expansion created an increase
in student capacity from 150 to 238 stations. Two rooms,
previously Mac Labs, in Annex Central, were converted to
classrooms, and classroom conversions also occurred in Beatty
Hall and Wentworth Hall.
The Annex wing was reconstructed to provide space for a
conference room and project room for the Department of
Civil, Construction, and Environment (CCEV). The Shawmut
Conference Center was built by Shawmut Design and
Construction, a leading national construction management firm.
Shawmut donated its services to build a multimedia conference
room and reception area as a gesture of reciprocity and partnership
with Wentworth, whose graduates heavily populate the
Shawmut ranks. The new project room was constructed to
increase work stations from 20 to 91 and enable students to
work in teams. Five new offices were also built for CCEV faculty.
The Industrial Design carpenter and sheet metal labs used
for model building were upgraded and a Z-printer 510
was purchased. This particular printer is able to produce
high-definition, full color 3D parts for students’ 3D models.
16

Banner
Wentworth transitioned to Banner, a
new database system, to modernize
and synchronize the Institute’s departments.
Banner’s implementation was
extremely successful and has benefitted
Wentworth by allowing real-time data
entry and creating seamless interaction
between departments. The Department
of Finance successfully launched the
program on July 1, 2006, and a year
later financial services, financial aid,
and the registrar’s office implemented
Banner.
Signage
On August 26, 2007, Wentworth
joined the American College Health
Association (ACHA) and became
tobacco-free. Signage was designed
and placed at every entry point to
campus to notify people of the
regulation. New informational,
directional, and venue-specific signs
are also on display around campus,
making navigating campus easier
than ever.
Fitness and Study
Renovations to the Tansey Gym floor
were completed in January 2007,
enabling the men’s and women’s
volleyball and basketball teams to
have the home court advantage once
again. After students work out in the
new Colleges of the Fenway fitness
center - shared between Mass College
of Pharmacy and Health Sciences,
MassArt, and Wentworth - they can
enjoy new seating and study booths
added to the lower floor of Beatty Hall.
17

6 ATHLETICS
In July 2006, the Tansey Gymnasium was closed due to a flooring issue which affected
the men’s and women’s volleyball and basketball teams. As a result, teams were
forced to practice and compete at numerous off-campus facilities; however, team
spirits were not dampened. “Wentworth students always demonstrate perseverance
and dedication to their sport,” commented Lee Conrad, director of athletics. “The
teams were displaced for much of their seasons, but that did not stop the men’s
basketball team from winning the conference championship and a trip to the NCAA’s.”
The gym, complete with its brand new floor, opened in late January 2007, just in time
for the home stretch for both basketball teams, the early part of the men’s volleyball
season, and the start of practice for the Leopard spring sport teams.
Individual Accomplishments
Twenty-two of Wentworth’s student-athletes were honored as all-conference performers.
Included in the list were a pair of conference rookies of the year and a conference
player of the year. Additionally, men’s basketball coach Tom Devitt and ice hockey
coach R.J. Tolan were honored as coaches of the year in their respective conferences.
Caitlin Wall, BAET ’07, became the first Wentworth women’s soccer player to score
100 or more points in her career.
Cheyenne Noble, BMET ’08, became the third Wentworth women’s basketball player
to grab 1,000 or more rebounds in her career.
Seven individuals—Warren Cochrane, AET ’81 (rifle), Ivan Filippov, BMT ’01 (ice hockey),
Kevin Hanlon, BCT ’00 (men’s basketball), and D.J. McBain, BCMT ’01 (lacrosse), as
well as contributors Myles, AC ’28, and Eugenia Sweeney, and former president
Dr. John Van Domelen—were inducted into the Wentworth Athletics Hall of Fame.
Staff Changes
Carrie Crawford, the women’s basketball coach who achieved the most wins in the
program’s history, stepped down after four years, and was replaced by Amanda
Rodgerson, a former standout at the University of New England.
Jason Jeffers, CHC ’97, the men’s and women’s volleyball coach, stepped down from his
men’s coaching duties and was replaced by Nam Phan, who played his freshman season
at Wentworth before transferring to Brandeis and competing on its club volleyball team.
In the training room, Dawn Garbino, assistant athletic trainer for nine years, stepped
down and was replaced by Lauren Eck, an assistant athletic trainer at Bridgewater State.
7 INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEMENT
The Office of Institutional Advancement is the driving force behind initiatives related to fundraising, alumni
relations, and strategic communications to internal and external audiences.
FY08 was a record breaking year for Wentworth, with alumni,
students, friends, faculty, and parents contributing a total of
$12,280,000 to the Institute. Vice President for Institutional
Advancement, Brenda Sanchez, reports, “Over the past year,
our team of professionals in Institutional Advancement has
effectively strengthened the core functions of the department
and we are thrilled that our many outreach efforts are working.
It is rewarding to see an increased number of alumni attending
events, and we are excited that our fundraising pieces have
been successful.” In addition, Sanchez notes that “we are
progressing steadily towards refining our brand and building
increased awareness of the many successes and milestones of
the Institute. In order to ensure that Wentworth continues to
provide the quality education it is known for, it is essential that
we continue to move in this positive direction.”
Office of Alumni Relations
Wentworth alumni and friends had thirty-five reasons to attend
a Wentworth event during 2007/2008: that being the number
of functions organized by the office of alumni relations. To
better connect alumni to their alma mater, the alumni relations
team has created innovative programs, increased communications,
and hosted new and improved events that provide
opportunities to network, socialize, and stay informed on
the exciting happenings and milestones at Wentworth.
The Wentworth experience was transported around the nation
through 14 regional alumni events, and through the increasing
popularity of alumni regional chapter meetings, such as the San
Francisco Bay Area Chapter. Plans are underway for alumni chapters
in New York City, Florida, Arizona, and Western Massachusetts.
Attendance at golf tournaments, the Black and Gold 50 th
reunion event, and receptions such as the annual Women at
Wentworth dinner, have more than doubled over the past two
years, reports Erica (Rapp) Wilcoxson, director of alumni relations.
Communication with alumni and friends has become more
consistent through The Wentworth Connection, a monthly
e-newsletter, designed and created with the support and
expertise of the advancement operations team. This communication
tool has sparked interest in several events, particularly
the Wentworth Alumni Association’s (WAA) inaugural leadership
networking event in June. The alumni office has also
established a Facebook page and successfully uses this social
networking tool to communicate with alumni. Due to the
popularity of the primary account, a “Women at Wentworth”
group was also created. Plans are underway to launch an
online community to further facilitate networking, provide
alumni with a permanent Wentworth e-mail account, and
enable them to register online for events.
The inaugural Reunion Weekend Program was held in June
2008 and welcomed guests from many states including
Alabama, South Dakota, Florida, and Maine. Reunion Weekend
is a new initiative that invites alumni back to campus, facilitates
networking among classmates, and provides an opportunity
to interact with Wentworth faculty and view the latest
improvements to the facilities at Wentworth.
Matthew Kane, FMC ’96, who took over as President of WAA in
spring 2007, has overseen the development of committees that
focus on specific areas such as programming, communications,
and regional chapters. Kane plans to increase the number of
regional chapters and continue to sponsor networking events
through FY09, his final year as President.
The alumni office has been strengthening industry relations and
has successfully obtained sponsorship for both the alumni golf
tournament and the President’s Cup, enabling funds raised to
be donated towards the Annual Fund in areas such as athletics
and scholarship/financial aid.
Annual Fund
During the past two years, Wentworth alumni and friends have
exhibited an extraordinary level of generosity that has achieved new
milestones in giving to the Institute. Participation in the Wentworth
Annual Fund increased by more than 30 percent in FY08, with
contributions totaling a record $720,500. Melanie Sheffield, associate
director for institutional advancement, credits this increased participation
to successful appeals, a reinvigorated phone-a-thon, increased
outreach to parents, and the launch of online giving in May 2007.
20

