4 COMMUNITY & LEARNING PARTNERSHIPS The Center for Community & Learning Partnerships (CLP) celebrated its third anniversary in August this year. The Center is the result of years of faculty, staff, student, and community efforts to create partnerships that address neighborhood concerns, while enhancing the educational and professional environment at the Institute. The CLP focuses on formalizing these grassroots initiatives and enhancing their impact on students and the community. The CLP philosophy is focused on producing reciprocal and transformative partnerships through available assets and existing relationships. “While the Center exists to promote volunteerism and civic engagement,” explains Sean Bender, director of the CLP, “our philosophy is not focused on simply ‘doing good.’ Rather, the focus of our activities and programs is to create rewarding academic and professional experiences that matter in the real world—our community.” Students, faculty, staff, and the community are brought together to act as think tanks where energetic ideas meet established principles and practice. The result is transformative student experiences, alongside extraordinary community outcomes. Five focus areas make up the bulk of Wentworth’s community learning priorities, and represent both community issues and Wentworth’s strengths as an institute of technology. • Digital Divide: Computer & Information Technology • Sustainable Development: Design/Build • Social Enterprise: Management • Adaptive & Green Technology: Engineering & Design • College Access & Success In 2007-2008, 1,800 students contributed 116,000 hours to community-based work, co-curricular service, and service learning. Forty-one faculty members supported community service, service learning, or direct professional service, contributing to an estimated 3,000 hours of service. The combined faculty and student contributions in service had an estimated economic impact of $3 million. The Faculty Service Learning Committee (SLC), which has representation from each academic department, has worked together with the CLP to advocate for, and support the use of, service learning by faculty and students. The CLP, in collaboration with the SLC, established a comprehensive planning and review process for community-based projects which enables constant improvement and process development for service learning projects. The realization that students who engaged in ongoing volunteer opportunities experience more rewarding educational outcomes prompted the development of a Certificate in Community Learning. Students who enroll in the certificate program map out their four years at Wentworth toward a career focused on civic engagement. Upon graduation, the students who successfully meet the guidelines set forth receive a certification recognizing their academic accomplishment and contribution to the community. The “pioneer” class of four students (two from interior design, one from computer networking, and one from management) were granted the Certificate in Community Learning at the August 2008 Commencement. College Access Many young people growing up in neighborhoods near Wentworth feel that the opportunity to go to college or pursue a career in science or technology seems unrealistic or simply out of reach. The Institute is working to radically change that perception with a host of programs that join Wentworth students and faculty with local youth. These programs give young students the knowledge and tools to excel academically and aspire to education and careers in science and technology. O’Bryant High School The Institute is expanding an established mentoring relationship with the O’Bryant High School as part of a more effective and integrated service learning initiative to include tutoring, student orientation, and course development. The following two programs are highlights of this partnership: Dual Enrollment: O’Bryant High School students are provided the opportunity to begin college academics at Wentworth while completing their high school education in a collaborative dual enrollment, tuition-free program. The Networking Excellence Experiencing Teaching (NEXT): This program provides Wentworth student mentors to O’Bryant 14
students. Through a series of workshops, Wentworth students offer advice on a range of post-secondary topics including the college admissions process, writing essays, and what to expect in college. Urban Massachusetts Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (UMLSAMP) Wentworth is part of an alliance with eight member institutions to increase the quality and quantity of underrepresented minority students completing baccalaureate degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. This program is funded by the National Science Foundation with support from its institutional members, state agencies, and corporate enterprises. Summer Math Bridge Program In summer 2007, Wentworth hosted this program to prepare incoming freshmen in mathematics. Wentworth offers $800 stipends to a select population of underrepresented minority students and other Wentworth students for their active participation in the program and for being program ambassadors. 15