7 INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEMENT
“We have become more visible in the lives of our alumni and
friends – through e-mails, letters, phone calls, and appreciation
events such as our annual scholarship luncheon,” explained
Sheffield. “In October 2007, we hosted our first ever Donor
Appreciation Dinner – it was a wonderful opportunity to really
acknowledge our donors for their incredible generosity.”
Outreach to young alumni has grown substantially, with
three annual events in January, May, and October enabling
Wentworth graduates from 1997-2007 to re-connect with former
classmates and the Institute. Meagan McMullen, assistant
director of the annual fund, created “the Battle of the WITS,” a
friendly competition between academic programs to encourage
seniors to support the senior gift program. Through displaying
posters around campus, sending postcards and e-mail blasts,
and developing a class of 2008 profile on Facebook, a buzz was
created as the senior class attempted to win the ‘battle’ by
increasing their respective program’s participation. Overall, the
class of ’08 raised a grand total of $7,000, and the winners—
the graduating seniors from the Department of Architecture—
were honored at an event at Boston Billiards in May.
Major Gifts & Scholarships
Wentworth received a generous gift from wonderful friends of
the Institute in summer 2007, when Maria and Kosta Papoulidis
gifted a portion of their property on the corner of Ward Street
and Huntington Avenue to the Institute. Their generosity was
honored on June 25, 2008, with the naming of the “Kosta and
Maria Papoulidis Quadrangle.”
Generous philanthropist and Wentworth corporator, William
“Bill” Flanagan, Machine Construction & Tool Design ’51, made
the largest gift in the Institute’s history, a $10 million dollar
charitable gift annuity. This gift will be used for the construction
of a new campus center to be named in Mr. Flanagan’s honor.
Since over 75 percent of Wentworth students receive scholarships
or financial aid, donations are more important than ever.
Relationships between the Institute and industry were greatly
strengthened through scholarships from several companies
including Suffolk Construction Company, Gilbane Inc., and William
A. Berry & Son. In addition, Wentworth is fostering relationships
with industry leaders across industries which align to
Wentworth’s academic programs.
Public Affairs (marketing and communications;
public relations and media relations)
The marketing and communications department works closely with
the admissions office and the Division of Professional and
Continuing Studies (DPCS) on the coordination of their printed
materials and advertising initiatives. Efforts to increase Wentworth’s
visibility are being implemented through a strategic advertising
plan to ensure the most effective exposure among target audiences.
The Wentworth community is informed of the accomplishments
of alumni, faculty, students, and staff through the Wentworth
Magazine, the President’s Report, and the Institute’s homepage,
which was re-designed by the advancement operations team.
The marketing and communications department strives to
ensure a consistent brand for Wentworth across printed
and online materials and are the go-to contacts for strategic
counsel related to marketing and/or the review of written
materials.
The public relations department has been generating increased
exposure and awareness of the Institute to a broad range of
internal and external audiences and key stakeholders, promoting
the achievements of students, faculty, and staff, and advancing
the leadership position of Wentworth. A strategic public relations
plan has been implemented to effectively communicate across
multiple audiences, as well as nurture relationships with key
government officials.
Proactive media relations efforts have focused on building key
relationships with local and national media contacts across print,
online, and broadcast outlets. These efforts have resulted in
securing positive media coverage for Wentworth, and positioning
faculty, staff, and departments as expert resources for reporters.
Wentworth has been included in a variety of news mediums
including local Boston daily newspapers, television and radio
broadcasts, hometown newspapers, and industry publications.
